Maroon 5's album has actually been doing really weak for how big GLY is...
It's #62 this week on Billboard 200. Even below Camila Cabello's album, Nicki Minaj's album, and Kendrick's DAMN. Even when GLY was #1, it was doing relatively bad.
September 29, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #30 Red Pill Blues October 6, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #36 Red Pill Blues October 13, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #36 Red Pill Blues October 20, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #40 Red Pill Blues October 27, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #37 Red Pill Blues November 3, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #47 Red Pill Blues November 10, 2018: #1 Girls Like You | #55 Red Pill Blues
A #1 single should have your album returning top 10, not struggling to stay top 40. The album was also not charting in the top 100 on the 'Top Album Sales' chart ANY of those weeks despite being SPAMMED at #1 on Hot AC/AC which are the formats that would still attract album sales gains in 2018.
They're kind of like elevator music to the public at this point.

GLY was attached to album afterwards though, I don't know if that matters but people might not had realised it was on it and thus never listened to album (as it is still also a standalone single on Spotify).

Finesse Remix was never attached to 24K Magic, yet the album jumped #15 to #4 the week it was released and got a clear revival. Then the album stayed top 20 for most of the single's run.

If girls like you smashed closer to album release then it probably wouldโve helped the album closer to the top of the chart but by the time it tooo off the album was selling 1k a week or so

Wasn't it because of the Grammys as well? Finesse was released January 4th, the GRAMMYs was January 28th. And GRAMMYs boosts generally die after 2 weeks, 3 weeks tops. 24K Magic left the top 20 in April.

I like Girls Like You and enjoy a hefty amount of Maroon 5 music, I don't understand all the hate. Maroon 5 is as bland as Camila Cabello yet you all stan her.

I'm so happy "Shallow" is actually serving longevity. It should be able to make the year end chart I hope!

Also, other than digital song sales, the two other things in which the song has done well, radio and YouTube (still #5 after 34 weeks) don't count toward the album's weekly SPS. Plus, I doubt many were buying or streaming the other songs from the album by the time GLY hit #1. Without the song the album would probably be below #100 in the Billboard 200.

Taki Taki and Breathin have got me wondering - which songs spent the longest in the top 20 without hitting top 10?
I have a suspicion I Donโt Want to Wait by Paula Cole might hold that record but honestly I have no idea.

I don't think people actively HATE Maroon 5, they are just very bland imo. GLY is their better songs but I would NEVER listen to their album in full, even most of their singles are such borefest. You've clearly never watched Todd In The Shadows.

^ And so did Maroon 5 with their debut album/era. They won the Best New Artist Grammy and possibly a couple others, I don't have time right now to look it up, and their album was top 5. As for whether they took "risks" I'm not sure, though I wouldn't say Camila did either.
As for people who say Red Pill Blues didn't do well for a No. 1 single, it's not uncommon at all for a single to go No. 1 and the album to not go top 10, especially if the No. 1 comes much later in the album's run, it's actually very hard for it to go back into the top 10. Plus I don't think the album has the Cardi remix to GLY does it?

What nobody's mentioned so far is that both Finesse and Girls Like You's remixes did count towards their respective albums' SPS. "Bruno Marsโ 24K Magic hits its highest rank in eight months, and returns to the top 10 after more than four months, climbing 15-4 with 37,000 units (up 75 percent). The set's rise is driven by the strong start of its new single, โFinesse,โ which has been boosted by a new remix with rapper Cardi B. (The remix is merged with the original version of "Finesse," and contributes to the SEA and TEA units of the song's parent album, as most remixes do.)" www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8094248/the-greatest-showman-soundtrack-spends-second-week-at-no-1-on-billboard-200-albums-chartThat Red Pill Blues still floundered while Girls Like You was crushing the singles chart was a testament to how radio and YouTube dependent the single was, as neither of those factors contribute to SPS.

Eh, you could say the same for I Like It as well, it only went #1 because either it performed a tiny bit better than SAD! or Billboard didn't count SAD!'s video release, and it got #1 right after a major death and riight before Drake ruled Billboard for 11 weeks. Havana's single run was nearly over vs. I Like It's having just begun, which does make a difference I guess.
