The debut single for this acclaimed band was a milestone in Canadian music history. An unmistakable anthem for equality (“we want freedom to love who we please” and "woman's time has come"), it has been adopted by activists as a theme for anti-racism, gay rights, feminism and indeed, universal freedom. It won the coveted Juno (Canadian music industry) Single of the Year over artists that had enjoyed more global success at the time (Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, Men Without Hats).


This Vancouver band had developed an underground following through the years by performing in nightclubs and community halls across the country. Tonight I dug up L.A's Top 100 of 1983 from Southern California's KIQQ. This was a top Pop station in Los Angeles that played a ix of the popular Pop hits and New Wave songs of the time. Tonight I dug up the KLOS playback of the top 95 songs of 1983. KLOS was a top Rock format radio station in Southern California. Rivaled only by KMET. This was yet another radio station I got my favorite songs from....and yes Michael Bolton was a rocker before he drifter over to Adult Contemporary. If I knew how to do those Music Video compilations, I would do one so everyone could listen a snippet of each song. Those vid Compilations are so cool.

It seems BB ranked songs according to points accumulated during one calendar year (Dec 1-Nov 30). Unfortunately, the points accumulated by those tracks you cited were split between '83 and '84. 

Similarly, some songs that charted well in the second half of the 1983 BB year appeared only in the 1984 tally. 'Islands In The Stream' made #1 on Oct 29, 1983 (and was said to the best-selling single of 1983), but finished at only #56 in the 1984 YE chart. 'All Night Long' reached the top during the week of Nov 12, 1983 but finished at #12 in the 1984 YE list.

Genre Format charts like Alt and Rock charts are prone to charting songs a lot sooner than Pop charts. In this case Billboard, which has many actual Pop songs that rock songs have to compete with. Other examples are local charts v.s. regional chart. The last chart I'm posting is the first year end chart for 91x. This one will also look quite different from KROQ's chart. The main reason is because 91x playlist used to be influenced by the fact that it extended into the Mexican border. Bands like English Beat, Cure and Adam and The Ants were huge over here. This is my favorite of the 1983 year end charts.
