Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Album Is in Historic Chart Company, Before Its Release
1/31/2019 by Gary Trust
The album is only the third with two songs to debut at No. 1 on the Hot 100, joining sets by Drake and Mariah Carey.
Ariana Grande's new album Thank U, Next isn't due to be released until Feb. 8, but it's already earned an impressive chart honor that only two albums previously have.
As reported Monday (Jan. 28), Grande's new single "7 Rings" soars in at No. 1 on the latest Hot 100 (dated Feb. 2), marking her second song to start at the chart's summit. "Thank U, Next" launched at No. 1 on Nov. 17 and ruled for seven weeks.
With both songs from Grande's album Thank U, Next, the set, ahead of its arrival, joins Drake's Scorpion and Mariah Carey's Daydream as the only albums each boasting two songs that have entered at No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Here's a look at the elite three albums each with a pair of No. 1-debuting hits on the Hot 100.
Thank U, Next, Ariana Grande "Thank U, Next," debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated Nov. 17, 2018 "7 Rings," debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated Feb. 2, 2019
Scorpion, Drake "God's Plan," debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated Feb. 3, 2018 "Nice for What," debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated April 21, 2018
Daydream, Mariah Carey "Fantasy," debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated Sept. 30, 1995 "One Sweet Day," with Boyz II Men, debuted at No. 1 on Hot 100 dated Dec. 2, 1995
Notably, Carey almost collected a third No. 1 Hot 100 debut from Daydream: third single "Always Be My Baby" started at No. 2, before beginning a two-week stay at No. 1 four weeks later. Plus, with her next album, 1997's Butterfly, lead single "Honey" began at No. 1 and subsequent single "My All" bowed at No. 2, before hitting No. 1 two weeks later.
Drake also almost notched three No. 1 Hot 100 debuts from Scorpion. In addition to "God's Plan" and "Nice for What" opening on top, "Nonstop" started, and peaked, at No. 2. (The set's third No. 1, "In My Feelings," debuted at No. 6 and began a 10-week reign the following week.)
Overall, Grande is just the fifth artist with multiple debuts at No. 1 in the Hot 100's history, joining Carey (the leader with three), Drake, Justin Bieber and Britney Spears (two each).

The chart that will include Ariana's album will be 2/23/2019 (15 days after it is released on the 8th), not the 16th. Is that the week you intend this thread to be for?

Caviar- I must have been going by the chart-debut date. :) Nonetheless, an awfully short time in-between studio albums.

will the grammy’s have a negative impact on Ariana’s album sales? she is not performing (maybe not even attending) so she won’t get any promo from it.

The younger streaming crowd is probably not watching the Grammys anyways, it's the biggest release of the week by far, etc... she might miss out on a few thousand copies but it won't really move the needle in either direction. It would be a missed opportunity though if she doesn't perform.
Anything below Sweetener numbers will be a relative underperformance in my opinion. She will probably sell less copies but streaming should make up for that in a big way.

Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Album Headed for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Chart
2/10/2019 by Keith Caulfield
Grande appears set for her fourth leader on the list, and second chart-topper since September.
Ariana Grande is aiming for a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200 chart with her latest studio album, Thank U, Next, according to industry prognosticators. Early forecasts suggest that the set, released Friday (Feb. 8) on Republic Records, could start with between 280,000 and 300,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 23, of which 90,000 to 100,000 should be in album sales.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Feb. 23-dated Billboard 200 chart -- where Next is likely to launch at No. 1 -- is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard's websites on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The bow will likely set the one-week streaming record for an album by a woman, beating Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy. That premiered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated April 21, 2018, with 255,000 equivalent album units overall, with 135,000 of that total in SEA units, translating to 202.6 million streams of the tracks on the album during its debut frame.
Grande is in line to earn her fourth Billboard 200 No. 1 total and second in less than six months, after Sweetener started atop the Sept. 1-dated tally. She previously reigned with My Everything in 2014 and her debut album, Yours Truly, in 2013.
Next has so far produced two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Grande's first leaders on the survey, both of which debuted on top: the title track (for seven weeks beginning in November) and "7 Rings" (which has led for its first two weeks). The video for the new LP's latest single, "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," arrived Friday (Feb. 8), concurrent with the album's release, and should soar onto next week's Hot 100 (dated Feb. 23) after its first full week of tracking.
Ahead of Grande's expected entrance, the newest Billboard 200, dated Feb. 16, finds A Boogie Wit da Hoodie's Hoodie SZN back at No. 1, as announced earlier today (Feb. 10). Additional reporting by Gary Trust.

Initially (on Feb. 10), industry forecasters suggested the album could bow with perhaps 280,000 to 300,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 14. Now, the album’s first-week forecast has jumped to 330,000 units. If Thank U starts as expected, it will nab the largest week for any album since Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V bowed at No. 1 on the Oct. 13, 2018-dated list with 480,000 units earned in its first week, according to Nielsen Music. Thank U would also score the biggest week for an album by a woman since Taylor Swift's reputation blew in at No. 1 on the Dec. 2, 2017, chart with 1.2 million units. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Feb. 23-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Thank U could debut at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Feb. 17. Sources say that Thank U will roll in to No. 1 with a robust SEA unit total, which could translate to perhaps 300 million on-demand audio streams for its songs in the U.S. If Thank U bows with a streaming sum that large, it will easily earn the biggest streaming week ever for an album by a woman, the largest streaming week for a pop album, and one of the top 10 biggest streaming weeks ever for an album of any genre. Assuming Thank U opens at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, it will secure Grande her fourth No. 1 album, and second in less than six months, after Sweetener started at No. 1 on the Sept. 1, 2018-dated tally. The newly minted Grammy Award winner previously reigned with My Everything in 2014 and her debut album, Yours Truly, in 2013. Next has so far produced two No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Grande's first leaders on the survey, both of which debuted on top: the title track (for seven weeks beginning in November) and "7 Rings" (which has led for its first three weeks). The video for the new LP's latest single, "Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored," arrived Friday (Feb. 8), concurrent with the album's release, and should soar onto next week's Hot 100 (dated Feb. 23) after its first full week of tracking.

Kacey Musgraves' 'Golden Hour' Set for Big Gain & Chart Return After Grammy Wins
News
By Keith Caulfield | February 13, 2019 7:18 PM EST
Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour album -- basking in the glow of its four Grammy Award wins on Feb. 10, including album of the year -- is set to re-enter the Billboard 200 chart next week with a massive gain in units earned.
According to industry forecasters, the album, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 last April, is poised to re-enter the chart dated Feb. 23, straight into the top 15, with perhaps 25,000 to 28,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 14. That would represent a gain of around 340 to 400 percent, as compared to what the album tallied in the week ending Feb. 7: 6,000 units, according to Nielsen Music.
Golden Hour won Grammy Awards for album of the year and best country album, while its songs “Butterflies” and “Space Cowboy” also took home trophies, for best country solo performance and best country song, respectively.
A number of other albums are likely to nab chart increases (or re-entries) following exposure on the Grammy Awards. Among them: Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys, Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, Drake’s Scorpion, Brandi Carlile’s By the Way, I Forgive You, H.E.R.’s self-titled set, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack, Dolly Parton’s hits package Ultimate Dolly Parton and Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/8498762/ariana-grande-thank-u-next-debuts-at-no-1-on-billboard-200-chart-albumAriana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Chart With Biggest Streaming Week Ever for a Pop Album2/17/2019 by Keith Caulfield Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next storms in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with 360,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Feb. 14, according to Nielsen Music. The set launches with the biggest week for a pop album in over a year and garners Grande her fourth No. 1 -- and second in less than six months. Of Thank U, Next’s starting unit sum, 116,000 were in album sales. Thank U, Next, released on Feb. 8 through Republic Records, is Grande’s fourth Billboard 200 No. 1. It also launches with the biggest streaming week ever for a pop album. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 23-dated chart (where Thank U, Next debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Wednesday, Feb. 20 (a day later than usual, owed to the U.S. Washington’s Birthday holiday, often referred to as Presidents’ Day, on Feb. 18). Grande’s Fourth No. 1 Album: It follows Sweetener (which debuted atop the list dated Sept. 1, 2018), My Everything (Sept. 13, 2014) and Yours Truly (Sept. 21, 2013). Grande ties Taylor Swift for the second-most No. 1s among women this decade, trailing Lady Gaga, with five leaders since 2010. Two No. 1s in Less Than Six Months: Thank U, Next opens at No. 1 less than six months after Grande last topped the chart, with Sweetener, on the Sept. 1, 2018-dated chart. That span of five months and 22 days is the shortest gap between new No. 1s on the Billboard 200 for a woman since 1974-75, when Olivia Newton-John waited just five months and three days between the first weeks at No. 1 for If You Love Me Let Me Know (Oct. 12, 1974) and Have You Never Been Mellow (March 15, 1975). Both titles spent one week at No. 1. Grande’s accumulation of her two latest No. 1s is the fastest since K-pop group BTS notched its first two No. 1s in a little over three months just last year (Love Yourself: Tear on June 2, 2018 and Love Yourself: Answer on Sept. 8, 2018). In 2017, rapper Future nabbed an unprecedented pair of back-to-back new No. 1s in successive weeks (with his self-titled album March 11 and HNDRXX on March 18). Biggest Week for a Pop Album in Over a Year: As Thank U, Next starts with 360,000 units, the set earns the biggest week for a pop album in over a year. The last pop set to tally a larger week was Swift’s Reputation, which began at No. 1 on the chart dated Dec. 2, 2017 with 1.24 million units earned. Thank U, Next also scores the biggest week for an album by a woman since reputation. Thank U, Next has the largest week of any album since Oct. 13, 2018, when Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V bowed at No. 1 with 480,000 units. Largest Streaming Week for a Pop Album & Any Album by a Woman: Of Thank U, Next’s starting unit sum of 360,000 units, 228,000 are in SEA units. That latter sum translates to a whopping 307 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs during the tracking week. That’s a remarkable sum considering most-heavily-streamed albums are hip-hop sets. (Of the top 20 largest-streaming weeks ever for an album, Thank U, Next is the only non-hip-hop title.) Thank U, Next easily sets the record for the largest streaming week for a pop album (beating the debut frame of Ed Sheeran’s ÷ [Divide] with 126.7 million on-demand audio streams for its songs; March 25, 2017) and the biggest streaming week for an album by a woman (surpassing the debut week of Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy with 202.6 million; April 21, 2018). Thank U, Next has the ninth-largest streaming week for an album overall, and the eighth-biggest debut week. Drake’s Scorpion remains the streaming record-holder among all albums, with 745.9 million on-demand audio streams registered for its songs in its debut week (July 14, 2018). (Scorpion actually has two of the top nine biggest weeks, as the album’s second-week streaming sum is the fourth-largest overall, with 391 million.). At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack steps 5-2 with 49,000 units (up 31 percent). The set is basking in the glow of Gaga’s performance of the album’s “Shallow” on the Feb. 10 Grammy Awards, where the song also won a pair of trophies (including one presented during the CBS broadcast: best pop duo/group performance). Another soundtrack, Bohemian Rhapsody, rebounds to its peak position on the Billboard 200, as it zooms from No. 11 to No. 3 with 48,000 units (up 84 percent). The album’s parent film of the same name was released on DVD and blu-ray on Feb. 12, thus stirring interest in the movie’s soundtrack with consumers. (The movie was already available on digital home video.) A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s Hoodie SZN falls to No. 4 on the new Billboard 200 after three nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 with 43,000 units (down 7 percent) Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys rises 6-5 with 39,000 units (up 10 percent) Travis Scott’s Astroworld descends 4-6 with 37,000 units (down 3 percent) 21 Savage’s I Am > I Was tumbles 2-7 with nearly 37,000 units (down 8 percent) and Drake’s Scorpion is steady at No. 8 with 35,000 units (up 4 percent). Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour rides its pair of Grammy Award wins on Feb. 10 to a return to the top 10, as the set re-enters the chart straight in at No. 9 with 35,000 units (up 524 percent). Of that sum, 20,000 were in album sales -- a gain of 735 percent. Golden Hour won Grammy Awards for album of the year and best country album, while its songs “Butterflies” and “Space Cowboy” also took home trophies, for best country solo performance and best country song, respectively. Musgraves performed the album’s “Rainbow” on the Grammy Awards broadcast and also took part in an all-star tribute performance to Dolly Parton. (“Rainbow” is now being promoted as Musgraves latest single at country, adult pop and adult contemporary radio stations.) Golden Hour debuted and peaked at No. 4 last April. Closing out the new top 10 on the Billboard 200 is Meek Mill’s Championships, which falls 7-10 with 34,000 units (down 2 percent).

Ariana's album isn't very pop is it? It’s definitely pop, it’s just not 2011 Katy Perry-esque bubblegum pop.

Kacey Musgraves, Lady Gaga, Brandi Carlile & More Earn Grammy-Fueled Gains on Billboard 200
2/18/2019 by Keith Caulfield
Kacey Musgraves, winner of the awards for Album Of The Year and Best Country Album for 'Golden Hour;' Best Country Song for 'Space Cowboy;' and Best Country Solo Performance for 'Butterflies,' poses in the pressroom during the 61st Annual Grammy Award at Staples Center on Feb. 10, 2019 in Los Angeles.
Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour album rides its pair of Grammy Award wins on Feb. 10 to a return to the top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart. The set re-enters the chart dated Feb. 23 straight in at No. 9 with 35,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending Feb. 14 (up 524 percent), according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 20,000 were in album sales -- a gain of 735 percent.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Feb. 23-dated chart (where Golden Hour returns to the top 10 and Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Wednesday, Feb. 20 (a day later than usual, owed to the U.S. Washington’s Birthday holiday, often referred to as Presidents’ Day, on Feb. 18).
Golden Hour won Grammy Awards for album of the year and best country album (both trophies were presented on-air during CBS’ live broadcast of the show), while its songs “Butterflies” and “Space Cowboy” also took home two awards, for best country solo performance and best country song, respectively. Musgraves performed the album’s “Rainbow” on the Grammy Awards and also took part in an all-star tribute performance to Dolly Parton. (“Rainbow” is now being promoted as Musgraves’ latest single at country, adult pop and adult contemporary radio stations.) Golden Hour debuted and peaked at No. 4 last April.
In total, Musgraves earned an increase of 414 percent in overall equivalent album units across all of her albums -- rising to 40,000 earned in the week ending Feb. 14 (up from 8,000 the previous week). Her album sales climbed 639 percent to 22,000 (up from 3,000), while her digital song sales jumped 926 percent to 28,000 (up from 3,000).
In terms of U.S. streams, Musgraves’ catalog of songs vaulted 234 percent in on-demand streams (both audio and video), rising to 23.9 million for the week (up from 7.1 million).
Back on the Billboard 200, there are a number of other albums that are likely benefitting from Grammy Awards-related activity. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born soundtrack zips 5-2 with 49,000 units (up 31 percent). The set is basking in the glow of Gaga’s performance of the album’s “Shallow” on the Grammy Awards, where the song also won a pair of trophies (including one presented during the CBS broadcast: best pop duo/group performance).
Grammy nominee and performer Post Malone climbs 6-5 with beerbongs & bentleys (39,000 units; up 10 percent). Drake, who won the Grammy for best rap song (“God’s Plan”), which was presented on-air, sees his Scorpion album gain by 4 percent (holding at No. 8 with 35,000 units).
Cardi B, who performed on the show and made Grammy history as the first solo woman to win the best rap album award, climbs 17-13 with her winning album, Invasion of Privacy (27,000 units; up 18 percent).
Performer and three-time winner Brandi Carlile surges back onto the chart with her album of the year-nominated By the Way, I Forgive You. The set (which won best Americana album, while its song “The Joke” won two trophies) vaults back onto the tally at No. 22 with 20,000 units (up 897 percent). Of that sum, 15,000 were in album sales (up 1,054 percent).
Also in the top 40 of the Billboard 200, H.E.R.’s self-titled album, which won the best R&B album trophy, rises 73-23 with 20,000 units (up 91 percent). The set’s song “Best Part” also won best R&B performance.
