Kane Brown's 'Lose It' Dethrones 'Meant To Be' After Record 50 Weeks Atop Hot Country Songs Chart

Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's record-breaking run with "Meant To Be" is halted, as Kane Brown's "Lose It" takes over the top spot of the Hot Country Songs chart (dated Nov. 24). FGL and Rexha's country-pop crossover smash spent a record 50 total weeks at No. 1, after debuting at the apex on Dec. 16, 2017.

Brown's latest hit now crowns the airplay, streaming and sales-based Hot Country Songs chart, as "Lose It" leaps 6-1. The 25-year-old Brown managed a similar feat in 2017, his first Hot Country Songs No. 1 "What Ifs" (featuring Lauren Alaina) breaking Sam Hunt's then record-setting run with "Body Like a Back Road," which held the top spot on the chart for 34 weeks.

"Lose It" is the lead single from Brown's sophomore LP, Experiment, the country star's second No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart, dated Nov. 24, earning 124,000 equivalent album units (105,000 in traditional album sales) in its first week, ending Nov. 15, according to Nielsen Music. The sums mark Brown's biggest week in both consumption and album sales.

Brown is the first artist to lead Hot Country Songs and Top Country Albums simultaneously since he did so on Oct. 28, 2017, when "What Ifs" spent its second of five weeks at No. 1 on the former and Kane Brown led the latter. His self-titled first LP debuted atop the Dec. 24, 2016-dated Top Country Albums chart, adding 11 more weeks at the summit, beginning Oct. 28, 2017, following its reissue with bonus tracks. The set reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200.

On the all-genre Billboard 200, Experiment enters as Brown's first No. 1. It's also the third country set to lead the list in 2018, following Carrie Underwood's Cry Pretty (Sept. 29) and Jason Aldean's Rearview Town (April 28); four did so in 2017.


"Lose It" lifts 6-2 on Country Streaming Songs (8.7 million U.S. streams, up 27 percent) and 5-3 on the Country Airplay chart (36.1 million in audience, up 10 percent). Along with "Lose It," four other Experiment tracks sit on the Hot Country Songs chart this week, with "Homesick" at No. 28, "Good as You" at No. 32, "Weekend" at No. 40 and "Baby Come Back to Me" at No. 42.

Brown signed to RCA Nashville in early 2016 after building a strong following through social media starting in 2014, mainly by posting covers of songs by such artists as George Strait, Brantley Gilbert and Alan Jackson. Prior to his deal with RCA, Brown independently released the six-song EP Closer, which debuted on Top Country Albums at No. 22 in June 2015 and peaked at No. 7 that November. Five-song follow-up EP Chapter 1 (on RCA) debuted and peaked at No. 3 in April 2016.

Jimmie Allen Takes His 'Best Shot' and Crowns Country Airplay Chart

Rising country star Jimmie Allen's "Best Shot" lifts 3-1 in its 40th week on Billboard's Country Airplay chart (dated Nov. 24) and, for the third time in 2018, an artist's debut chart entry tops the tally. The song increases by 4 percent to 42 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music.

"Best Shot," which Allen wrote with Josh London and JP Williams, is the freshman single from his first LP, Mercury Lane, which debuted and peaked at No. 11 on Top Country Albums (Oct. 27) following its Oct. 12 release. The 32-year-old Allen named the album after the street on which he grew up in Delaware, but the songs on the LP serve as more of a letter to his 4-year-old son, Aiden, to help guide him through life -- and "Best Shot" is a perfect example of that.

"We wrote ["Best Shot"] from a personal place about taking each day to be a better person," Allen told Billboard backstage at the CMA Awards on Nov. 14. "Because at the end of the day, the song is a self-evaluation song, because when you’re a better person, you can be a better husband, a better wife, a better father ... We just wanted to be honest to ourselves, and to see so many people connect to the song and say, 'You know, I can relate to this song whether it’s a relationship with a lover or a relationship with a parent or a kid,' it’s just been great ... It’s been very rewarding to show that we’re a lot more alike than different."

With "Best Shot" reaching the top spot of Country Airplay this week, Allen plans to celebrate the song's success by taking some much-needed time off and spend it with Aiden. "This year’s been great, but it’s pulled me away from him so much," Allen adds. "Nobody call me! I just want to spend two days with my son."

"Best Shot" is the third debut hit to top Country Airplay this year, following Jordan Davis' "Singles You Up" (April 21) and Russell Dickerson's "Yours" (Jan. 27 and Feb. 3). In 2017, two debut Country Airplay entries reigned: Carly Pearce's "Every Little Thing" (Nov. 25) and Luke Combs' "Hurricane” (two weeks starting May 27).

Aretha Franklin Earns First AC Entry Since 1994 as Holiday Hits Jingle Onto the Chart

The late Queen of Soul debuts with a new mix of 'Silent Night.'

Aretha Franklin appears on Billboard's Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart for the first time in over 24 years, as a new version of "Silent Night" debuts at No. 28 on the survey dated Nov. 24.

The song, fully titled "Silent Night (Solo Piano Version)," was originally released on the late icon's 2008 album This Christmas, which arrived on vinyl for the first time Nov. 16.

"Her beautiful spirit is radiant throughout the record, and this new mix of 'Silent Night' showcases what an incomparable force she truly was, both on vocals and piano," said the album's producer Tena Clark. "There has [never been] and never will be a voice like the Queen of Soul."

The song is the first by Franklin, who died Aug. 16, to reach the AC chart since 1994, when "Willing to Forgive" reached No. 22 that August. Franklin adds her 17th AC entry, dating to her first, the No. 34-peaking "I'm Losing You," in 1965. She charted highest with two duets: "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," with George Michael (No. 2, 1987), and "Through the Storm," with Elton John (No. 3, 1989).


"Silent Night" is one of five carols that debut on the latest AC chart, as the format makes its annual segue to playing seasonal songs.

Hot 100 Chart Moves: Ariana Grande's 'Breathin' Bounds After Video Premiere

As previously reported, Ariana Grande's "Thank U, Next" leads the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Nov. 24) for a second week. The song blasted in atop the Hot 100 a week ago, becoming Grande's first No. 1 on the chart.

Grande also surges just below the Hot 100's top 10, as "Breathin" bounds from No. 21 to No. 14 for a new peak, following the Nov. 7 premiere of its official video. The song charges by 28 percent to 15.6 million U.S. streams and 2 percent to 12,000 sold in the week ending Nov. 15, according to Nielsen Music.

"Breathin" also becomes Grande's 10th top 10 on the Radio Songs chart, rising 12-7 (68.7 million in all-format airplay audience, up 17 percent, in the week ending Nov. 18).

"Breathin" is from Grande's third No. 1 Billboard 200 album, Sweetener, which debuted atop the chart dated Sept. 1, while "Next" is, as of now, a stand-alone track. "Breathin" follows two Hot 100 top 10s from the set: "No Tears Left to Cry" (No. 3 peak in May) and "God Is a Woman" (No. 8, September).

Who else makes notable chart moves?

"Youngblood," 5 Seconds of Summer
As the track drops 11-12 on the Hot 100, after becoming the band's first top 10, reaching No. 7, it becomes 5SOS' first No. 1 on the Adult Pop Songs airplay chart. The single previously became the group's first No. 1, for five weeks, on the Pop Songs airplay tally.

Brown basks in an exceptional chart week, debuting at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Country Albums with his sophomore LP Experiment, while the set's lead single, "Lose It," becomes his second No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, following "What Ifs," featuring Lauren Alaina, for five weeks beginning Oct. 21, 2017.

On the Hot 100, "Lose It" becomes Brown's third top 40 hit, soaring 53-28. "What Ifs" reached No. 26 last November and follow-up "Heaven" hit No. 15 this May.

Notably, Brown has dethroned the two longest-leading Hot Country Songs hits all-time: "What Ifs" unseated Sam Hunt's 34-week No. 1 "Body Like a Back Road" and "Lose It" replaces Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line's "Meant to Be" after an unprecedented 50 weeks on top.

"Speechless," Dan + Shay
The duo scores its second top 40 Hot 100 hit, as the song climbs 45-38. Its first? "Tequila," which jumps 43-36 after reaching No. 21 in July. The pair performed the latter song on the 52nd annual Country Music Association Awards Nov. 14.

"Speechless" lifts 8-7 on Country Airplay, up 11 percent to 29.6 million impressions. "Tequila" became the duo's fourth No. 1 on the chart in July.

"Leave Me Alone," Flipp Dinero
The Brooklyn rapper reaches the Hot 100's top 40 with his first entry (41-37), which ascends 32-30 on Streaming Songs (15.3 million, up 3 percent).

Dinero told Billboard that the song's subject knew that it's about her when she heard it. "Of course," he said. "She's like, 'Why are you dissing me?' I'm like, 'What do you mean? I'm not dissing you. It's the truth.' [But] she loves it. It's a vibe. It's a funny song, but it's an emotional song. It's so real, and she knows it's real, too, so she had to respect it. I really did tell her to leave me alone."
