Glad to see I wasn't bottom ten in closeness. I guess fellow pop posters helped me with that?

WOO I MADE A DIFFERENCE! Eliminate my ranking and Karma Police wins. That's what I was saying in Discord, too. Though, again, I'm not complaining.

WOO I MADE A DIFFERENCE! Eliminate my ranking and Karma Police wins. You're lucky that it made it that far, or a song just as good won. Otherwise, you wouldn't have been dead.

A mighty fine #1, might be the only time I have a P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING in the top spot! Cool to see Radiohead get this high too. Overall a very strong top 10!
Great job Red!

In the top 10, if it wasn't for the 10 and the one, I thought the songs all were very great. Sadly, I never liked Bittersweet Symphony, and in contrast, I love Karma Police... why didn't it win? :( Anyway, thanks Red for the great rankdown, I enjoyed it very much. I usually post in the country forum, but I liked this year so much in alternative music, that I HAD to participate

10. My Hero - Foo FightersMy favorite Foo Fighter era is still to come, but this is always a great listen. 9. Losing a Whole Year - Third Eye Blinddamn! My last few top 20's a falling like flies. Believe it or not, KROQ is responsibe for my 3EB love. This is great news for 3EB songs to come, and the ones from that first Matchbox Twenty album. You know which one. 8. Torn - Natalie ImbrugliaGreat song. Big POPTART hit too? Too bad Natalie came and went. I think she had a few more "Torns" left in here. 7. Singing in My Sleep - SemisonicDidn't recall this one. Cool little diddy, but couldn't put up the fight vs the classics already etched in gold among my music archives. 6. Perfect - The Smashing PumpkinsNice melody. Their new single kinda reminds me of this one. I hope my favorite performs this great. It's the one the mentions Vampire. 5. Brick - Ben Folds FiveThumbs up, just because this stinker is finally out. Having to wait 95 songs for mt bottom ten to clear is unacceptable, but this borefest to the 100x was also unacceptable. Sounds like he is falling asleep. Anyway, You can imagine how surprised I was when Ben released the bop- a- thon "Rocking The Suburbs". Now can we get rid of the other bore a thon? 4. Jumper - Third Eye BlindI was kinda hoping this one would win. Partly because its my highest song left on the list, but also for that Bass breakdown building up to the climax. I'm a sucker for those. 3. Closing Time - SemisonicThere goes my last top 20. I have so many of these cd in my collection just for that one big hit. 2. Radiohead - Karma PoliceFirst off besides two songs, I'm not a fan of this band. I find them boring. I better see F U C K I N G "Creep" in the top 3 when we come across it. I'll also extra upgrade "High and Dry" I know the band considers these their worst songs, but I don't care. I like them and that's that. I' pretty sure I'll be the highest ranker for "Creep"? 1. Bitter Sweet Symphony - The VerveI have always like this song. The only downside is that its stays in the same melody all the way through. Music and singing. It's a good song. Good winner. I'll be honest. This is the song I really flipped for, because I love the noise. It did nothing in U.S., but peaked at #4 in U.K. The Verve - Love The Noise (DOC #24)Football . Even tho I got slaughtered, this was still loads of fun. At least I came in first place in the actual year end closeness. :kii: That works for me.

It's sad to see Karma Police miss the #1 spot, but considering I wasn't expecting it to be top 10, I'll take it. Solid top 10, overall. Surprised at both Garbage songs missing out the top 10 (ITIP in particular), considering Special's performance. Thanks for hosting, Red! This winner is hella disappointing. Bitter Sweet Symphony is good and all but in my opinion it is not at all worthy of being in the top ten, let alone winning. On the other hand, Karma Police is one of the best song that we’ll ever rank here and it got ROBBED at the very end.

Not the biggest fan of "Bittersweet Symphony", but my mom loves it. Will be sure to tell her it won a rankdown.

Pretty cool Rankdown!! I was pretty busy these last few days so I couldn't follow up closely. The top 10 was pretty good overall, even though I only had 4 of my top 10s, and one song in particular overstayed IMO: Singing in my Sleep (in my 40s). My top 15: 15. Perfect: a personal chart-topper... neither their first nor their last, so I look forward to charting their songs in future 1990s RDs 14. Time of Your Life (already wrote about it) 13. How's It Going To Be: A runner-up in my personal chart, that was my 2nd favorite of this album, but with time became my 3rd one 12. Push It: I really liked Garbage. This was a big hit back home, and a personal chart-topper. I loved that dance, pop, rock combo. I also like ITIP (my #17 in this RD) 11. Life in Mono: I LOVE the instrumentation, vibe, vocals. It made the top 5 of my personal chart, but my love for it really came by 2000 when I was all into this vibe. 10. Jumper: A personal top 3 that ended up becoming my second favorite song of this band, and now it's one of my 1990s favorites. That bass in the musical bridge and everything that comes afterwards is pretty good. 9. Closing Time: A personal chart-topper and a song that I still use frequently. 8. The Way: Another personal chart-topper, and a song that was a big hit back home in pop radio stations. It had a nice retro vibe, among other things thanks to that piano and guitar sounds. 7. Acquiesce: I was already a BIG fan of Oasis at that time. This was their 9th personal chart-topper and one of my favorites this year. Back home this was just a minor hit. However, The Masterplan was a big hit --another personal chart-topper, especially due to Noel's singing ) 6. Uninvited (already wrote about it) 5. Torn: A multi-week personal chart-topper and one of the biggest hits of the year back home in both pop and rock radio stations. I loved it since I first heard it. One of the best covers ever IMO. By the way, she would have a second hit back home -and a personal chart-topper with Wrong Impression in 2002 4. Iris: Contrary to Torn, I wasn't a big fan of this song when it was first released. It took me some time to love it, and then it reached the top of my personal chart. It fully clicked with me in early 2000 as it was part of the soundtrack of a key time in my life from January-March. Since then, it's one of my favorite 1990s songs. I was very close to rank this as my #1, but I conceded to the greater rockness of other songs. 3. Karma Police: A personal chat-topper. Unique composition, strong vocals, great mysterious, haunting vibe. One of my favorite Radiohead songs. 2. Celebrity Skin: I was utterly surprised that this left so early!! A multi-week personal chart-topper that I still listen to. Short but effective, strong but melodic. (Malibu was their second personal chart-topper) ... some of us pop-posters may also like this type of songs . 1. Bittersweet Symphony: A 2-week personal chart-topper and one of my favorites of this year. I'm always a fan of the use of strings in rock music in a smart way, and I really liked how this used the sampling an orchestral cover of a Rolling Stones song, over a more pop beat. I also loved the melody and even how Richard sang it. It just had the perfect combination that represented this year. PLUS, I loved the Urban Hymns album. I put Lucky Man at #25 in this RD, but that actually was 'just' a top 5 in my personal chart. The Verve reached the top of my personal chart with 2 other songs from UH: Sonnet (a song that was also a hit back home), and The Drugs Don't Work (a song that I initially overlooked when I just heard it, but that once I really listened to it, it really clicked emotionally with me and became my second favorite of the album, and made my top 10 this year.

- What songs do you think could or will make the top ten? What about a #1 prediction? Bitter Sweet Symphony (#1), Closing Time, Jumper, Iris, The Way are guaranteed...some others that I could see land up there (or at least in the top 20) are My Hero, Torn, Given to Fly, Karma Police, at OMG I JUST SAW THIS. You basically said my top 5 in order. Wow.

Just so you know, there's a radio station in Atlanta called Star 94 that absolutely burnt me out on most of the big Alternative crossovers to CHR in 1998. Seriously, thanks to Star 94, I'm still burnt out on "Torn," "Jumper," "Save Tonight" and others 20 years later. And I was burnt out on "Iris" for a while too, but that's the only one that I've put back in my own personal playlist. Interestingly, this is strictly a 1998 and early 1999 phenomenon. Star 94 didn't burn me out on any Alternative crossovers in 1996 or 1997.
Anyway, I'm glad to see my #1 and #2 make it into the top 20.

Extra:It's Alright - CandleboxFirst time listen. This is more than Alright. This is WOW! I like this one a lot. At times I got Tesla vibes. Top 40 on this least. I also can't recall this band sounding this good? Download? Check. for 1998 archives. The Ghost of Tom Joad - Rage Against the Machine Sometimes this band has some cool guitar riffs. This is a bit toned down on vocal angriness. Not Too Too Too Terrible. No tanking, but still nothing I would download. Can't Get Enough of You Baby - Smash MouthThat's Jennifer Love Hewitt dancing with John Smash Mouth. That lucky SOB. Great song. Hell yeah, Super high on my list and you all know it! One More Murder - Better Than EzraFirst time listen. I usually like this band. This was pretty boring Nice Guys Finish Last - Green Easily one of my top 30 on this list. Easily. I had a mad crush on Jennifer Love Hewitt from 1996-2000.

Late to comment because I was in Buffalo for sports but well done Football. The top 10 this year was great, and it's really cool to see The Verve win!
