Pass The Dutchie Musical Youth
Total Points: 846
Billboard Hot 100: 10
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 91
From: The Youth of Today
Huge international hit released in mid-September of 1982. It peaked at No. 1 in 8 European countries and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February of 1983.
House Lannister - 31
No regrets about being third highest ranker for this fun song. Not sure how this deserved bottom 5s though?

Damn at LRB going out this soon. It's probably the only chance I'll have to rank John Farnham 'cause I don't think any of his solo material made any US year-end lists. :'(

Stray Cats weren't even that good. I'm just a sucker for provincial New York boys doing their best rockabilly.
Pass the Dutchie getting tanked like this though? Wrong!

I'd love to know how "Breaking Us in Two" is worthy of three #100 rankings.
Well, I guess I can lessen my expectations for Joe's other song.

& SHAME on all of the Joe Jackson hate...did you assume it was Michael's dad singing or something & not listen to it? that's the only explanation for a #100 ranking for Breaking Us In Two

^For me, while I didn't rank it as low as some, I find the song great, but his vocal is trash. It virtually ruins the song for me.

Does the Mandy Moore cover version make it any better? That's how I was introduced to the song, through her covers album 'Coverage'.

#83 I've Got A Rock 'N' Roll Heart Eric Clapton
This Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 hit was released in January of 1983 as the first single from the album Money and Cigarettes. It would remain his highest charting solo single in the US until 1992's "Tears In Heaven."
Maybe you meant to say "his last Top 20 until TIH?" I think he charted solo in the US Top 10 in the 70s and 80s - including a #1. Love it! Attachment Deleted

#90
The Girl Is Mine Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney
Total Points: 743
Billboard Hot 100: 2(3)
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 49
From: Thriller
First single from the biggest selling album of all time, this was released October 18, 1982 and reached its peak of No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 the week ending January 8, 1983 where it remained for 3 weeks. It would be the first of 7 singles Jackson would take into the Top 10 in 1983.
Michael often said that recording this song was one of his most enjoyable experiences in the studio. The song features members of the band Toto on piano, drums, guitars and synths.
Perfect ranking! I was just waiting for it to be kicked out!

Breaking Us In Two Joe Jackson
Total Points: 919
Billboard Hot 100: 18
Billboard Top 100 of 1983: 99
From: Night and Day
Second single from Night and Day, this peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 8 on the Adult Contemporary chart.
Clearing out a few more No. 100 placements with this leaving the rankdown...
That's it for today, counting down 80-71 tomorrow!
[Â Meh...I don't really like it as much as "Steppin Out". I love Steppin Out. Such a fun song!

To be fair, Breaking Us in Two is no Steppin' Out. That did way better in my ratings at least.
At the same time, Lawyers in Love? Puttin' On the Ritz? Mr. Roboto? Safety Dance? They're still here?

Again, Lawyers in Love is still here? SMH Edition:
90. The Girl is Mine---This feels more like a doggone missed opportunity than anything. MJ at the prime of his career, Paul can still go. Say Say Say is better, but I don't think they did anything GREAT like they could have.
89. We've Got Tonight---Remember the lack of chemistry between Bing and David Bowie in their rendition of The Little Drummer Boy? I felt the same thing here.
88. Never Gonna Let You Go---Kinda felt a bit generous letting him out of my bottom 10 for this song. I guess I'm not a fan of easy listening AC?
87. Heart to Heart---Much like the theme for Over the Top, I find uptempo Loggins to be the best Loggins. Sorry.
86. Pass the Dutchie---Dutchie is Jamaican for a cooking pot or stew pot. I really found this song fun, an upbeat reggae number. *Shrugs*
85. All Right---And there goes my third bottom 10. Clearly, I'm not buying what this guy is selling (not even a fan of his big song which was the theme to Arthur).
84. The Other Guy---Aww. I kinda liked this one. It had an appealing sound. I guess if you didn't care for it though...
83. I've Got a Rock n' Roll Heart---Ironically, I think this Eric Clapton number needed more rock 'n roll. It kinda dragged.
82. Sexy and 17---I wasn't sure what the title meant so I took a close look at those lyrics and they're basically high school hijinks. Nothing really objectionable. Kinda wonder if his other song will do much better?
81. Breaking Us in Two---Slow, basically dragging the entire way. I think it overstayed to be honest. But I can also think of 5-6 other songs that need to go away like now.
I'm fine with my top 10 staying intact so far. Less fine with 7 of my bottom 10 hanging around as well.

If we could start two sets in a row by eliminating a duet (specifically the one in my bottom 5) that would be cool

#90. The Girl Is Mine - Michael Jackson & Paul McCartneyTeaming up two superstars doesn't always men a certified hit. Paul and Stevie was much better than Paul and Michael. That spoken part by Michael and Paul really tuned me out. #89. We've Got Tonight - Kenny Rogers & Sheena EastonThis was an odd team up, but I always loved Sheena Easton's vocals. #88. Never Gonna Let You Go - Sérgio MendesThe only thing I remember about this song is changing the station whenever it came on. #87. Heart To Heart - Kenny Loggins I have a soft spot for Kenny. He had many melodic ballads and The Caddyshack smash "I'm Alright". My favorite is the Steve Perry duet "Don't Fight It", but that one is for 1982. #86. Pass The Dutchie - Musical YouthThank goodness this is out. I don't even know how this song made the cut while "Candy Girl" misses out. I thought this song was about passing the bread around the table. SCrew thier vocals too. . I'll take Haysi Fantayzee's "Shiny Shiny" any day over this crap song. #85. All Right - Christopher CrossThere is no way I was gonna tank this one. Great song and it flows wonderfully as a lite poprock song. I guess you'll find out how high I ranked this in my own personal top 100 of 1983 earlier than I thought you would? #84. The Other Guy - Little River BandI can't think of one song I like form this band. #83. I've Got A Rock 'N' Roll Heart - Eric ClaptonWell its higher than it appears on my personal rankdown, but I still enjoyed this one quite a bit. #82. (She's) Sexy + 17 - Stray CatsI wonder how many tanked this one because of the title? LOL. I love Stray Cats. I just didn't think this particular melody hit the spot. I still charted it tho. #81. Breaking Us In Two - Joe Jackson My musical styles haven't changed one bit since I was six. Even today I would tank this borefest. "Stepping Out" was great tho. Let's start out with a couple of reveals from my list.
213. Moving Pictures - What About Me 194. Stray Cats - (She's) Sexy + 17 178. Kenny Loggins - Heart To Heart 175. Eric Clapton - I've Got A Rock 'N' Roll Heart My first Top 100 casualty from this list. and my biggest loss so far. 60. Christopher Cross - All Right90. Devo - Peak -A BooThis was such a big hit on my top 40 that it cruised in from 1982 to 1983. I love these synth monsters. 89. Q- Feel - Dancing in Heaven (Orbital Be-Bop)
My #1 song from 1982 was still in my top 10 at the start of 1983, so here it is. I played this '45 so much I have bought about 5 in this lifetime. and yes. . This beat out "Shake It Up", "I Love Rock n' Roll" "Centerfold and "Don't talk To Strangers" in my top 100 of 1982 88. ? 87. ? 86. ? 85. Police - King Of PainHere's one I couldn't believe didn't make the top 100 of 1983, but it's because It got an early kick on Southern California rock radio stations were it made all the 1983 lists. Including mine. 84. Cure - The Love CatsCan you believe this song did absolutely nothing in the Hot 100? Such a classic. 83. Kajagoogoo - Hang On Now Yup I charted three Kajagoogoo songs and Limahl's solo hit in 1983. here is the original rare MV for you to enjoy. 82. U2 - New Year's DayAre you ready for my atrocities committed by the Hot 100? This classic only peaked at #53. Let's all say it together....WTF 81. ?
