Wow... Flawless Top 10. I can't believe When In Rome and Neneh Cherry went this far. A little surprised by the early exit of The B-52's, but expected (I also prefer Roam and Deadbeat Club to Love Shack from the Cosmic Thing album).

Very surprised that Cherish got as high as it did, and that LTYH is the first Roxette song out. My 80 and 71 can go ASAP, but the others I'm all great with.

There's also some more left-field songs going top 10. Love Song, Stand, and Buffalo Stance are all contenders.

"Roam" is good. My favorite B-52's song, though, is "Good Stuff."

Unlike some of you, I had faith in "The Promise". It's a smooth, highly melodic, not too out of the ordinary, upbeat, critically beloved synth-pop song in a major key that still gets heaps of re-current play. No, the song I really thought I was taking a risk ranking top 10 and which no one has pointed out, is "Sowing the Seeds of Love". I know Tears For Fears performed amazingly in 1985, but with the stylistic shift towards an extended "I Am The Walrus" homage (sporting a chorus some might find repetitious), and the fact that it doesn't receive nearly as much attention as their prior hits in the present day, I didn't know if they could replicate the feat.
Also, hooray to Janet finally getting an 80s rankdown Top 10!
I have my top 4 intact, 6 top 10s overall, and only 1 song outside my top 20 (which is only my #22 anyway). This year was so easy, even Pulse got it right, lol. I can't really be unhappy with any result from here on out, but I do hope we aren't headed towards a "Smooth Criminal" vs. "Express Yourself"--or all-Madonna--finale (though a "Like a Prayer" win would be perfectly fine).
On a side-note, "Straight Up" was only 7 points behind "Cherish"...wow, that's close, and very intriguing. Now I'm deeply curious to see how many points #10 has. If my spontaneous edit that just as easily could've not happened at all was the reason Paula missed the top 10, I will be shook to my core.

WHAT! @ Straight Up missing the top ten. Fully expected Pallah to place as low as no. 2 and as high as no. 1. Double WHAT! @ my no. 1 still kicking. (If you know me, you knew what it was all along.) I could cry!
I...didnβt know the Tears for Fears song was so popular?

Now is where I'd take the time to complain about my #1 going, but top 20 is further than I expected, honestly.
This top 10's great too, all of these are in my top 25. I'd prefer for my #25 not to win (it's the only song remaining I rated below a 3.5/5), though. Pleasantly surprised "Sowing the Seeds of Love" and "Buffalo Stance" made it this far, thought they'd be out between 11-20 at most.

After the reveal, I'm as shocked as anyone that Paula Abdul didn't make the top 10. Less surprised by Love Shack (it's the male voice, right?).
Among more pleasant surprises, count me second in Sowing the Seeds of Love. This would probably get tanked if it was a rock rankdown due to overlength, d'ya know what I mean? I thought this would have peaked around 30 or so and The Cure's Love Song somewhere in the top 20. Then again, This Promise has shocked me with its endurance. Top 10? OK!

1, 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 31, 35, 58, 63 I under-ranked my 58 and definitely my 63.
I'll be surprised if top 2 aren't "Like a Prayer" and "Smooth Criminal". I'm expecting "The Look" to be the first out in the top 10 as well.

Posting 11-40 this new year's day. Most of these are Hi-NRG or Freestyle with no official videos, so I'll just post a link for those who want to check em out. 31. Winger - Headed For a Heartbreak (HOT 100 #19) ( US Mainstream Rock chart #8) (DOC #4)Third single off their debut album. Voted one of the best Glam Rock Powerballads of all time. 32. Fancy - Bodyguard (Maxi Extended) (DOC #2)Track 5 on Fancy's "Flames Of Love" album, and the b-side to the "Flames Of Love" 12 inch single. That single cost me 42 dollars when I finally purchased it in the 2000's. 33. Rick Astley - She Wants To Dance With Me (HOT 100 #6) (DOC #5) 34. Bobby Brown - Every Little Step (HOT 100 #3) (DOC #3)35. Stage Dolls - Love Cries (HOT 100 #46) (DOC #3)Norwegian Hard Rock band scored big with their 3rd studio album. The MV is very similar to Kix "Don't Close Your Eyes" in lighting, and the song also deals with suicide theme. 36. Johnny O - Highways Of Love (DOC #4)Second single released off Johnny O's debut album. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yuroAVAOBY
37. Vanessa - Just A Game (DOC #3)Off the Italian Hi-NRG label Time Records. Huge hit on Hi- NRG dance charts. The style? Sabrina " Boys (Summertime Love)" ,and Vocals by Clara Moroni. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeMl6kEy4KY
38. Stevie B. - I Wanna Be The One (HOT 100 #32) (DOC #2) / Stevie B. Girl I Am Searchin' (HOT 100 #56) (DOC #2)www.youtube.com/watch?v=IlL8Hi8coJEAnother double chart I gave two Stevie B. songs. 39. Noel - City Streets (DOC #4) 4rth track I charted off his 1987 debut album. This was played on a freestyle station I used to listen to all the time. www.youtube.com/watch?v=crQrOWRjwUA

Strong (if not surprising) top ten overall, but βStraight Upβ was robbed. Wasnβt expecting to see that one until we hit top 5.

20. Love Shack (6): This was crowned as the song of the year back home. It was also a multi-week personal chart-topper and in my personal yearend top 10. They had already a few classics back home like Party Out of Bounds, Private Idaho, and Rock Lobster, so it was great to learn about their comeback in 1989 --and see they had such good songs in store. This is just pure pop fun, including catchy melodies, solid harmonies and funky instrumentation. Still my favorite off Cosmic Thing -although my 4th favorite off B-52s.
19. This Time I Know It's For Real (20): A hit back home, and a personal chart-topper (although not her last one as she'd return to the top with I Will Go With You). One of my favorite SAW-produced songs. Super catchy, with an almost epic instrumentation, and of course Donna's powerful and connecting vocals. SOOO happy to see this making the top 20!
18. So Alive (40): I really like the new wave music and production, including backing vocals. I think the melody could've been a bit stronger, as it's primarily reliant on the chorus, which was the main reason it fell from my top 20 to #40 in this RD--but otherwise a strong song.
17. Cold Hearted (10): This was Paula's first personal chart-topper and her first and biggest radio hit back home. I love its sexiness, the multiple elements of the song, including the strings in the bridge, the co-co-co-cold hearted SSSsnake.
16. Toy Soldiers (22): This was a big hit back home, and a personal chart-topper. I still like the melody, production, and lyrics, but Martika's howling in the last minute made me rank this outside the top 20.
15. My Prerogative (23): My favorite Bobby Brown song by far, with stronger pop melody and production. It was barely played back home, and barely made my personal chart, but I soon grew to like it quite a bit.
14. Eternal Flame (13): Another big hit from The Bangles back home, and their 3rd personal chart-topper. One of my favorite ballads of the second half of the 80s. I really like the vocals and harmonies, as well as the production going from subdued tenderness to epic despair. A classic ballad that is one of their strongest songs by far (I have a hard time to choose amongst my favorite Bangles songs).
13. Straight Up (15): Awww. I hoped she could have one song in the top 10. This is a pretty good pop song that still sounds as good as it did back then.
12. Listen to your Heart (3): An epic pop-rock ballad that, IMO, alongside Alone are the best representatives of this sub-genre. Excellent production, great vocals and harmonies, and instrumentation. This was a big hit back home and their 4th personal chart-topper in a row, in what was one of the most successful album eras in my personal chart. The fact that a cover of it became a hit over 10 years later was another example of its strength. Wish it had made it to top 10 in this RD, but I guess leaving at #12 is better than expected..
11. Cherish (27): This was another hit for M back home, although not as big as LAP or EY. It was a #2 in my personal chart, and a song that I still like (especially the album version), but I've ranked it in my 25-30 range of Madonna songs. In any case, it's a solid, tender, well-sung and well-produced downtempo.

Now I'd like to share a few songs from artists that just appeared in the last reveal, including non-US singles, as well as couple other non-singles: - Paint (Roxette): Following the success of The Look, this was promoted only by our 3rd popular radio station back home as the second single. I loved the more pop, new wave type of sound of this song, with more subdued vocals and harmonies, as well as the show-stopping solo vocals from Marie after the bridge. This was their second song to top my personal chart, and one of my favorites off Look Sharp! It would've made my top 40 in this RD. - Dressed for Success (Roxette): This was Roxette's next big hit (played by all pop stations) back home, and their third personal chart-topper. Simple, guitar-based pop song with very catchy melody and (of course) solid vocals. Another timeless Roxette tune. - 'Til Death Do Us Part (Madonna): This was promoted only by our #1 pop radio station after Express Yourself. It peaked at the 5th highest spot of their chart... I was ecstatic to learn that this was the next single, clueless about it being only a single for our local radio station I had received the cassette of LAP as a birthday present in August 1989 and this quickly became my second favorite track. This became her 3rd personal chart-topper in a row, and more successful than EY. It actually made my yearend top 5 and has remained as my favorite non-single song by Madonna. I like everything about it. The music, beat, production, her vocals (including the talk-singing), the poignant lyrics, etc. - You and I Part II (Fleetwood Mac): They had reached the top 3 of my personal chart with Big Love, Little Lies, Everywhere, Family Man, and Seven Wonders. Only the first two were big hits back home and the other 3 just minor hits in a not-so-popular pop station. That same pop station decided to play You and I Part II next, and this was followed by our main AC station. This was my mom's favorite song from TITN, while I liked that keyboard sound in the chorus and the bridge that just brought a smile in my face :) This made my personal top 10. - Caroline (Fleetwood Mac): As I shared before, I loved Tango In the Night, and I played that cassette many many times, so I charted this as the next single. I really liked the production here, the drum, synth, vocals... It was their 6th personal top 5. And now some Extras with hits made in France: - Monte Cristo (Indochine): Following their HUGE chart success in 1988, a couple of radio stations played this one as the follow-up to Leila -the pre-88 song that reached the top of the charts in 1988. MC became a mid-size hit and another top 3 in my personal chart, as I really liked the different beat they used for this single. - Hors La Loi (Indochine): This one was even more popular as it was played by our #1 pop station, reaching their weekly top 5 --and my personal top 5, as I liked the pure, bubbly pop sound here (although I admit I'm less fond of it now) - A L'Est de Java (Indochine): This followed Monte Cristo as a single in the same two pop stations. I liked the moodier, darker, nostalgic sound, including the typical fusion Indochine sound mixed with horns. - Voyage Voyage (Desireless): This was a mid-size hit back home, in a way following the steps of Indochine (although a couple of years later a Mexican boy band would release a 'reductive' cover in Spanish that would become even more popular than the original and one of the biggest of the year ). In any case, I LOVED this song since I heard it. It was the first song in many years to debut in my top 10, and was a multi-week chart-topper. It had that pure, elegant, mysterious and energetic synth pop sound that I really liked, plus great vocals. Surely in my top 10 of songs released in 1989. - BambolΓ©o (Gipsy Kings): This was their breakout global hit, recorded in 1987, released internationally in 1988, and turned into a HUGE global hit in 1989, and likely one of the most famous flamenco songs ever. This was a big hit back home, and a song that topped my personal Latin chart (Although born in France, the roots of the member families are in Catalonia, Spain.) - La Lambada (Kaoma): French-Brazilian group Kaoma scored a HUGE global hit starting in 1989 that went into 1990 and beyond (as J-Lo can attest). The title comes from the name of a VERY SEXY Brazilian dance and rhythm that is illustrated in the song's video (this would make for fun but sometimes uncomfortable dance proposals at parties back home, but I digress ). The song was a big hit back home in November-December 1989 and further into early 1990 as it was perfect for our Summer season. And it was a multi-week #1 in my personal Latin chart as well. This song made the Lambada genre popular as well, opening the door for several songs with that rhythm to become hits in the following 2-3 years. In addition, all South Americans were pretty astonished and proud of the success of this song, as it was based on a traditional, popular, and revered Andean song of the early 1980s in the Saya genre called Llorando Se Fue, by Bolivian folk-group Los Kjarkas. Of course, this melody would become popular again in the 2000s thanks to J-Lo's On The Floor.

Man, people like The Look THIS much?
Though not surprising, all of the left field tracks being booted out promptly wasnβt nice to see. Here for Madonna or either Jackson taking this only.
