Here comes the purge I was dreading... "On Our Own" would've been my 29, "The Way You Love Me" 11, and "The Lover in Me" 5. I hope "Secret Rendezvous" and "Every Little Step" can hang on a little longer.

Is it wrong that I'm actually more upset about "18 and Life" going out than "Patience"? "18 and Life" should not be missing the top 40. It's one of the best written songs on this entire list. It'd be like if another song that I have in a similar spot missed the top 40. (No spoilers.)
"Patience", meanwhile, was doomed the moment it showed up alongside its two vastly more popular siblings. To be honest, I thought there was a chance it could miss the top half.
(For the record, "Giving You the Best That I Got" was the song I was referring to before that I was surprised to see still in. Pleasantly surprised it made the top half.)

Good set of reveals. Iâm surprised my highest loss is my #14. Also, happy for When in Rome and Love & Rockets making the top 40.

(Don't come at me with When the Children Cry...it felt like a bad version of If Today Was Your Last Day and songs of that type). Both other GnR songs I ranked higher than Patience, by the way. As for Batdance, wasn't planning on making it in my top 2. But it hit both ears with good stuff: the samples used from Batman, Prince's rock guitar, the driving keyboards (I think it even managed to include things for each ear to listen to). I can even forgive the random callouts to Jackie. By the way, if you really like the Christian Bale Dark Knight movies, I'd give both Michael Keaton Batmans a shot.

#50. Satisfied- Richard MarxGood rock vibe. Richard Marx had some pretty good songs. #49. Love In An Elevator - AerosmithDamn I lose at least one top 10 in every set, and its usually my Metal jams. This turned out to be my favorite Aerosmith Era. A perfect mesh of the Glam and Blues Metal vibes they were known for. 1990 was an even better year for them. #48. Giving You The Best That I Got - Anita BakerThese Whitney Houston like ballads did very little for me. #47. On Our Own - Bobby BrownBobby was on a roll. This wasn't one of my favorites from him, but ti still had a bit of that New Jack Swing fun vibe. Bobby Brown had really great tones for his style of Rap. #46. The Way You Love Me - Karyn WhiteA little higher position would have been better. This was my favorite Karyn White jam. The Music Video was smoking too. #45. The Lover In Me - Sheena EastonIts crazy when the member who put Alice Cooper at #1 also puts Sheena Easton song in the top 20, but this was one of my biggest hits of that year. I always found Sheena Easton's vocal delivery to be sexy and sultry. Plus Sheena Easton looked smokin' HOT. #44. Two Hearts - Phil CollinsThe retro sound reminded me of "You Can't Hurry Love" a bit. Much better than some of those other sappy ballads he was known for. #43. 18 And Life - Skid RowI've come to realize that PULSe will never get the awesomeness of Glam/Hair Metal. Not even if the lyrics are awesome. Sebastian Bach had some of the genre's most powerful vocals back than. Even higher than Axel's. He could hold those notes like no body business. The lyrics of this song also hit home when one of my rocker neighbors accidently blew away his younger brother with his dad's shotgun. Exactly like the songs lyrics, except he didn't go to jail. #42. Patience - Guns 'N RosesOne of the very few GN'R songs that just didn't work for me. The vibe was not Powerballad. It was way too soft and that whole whistle thing kinda tuned me out. Guns N' Roses lite. No thanks. #41. Batdance - PrinceThis is one of Prince's biggest travesties. I hardly found a song or even a proper melody in this at all. Just a bunch of noize. Prince hardly sings and by the time he does I just didn't care anymore. If this song was meant as experimentation good for him, but this would have been better off locked in a vault.

50. Satisfied (60): A minor hit back home and an underperformer in my personal chart. I've grown to like its rock vibe more with time, though, as it has aged a bit better than Should've Known Better. 49. Love In An Elevator (49): Also a minor hit back home, although the video was quite popular. It was a minor hit in my personal chart, but I've grown to like it more with time. I liked Angel much more. Good to have another P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!! 48. Giving You The Best That I Got (79): This type of ballad wasn't played back home and barely made it to my personal chart. That's what happened with GYTBTIG. I've tried to like it but it's always been a bit too meh to me --I like Sweet Love more. 47. On Our Own (68): Another genre that wasn't popular back home or with me I heard this for the first time in the Non-Stop-Pop RD, where I placed it last. I gave it another chance now, and I liked it more... 46. The Way You Love Me (92): I did hear this back in the day, but I didn't care about it, and I still don't. I like other songs from her better. 45. The Lover In Me (32): I wish radio stations back home had played this back in the day. I only heard this in like 91 or so, and quickly turned into one of my favorite NJS type of songs. I was a big Sheena Easton fan, so that might have biased me a bit, but I also think this had some more pop vibe, and her vocals were great, too. Good to see it in the top half. 44. Two Hearts (26): A #1 back home and in my personal chart. Much more successful than AGKoL. I still like the pop rock vibe of this, with fun and melodic elements, and I especially love the bridge. Good to see it top 50! 43. 18 and Life (64): This was a first listen for me. Melody and vocals were stronger than most other rock ballads in this RD, so it kept beating several songs, including familiar ones. Maybe with more familiarity I could rank it a bit higher, although the melody is still not as strong as many other songs this year. 42. Patience (21): A big hit back home and a personal chart-topper --and one of my top yearend songs. I really like the more mellow, tender vibe of this song, with vocals (and whistle) that matched the lyrics and music. I could go without the last part of the song, but even with it, this is the type of timeless, classic song that I dig. 41. Batdance (91): I like Prince, and I even liked the novelty of this song at the beginning. It made the top 5 of our 3rd most popular radio station, and the #1 of the most popular video chart. It debuted quickly in my chart, and I liked it as a companion to the Batman movie, but after I watched the movie and the novelty started to wear off, this peaked in my teens and then quickly fell off. Nowadays it just sounds like an utter unmelodic mess. It has a few good moments, but not enough to escape my bottom 10 even if it's Prince. I'm not surprised to see this make it to the top half over much better songs, though. It's like a lot of Prince songs are slightly over-rated here IMO

A handful of songs with some type of Latin connection that made my personal top 10 in 1989:
- Gimme Hope Joanna (Eddy Grant) was born in British Guyana (ie South America), and this song had a lot of Latin, Caribbean flair, which in turn has African influences. It all makes sense as this song, despite its joyful and party vibe with a title that may lead you to think this is about a woman, this is an actual political song protesting about the apartheid and violence rooted in Johannesburg and affecting South Africa. This song made the top 10 back home (practically a party song) and the top of my personal chart, with pretty good longevity, reaching my yearend top 15.
- Chuck is the King (Eddy Grant): Following the success of GHJ on our 3rd most popular radio station, this song also made the top of that station. I liked the more rock-and-roll vibe of this one (chorus and bridge) and it reached the #2 in my chart. To be honest, I hadn't heard this song in 20 years or so, but I still remembered the chorus :)
- Good Times (Matt Bianco): Following the big success of Don't Blame It On The Girl, Good Times became a minor hit back home. I liked its Latin dance pop sound (+ sax! and that bridge) quite a bit, and still do (I keep it in my iPhone :) ). This song made it to #6 in my personal chart.
- Buffalo Soldier Remix (Bob Marley): I don't know why, but this remix version of BS became a minor hit this year --and soon afterwards it became a staple in radio stations playing 80s music. This made my personal top 10 and, as much as I love the original, I like the extra energy and flavor of this one a bit more :)
- Look Who's Dancing (Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers): A minor hit back home and a song that made my personal top 10 but had little longevity. I grew to like it more with time, as it also became more popular with time back home.
- Jamaica Reggae (Los Pericos): Although they are Argentinean, they recorded a few songs in English, like this one, their first hit back home. Continuing with the reggae hits from 1989, this was a hit back home, and made my personal top 5. Another song I hadn't heard in about 20 years, but I hadn't forgotten either (really liked the music here)
- La Pachanga (Los Pericos): This was their follow-up, a minor hit back home following on the success of JR. It reached my personal top 10, although it's less memorable than JR

Just ten more slots and we break into the top 40. this next set of mine includes a few songs still in the running, so it will mainly look like a who's who in 1989 Metal. 50. ? (HOT 100 #7) (DOC #7)49. ? (HOT 100 #3) (DOC #4)
48. Britny Fox - Long Way To Love (HOT 100 #100) (U.S. main Rock #33) (DOC #5)Up next is my highest charting single by this band. This is a great Metal song. Dean Davidson sounds a lot like Paul Stanley and the song itself even has some "Lick It Up" guitar riffs, but the main reason i couldn't get enough of this song was that guitar solo. 47. photo upload sitesCheap Trick - Ghost Town (HOT 100 #33) (DOC #5)This was the third single off "Lap Of Luxury". I remember liking this one the first time I listened to it. It's more of a Country rock ballad, but I loved it just as much as I did "The Flame". The lyrics felt like a lot of heart was poured into them and as I watched the MV I really felt the lonesome soul vibe that Robin was portraying. 46. Poison - Fallen Angel (HOT 100 #12) (DOC #4)This song was originally released in 1988, but since I didn't really get into "Every Rose has Its Thorn" I kept it on my charts throughout 1989 as well. The thing about Poison's MVs is that they are hard to find on youtube. Its a shame because the original video told the story about a young woman heading it to Hollywood to follow her dreams of Stardom and fame only to be let down. Anyway this fan uploaded video has even more hot babes so why complain? 45. Kiss - (You Make Me) Rock Hard (DOC #5)Kiss released their "Smashes, Thrashes & Hits" compilation in 1988. In it were two new songs. "Let's Put The X in Sex" which we will run into much later and this second single. Both did rather poorly on the HOT 100, but both went top 5 on my charts. Once again the charismatic Paul Stanley delivers the vocals and the moves on this Glam Rock monster song. 44. Expose - What You Don't Know (HOT 100 #8) (DOC #4)this was tone of the last times Expose graced my chart. This time around Gioia Bruno did the vocals for the song. She was also the one that performed vocals on "Let Me Be The One". Don't really know what became of them after this last record. I think they concentrated more on Adult Contemporary ballads? Not sure, but this was still a big Freestyle oriented classic that delivered the Latin fire. 43. ? (HOT 100 #3) (DOC #5)
42. Mötley CrÌe - Dr. Feelgood (HOT 100 #6) (DOC #4)Here is a band we will get a chance to rank on 1990 YE pop singles, but not with this song. I was surprised to see this one didn't make the 1989 YE chart. Aside from being a great song it was also a Top 10 song with a #6 peak. Anyway, this song had a fierce groove to it from the start. It was also one of the most danceable Metal songs of the year. The style was a lot like Ratt's "Round and Round" , so it had no problem shooting up my chart. 41. San - Show Me (DOC #4)I close up this set with a Hi -Energy cover to a classic Freestyle song. The original by The Cover Girls was already a club classic so naturally The Eurpoeans wanted to do a HI- NRG dance cover. Fonny DeWulf known for his Rofo disco classics did an incredible remix of the song. He kept all the Latin fire but amped the BPMs and condensed the synths for a more Hi- NRG flavour. This was also a huge hit at the House party's.

This is the most shocking placement so far for me. I love REM, but the repetitiveness of Stand made me want to jump into traffic. Was a great theme song for Get A Life.
