Girls Like You is just benefitting from Top 40 & HAC having a drought. It honestly feels like a fluke similar to Don't Wanna Know spending 8 weeks #1 on radio.

Longevity is a key factor, too, though. "Happy" obviously did not have much, despite at one point blowing up massively. "Blurred Lines" had better longevity than "Happy", but it still wasn't enough, since "Roar" and "Royals" were fresher tunes in the beginning of fall 2013. Like you said, "Girls Like You" is just lucky because its competition ("Better Now", "Youngblood") is choking, and, for whatever reason, Pop and Hot AC are deciding not to let go of "Girls Like You" for newer tunes. "We Belong Together", like the other two songs, apparently peaked on all formats simultaneously (more or less), so it had a pretty big fall, too, especially when "Gold Digger" came around.

The record for audience impressions at that time was only 105 million (set by Celine earlier that year), meaning Iris had below 105 million, so 30 million was a big amount and could've likely put TBIM at #1.

"Iris" peaked at top 10 on the Mainstream Rock chart, another format which wasn't included on the airplay charts in 1998. I'm sure it would have gotten some pretty nice support from that format being added.

You've opened up a legit question. Why did it take so long to add all those radio formats to the Hot 100 Airplay chart?
From 1984 to 1993, it was essentially just Mainstream Top 40.

It then added AC, Hot AC, Alternative and Rhythmic, all considered splintered subsets of Top 40 at that time...
Didn't add R&B, Country, Latin, Christian, etc till late 1998.

The answer I always got from BB staff was that prior to the 1990s, all other radio formats were so low in overall radio audience that their inclusion was next to negligible.

The 1992-1998 charts would've given the 2001-2006/2017-present charts a run for their money with Urban dominance had Urban & Urban AC airplay been included.

I mean, R&B/Hip-Hop already dominated the Hot 100 for 1992-1998, so just adding in airplay for them to the mix... perhaps that was the reason they waited so long.

Also ofcourse, since Country was a huge seller in the 90s, who knows what the Hot 100 would've looked like with Country airplay.
Achy Breaky Heart peaked #4, without Country Airplay, where it spent 5 weeks #1.

Perhaps, not even #1 peaks for huge Country songs, but huge longevity similar to Faith Hill's Breathe in 2000 after Country airplay was added.

That seems to be the trend for huge Country hits period even today (Before He Cheats, Meant to Be, Body Like a Backroad, Cruise, Need You Now, etc).
