Ah "Torn" was such a monster, that song is timeless.

Basically held the record for 20 years.

And holds a #42 peak on H100. Tragic. Since Billboard was doing test charts for weeks/months, they should have given retroactive ‘peaks’ to those songs that chart after the major switch. My recollection was that Torn, Iris, Real World and Are You that Somebody suffered the worst post-switch fates.

Rihanna will be the “Radio Songs Artist of the 2010’s”, much like how Mariah Carey was the “Radio Songs Artist of the 1990’s”. Both artists also completely DOMINATED Pop / Rhythmic / Urban Radio at their respective peaks (albeit Mariah Carey had more reasonable AC/HAC success which Rihanna never did).

Rihanna was also named the “Greatest Pop Songs Artist of All Time” by BILLBOARD. Overall, I think Mariah Carey had a slightly bigger peak in audience on the airplay charts but Rihanna served far more consistency which is a core element of which she reigns supremes.

^ If we are measuring it by Nielsen audience impressions and including all radio formats, as well as recurrent play from when the songs aren't on the Billboard Hot 100, I think it's a little hard to say. Mariah has been around longer and has had more time to gather recurrent play, but audience levels overall weren't as high during her peak in the 90s to mid-2000s as Rihanna's peak during the late 2000s to 2010s, and Rihanna has also gained a lot of recurrent play during her 15 years on the charts. And we would also have to consider whether only partial credit would be given to features and duets, in which case Rihanna would be severely disadvantaged, so there's many different variables to consider...

This is where the various methods of tabulating airplay become relevant. Mariah has certainly had more than 11 songs hit #1 in airplay under the rules applied to Rihanna singles. I believe Mariah has had 15 songs hit #1 at Top 40. If all formats counted as they do now, something like "Always Be My Baby" would have likely been #1 in overall airplay as well. She'd have also possibly hit the top 10 with "My All" and/or "Butterfly."

Yup, one thing I don't like about Billboard's rules: if a song goes recurrent, it drops out of airplay even though it could still be top 15 in airplay...

They don't do that for streaming or sales.

"Delicate", "New Rules" both peaked in the top 10 year end airplay, but probably could've peaked even higher if their chart runs on airplay weren't cut so short.

Katy Perry had 6 #1s, and Taylor Swift had 3 massive #1s with other hits. Ariana has almost 2 #1s and an unsuccessful promo single so far. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
