"Singing In My Sleep" is the only song here that isn't at least a 3.5/5 for me, and after "Secret Smile" was only top 20 I didn't think any non-"Closing Time" Semisonic single would have the juice for top 10. That and "Perfect" are the only real surprises if we're talking about any ordinary Alt rankdown. But, considering the popster invasion, I'm also happy "Brick" and "Karma Police" survived their buffoonery.
"Closing Time" is probably winning, and I'm fine with that.

1 Semisonic - Closing Time 2 The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony 3 Third Eye Blind - Jumper 4 Radiohead - Karma Police 5 Natalie Imbruglia - Torn 6 Foo Fighters - My Hero 7 The Smashing Pumpkins - Perfect 8 Ben Folds Five - Brick 9 Third Eye Blind - Losing a Whole Year 10 Semisonic - Singing in My Sleep - Any surprises in this top ten? The forgotten Semisonic and 3EB songs that don’t get gold airplay anymore. Brick also surprising but I do recall it being a regular or TRL (though that didn’t help Father of Mine) - What songs that missed out disappoint you? Iris, of course TRL debuted in September though and Brick had already fallen off the charts I must’ve been thinking of this show instead from 1997-1998, also Carson Daly: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_RequestBrick was definitely something I associated more as a video with Carson Daly/MTV and not really as a song on alt radio.

But, considering the popster invasion, I'm also happy "Brick" and "Karma Police" survived their buffoonery. What are you talking about? Those aren't even "loud" or "aggressive". And I'm pretty sure Doc isn't a "popster", either. And I do like both songs.

The top 3 contenders seem pretty cemented in a hotly contest battle, with Karma Police a dark horse to sneak in. The only song I mind winning is if a certain band get their 4th alt #1 (6th if they didn’t block themselves)

And I'm pretty sure Doc isn't a "popster", either. And I do like both songs. The pop presence in rock rankdowns often works both ways. On one hand, it'll tank the less accessible, harder-edged songs, but on the other hand, it can tank the less upbeat, more subtle indie-oriented songs too. Like, consider where "Brick" landed when we ranked it in the Hot 100 Airplay RD. IIRC, it wasn't close to this high. Also, an epiphany -- if "Losing A Whole Year" can go from #33 in 120 Minutes to top 10 in this rankdown, imagine what the other songs from my list we'll rank in the future can do! Maybe "Fell On Black Days" can win 1994?

After janinho loses his #1, he promptly gets revenge by losing his #98.
Did it really have to be Beck, though 45
Tropicalia Beck
Year-End Placing: #89 Chart Peak: #21 Chart Weeks: 10 2024 points Standard Deviation: 24.46
A few days behind on me commenting in this Beck song. First I want to express how odd it is that one retains the memories of very random stuff from decades ago. So what randomly popped up in my mind just now: on a Friday night in 1998, KROQ did a triple world premiere for Alanis Morissette - Thank U, The Offspring - Pretty Fly for a White Guy, and Beck - Tropicalia. They played all 3 songs consecutively twice in a row. I recall thinking the Beck song being weird and thinking he’ll be the irrelevant one with the downhill career trajectory. It’s so ironic to me now how wrong I was, and nowadays Beck is the one wi5h most chart success in last 2 years, even though the other two artists were the ones with massive chart toppers selling in the tens of millions.

On the flipside of the 'popster' thing, it makes a difference that this is not a pop or Hot 100 rankdown, so you're also missing the aggressively mainstream/becky element that tanks anything that's not a super-duper well known smash hit. That works to the advantage of most content here, since it's not getting tanked for not being a pop smash.
Anyway, really glad to see Natalie make the top 10. This is a different beast than the Hot 100 Airplay rankdown so I'd wondered about her chances.

Yay at Karma Police making top 10. At least most of us here appreciate such a beautiful song.
Sad to see no other OK Computer singles make it.

I did not expect that many people to rank this in their bottom 7... but you'd have to have known I'd be one of those? 24. Intergalactic
- Beastie BoysWell, its about damn time. Loony Tunes. Angry Loony Tunes impersonating robots is what I got from this song. Forget about Limp Bizkit, and Kid Rock , Beastie Boys was the worst ever on the radio. If we had ranked 200 songs, this would probably still be #200 for me. 23. Dammit - blink-182Two words. Damn It. 22. Save Yourself
- Stabbing WestwardI don't recall this on the radio much. Not bad. Sounded like a better NIN song. 21. Inside Out - Eve 6This reveal seals the deal. two more Top 10 out and I'm toast. This is easily my favorite song by this band. 20. Life in Mono - Mono
I just couldn't get into this song. Not even for the female vocals. That's exactly what this percussion did. make the music sound like in mono. F U C K mono. Gimmi Stereo.

Of course snoozefest Karma Police and Perfect make the top 10. Don't get how people like those songs. But overall the other songs are great so I'll take it. This may shock you, but many of us here enjoy indie ballads. Not everything has to be upbeat and full of synths/fart sounds. Why does that Cody post strike me as something he might have responded to one of my posts?

Extras:
Going Out of My Head - Fatboy Slim Look at that. Fatboy Slim song I do not hate. I consider this a cool guitar oriented Instrumental, that could have used some good vocals to go along. Love the "cowbell"
Goodbye - Save Ferris I do not recall this, but I get a "Stray Cats Strut" vibe from this melod, so it works for me.
Stepping Stones - G. Love & Special Sauce Not for me at all.
You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight (Baby) - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy This is toooooo peppy for me not to like it. Wish this had been on the list.
Everything for Free - K's Choice I barely recall this one. I thought it had a cool guitar vibe.

THE TOP TEN Semisonic - Closing Time The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony Ben Folds Five - Brick Foo Fighters - My Hero The Smashing Pumpkins - Perfect Third Eye Blind - Jumper Natalie Imbruglia - Torn Radiohead - Karma Police Semisonic - Singing in My Sleep Third Eye Blind - Losing a Whole Year
Strong year in music makes for a strong Top 10. I actually like almost all these songs, except for two. I'm pretty sure you can all guess which ones?
- Any surprises in this top ten? Not really except "Brick" no one I knew back than liked that song. That "other" Semisonic song seems like a big WTF too.
- What songs that missed out disappoint you? I'm still banging my head over the fact that "My Own Prison" isn't here? Everyone I knew back than loved that song.
- Care to predict the top ten (or, at the very least, the #1)? what's left but to predict what I want to happen?
10. Brick 9. Karma Police
8. Singing In My Sleep 7. Bitter Sweet Symphony 6. Perfect 5. Torn 4. My Hero 3. Closing Time 2. Losing A Whole Year 1. Jumper
I'll take either 3EB song for the win please.

Wow I lost five top tens in a row how cool is that. 11-15 were all brutally robbed and just so Semisonic could double up and 3EB could have the wrong song (Losing A Year) in? Disappointing.
Also once again the wrong Smashing Pumpkins song is higher. I can see this becoming a trend.
10. Losing a Whole Year 9. Singing In My Sleep 8. Bittersweet Symphony 7. Closing Time 6. Brick 5. Karma Police 4. My Hero 3. Perfect 2. Jumper 1. Torn

I'm really happy with this top ten! Despite not having many of my top ten left, several of the remaining songs would've made my top ten in a weaker year. I'm especially pleased with how well "Brick", "Losing a Whole Year", "Perfect", and "Singing in My Sleep" have performed. I was also pleasantly surprised with "Save Yourself", "Shimmer", and "Spark" all making the top 25. My only real disappointment is that I would've liked to see the songs from Garbage do a little bit better.

The songs I have left are my 1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 13, 24, 27, 41. I think this is the best I’ve ever done in one of these! I was one “Wishlist” away from having my entire top 5 in the top 10. :’( I’m glad “Iris” just missed out, it would have been the lowest song I had in by a wide margin. It’s a good song but it’s really nothing special. Hoping my 1 wins this, I honestly don’t know what its odds are.

I'm typing in Georgia, size three font...naturally, because this is a rankdown I'm hosting. But if I'm posting this right before the top ten, it can only mean one thing: IT'S TOP TEN PREVIEW TIME. As always, if I have made a mistake or have left something out, please make sure to let me know!
(Also, I'm aware that the stats have not been posted yet. That's the next thing I'm working on.)
- These are the first top ten appearances for Ben Folds Five, Natalie Imbruglia, The Verve, and, most notably, Radiohead, who have come close multiple times, but have never quite made the top ten until now. - Third Eye Blind are making their first and second top ten appearances, and it's hard to expect these to be their last top ten appearances, either. With twice as many chances to win, can Third Eye Blind get to the top? - Also with two chances to win in their first and second top ten appearances are Semisonic. Like TEB, Semisonic's two songs in the top ten consist of one expected song and one surprise song. Will we see a surprise shortly? - The Smashing Pumpkins are one of this rankdown's "veterans" of the top ten, despite having only made two top ten appearances prior to tonight. Both were for "Stand Inside Your Love" in 2000. The Pumpkins should make more top tens in the future, but we'll see if "Perfect" can outdo the dual #8 performances of "Stand". - And finally, it has happened again. Surprise. Making their 25th top ten appearance are the kings of the rock chart rankdown, the Foo Fighters. They won't have many more chances to make retro top tens, but it's little surprise that "My Hero" is in this position.

I've been waiting for this particular moment, when I post the stats update literally 40 minutes before the scheduled start of the final update. I am hoping to be at least a little more prepared when 2018 Alt comes calling. (If I have not made this clear before, I'm hosting 2018 Alt. :kii: ) As always, if I make a mistake or leave something out, please let me know!

TOP. TEN. TIME.
As per usual (well, lately, anyway), instead of the usual previews, I will be offering a select group of statistics for everyone to chew on for the next eight songs. Unlike in the past, where I would use the same five statistics for all eight songs, I will be offering just three different stats for every song. Gotta try to make these even harder, you know? :kii:
