Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter V' Set For No. 1 On Billboard 200 Chart With Third-Largest Streaming Week Ever
News
By Keith Caulfield | October 01, 2018 9:47 AM EDT Lil Wayne
Lil Wayne will return in a big way to the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, as his new release, Tha Carter V, is set for a splashy bow atop the chart. Industry forecasters suggest the set, which was released on Sept. 28 via Young Money/ Republic Records, will likely launch with over 450,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 4 in the U.S. — and has a shot at reaching a half-million units earned.
Furthermore, the album could generate over 400 million on-demand audio streams for its songs in its first week in the U.S. That sum would garner the set the third-largest streaming week ever for an album, trailing only the debut frames of Drake’s Scorpion (745.9 million, according to Nielsen Music) and Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys (431.3 million) earlier in 2018.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Oct. 13-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Tha Carter V should debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Oct. 7.
Assuming Tha Carter V debuts at No. 1, it will become Lil Wayne’s fourth leader on the tally. He previously hit No. 1 with Tha Carter IV (2011), I Am Not a Human Being (2010) and Tha Carter III (2008).
Lil Wayne’s last release to chart was 2013’s I Am Not a Human Being II, which debuted and peaked at No. 2.
Other albums on course for high debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 include Cher’s Dancing Queen, Logic’s YSIV and Kevin Gates’ Luca Brasi 3. The three albums were released on Sept. 28, along with a bevy of other titles from notable names. The end of September always brings a rush of significant albums to market, as Sept. 30 marked the end of the eligibility year for the upcoming Grammy Awards.
Other albums aiming for noteworthy bows on next week’s Billboard 200, all drawn from the Sept. 28 release schedule, include alt-J’s Reduxer, Elevation Worship’s Hallelujah Here Below, Loretta Lynn’s Wouldn’t It Be Great, Rod Stewart’s Blood Red Roses, Tom Petty’s An American Treasure, Beartooth’s Disease and Cypress Hill’s Elephants on Acid.

New albums from Cher, Logic and Kevin Gates are all heading for debuts inside the top five of the Billboard 200 chart next week, according to industry forecasters.
As previously reported, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V is heading for a No. 1 debut next week, with perhaps over 450,000 units.
Logic’s YSIV could bow with over 160,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to prognosticators. If it starts as expected, it will garner the hip-hop artist his fifth top 10 effort. The new set, which was issued on Sept. 28 via Visionary/Def Jam Recordings, follows a pair of No. 1s from Logic: Bobby Tarantino II and Everybody, in 2018 and 2017, respectively.
Meanwhile, Cher’s Dancing Queen may debut with 160,000 equivalent album units. The all-ABBA covers album was released via Warner Bros. Records on Sept. 28 and would earn the diva her sixth top 10 album. It follows her previous studio set, Closer to the Truth, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 in 2013.
The new album was led by the single “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight),” which rises 15-8 on the Dance Club Songs chart (dated Oct. 6), notching Cher her 14th top 10 hit on the tally.
Gates’ Luca Brasi 3 is on track to launch with perhaps 70,000 units and would land the rapper his third top 10 set. He previously visited the region with By Any Means 2 (No. 4 on the Oct. 14, 2017-dated chart) and Islah (No. 2; Oct. 20, 2016). Luca Brasi 3 was released on Sept. 28 through Bread Winners’ Association/Atlantic Group.
Other new titles from the Sept. 28 release schedule heading for significant debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 include alt-J’s Reduxer, Elevation Worship’s Hallelujah Here Below, Loretta Lynn’s Wouldn’t It Be Great, Rod Stewart’s Blood Red Roses, Tom Petty’s An American Treasure, Beartooth’s Disease and Cypress Hill’s Elephants on Acid.

Cher Ties Solo-Career-Best Rank on Billboard 200 as 'Dancing Queen' Debuts at No. 3
10/7/2018 by Keith Caulfield
The album launches with 2018’s biggest sales week for a pop album by a woman.
Cher’s new album Dancing Queen debuts at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, tying for the diva’s highest-charting solo album ever. It also earns the biggest sales week of 2018 for a pop album by a woman, and Cher’s largest sales week since Nielsen Music began electronically tracking music sales in 1991.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 13-dated chart -- where Dancing Queen debuts at No. 3 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
As previously reported, Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V debuts at No. 1 on the latest Billboard 200 chart.
Cher also reached No. 3 with her previous studio set, 2013’s Closer to the Truth. (Cher was also one-half of Sonny & Cher, which peaked at No. 2 on the chart in 1965 with Look at Us.)
Dancing Queen -- comprised entirely of ABBA covers -- bows with 153,000 units, of which 150,000 are in album sales. The set generated about 1,000 in TEA units and 2,000 in SEA units. Dancing Queen’s sturdy bow was encouraged by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer for her upcoming U.S. tour, as well as old-fashioned album sales through stores like Target, Walmart, iTunes, Amazon and the like.
Dancing Queen is also the top-selling album of the week with 150,000 copies sold. It marks Cher’s first No. 1 on the Top Album Sales chart and her largest sales week for an album since Nielsen Music began electronically tracking sales in 1991. Cher’s previous biggest one-week sales sum came in 2003, when The Very Best of Cher started with 122,000 copies sold (April 14, 2003 chart).
Dancing Queen also tallies the biggest sales week for a pop album by a woman in 2018, and the second-largest sales frame for a pop set this year (trailing only the debut week of Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods, when it started with 242,000 copies sold on the Feb. 17-dated list). The last pop album by a woman to yield a larger sales week was Taylor Swift’s reputation, which sold 232,000 in its second stanza (chart dated Dec. 9, 2017).

Lil Wayne's 'Tha Carter V' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 With Second-Largest Streaming Week Ever for an Album
10/7/2018 by Keith Caulfield
Owen Sweeney/Invision/AP Lil Wayne performs on Day 3 of the 2018 Firefly Music Festival at The Woodlands on June 16, 2018 in Dover, Del. Plus, top 10 debuts for Logic, Cher, Kevin Gates and Tom Petty.
Lil Wayne lands his fourth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as Tha Carter V debuts atop the tally.
The set, which was released on Sept. 28 via Young Money/Republic Records, makes a splash with 480,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music. That sum is the third-largest week for an album in 2018. Further, Tha Carter V also opens with the second-biggest streaming week ever for an album, with 433 million on-demand audio streams logged for its songs in its first week.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Oct. 13-dated chart -- where Tha Carter V debuts at No. 1 -- will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Of Tha Carter V’s 480,000 units, most were driven by SEA units: 325,000. The rest of the title’s opening overall unit sum is comprised of album sales totaling 141,000 and TEA units equaling 14,000.
Lil Wayne’s Fourth No. 1: Tha Carter V is Lil Wayne’s fourth leader on the Billboard 200. He previously topped the tally with Tha Carter IV (two weeks at No. 1 in 2011), I Am Not a Human Being (one week at No. 1 in 2010) and Tha Carter III (three weeks at No. 1, 2008). In total, Tha Carter V is Lil Wayne’s 15th entry on the list and 11th top 10.
Third-Biggest Week for an Album in 2018: As Tha Carter V bows with 480,000 units earned, it registers the third-largest week for an album in 2018. The only bigger weeks were logged by Drake’s Scorpion (732,000 units when it debuted at No. 1 on the July 14-dated tally) and Travis Scott’s Astroworld (537,000 in its debut frame, Aug. 18).
Second-Largest Streaming Week Ever for an Album: Tha Carter V storms in with 325,000 SEA units, which translates to 433 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s tracks in its debut frame. That’s the second-biggest streaming week ever posted by an album. The only larger single-week sum was earned by another album from the Young Money camp: Drake’s Scorpion, when it launched with 745.9 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks earlier this year.
Tha Carter V leads a busy top 10, which includes five debuts, with new arrivals filling out the top four spots. It’s the first time the top four have all been debuts in nearly a year. It last happened on the Nov. 14, 2017-dated tally, when Kenny Chesney’s Live in No Shoes Nation, Kelly Clarkson’s Meaning of Life, Chris Brown’s Heartbreak on a Full Moon and 21 Savage, Offset and Metro Boomin’s Without Warning bowed at Nos. 1-4, respectively.
On the new Billboard 200, Logic’s YSIV enters at No. 2 with 167,000 units (122,000 from album sales). It’s the hip-hop artist’s second album to reach the top two in 2018, following his chart-topping Bobby Tarantino II on the March 24-dated list. In total, Logic has racked up five top 10s.
YSIV’s opening week was powered by album sales, driven by merchandise/album bundles sold through his official website. The album also generated 2,000 TEA units and 42,000 SEA units (equaling 57.9 million on-demand audio streams for its tracks).
At No. 3, Cher’s Dancing Queen debuts, tying for the diva’s highest-charting solo album ever.
Dancing Queen is also the top-selling album of the week, with 150,000 copies sold.
At No. 4 on the new Billboard 200, Kevin Gates’ Luca Brasi 3 bows with 78,000 units (with 18,000 of that sum in album sales). The set starts mostly on the strength of streaming activity, with 59,000 SEA units (translating to 76.1 million on-demand audio streams of the title’s tracks). Luca Brasi 3 is Gates’ third top 10 effort, following By Any Means 2 (No. 4; Oct. 14, 2017) and Islah (No. 2; Feb. 20, 2016).
A quartet of former No. 1s follows Gates on the new chart: Drake’s Scorpion falls 4-5 (56,000 units; down 11 percent), Eminem’s Kamikaze slips 3-6 (50,000 units; down 24 percent), Travis Scott’s Astroworld descends 5-7 (49,000 units; down 14 percent) and Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys moves 6-8 (42,000 units; down 6 percent).
Tom Petty’s archival release An American Treasure arrives at No. 9, giving the rocker his 13th top 10 effort. The retrospective set -- which includes many previously unreleased recordings -- debuts with 34,000 units (32,000 in album sales). An American Treasure is available in an array of configurations, including a 26-track edition and a 60-track deluxe version. The set is Petty’s first posthumous release, following his death on Oct. 2, 2017.
Rounding out the new top 10 is XXXTentacion’s former No. 1 ?, which climbs 14-10 with 32,000 units (up 5 percent).

Looks like everyone won in the end. Legend Tunechi made a triumphant return, Goddess Cher got her first-ever #1 selling album and that other rapper with cringy lyrics will now be able to tell his grand-kids that he was once sandwiched by talent.

1->88, how is that possible!
Also Rod Stewart flopping so hard, he was one of the biggest stars on album chart during the previous decade

Five Reasons Why Lil Wayne Had Such a Big First Week For 'Tha Carter V' 10/9/2018 by Andrew Unterberger
Prince Williams/WireImage Lil Wayne performs at 2018 A3C festival at Georgia Freight Depot on Oct. 7, 2018 in Atlanta.
The official numbers are in for Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V in its first week of availability, and it's a triumph. The album earned 480,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music, to launch at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, while debuting a record-tying 22 entries on the Billboard Hot 100. The staggering numbers make complete one of the year's most successful comebacks, following a long period that the rapper born Dwayne Carter essentially spent in the recording wilderness. Feuding with former label head and mentor Bryan "Birdman" Williams held up the recording and release of Carter V for nearly a half decade, until Wayne finally made a clean split from Cash Money Records earlier this year.
In the meantime, the rapper released several mixtapes and the 2015 Tidal exclusive Free Weezy Album, but received only faint attention for the projects. It was part of a commercial (and arguably artistic) decline that had encompassed most of Weezy's 2010s, including his most recent official wide release, 2013's I Am Not a Human Being II, which sold respectably (217k first week) but underperformed compared to the MC's prior releases, and drew reviews that were middling at best. So why was Tha Carter V such a resounding win? Here's five things the No. 1 album in the country had going for it.
1. Quick rollout. It was just four months ago that news broke that Wayne had settled his lawsuit with Cash Money, and not even a month ago that Wayne revealed (via his Billboard cover story) that Tha Carter V was now officially on its way. Its firm release date wasn't announced until the Wednesday before, when Weezy released a charming teaser video that divulged the album would be coming out on his birthday (Sept. 28). No songs were released ahead of time, and even the tracklist and cover remained largely a mystery in the hours leading up to its midnight drop.
And as we've seen time and again in recent years, the less press an album has in the months leading up to its release -- particularly in the hip-hop world -- the more furor it tends to generate when it unexpectedly arrives. Eminem learned this lesson recently, when last year's over-hyped and somewhat undercooked Revival received an underwhelming response after a months-long rollout, and then this year's vengeful Kamikaze posted much stronger numbers as a sneak release no one saw coming. After a half-decade of waiting for an album, it's tough to still make it seem like a pleasant surprise, but with Tha Carter V, Wayne somehow pulled it off.
2. Good timing. Released over a weekend (Sept. 28-30) that also had two other major hip-hop releases on the schedule, Logic's Young Sinatra IV and Kanye West's Yandhi, created a wave of excitement for rap fans that helped raise the public profile of (and excitement for) all three sets. Having both Wayne and Kanye in the mix allowed fans in their 20s to wax nostalgic about '00s release days spent lining up at stores on release day to buy physical CDs, while even older fans could flashback almost exactly 20 years to Sept. 29, 1998 -- often deemed the greatest release day in hip-hop history, due to simultaneous releases from OutKast, JAY-Z, A Tribe Called Quest and many others. Of course in 2018, one of those much-anticipated albums ended up not dropping at all: Yandhi was first delayed until Saturday night, and then pushed back all the way to late November. Meanwhile, Kanye spent that Saturday night performing on SNL, controversially wearing a MAGA hat and making unaired (but later heavily circulated) comments about being "bullied" backstage for his pro-Trump wardrobe. This may have just served to further drive listeners to Tha Carter V, however -- at a time when supporting Kanye feels more fraught than ever for many fans, listening to new material from his only real challenger for late-'00s hip-hop supremacy was by contrast a refreshingly nostalgic and generally satisfying experience.
3. Strong branding. While Wayne has more noteworthy running album series than nearly any other figure in rap history -- including Dedication, Sorry 4 the Wait, I Am Not a Human Being and several other brand-name LPs and mixtapes with one or multiple sequels to their credit -- there's still something hallowed about his Tha Carter series. The first one launched him into the mainstream as a solo star, the second one solidified his cult and remains a Weezy fan favorite to this day, and the third one served as his commercial peak by selling over a million copies first week and winning a best rap album Grammy. Even Tha Carter IV, which received mixed reviews and a lesser fan reception than III, still sold nearly a million copies (964k) first week, and long stood as easily Wayne's most successful project of the last decade. So while Wayne had released some more marginal works since The Carter IV's 2011 drop, titling his most recent album Tha Carter V essentially let listeners know that he meant business this time. As with JAY-Z and his three-album Blueprint series, or Eminem with his Marshall Mathers LPs 1 & 2, it's a title that even casual music fans can understand the significance of, signaling to audiences that after a period of perhaps not giving his best effort on recent projects, Wayne was once again ready to give fans -- as he says in the set's trailer video - "all of me... more than me."
4. Embracing streaming. In truth, Tha Carter V only sold a small fraction of the copies moved by the last two entries in the series: just 141k in first-week sales, less than even I Am Not a Human Being 2 in its opening frame. But that doesn't really count as a loss for Wayne, because the album was so enormous on streaming services: The 433 million on-demand streams the album drew in its first week of availability ranked as the second-highest total in history, behind only protégé Drake's recent blockbuster Scorpion (745.9 million).
It's not a surprise the album was so well-streamed, because despite the rapper being a holdover from the days of physical CDs and iTunes downloads, Wayne fitted Tha Carter V to translate to the streaming era. It's 23 tracks long -- longest of any of the Carter sets so far -- which inevitably attracts more plays total across its many tracks. And the album also features high-profile appearances from more contemporary Spotify stars like Kendrick Lamar, the late XXXTentacion and Travis Scott-- all of whom appear on the album's first half, and whose presence have helped the tracks they appear on ("Mona Lisa," "Don't Cry" and "Let It Fly," respectively) become the album's three most-streamed tracks, in fact ending the tracking week as the top three songs on Billboard's Streaming Songs chart. Taking it even further, Wayne also participated in an even-more-modern promotional tactic shortly following the release of Tha Carter V: He posted a Twitter video of his kids dancing to the set's "Uproar," helping spread the word of the #UproarChallenge -- a similar movement to the one that helped Drake's "In My Feelings" go supernova on the Billboard Hot 100 shortly after the release of Scorpion. Whether "Uproar" will explode in similar fashion remains to be seen, but the track does debut at No. 7 on the Hot 100 this week -- and No. 4 on the Streaming Songs chart -- demonstrating how Wayne's embrace of the viral allows him to continue posting superstar numbers in 2018, even with songs that sound like (and prominently feature both samples and artists from) the turn of the century.
5. It's Weezy F. Baby. All the talk of timing, branding, and streaming-friendless with Wayne shouldn't bury the primary takeaway from Tha Carter V's big week here: Lil Wayne is enjoying his comeback moment primarily because he made his strongest album in ages. It's Wayne revitalized, darker and more personal than ever, but still sounding joyful just because he sounds fully invested and involved in his music again. The people agree: check review aggregation website Metacritic and Tha Carter V has Wayne's highest rating -- both in critics' Metascore and even by average user grade -- since Tha Carter III a decade earlier. It was clear from the Internet response to the news of his imminent return after so long adrift that people were ready to root for Lil Wayne again. But if he hadn't made an album that reminded people of why he was once widely considered (by himself above all) as the best rapper alive -- if he hadn't made an album that was worthy of the brand name its title reflected -- that good will would have evaporated pretty quickly. Tha Carter V was that album, and now Weezy has reassumed his place among hip-hop's ruling class.

1->88, how is that possible! Also Rod Stewart flopping so hard, he was one of the biggest stars on album chart during the previous decade Rod Stewart had some minor success with a series of albums with cover songs in the previous decade but his real success would come from the 70s and 80s Brockhampton had a merchandise/album bundle promo which apparently ended

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: 'Rick and Morty' Soundtrack Arrives, Tops Comedy & Vinyl Albums Charts
NewsTV / Film
By Keith Caulfield | October 12, 2018 9:07 PM EDT
On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated Oct. 13), Lil Wayne scored his fourth No. 1 with the chart-topping arrival of Tha Carter V. The set blew in with 480,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 141,000 were in album sales.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).
Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:
— Soundtrack, Rick and Morty – No. 107 — The soundtrack to the Cartoon Network animated TV series Rick and Morty debuts at No. 4 on the Soundtracks chart, earning 7,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 6,000 were in traditional album sales, with 3,000 in vinyl LP sales alone (No. 1 on the Vinyl Albums chart). The set also launches at No. 1 on the Comedy Albums tally.
Rick and Morty follows another successful animated TV series soundtrack from Sub Pop Records: The Bob’s Burgers Music Album. The companion set to Fox TV’s Bob’s Burgers has sold 74,000 since its release on May 12, 2017. It peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200, No. 3 on Soundtracks, No. 1 on Comedy Albums and No. 2 on Vinyl Albums.
— Rod Stewart, Blood Red Roses – No. 62 — Stewart’s 43rd charting effort is his first album for Republic Records and bows with 10,000 units and also launches at No. 7 on Top Rock Albums. The set was led by the top 10 Adult Contemporary hit “Didn’t I.” The track -- his 23rd top 10 -- marked his first non-holiday and non-cover top 10 hit on the list since 1999, when “Faith of the Heart” peaked at No. 3.
— Aretha Franklin, The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970 – No. 65 — The late diva’s new compilation debuts at No. 65, marking her 48th chart entry. The 34-track collection includes her nine Billboard Hot 100 top 10-charting hits between 1967-1970 (all of which were on Atlantic Records) including “Respect,” “Chain of Fools” and “Baby I Love You.” (Franklin charted an additional seven top 10 Hot 100 hits after 1970: five on Atlantic, and three with Arista Records.)
— Loretta Lynn, Wouldn’t It Be Great – No. 78 — The living legend collects her 17th charting album on the tally, as Wouldn’t It Be Great bows at No. 78. Lynn charted her first 13 entries between 1967 and 1975, and then did not revisit the list until 1993, when Honky Tonk Angels -- her collaborative album with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette -- reached No. 42. She then came back in 2004 with her Jack White-produced Van Lear Rose (No. 24), and then in 2016 and this year with Full Circle (No. 19) and Wouldn’t It Be Great, respectively.
— Kids See Ghosts, Kids See Ghosts – No. 197 — The album re-enters after its release on CD on Sept. 28. (The set was previously only available to purchase as a digital download.) The title earned 5,000 units (up 34 percent) with a little more than 1,000 of that sum in album sales (up 388 percent). The set hits vinyl LP on Nov. 2.

With Cher, Rod, Aretha, and Loretta all charting it’s like 1979 all over again. Haha.
