That is contrary to their longterm policy to go with radio-edits or (in the old days) 45 versions, right?

Ugh.

I can shed some light on that.  Billboard had a reader state that currently he could only get the longer Hillsong United version on iTunes, thus it should be added to the list.  I replied that the shorter radio edit WAS available on iTunes, at least for awhile, and obviously radio was playing the shorter version, but they decided to add it anyway.  Personally, I wouldn't add it, but their list, their call.

Obviously, we could come up with a pretty big list of long album versions, but since the Hot 100 has always been a singles chart, I wouldn't include them on such a list.

The song runs just 37 seconds.
Kid Cudi's "Beautiful Trip" runs just 37 seconds long and debuts at the No. 100 anchor spot on the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart, but those numbers are enough for the song to make history.

Upon its entrance, the track breaks the record for the shortest Hot 100 hit by song length in the chart's entire 62-year archives.

The song is eight seconds shorter than the former record-holder, Piko-Taro's "PPAP (Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen)." At 45 seconds in its quickest form, "PPAP" reached No. 77 on the Hot 100 in October 2016.

Kid Cudi sets the mark on the Hot 100 dated Dec. 26, 2020, a year after Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road," featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, became the shortest No. 1 hit by length since 1965, running 1:53 in its briefest iteration.

Still, last year also brought a new record for the lengthiest Hot 100 hit by run time: Tool's "Fear Inoculum" spent a week at No. 93, on the Aug. 17, 2019-dated tally, becoming the first song in the chart's history with a run time exceeding 10 minutes (10:21).


Long story short, here's an updated look at the shortest and longest Hot 100 hits all-time, as confirmed by the invaluable Paul Haney of Joel Whitburn's Record Research. (Songs are measured by the shortest version of a song for the first list and the longest for the second.)

At 10 minutes and 13 seconds, Swift's hit smashed a record that had been held by Don McLean's 'American Pie' for almost 50 years. His 1971 release topped the chart in January 1972, and is 8.42 minutes long.

Lil Nas X - 'Old Town Road'
In 2019, Lil Nas X released one of the shortest Billboard chart toppers of all time with his genre-defying hit 'Old Town Road,' which clocked in at 113 seconds, or 1.88 minutes.

Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs - 'Stay'
Lil Nas X couldn't top the short and sweet 1960 doo-wop classic 'Stay,' which clocks in at 1.36 minutes.

Herman's Hermits - 'I'm Henry VIII, I Am'
But 'Old Town Road' was the shortest Billboard chart topper since 1965, when British band Herman's Hermits scored a number one with this cockney classic, which comes in at 1.50 minutes.


Meatloaf - 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light'
Although he was some way off the number one spot, Meatloaf's 7.55-minute epic from 1978 made the Billboard top 40. The single was shortened from the album version, which ran to 8.28 minutes

Pikotaro - 'PPAP (Pen-Pen-Apple-Pen)'
A 45-second hit song created by a fictional character? Step forward Pikotaro, aka Japanese comedian Daimaou Kosako, who scored a viral hit with this 2016 release. A chart topper in Japan, it entered the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 77, becoming the shortest song to chart.

Guns N' Roses - 'November Rain'
At 8.57 minutes, Guns N' Roses' epic power ballad became the longest song to make the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 on its release in 1992. It reached number three.

Elvis Presley - '(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear'
Legendary hip-swinger Elvis Presley kept things short and sweet with this US chart-topper from 1957. At 1.46 minutes, it stayed at the top for seven weeks.

Napalm Death - 'You Suffer'
British grindcore act Napalm Death infamously hold the Guinness World Record for shortest song ever. At 1.3 seconds long, it didn't trouble the charts but it did enter the record books.

Adam Faith - 'What Do You Want?'
English teen idol Adam Faith scored one of the shortest hit records in history with this 1.38-minute track. 'What Do You Want?' sailed to the top of the UK charts in 1959 and stayed put for three weeks.

The Beatles - 'From Me to You'
The Beatles' third single was their first UK number one, setting the charts alight at just 1.56 minutes long in 1963. It made the US pop charts the following year, as the flip side to 'Please Please Me.

Only slightly longer at 1.19 minutes, Beyoncé and James Blake's 2016 track made number 63 on the Billboard Hot 100, and is the shortest track on her hit album 'Lemonade.'

Kanye West - 'Runaway'
Kanye's 2010 single 'Runaway' runs to 9.08 minutes long. It's bee ranked as one of the best songs of the 2010s, and an abridged single version reached number 12 on the Billboard chart.

It might be only 55 seconds long, but Ye managed to make number 63 on the Billboard chart with his 2019 track 'Jesus is Lord,' proving he can score a hit with any song length.

Kid Cudi - 'Beautiful Trip'
Fellow rapper Kid Cudi kept things even more brief. At 37 seconds, his 2020 single 'Beautiful Trip' became the shortest track to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, beating Pikotaro into second place when it snuck in at number 100.

Baz Luhrmann's 2007 spoken word hit topped the UK charts, and reached number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100. His advice-giving epic clocked in at 7.10 minutes, although a radio edit cut it down to 5.05.

New Order - 'Blue Monday'
British musical gamechangers New Order made history with 1983's 'Blue Monday', which is famously the biggest-selling 12-inch single of all time. The track ran to 7.29 minutes, and several subsequent remixes have charted in the UK, US, and across the globe.

The Box Tops - 'The Letter'
With a young Alex Chilton on vocals, American rock band The Box Tops had a US chart-topper with their catchy 1.58-minute single, released in 1967.

Queen - 'Bohemian Rhapsody'
Queen's operatic rock anthem made number one in the UK and number nine in the US, and the 5.55-minute 1975 single is now a stone cold classic.

The Doors - 'Light My Fire'
The Doors' legendary track 'Light My Fire' runs to 7.06 minutes in its album format. A single version shaved it down to 2.52 minutes, reaching number two in the US. But it's the original, full-length version that Doors fans know and love best.

Prince - 'Purple Rain'
Taken from the 1984 album of the same name, hit single 'Purple Rain' runs to an epic 8.41 minutes. Issued as a full-length 12-inch and abridged seven-inch single, it's ranked 18th in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and made it to number two on the Billboard chart.

Blondie - 'Rapture'
In an era when singles typically clocked in under three minutes, Blondie's hit single 'Rapture' was an outlier. Recorded in 1980, it came in at 6.31 minutes and topped the Billboard chart in 1981.

The Temptations - 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone'
The same year Don McLean's 'American Pie' entered the record books, The Temptations scored a Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper with their version of 'Papa Was a Rollin' Stone,' which runs to 6.54 minutes.

André 3000 Breaks Hot 100 Record With 12-Minute, 20-Second Hit From New Album

The song's title is long, too: "I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time."

Hit songs are generally quick – Billboard Hot 100 top 10s run an average of three minutes and 15 seconds in 2023, according to Hit Songs Deconstructed – but the three longest Hot 100 hits by run time have all charted since 2019, with a new record-breaker debuting on the latest, Dec. 2-dated survey.

André 3000’s “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time” has, fittingly given its title, a lengthy run time: 12 minutes and 20 seconds. As it enters the Hot 100 at No. 90, it becomes the longest-running song ever to have hit the chart, surpassing Tool’s “Fear Inoculum,” at 10:21 in length. André 3000’s track – an instrumental, also atypical for a modern Hot 100 hit – additionally bests the No. 93 peak of Tool’s track in August 2019.

Now in third place among the longest-running Hot 100 hits to date, Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)” is 10 minutes and 13 seconds in length (in its longest version). The song launched at No. 1 in November 2021, becoming the longest leader by run time in the chart’s archives.

André 3000’s track is from the former OutKast member’s debut, all-instrumental LP New Blue Sun, which arrives at No. 1 on the New Age Albums chart with 24,000 equivalent album units earned in the United States in its first week (Nov. 17-23), according to Luminate. The song starts with 5.8 million official streams (and 22,000 in radio audience, including exposure on adult alternative stations KEXP Seattle and WXPN Philadelphia).

OutKast – André 3000 and Big Boi – charted 19 Hot 100 hits in 1994-2007, including three No. 1s: “Ms. Jackson” (one week at No. 1, 2001); “Hey Ya!” (nine weeks, 2003-04); and “The Way You Move” featuring Sleepy Brown (one week, 2004). The pair also scored five No. 1s on the Hot Rap Songs chart.

André 3000 adds his seventh solo Hot 100 entry, having reached a No. 24 high in 2008 as featured on John Legend’s “Green Light.”

Echoing the title of his new Hot 100 hit, the 48-year-old recently told NPR, “In my mind, I really would like to make a rap album. So, maybe that happens one day, but I got to find a way to say what I want to say in an interesting way that’s appealing to me at this age.”
