Theeeeere's "Funky Cold Medina". Expected that shoe to drop in the previous set.
Amazed one song, in particular, made the top half...but I'm not disappointed.

Now that the Alt 1997 RD is over, I can move to commenting on this RD :) Let's catch up!! 100. Shower Me With Your Love (100): This was a first listen --and a last listen lol. Clear #100 to me. 99. Girl I'm Gonna Miss You (84): Back in 1989 this was me. It made my personal top 5, especially because popularity made me like it a bit more --but it has aged really bad. 98. I'll Be Loving You (36): Unashamedly the top ranker of this one :) I admit that I was a BIG fan of NKOTB, like watching videos, buying cassettes, having posters in my room, daydreaming about meeting them, etc. I used and abused the Hangin' Tough and Step by Step cassettes. I've always liked the 1960s ballad vibe and melody of this song. It was a personal chart-topper as well. Not surprised to see this leaving this early, but I just hoped it could escape bottom 5. 97. When The Children Cry (74): This was a minor hit back home. I liked the melody enough, but HATED the vocals, and wasn't a big fan of the guitar instrumentation. I gave it a few bonus points for nostalgia 96. Surrender to Me (78): The song is far too bland and simple, and I was almost going to rank it in my bottom 10, but I gave it extra points for the vocals and harmonies. This wasn't played back home in 1989, and I only learned about it thanks to Casey's Countdown in the late 90s. 95. After All (89): This and StY were practically tied in my RD. But there is no comparison in terms of vocals. Even though I like Peter Cetera, his voice and Cher's didn't mesh that well. 94. Baby Don't Forget My Number (65): At least the first two MV songs are the correct ones to leave :) although this one wasn't bottom 10 material, I can understand the whole stance against the fakest artist ever This was a hit back home and a personal top 3. 93. Cover Girl (33): Of course, another top 40 loss associated with NKOTB! This is a solid, fun pure pop song. This was their biggest hit of this era back home, a personal #2, and a song that has aged pretty well with me -still in my iPhone :) 92. Thinking of You (97): Good vocals and lyrics could not compensate the underwhelming melody and instrumentation of this one. Clear bottom 5 for me. 91. All This Time (88): This one wasn't really played in our radio stations back home. We were much more into her dance songs. It didn't make my personal chart... it's just too much of a simple song for me (in the same boat as After All or StM). 90. Baby, I Love You Way/Freebird (41): A #1 back home and in my personal chart. I thought this was a good reinvention of two classics. I actually like these songs more as AC than classic rock 89. Hangin' Tough (67): A hit back home (although with a version that didn't have the piano bridge). I liked the different vibe of the original, which made me take it to #2 in my personal chart... but I've become less of a fan with time. I hope their other song doesn't appear soon... 88. Blame It On The Rain (51): OK. I'm fine with the order of MV songs leaving, but this one shouldn't have left in the bottom 15. A hit back home and a personal #2, that I still like. 87. When I'm With You (77): I do like cheese, but this has a bit more than my preferred dose. Pretty good vocals, but melody is just a bit too early-80s cheese. This was barely heard back home that year, and didn't make my personal chart. 86. I Wanna Have Some Fun (58): Third Fox song I did like and made my personal top 10 despite not being a hit back home.

85. Look Away (45): This was barely played back home. I was VERY surprised when I learned that this was the #1 song of 1989 in the Billboard Hot 100. Like WTF? This is not in my top 5 Chicago songs, but it wasn't thaaaat bad either. 84. Miss You Like Crazy (62): I didn't care for this one back in 1989, as I wasn't into this type of ballads. However, I've come to like this much better with time, and now I appreciate the melody and vocals. When is Bobby Brown going to come, by the way? At least his ballads are crappier than several ballads that have already left... 83. I Like It (96): This was a first listen that didn't do much for me. 82. My Heart Can't Tell You No (46): Huh? This is a really solid pop-rock ballad from Rod, with great melody and music throughout the song, and of course strong vocals from Rod. I can understand the hatred toward NKOTB, MV, Chicago, even the Will To Power cover, but Rod? really? 81. Rock On (94): I might've heard this a couple times before, but it wasn't a song that was played in 1989 back home. It's a worthless cover IMO and clear bottom 10 for me. 80. Wind Beneath My Wings (24): My biggest loss so far. I admit that the intro piano and the outro melody give extra cheese. Despite that cheese, I do like vocals, melody, lyrics and overall inspirational vibe of this song, even if it didn't make it to our radio stations or my personal chart back in 1989. Sad to see it leave this early. 79. Heaven (50): And on the other spectrum of ballads, I'm also sad to see this rock ballad leave early. Unlike WBMW, this one was a hit back home, making it to top 5 in main pop radio stations and to the top of my personal chart. I liked the tenderness in the verses and strength in the choruses, and the overall melody and vocals throughout the song. 78. When I See You Smile (75): I've always thought the piano was a bit misleading, as it looks like it's gonna be a more epic rock ballad, but the melody and vocals don't really go anywhere epic . 77. Girl You Know It's True (30): Or more like Girl You Know It's FAKE lol. Despite the controversy, I do like this song. It's my favorite MV song for sure. That intro, the piano sound and harmonies throughout the song, plus the mix of talk-singing in the verses with more melodic choruses, the electronic drum sounds, all work pretty well IMO. It's very representative of 1989 in terms of sound IMO. Second top 30 loss :(( 76. Angel Eyes (99): Like Rock On, I may have heard this song a couple times before, but definitely not in 1989. In any case, it was a clear bottom 5 for me. 75. How Can I Fall (87): I liked this one more back in 1989, although it didn't make my personal chart. Now it feels cheesier, but not the type of cheese I like... 74. Lay Your Hands on Me (85): This has always felt like a try-too-hard-to-be-cool type of song to me. It peaked at #6 in my personal chart primarily because I was a BJ fan back at that time, but it had little longevity. 73. I'll Be There For You (36): This made my personal top 3 and was a mid-size hit back home. Depending on my mood, I like it a lot, or I'm a bit indifferent toward it. I wasn't sure where to rank it in the end, but after tanking LYHOM, I opted for being more lenient :) I do hope we don't see their other song anytime soon. 72. Once Bitten Twice Shy (86): Kinda guilty pleasure back in 1989, but time has progressively reduced the "pleasure" element to it lol. 71. Rock Wit'cha (95): Never heard it back in 1989. It was a first listen -and last listen as I don't care for it at all.

This rank down keeps getting worse and worse. #60. If You Don't Know Me By Now - Simply RedThis song did nothing for me. Truth be told. The only song I loved from this band was "Money's Too Tight (to Mention)" #59. You Got It (The Right Stuff) - New Kids On The BlockMore or less where it should appear. "step By Step" was the jam tho. #58. Walk On Water - Eddie MoneyThis was the last time I charted Eddie Money, but it did make my Ye chart at #97 for the year. Great song. #57. Every Rose Has Its Thorn - PoisonThis is a decent Rock ballad. Not big on my chart, but I did chart almost every other song by the band. "Talk Dirty To Me", "Unskinny Bop" and "Nothing But A Good Time" were all top 3 hits on my charts. #56. What You Don't Know - ExposéAs this band became big on the charts they also lost leverage with the Freestyle crowd. This song was still good, but not classic Freestyle status. #55. Dreamin' - Vanessa WilliamsNot big on ballads in my preteen years unless they featured big hair and big guitars. #54. Funky Cold Medina - Tone LōcFor some reason this is acceptable rap style to my ears. probably because it samples "Christin Sixteen" and "Hot Blooded"? :kii: #53. It's No Crime - BabyfaceI didn't even recall this one? One thing for sure. Pirate radio didn't play this song. #52. Poison - Alice Cooper LOL at all you stinkers. I'm actually surprised it made it this far. Easily my #1 song of that year. Best vocals, best lyrics and best music video. With seven weeks at #1 nothing even came close. "Heaven" had 5 and another NRG song, you guys have never heard had 3. So close to Top 50 too. You bottom tankers can bite me. #51. Waiting For A Star To Fall - Boy Meets Girl This one sounded alright among this list of songs, but not a '45 I would go out searching for.

I was listening to the Samantha Fox song again. It really was a good year or two ahead of it's time. If you played that song for me and made me guess the year, I would've said 91/92 since it has a lot of elements of the big hits from those years.

so...UNPOPULAR OPINION...Milli Vanilli gets a bum rap...everybody screams "FAKE!" but there were real musicians who performed this music, just because the guys in the videos aren't amongst them shouldn't discount the true musicians efforts...BLAME IT ON THE LABEL (not the music)
that being said, most of their songs were crappy anyway...although i did have some guilty pleasure from GYKIT & BIOTR

70. I Remember Holding You (83): This was a first listen and I kinda liked it but couldn't rank it higher with so many other good and better known songs. I admit I slightly under-ranked it, though. 69. Soldier Of Love (73): I had forgotten about this song (It wasn't really played back home). It's a catchy, well-sung, melodic song. This was definitely a surprising comeback. 68. Close My Eyes Forever (80): Another big rock ballad duet for this year, that I wasn't sure where to finally rank. Just like StM and AA, this wasn't played back home in 1989, and I heard it first in Casey's Countdown in the late 90s. I like the lyrics, vibe, a bit of the melody and vocals (Ann's is better than Lita's), but the song was just not as strong as others this year to me. 67. Roni (98): Another first listen and a clear bottom 5 for me. My least liked Bobby Brown song this year. Finally cleared my bottom 8 --about time! 66. Lost In Your Eyes (9): WHAAATTT?!!! As I shared in my initial prediction post, I was afraid that far too many Pulsers would tank this type of piano ballad, but I was hoping that this would at least make the top half. This is quite disappointing LIYE was a BIG hit back home, actually one of the top songs of the year, and it was a personal chart-topper and among my personal favorites of the year. I still like it quite a lot. The vocals, melody, instrumentation, even the lyrics work for this. Plus, again, remarkable feat of a young singer-songwriter-producer hit. 65. Born To Be My Baby (2): WHAAATTT THE F*CK??!!!! Back-to-back top 10 losses for me in this reveal. This was a hit back home (maybe as popular as Bad Medicine), and a personal chart-topper, that became not only my favorite hit this era, but also has become one of my BJ and 80s favorites (and a favorite karaoke tune). After some good performances for BJ in previous RDs, I'm shocked that this one left below the top 50. What's going on?!! There are several other rock songs that could've left earlier. Puzzled 64. She Wants To Dance With Me (53): Another personal top 3 from RA, and a minor hit back home. A bit surprisingly, this song has aged well. 63. Heaven Help Me (93): This was a first listen. Lack of familiarity and uniqueness of this song definitely affected my ranking. I don't dislike it --I just feel it's unremarkable. 62. Don't Wanna Lose You (37): Well, I'll always give extra points to Gloria, as the first Latina mega star. Plus, this was a nice ballad that still sounds good. A personal top 3 and a hit back home. I wish it had been a bit higher, but it could also have been lower, so I'm not fully disappointed. 61. Second Chance (29): My 4th top 30 loss so far, and another surprise. This is a ballad with great melody, vocals and lyrics, and a sound that is simply timeless. Should've at least made it to the top half

Tfw what would’ve been two of my top 5 (including my #1) are the last two songs to miss the top half.

60. If You Don't Know Me By Now (63): This was the type of ballad I didn't chart back in the late 1980s. Peruvian radios wouldn't play this style either. I've grown to like this more with time, though. I like it more than HBTY. A couple more years later, Simply Red would start a HUGE era in my personal chart, though... 59. You Got It (The Right Stuff) (28): My favorite song of this album . I think it has the best sound, production, vocals, melody. It was a minor hit back home, and a personal chart-topper. I guess it's good that it escaped bottom 40 at least. 58. Walk on Water (8): Huh?!! Oh, geez!!! First Bon Jovi, now Eddie Money. All these strong melodic pop-rock songs leaving the RD this early is This wasn't that popular back home, but I liked it quite a bit and took it to my personal top 5. Interestingly, the song progressively became a classic. I remember going to parties in 1991 and 92 and listening to this one as one of those timeless classics (alongside Inxs, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi). It's become sort of a 1980s staple back home, and my favorite EM song for sure. It doesn't make sense for this to leave in the bottom half 57. Every Rose Has Its Thorn (44): Their second big hit back home and second personal chart-topper. I'm not as big of a fan as I was in 1989 (I'm a bigger fan of their other chart-topper Fallen Angel), but this is still a good rock ballad. 56. What You Don't Know (54): This was my favorite first listen in this RD. I liked other popular hits from them (CGWM, PONR, SC, INGOY), and this one is not different. Cool dance vibe with some edge to it and pretty good vocals. Very nice discovery. 55. Dreamin' (90): This wasn't played back home either, so it was another song I discovered in the late 90s. It's always been just okay to me. 54. Funky Called Medina (47): This sounded original, unique, cool, with all the rock samples and Hip Hop vibe, plus it was a fun song. I like it much more than Wild Thing. And btw, I don't have problem with the lyrics. 53. It's No Crime (74): I heard this for the first time earlier this year (thanks to the NJS RD), and I've grown to like it a bit more. Maybe next RD I could rank it even higher 52. Poison (59): This was another great discovery in this RD. I believe that if I had been more familiar with it, I could've ranked it higher. Pretty good, strong but melodic, with good rock vocals, and a much more interesting structure and sound than the typical rock song. 51. Waiting For a Star to Fall (12): A personal chart-topper. I LOVE the melody, including the instruments used throughout the song (give me that sax!! and that keyboard!!), and the good harmonies. A very solid pop song. This was barely played in radio stations, but I loved it since I first heard it and turned it into a personal hit. Why is this leaving so early, though? Seriously, how come a song lacking all sense of melody like Batdance can be higher than a super melodic song? Really?

She Wants To Dance With Me Rick Astley
Total Points: 1124
Billboard Hot 100: 6
Billboard Top 100 of 1989: 88
From: Hold Me in Your Arms
Written solely by Astley (his first hit as a writer), this peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late February of 1989. It was his final Top 10 hit in the US. Mmmm, actually, he would score his final Top 10 a couple of years later with Cry For Help, although with a new image (AC sound, longer hair)

Most of these already showed up, so I guess I can reveal them too. Consider my own top 100 the extras of 1989. 90. Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon (Billboard HOT 100 #15) (DOC #12)The Canadian based Hi-NRG/Electronica band scored their biggest hit with this song. It samples no less than five songs. This info is straight from Wkipedia. "I Beg Your Pardon" was inspired in part by both the Pet Shop Boys hit single "Always on My Mind" and an increasingly prevalent use of sampling by artists such as Public Enemy, M/A/R/R/S and Coldcut. The track sampled Lynn Anderson's 1971 hit "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden", Silver Convention's 1976 hit "Get Up and Boogie (That's Right)", GQ's "Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)", Tones on Tail's "Go!", Spagna's "Call Me", National Lampoon's "Disco Hotline" sketch from their That's Not Funny, That's Sick album, and the opening bars from the theme music from The Magnificent Seven (which was also well known as the theme to a commercial for Marlboro cigarettes in the 1960s). How's that for Sampleing -mania? I mostly liked the New Order like vocals and hi-NRG synths between verses. 89. New Order - Round & Round (HOT 100 #64) (Billboard U.S. Dance #1) (DOC #12)Up next on my 1989 top 100 was in fact New Order. Round and Round also peaked at #12 on my weekly charts. Much better than it did on Billboard's HOT 100. 88. The Outfield - My Paradise (HOT 100 #72) (DOC #9)At #88 I charted a song by The Outfield off their 1989 album "Voices of Babylon". Everyone remembers the band for their hits "Your Love", and "Say It Isn't So". My Paradise was a mash up of both songs. Very uptempo Powerpop that I couldn't resist giving them one last shot at the top 10. 87. Lady D. - I'm Your's Tonight (DOC #12)Up next is some of that obscure Hi-NRG music you probably never heard of. As it goes Lady D was supposed to be one half of The New Wave/NRG duo Trans-X, but as we all know the female side of Trans-X was Laurie Ann Gill. However throughout the years, the female side of Tranx-X has been done by different vocalists. One of them was Denise Languirand . She performed the live Trans-X shows during 1987-1990 and eventually became Pasqual's wife. Hence Lady D. was born. The style of "I'm Your's Tonight" is very much like a Trans-X and since "Living On Video" is one of my favorite NRG songs ever, this song now resides in my 12 inch collection. as well. 86. Britny Fox - Girl School (HOT 100 #81) (DOC #10)Britny Fox is an American Glam Metal band who broke out at the height of the genre. Back then Billboard was an actual magazine that I used to view at the super market. Instead of Marvel comics I was flipping through to the HOT 100. I would scroll down and single out band names that sounded like Rock bands. I also had cable which meant late nights on MTV waiting for them to play this MV. 85. (a song that hasn't shown up yet) (HOT 100#1) (DOC #11) 84. Alice Cooper - Bed Of Nails (UK singles Chart #38) (DOC #10)Since you guys already my #1 song of 1989, you had to have guessed I charted more Alice Cooper throughout 98-91. "Bed Of Nails was the forgotten single released in between "Poison" and "House Of Fire", but it did reach top 40 in the U.K. and had a very cool leather and chains Music video to go along. Tell me you don't hear a Bon Jovi song in the chorus? 83. Donny Osmond - Soldier Of Love (HOT 100#2) (DOC #12)Here is a dance pop song we already ran into. It was the big comeback hit for Donny Osmond. The interrsting story about this single is that it was originally promoted with the "mystery artist" attached to it. Once the song was accepted by the public, it came out that it was former child star Donny Osmond . This promotional move also eventually got him a record deal with Capitol. image hosting for ebay82. (TRD 1070) Chester - Don't Get Away (DOC #8)Italo Disco was poular in Europe during the mid 80's, but one label rose to popularity through the Japanese need for fast melodic Hi -NRG music. The label was Time records. It originated in Italy and it's rostre was made of many acts, with one thing in comon. Most were sung by the song's producers and writers. Chester was one of the many aliases sung under Mauro Farina. This song has elements of Dead Or Alive style with the popular use of synths that sounded like trumpets. Never a dull day when these songs play. 81. Bon Jovi - I'll Be There For You (HOT 100 #1) (DOC #9)Going from dance Pop to Hi-NRG to Glam is the norm on my 1989 charts. Here is the #1 Bon Jovi Ballad that turned "New Jersey" into Bon Jovi's biggest album to date. 80. Eighth Wonder - Baby Baby (HOT 100 #84) (DOC #13)Moving right along we run into the Britsh popdance band Eighth Wonder. Tho both Kylie and this band were from England the U.S. warmed up quicker to Kylie. I thought both acts were equally bouncy and Poppy and I especially loved Patsy Kinset's vocals. They had that perfect high range for NRGetic songs like this, and if you blink you miss her very cute rap lines.. 79. Raiana Paige - Open Up Your Heart (DOC #8)Raiana was jumping on the Freestyle dance train in late 1989. With her infectious Latin fire beats she was becoming just as popular as Sweet Sensation on the dance charts. She still performs with her bands KHZ and 3388, but her NRG dance style has evolved into a more modern sound. www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6b_5ZjRvNg78. Sweet Sensation - Sincerely Yours (HOT 100 #14) (DOC #8)Speaking of Latin Fire here is Sweet Sensation with the 5th single off their "Take It While It's Hot" album. This was also one of their biggest hots on the HOT 100. 77. Samantha Fox - I Only Wanna Be With You (HOT 100 #31) DOC #8)While the radio was playing the housey "I Wanna have Some Fun", I was more enthralled by The Saw style of "I Only Wanna Be With You'. Much more NRGetic & fun. Those of you with Latin roots will also remember Luis Miguel covering the song as "Ahora Te Puedes Marchar" A very fine song in its own time. upload upload76. Emergency - Bad Love (DOC #6)Up next more first time Latin Hi-NRG listens for you guys. This was on the U.S. based NRG label Chazz records. Not much info, but it is written by Sabby Rayas. The style of this song is very much like Company B.'s "Fascination". very synth oriented with a thrilling Latin bassline that flows with the lead singers perfect NRG vocals. 75. U2 - Angel Of Harlem (HOT 100#14) (DOC #8)at #75 is the second single from "Rattle and Hum". This song always struck the right chords with me. The added brass section really made the pre chorus come alive. thus becoming one of my favorite U2 songs ever. 74. The Cult - Fire Woman (HOT 100 #46) (DOC #8)Moving right along we return to hard rock territory. "Fire Woman" was released the year when I was at my Hair Metal high. I was too young to go to concerts so that same desperation made me love the songs even more. This one also had an Alternative vibe to it, but aside from the vocal style, it sounded much more Hair Metal to me. This was also the only top 10 hit for the band on my chart. 73. Pretty Boy Floyd - Rock & Roll (Is Gonna Set The Night On Fire) (DOC #9)These next three acts are bands that are still going strong in 2018. At the height of Glam Metal, this band got themselves a record deal with MCA after only 8 live shows. Their music style had a sleaze metal vibe sounding like Motley Crue and looking like Poison. This song didn't reach the HOT 100 , but their debut album "Leather Boyz with Electric Toyz" got as high as #130 on Billboard's album charts. The album was produced by Howard Benson who went on to produce albums for some of 2000's biggest Post Grunge bands like Theory of A Deadman, Hinder, Cold, Flyleaf and Daughtry just to name o few. Its no wonder those are some of my favorite bands. This year Pretty Boy Floyd released "Public Enemies" on Frontiers records. The first two singles were huge on my 2018 charts. 72. Ratt - I Want A Woman (HOT 100 #75) (DOC #10)Next is one of my favorite Glam Metal bands of the scene. Stephen Pearcy is now a solo artist on Frontiers Records. "I Want A Woman was the second single off "Reach For The Sky". It reached #75 on the HOT 100. The song became thier 6th top 10 song on my personal charts. The interesting thing is that this song stubbornly held on my #10 spot for 6 weeks. then just fell off the chart. 71. Winger - Hungry (HOT 100 #85) (DOC #11)Winger was one of the driving forces behind the White Metal Glam Bands. These bands were supposed to be opposite of the Sleaze Metal yet still had the same lyrical play and fierce sounds. The charismatic Kip Winger was originally a bassist for the Alice Cooper band, but realizing he had great vocals decided to start up his own band. This was the last single off their debut album "Winger" . Winger was known for adding in Strings to their songs. You can hear some beautiful strings on this song's intro.

I'll share a few songs that didn't make the Hot 100 of 1989 but were hits back home and in my personal chart --and belong to artists that have already appeared in this RD's bottom 50:
- Radio Romance (Tiffany): This was her last hit back home, and the only one from this album. The video was also quite popular. I really liked the disco pop vibe of this one, and that sax bridge followed by a more subdued lead vocals and old-school background vocals. This was Tiffany's last personal char-topper -although she'd manage to get another top 5. I was surprised at how bad this flopped in the US (?). I would've ranked this inside the top 40 of this RD.
- Take Me To Your Heart (Rick Astley): This was Rick's last hit back home, and his 3rd and last personal chart-topper. This was also THE biggest hit of this era and the 3rd most popular song by Rick back home. Another solid dance pop hit with the SAW trademark. Catchy song, with great lead and background vocals, that I still listen to.
- Crazy About Her (Rod Stewart): This was his second biggest hit from 'Out of Order' back home and in my personal chart. Lost In You was a personal #2 hit in 1988, and this was personal #4 in 1989. The saxophone, drums, and rock energy made me like it quite a bit, although with time I've grown to like MHCTYN a bit more. Still, I'm surprised that MHCTYN was the only OoO single that made it to a yearend Hot 100.
- Forever Young (Rod Stewart): Speaking of Out of Order, this song was a minor hit in 1988 but regained popularity in 1989, especially being played more often in music TV channels. With time, this has become my favorite OoO song. The lyrics, sound, vocals, sound, work very well. It's a song that has connected emotionally with me at multiple times, too...
- Get on your Feet (Gloria Estefan): A minor hit back home, and a personal top 10. I like the Latin flavor here, and the chants in the last minute. It's like a 1989 version of 1-2-3, so I would've likely ranked it in my 60s...
Her biggest hit this era? Si Voy a Perderte, the Spanish version of DWLY, which was very popular in Spanish-only radio stations
- Electric Youth (Debbie Gibson): This was Debbie's biggest hit this year back home, as not only the song made the top 10 lists of all main radio stations, but also the video was amongst the most popular of the year in TV music shows (unlike Lost in your Eyes that wasn't that appealing visually, and unlike Like A Prayer... as TV shows would much rather present a video with old men dancing and kids playing instruments than a video with a scantily clad woman kissing a black 'saint' in a church or dancing in front of burned crosses lol). Actually, we could say that Debbie was THE female artist of the year back home after the huge success of LIYE and EY. She was quite big in my personal chart, with LIYE and EY staying atop for a couple of weeks each. EY would've been in my top 30 of this RD, by the way, I still like the melody, especially in the intro and the bridge, as well as the overall more mature dance sound (compared with the bubble gum sound of Only in my Dreams).
- No More Rhyme (Debbie Gibson): And following the success of LIYE and EY, No More Rhyme became a radio top 10, and a personal top 5. Not as strong as LIYE, but still a nice melodic tune with solid vocals (including background), and of course sax! It would've likely been around #50 if included in this RD.
Extra: - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind) (New Kids On The Block): This wasn't really a 'hit' back home, but received good rotation in pop stations that were all into New Kids mania, and was in my personal chart for a few weeks although below my top 20. I was a New Kids fan, so it was nice to listen to music from their previous album, with younger Jordan and Joey vocals.

Some more of 1989's best extras charted big on my YE list. In this next 20 reveals we will see 3 excellent Erasure songs that somehow got completely overlooked by the billboard YE countdown, One half of Soft cell gone solo and more from the biggest Glam Metal acts of the year. 70. Secret Society - We Belong Together (DOC #7)Secret Society had one of the biggest underground Freestyle hits of the year. "We Belong Together" has gone on to appear on many Freestyle classics compilations. The style of the songs was a lot like Noel - "Silent Morning". They also added in saxophones for a more refined sound almost sounding like a combination of New Romantic/New Wave sound and Freestyle. 69. image post White Lion - Little Fighter (HOT 100 #52) (DOC #9) We have already come across two of White Lion's biggest hits, but of course I charted more White Lion. This song was the first single off "Pride"s followup album "Big Game". It also became one of MTV's most played videos on the year. 68. Deon Estus - Heaven Help Me (HOT 100 #5) (DOC #7)Deon Estus was most known as the bassist for Wham. In 1989 he released his solo album "Spell" with many tracks including this one produced by George Michael. Everyone remembers the backups on this record done by George Michael himself. The song eventually became a top 5 hit on the Hot 100. 67. Jason Donovan - Too Many Broken Hearts (U.K. #1) (IRE #1) (DOC #7)Many consider Jason Donovan the Australian Rick Astley. "Too Many Broken Hearts" even had that classic SAW vibe and sounded a lot like the Energy style of the U.K. I actually thought is was a Rick Astley song until I saw the MV. The U.S. was too busy with Rick to Chart Jason, but throughout the 80's, Jason scored 7 top 10 hits on the U.K. charts including this #1 single. I always thought the MV was hilarious. Jason was strumming away on a guitar to an obvious Hi-Energy dance song. LOL! 66. (a song we have not seen yet) (HOT 100 #2) (DOC #9) 65. Tom Petty - Runnin' Down A Dream (HOT 100 #23) (DOC #7)Tom Petty scored two hits on the HOT 100 in 1989, yet none made the year end list. On my YE chart you can guarantee Tom Petty songs charting. This was the second single off "Full Moon Fever". The MV features Tom in his famous Top Hat opening up a book which tells the music video's story through animation. I always thought Tom Petty and Foo Fighters share similar vibes in some of their songs. This is a song I could easily see Foo Fighters perform. 64. Erasure - Stop (HOT 100 #97) (U.K. #2) (DOC #8)This is the first of those three Erasure songs I promised you. The British synth pop duo never cracked the top 10 on the U.S pop charts, but had a huge string of singles throughout Europe. This song was the first single off their E.P. "Crackers International" 63. Breathe - Don't Tell Me Lies (HOT 100 #10) (DOC #7)The British band Breath was one of my favorites acts on the 80's. Their brand of sophistipop did so much to grace the pop charts. "Don't Tell Me Lies was originally released in 1986 and was the official first single off "All That Jazz". It had better luck when it was re released in 1988 after they had established themselves with "Hands To Heaven" and "How Can I Fall". The song broke away from thier usual ballad style, and instead had a melodic poprock sound. It also went on to go top 10 on the HOT 100. 62. Sa-Fire - Gonna Make It (Hot 100 #71) (DOC #7) / Sa- Fire - Love Is On Her Mind (Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales #180 (DOC #7) www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KssGCdnoYMHere I did one of my famous double charting a/b sides. I would do this when I liked two songs from an artist, but missed out on the first single when it was popular. I also did this with two of Interpol's biggest singles. "Slow Hands" and "Evil" and Wham's "Last Christmas" and "Edge Of Heaven", so both would go to #1. Anyway, Sa-Fire continued to be a driving force in the Freestyle scene. Both these songs went top 20 on Billboard's dance music charts. 61. Debbie Gibson - Electric Youth (HOT 100 #11) (DOC #6)The title track off her "Electric Youth LP, became the biggest hit on my chart that year. This song stalled at #11 on the HOT 100. On my chart it climb to #6. I found it very NRGeitc and also had a strong Latin Beat to it. It also had a lot of laser beam effects which I found very appealing. 60. upload pictureRick Astley - Take Me To Your Heart (U.K. #8) (IRE #1) (DOC #6) At #60 is the first of two Rick Astley songs that made my YE chart. This song didn't chart in the U.S. but went top 10 all over the rest of the globe. The song is immensely catchy and NRGetic , and The Music video is amazingly fun as it shows Rick in one of his most playful moods while the crew and band are filming the video. 59. Warrant - Down Boys (HOT 100 #27) (DOC #8)Warrant is one of my favorite Glam Metal bands of all time. This was the first single that exploded onto MTV. It was top 5 for multiple weeks on MTV TRL and one of Pirate radio's most played songs of the year. This was also the band's first top 40 hit. 58.
Cover Girls - My Heart Skips A Beat (HOT 100 #38) (DOC #4)The Cover Girls were still going strong in 1989. This song was off their album "We Can't Go Wrong" which spawned the top 10 hit of the same name. For some reason HOT 100 only dug on their ballads, but this song was a top 5 on the U.S. Dance Chart. By this year bands like Cover Girls were starting to sound more like dance Pop than Freestyle, and they had apparently also run out of Hairspray , but this song still had the Hi-NRG synths. 57. Marc Almond - Tears Run Rings (HOT 100 #67) (DOC #4)Marc Almond was one half of the New Wave band Soft Cell. This song was a late comer to my charts. Originally released in 1988, it didn't reach my ears until I heard the Hi- NRG extended version my cousins would mix at their House parties. This is the single version of the song. 56. host a photo and uploadBon Jovi - Born To Be My Baby (HOT100 #3) (DOC #7)New Jersey is not my preferred Bon Jovi record. I charted all the singles, but this was the highest single I charted from this album. Which means the HOT 100 actually charted a Glam Metal song higher than me. 55. Erasure - Knocking At Your Door (DOC #4)The second song from Erasure I charted that year was a song I vaguely recall KROQ palying back then, but I do recall my Dee Jay counsins spinning it at parties. It sounded a lot like sped up version of Paul Lekakis's "Boom Boom Boom (Let's Go Back To My Room)" , which is probably the reason I charted it so high. The radio edit sounds more like a preview of the song. If you want the real fierce Hi-NRG version you gotta listen to the extended 6 minute version. 54. Duran Duran - I Don't Want Your Love (HOT 100 #4) (DOC #4) We are up to one of Duran Duran's 1989 singles. Are we ranking this one? I forget. It's not one of my favorites anymore , but back than I must have really dug it cuz it comes in right outside of my top 50. 53. Kix - Don't Close Your Eyes (HOT 100 #11) (DOC #7)Back onto the Glam Metal vibe. This is the only song from Kix that actually made my top 10. Leave it to the Powerballad to become their biggest charting single. This was also a big HOT on Hot 100 peaking at #11. The lyrics cover the theme of suicide. Great lyrics when you pay attention to the song. "Don't close your eyes, Don't sing your last lullaby" always struck me as a great lyric. 52. Skid Row - Youth Gone Wild (HOT 100 #99) (DOC #7)Skid Row went on to become one of the most popular Hair Metal bands of the 80's. With their hard guitar riffs and Sebastian Bach's larger then life vocals the band was a lot less Glam and more of the Alice Cooper, Guns N' Roses Heavy Metal style. Hard and Loud. This was the first single on the radio. It is also the one that paved the way for their two big Top 10 hits. I always loved this song for its rebellious youth theme. This was also very popular video on MTV. 51. Erasure - A Little Respect (HOT 100 #14) (DOC #6)..and as promised Erasure song #3. This was the last single off the album "The Innocents". It also became the band's second and only other top 20 on HOT 100. It was very popular single among the Modern Rock radio stations like KROQ and 91x. To me it was another great synthpop song which was enough to crack my top 10. Whew I finally caught up to the actual rank down.
