This was a brutally mixed bag. On one hand, we got rid of the last couple of songs that I have even a little problem with, and almost every song remaining is somewhere in my top 35 40, most in my top 30. But on the other hand, I lost four top tens (at least none of them were reveals that were really unexpected), and I expect a couple more to fall in the next set.

Iโm perfectly fine with this top 20. Iโll admit I underranked my #50 And #62, but I had no idea this many people liked my #87.

1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 26, 30, 31, 34, 37, 40, 43, 58, 61, 63, 66, and 81 are left for me.
I knew "In Your Room" would leave before "Eternal Flame" but I genuinely prefer the former to the latter.
I'd personally prefer to have something in my top 20 win, but I'll be okay with anything in or near my top half.
I do believe that "So Alive", "Lovesong", "Buffalo Stance", and "The Promise" are living on borrowed time, though.

This list keeps getting worse and worse. Guns N' Roses out before Cher and that Bust a Move crap is a complete travesty to music history. If this rankdown had been done around the 2000s when Post Grunge and Popunk ruled the world, I would still have my Glam Metal top 10 intact.

Despite losing a couple top 20s, this was a good reveal overall 30. Every Little Step (71): I thought this was gonna be my 2nd highest ranked BB song, but I ended up liking OOO a bit more. Neither was ever a top half candidate, though, as both types of songs are just not my cup of tea. 29. Right Here Waiting (17): This was Richard's biggest hit and one of the biggest hits of the year back home. It was also a personal 2-week chart-topper and one of my favorite songs of the year. I still like the melody, music, and vocals quite a bit. I'm glad this classic ballad made it this far in this RD :) 28. Secret Rendezvous (70): My favorite Karyn's song this year -although not my favorite ever. I was not too familiar with this tune, though, as I may have heard it only a couple of times before this RD. Lack of familiarity likely affected my ranking of it, so I'm not mad about this reaching the top 30. 27. Real Love (61): I've heard this song more than SR, but it's not in my top 5 JW songs... 26. In Your Room (57): This song was a minor hit back home, and a personal #2, although with no much longevity. I like the more classic rock type of sound, with guitars and percussions. I appreciate the idea of the last seconds of the song, but I don't like the execution. 25. The Living Years (14): This didn't make a dent in radio stations back home in 1989, but once I heard it in 1990 or 91 I became a big fan. I love the vocals (Paul's and the choir's), lyrics, production --how it goes from subdued and tender, to that uplifting chorus. A solid inspirational song. Very happy to see it this high. 24. Paradise City (35): I wasn't a big fan of this song back in the day (it didn't make my personal chart), but I've grown to like it better with time, appreciating the vocal and musical dynamics throughout the song. 23. Welcome to the Jungle (42): This reached my personal top 15. I was a bit torn in terms of the harder rock sound (not too much into it) and the melody and dynamics of the song (which I did like). I've grown to like the song much better with time. 22. If I Could Turn Back Time (31): A personal top 10, despite not being a big hit back home. I still like its melodic pop-rock vibe, and of course Cher's attitude --and that video of her 'revealing' dress beside her son playing the guitar 21. Bust A Move (72): AND I finally cleared my bottom 45 Not a bad song, it's just that I like the other songs much more, and I'm less familiar with it, as this wasn't a song played back home that year, and I've only heard it a couple of times... I'm not mad at it being #21, though. I have left: 7 top 10s (yay!!) + 10 songs in my 11-25 range 27, 40, 55 Well, after several high losses earlier on, this is looking much better! I had troubles charting my #40 (I ranked it in my top 20 at some point) and #55 (made my top 40 at some point), so I'm not really upset at their making top 20.

Time to share other hits in my personal chart that didn't make the yearend Hot 100 --this time with comebacks (and sort of comebacks) from classic acts... - The Rumor (Olivia Newton-John): After she flopped with Soul Kiss in 1985, she returned to the top 10 of radio stations back home -and music video shows- with this song penned by Elton John (who also provides clear background vocals, in addition to playing the piano). This song made it to #2 in my personal chart in December 1988 but kept playing around in early 1989. I really liked the more classical pop melody of this song, with the typical Olivia lead and background vocals -and how she looked having fun and being sexy and playful in her own way in the video. As a long-standing fan of ONJ, I was very happy to witness this comeback back home (despite it practically flopping in the US :( ). I can say this song has aged very well to me. - One (Bee Gees): It was so good to see the acts behind my favorite soundtracks having comebacks within a year. First, ONJ, and then the Bee Gees! This was a minor hit back home, but it reached the top of my personal chart. (To be honest, when I heard She Drives Me Crazy I thought that BGs should have recorded that song, and after its success I hoped BGs would come back :) ). I still like the timeless melody and dance pop vibe, although a bit less than in 1989. - Mixed Emotions (The Rolling Stones): Another classic group that came back this year was of course TRS. A very minor hit back home, this song still made my personal top 5, as I liked its more classical, traditional rock sound, plus I just liked hearing a new song from them. I have to admit that this hasn't aged that well to me, though. Not that I dislike it, just that with no 'comeback' hype it's just too simple of a song for them. - Handle with Care (Traveling Wilburys): This belongs to the "sort of" comeback category, as it meant a return to the charts for long absentees ELO's Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison, whereas more of a continuation of chart presence for Tom Petty and George Harrison. In any case, this was a GREAT song from likely the first Supergroup in history. This song kind of blended the styles of everyone involved, with great melody, vocals, instrumentation, and lyrics. It was a mid-size hit back home, and a personal top 5 in March 1989. A timeless song that IMO still sounds as good and classic as back them, plus it's so good to hear so many good artists in one song... - Heading for the Light (Traveling Wilburys): Their second single back home wasn't as popular as HWC, but it also made my personal top 5. In this case the vocals were by Jeff and George and the influence was more clearly theirs (it could've been a song in the Cloud 9 album). Still it was great to see Jeff being front and center in another hit. - You Got It (Roy Orbison): After a couple of hits with TW, it was amazing to see Roy releasing such a strong, timeless single that fit nicely in the pop charts back then. That amazing voice backed by a classic but epic production, with big drums, strong background vocals, and classic guitars. It was a minor hit back home, and a personal top 10. However, with time I've grown to like it even more, and it would've certainly made my top 30 in this RD. (It's become a personal karaoke tune, too ) - I Drove All Night (Cyndi Lauper): Although she managed to get a hit back home -and in my personal chart- in 1988 with Hole in my Heart, that was just a song for her movie Vibes. This was the debut single of her new album A Night To Remember --and a great one IMO, that emphasized her rocker side, while also highlighting further maturity in her singing and attitude. The song was a mid-size hit back home (in radio and TV) and a personal top 5 that would've been in my top 50 in this RD. (by the way, it was her last top 10 in the Hot 100). To me, this is the definite version of the song. I do like Roy Orbison's version a lot but I prefer Cyndi's (he recorded vocals in 1987 but his single was only released in 1992 after Jeff Lynne produced it for his posthumous album King of Hearts). I like Roy's version more than Celine's, too... - The Different Story (Peter Schilling): This was another great comeback of an 80s artist. He had already a classic 1980s song with Major Tom, and a strong hit with Noah's Arc, but I think this comeback was even better. A hit back home, and a BIG hit in my personal chart, reaching the top and making it to my yearend top 20. I love everything about it, from the epic intro, to the synth pop sound and production, the use of flute sounds, the epic background vocals, the post-chorus, etc, etc. Interestingly, this song was produced by Enigma's creator Michael Cretu. A classic that would've likely been fighting for a spot in the top 10 had it been included in this RD. - I'm Never Gonna Change (Jose Feliciano): I happily charted Latin star Jose Feliciano for the first time in my English chart with this song. He had already had several hits in Spanish in the 1980s, primarily with ballads, but this was a comeback for the English-speaking market, with a production that resembled Rick Astley's hits. This was a minor hit back home and a #3 hit in my personal chart. To be honest, I hadn't heard this in 20+ years, but it was a nice trip down memory lane, especially after hearing him so many times with Feliz Navidad earlier this week :)

Some older songs made their appearance in 1989 as covers, re-releases or late releases, and made my weekly personal top 10: - Paint It Black (The Rolling Stones): Tour of Duty was a TV series about the Vietnam War that was aired as "Nam" in one of our main TV stations at primetime in 1989. PIB was the opening credit song, and just like what happened with Del Shannon's Runaway earlier in the decade, radio stations latched on PIB and made it a hit again, or simply a hit for younger generations (ie people like me ). This was a personal chart-topper - Bizarre Love Triangle (New Order): This was an interesting case of a LONG song becoming a BIG hit back home. Radio stations rarely played the short version. The extended mix below was THE version we heard the most (although sometimes cut at around 5:00), and despite its length it made it to the top of radio stations --and the top of my personal chart, plus making it to my yearend top 10 and one of my all-time 1980s favorites. - Blue Monday 1988 (New Order): Following the success of BLT, this song became another hit by New Order back home (where, for whatever reason, this song was referred to as The Cavalcade). BM88 peaked at #3 in my personal chart and has remained another 1980s classic. - Send Me An Angel 89 (Real Life): This was a minor hit back home and made it to my personal top 5 --but with time this version has turned into a 1980s classic, which would've been in my top 20 of this year. I love the updated, stronger production of this version over the original, including the drumbeat, guitar and the mixing of multiple vocals. Plus this new wave sound is one of my favorite off the 1980s. - You Ain't See Nothing Yet (Figures on a Beach):A hit back home, and a personal top 10. I liked this modernized version of the Bachman Turner Overdrive classic. I even found it a bit less grating than the original-although that guitar breakdown in the bridge was unnecessary. - Help (Bananarama): For what it's worth, I think they did a pretty good job with such a classic. The more modern sound and the subtle harmonies worked. This sort of belongs to the redundant cover categories, but at least it was done with a charity purpose. It was a minor hit back home and scrapped the top 10 in my personal chart. - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (Jimmy Sommerville): Just like The Communards did with Don't Leave Me This Way and Never Can Say Goodbye, its vocalist did a very good job covering Sylvester's classic, giving it a new 1980s Europop feel to it. I love his soaring vocals as usual, as well as that fun bridge. It was a minor hit back home and another song that scrapped my top 10.

#64
She Wants To Dance With Me Rick Astley
Total Points: 1124
Billboard Hot 100: 6
Billboard Top 100 of 1989: 88
From: Hold Me in Your Arms
Written solely by Astley (his first hit as a writer), this peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late February of 1989. It was his final Top 10 hit in the US. Mmmm, actually, he would score his final Top 10 a couple of years later with Cry For Help, although with a new image (AC sound, longer hair) "Cry For Help" is, by far, my favorite Rick Astley song.

This was my very first cassette single. My first cassette album was Storm Front by Billy Joel, and my first 7" vinyl single was "I'm Still Standing" by Elton John, as some of you already know. My first CD album was the self-titled album (a.k.a. the "wedding" album) by Duran Duran, and my first CD single was "1, 2, 3, 4 (Sumpin' New)" by Coolio. As you can tell, I like a variety of music.

Not even in the same galaxy as her iconic and impactful material from the latter half of the 70s, but this is still one of the better SAW singles. The album is good too if you go in knowing what to expect.

This and When In Rome making it into this region are the biggest overall surprises. Didnโt know that they were so liked.

Earlier than I thought, but finally! I hate this and always have. Similar to Walk Like An Egyptian, there's over two decades of disliking this that has built up. The Shakira remake as well.

WHOA @ "Straight Up" going out before the top ten. I'm not complaining, really, but that's surprising. "Buffalo Stance" making the top ten is a pleasant surprise. 1 | 2 | 3 | 9 | 10 | 12 | 15 | 19 | 21 | 22 This turned out okay.
