Especially when you consider Canada is Drake's homebase, and has a built-in advantage on terrestrial radio, which requires 35% Canadian content. I keep seeing this get brought up as if it's the only reason the successful Canadian artists are successful in Canada, which just isn't true. Canada has a plethora of artists that can be falling under the umbrella for the law, yet Canadian stations aren't playing them in favor of playing the artists that people actually want to hear. Plus, I'm not well versed on the law, but doesn't old material count as well? So if they wanted to, they could just up their spins of an old Alanis track or Celine track and call it a day, but they don't. There's just such a large amount of qualifying music that the law really doesn't matter. They could remove it and it wouldn't change much of anything. I mean, when's the last time Carly Rae Jepsen had a hit in her homeland? She clearly isn't benefiting from it.

But there was a time when a homegrown act could make a living off Canadian-only airplay and sales. That's way harder now, because streaming of pop songs just tends to follow the US trends and siphoned off a lot of pop radio exposure. As the fact that Drake spending less time at #1 shows, Canadian acts have lost that homebase advantage.
The issue isn't the Drakes, Bieber or Carly Raes. It's the Troopers, Tragically Hip, Down With Websters that just aren't being replaced by newer Canadian acts.

Janet Jackson Earns Milestone 20th No. 1 on Dance Club Songs Chart With 'Made for Now' News By Gordon Murray | October 18, 2018 3:34 PM EDT
Miss Jackson's collab with Daddy Yankee is her first leader since 2010. Janet Jackson, with Daddy Yankee, jumps to her 20th career leader on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart (dated Oct. 20) with "Made for Now" (2-1). The R&B-leaning original was remixed by Dirty Disco, Eric Kupper and Dirty Werk, among others.
"Made" is Yankee's first topper. It's his second top 10 and third chart hit, following "Despacito" (with Luis Fonsi and featuring Justin Bieber; No. 8, July 2017) and "Azukita" (with Steve Aoki, Play-N-Skillz and Elvis Crespo; No. 48, April 2018). "Made" is Jackson's 40th chart entry and 34th top 10. It's also her second shared No. 1, following "Scream," with brother Michael, in 1995.
Jackson is the fourth act in the chart's 42-year history to amass at least 20 No. 1s, following Madonna (46), Rihanna (32) and Beyoncé (22). "Made" is Jackson's first topper in close to nine years, ending her longest gap between leaders, since "Make Me" assumed the throne in January 2010.
Here's a recap of Jackson's 20 No. 1s on Billboard's Dance Club Songs chart: Title (Year, Weeks at No. 1, if more than one) "When I Think of You" (1986, three weeks at No. 1) "Control" (1986, three) "The Pleasure Principle" (1987, two) "Miss You Much" (1989, two) "Rhythm Nation" (1989, three) "Escapade" (1990, three) "Alright" (1990, two) "That's the Way Love Goes" (1993) "If" (1993, two) "Scream" (Michael Jackson & Janet Jackson; 1995,two) "Together Again" (1998) "Go Deep" (1998) "All for You" (2001, three) "Someone to Call My Lover" (2001) "Just a Little While" (2004) "All Nite (Don't Stop)" (2004) "So Excited" (feat. Khia, 2007) "Feedback" (2008) "Make Me" (2010) "Made for Now" (Janet & Daddy Yankee; 2018)

Marshmello & Bastille's 'Happier' Hits No. 1 on Dance/Mix Show Airplay Chart News By Gordon Murray | October 18, 2018 3:49 PM EDT
Plus, Nicky Jam & Steve Aoki cruise with crossover hit "Jaleo." Marshmello notches his third No. 1 and Bastille boasts its first on Billboard's Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart (dated Oct. 20) with "Happier" (2-1). The collab continues atop Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales (for seven weeks running), Dance/Electronic Streaming Songs (six) and Hot Dance/Electronic Songs (four).
Plus, without the benefit of any promoted remixes, "Happier" hits the top 10 on Dance Club Songs (11-6). Additionally, it becomes Marshmello's first top 10 and Bastille's second (after the No. 5-peaking "Pompeii" in 2014) on the Billboard Hot 100, where it jumps 13-8.
Shifting to Hot Dance/Electronic Songs, Nicky Jam and Steve Aoki soar 48-19 with "Jaleo." The track marks Jam's first appearance on the chart; concurrently, it bows at No. 24 on Hot Latin Songs, where Aoki adds his second entry. "Jaleo" is Aoki's 19th entry on Hot Dance/Electronic Songs; he's also charted with "Just Hold On," with Louis Tomlinson (No. 7, December 2016). In its first full week of availability (ending Oct. 11), "Jaleo" drew 1.1 million domestic streams and sold 3,000 downloads, according to Nielsen Music. The latter figure is also good for a No. 9 start on Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales.
On Top Dance/Electronic Albums, synthwave act GUNSHIP debuts at No. 4 with Dark All Day (5,000 equivalent album units). With most of its sum from traditional album sales, Dark starts at No. 1 on both Dance/Electronic Album Sales and Heatseekers Albums, becoming the act's first Billboard chart-toppers.

Ella Mai's 'Trip' Hits Top 10 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart News By Trevor Anderson | October 18, 2018 3:45 PM EDT
Ella Mai collects her second top 10 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, as “Trip” skips 15-10 on the ranking dated Oct. 20. “Trip” improves on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, which combines radio airplay, sales and streaming data into its tabulation, chiefly thanks to gains at radio. The single climbs 4-2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart via a 9 percent boost to 26.5 million in audience in the week ending Oct. 14, according to Nielsen Music.
Meanwhile, the track climbs 17-12 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, despite a 2 percent dip to 22.6 million U.S. clicks in the week ending Oct. 11. Sales, too, slide 3 percent to 7,000 in the week. Despite the drop, “Trip” rebounds 16-14 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales.
“Trip” follows Mai’s breakout hit, “Boo’d Up,” which reached No. 4 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Both singles appear on the British singer-songwriter’s eponymous, debut full-length album, released Oct. 12.
‘Call It’ a Hit: “Trip,” in addition, maintains its No. 1 rank for a second week on the Hot R&B Songs chart. There, Mai gains a third top 10 (after “Boo’d Up” and “Trip”) as the Chris Brown-assisted “Whatchamacallit,” debuts at No. 9. The collaboration opens at No. 3 on R&B Digital Sales (5,000 sold in the week ending Oct. 11) and No. 15 on R&B Streaming Songs (5.1 million plays in the week). With the new debut, Brown collects his 25th top 10 on Hot R&B Songs since the chart began in 2012, notably, by which time he was an established star.
Shmurda Returns: In non-Mai news, Bobby Shmurda returns to the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for the first time since 2015 as 6ix9ine’s “Stoopid,” on which he features, starts at No. 15. The pair’s teamup debuts at No. 4 on R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Sales (13,000 sold) and No. 11 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs (20.8 million clicks). Shmurda previously appeared on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs twice: His “Hot Boy” topped the chart for two weeks in 2014, while follow-up “Bobby Bitch” climbed to No. 25. 6ix9ine, meanwhile, scores his ninth hit on the chart, and third-best showing thus far, trailing the No. 3-peaking “FEFE,” featuring Nicki Minaj & Murda Beatz, and his debut hit “Gummo,” which sprang to No. 5 in 2017.

Mavis Staples Scores First Solo No. 1 Song as Hozier Collaboration 'Nina Cried Power' Tops Adult Alt Songs News By Kevin Rutherford | October 18, 2018 1:24 PM EDT
Staples previously led Billboard charts as part of The Staple Singers.
Hozier lands his second No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart, as "Nina Cried Power," featuring Mavis Staples, rises 3-1 on the Oct. 20-dated tally. The Irish singer-songwriter returns to the top of the chart for the first time since 2014's "Take Me to Church," his first title to reach the ranking, ruled for one week (Aug. 16, 2014). It became Hozier's first No. 1 song on a Billboard chart and rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 that December.
Thus, Staples scores her first solo No. 1 song on a Billboard chart thanks to her featured credit on "Nina." She first placed a solo song on a survey ("I Have Learned to Do Without You") in 1970. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame enshrinee has also celebrated multiple chart-toppers as part of The Staple Singers.
Although "Power" is Staples' first No. 1 on Adult Alternative Songs, it's not her first appearance on the list, with each of her four charting titles logged as a featured artist. First was Natalie Merchant's "Build a Levee" (No. 17, April 13, 2002), followed by Arcade Fire's "I Give You Power" (No. 18, March 4, 2017) and Benjamin Booker's "Witness" (No. 29, May 20, 2017). In a meta musical moment, Staples is one of multiple musicians named in the "Nina" chorus, alongside Nina Simone (the song's namesake artist), Billie Holiday, Curtis Mayfield and other legends.
The song concurrently reaches a new peak on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, lifting 29-28 with 2.3 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. It also ranks at No. 33 on Alternative Songs.
"Nina" is the lead single from Hozier's EP of the same name, released Sept. 7.

"High Hopes," Panic! at the Disco The band collects its third top 40 Hot 100 hit, as "High Hopes" jumps 49-35. The act first hit No. 7 with its debut entry, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," in 2006 and No. 40 with "Hallelujah" in 2015. "Hopes" also becomes the act's first top 40 Radio Songs hit (41-28; 37.9 million, up 27 percent) since "Sins," which reached No. 13. "Hopes" holds at its No. 3 high on Alternative Songs, where it follows Panic's first No. 1, "Say Amen (Saturday Night)," in June, and becomes its first top 10 on Adult Pop Songs (14-9).
"Broken," lovelytheband The band earns its first top 40 Hot 100 hit, as "Broken" climbs 48-39. After topping the Alternative Songs airplay chart for nine weeks beginning in April, it bumps 4-3 on Adult Pop Songs and 19-18 on Pop Songs.
"Venom," Eminem Following the arrival of its official video Oct. 5, the day that the film of the same name premiered nationwide, "Venom" re-enters the Hot 100 at No. 43, up 362 percent to 17.7 million U.S. streams. It first spent a week at No. 49 on the chart dated Sept. 15, when parent album Kamikaze launched at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
"Breathin," Ariana Grande As it ascends 68-55 on the Hot 100, after debuting at its No. 22 high when parent album Sweetener opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (Sept. 1), "Breathin" enters the Radio Songs chart at No. 43 (28.5 million in audience, up 31 percent). "Breathin" rises 21-19 on Pop Songs (up 25 percent in plays), while prior Sweetener single "God Is a Woman" keeps at its No. 6 peak (up 3 percent). In an era in which consumers have access to an entire album upon its release, Republic Records is concurrently promoting both songs, instead of following a more traditional model of spacing their radio runs further apart.

Twenty One Pilots' Trench' Rules Top Rock Albums, Entire Set Hits Top 25 of Hot Rock Songs Chart 10/19/2018 by Kevin Rutherford
The duo's fifth album draws the duo's biggest single-week unit count.
The entirety of twenty one pilots' new album Trench storms Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart as the set launches at No. 1 on the Top Rock Albums and Alternative Albums charts dated Oct. 20. Trench starts atop both lists with 175,000 equivalent album units earned, according to Nielsen Music. That exceeds the 147,000-unit debut of 2015's Blurryface, giving twenty one pilots their best single-week unit count. The new set is the duo's second No. 1 on each list, after Blurryface led Top Rock Albums for nine weeks and Alternative Albums for 21, the latter the second-most atop the ranking in its history, trailing only Imagine Dragons' Evolve (32).
Five Trench tracks occupy the Hot Rock Songs top 10, the first time that feat has been accomplished not by virtue of an artist's passing; previously, Linkin Park, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince and David Bowie each claimed at least half the top 10 following the deaths of Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, Petty, Prince and Bowie. They're paced by lead Trench single "Jumpsuit," which vaults back to its No. 6 peak, first reached on the July 21-dated list.
All 14 songs from Trench chart in the Hot Rock Songs top 25, also a record among artists who accomplished the feat not following an artist's passing; Linkin Park holds the records for the most concurrent top 10s (seven) and top 25 entries (18). Trench songs occupy 11 of the 25 spots on Rock Streaming Songs, led by current single "My Blood," which re-enters at No. 5 (7.2 million streams, up 5 percent). The only acts to exceed that amount in a single week, Bowie and Linkin Park, did so following the deaths of Bowie and Bennington, respectively.
After "Jumpsuit" held the No. 1 spot on the Alternative Songs airplay chart for three weeks beginning July 28, "Blood" rises 7-6. On the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, "Blood" enters the top 10 (12-10, 6.5 million audience impressions).
