This song makes me feel good. You know that first family road trip to Missouri that I was rambling on about earlier? This was the first song I ever learned to sing along to. My brother and I learned the lyrics to the chorus while we were riding along through Indianapolis in the back of the old Pontiac Sunbird on the way home from the trip. Burnt. The f**k. Out. This song has been ground to paste. I used to enjoy it, back when it was played in moderation, but it's been greatly overexposed since the finale of The Sopranos. Not coincidentally, I never watched The Sopranos because people wouldn't shut up about it. Speaking of TV shows that people won't shut up about, thank God that Breaking Bad didn't ruin "Baby Blue" by Badfinger, and thank God that Game Of Thrones won't have a popular song to ruin. #33
Waiting For A Girl Like You Foreigner
craziaskowboi - 10 Foreigner had their hearts ripped out by that chart run. Only Missy Elliott would understand their pain. At least "I Want To Know What Love Is" made it to #1 a few years later. I like Toto. They have a style that I've always enjoyed. Shortly before the band was formed, several of the band members were session musicians for other star musicians in the mid- to late 1970s. For example, you can hear David Paich, David Hungate and Jeff Porcaro creating the Toto sound (proto-Toto?) in this song, which is quite possibly my favorite song of the 1970s (if not this, then "Sundown" by Gordon Lightfoot): It's no coincidence that this song and "Self Control" are Laura Branigan's two biggest hits. This one isn't quite on the level of "Self Control" for me, which is one of my absolute favorites of the 1980s, but it's nonetheless in lofty company. This is another song I remember from my fourth birthday. I have no idea how I have any recollection of my fourth birthday at all, but I do. My mother started the tradition of making homemade lasagna for my birthday that year, and I remember getting dressed up like The Count to go trick-or-treating. This was also one of six songs that I remember hearing that evening while I was putting my costume on. Here are the other five: 1. "You Can Do Magic" - America 2. "Steppin' Out" - Joe Jackson 3. "Who Can It Be Now?" - Men At Work 4. "Rock This Town" - Stray Cats 5. "Should I Stay Or Should I Go" - The Clash To this day, I enjoy all six songs to some degree, but I especially love "Eye In The Sky" and the first two on the list above. Poor Jenny. Her parents probably had to change their phone number. Speaking of songs with phone numbers for titles, 853-5937 just doesn't have quite the same ring to it, does it? (Pun possibly intended.) I used to hate this song, but it's grown on me over time. The Motels had two #9 hits, both of which I love. They have a knack for making songs that sound bittersweet and dreamy. I've always loved the energy in this song. It's one of the first 20 or so songs to take a spot in my memory bank. This goes back to that first Missouri road trip again. In fact, it wasn't long after singing along to "Abracadabra" in Indianapolis that my brother and I danced along to this song (still buckled up) in the backseat of the Sunbird as we continued east out of Indianapolis toward Ohio. I'll never forget watching our silhouettes move on the backs of the front seats as night fell with the 18-wheeler behind us shining its headlights straight into the back window. We wuz buggin' out in the backseat! Loverboy could be the most underrated rock band of the 1980s. My favorite of theirs is "Hot Girls In Love," and "Lovin' Every Minute Of It" and "Turn Me Loose" are great too. As for this song, it's the perfect song to start off every weekend! WOOOO! PARTY! I just had a random thought: If Nickelback wrote and performed this song, then everybody would trash it for its lyrics and the way they're half-sung. In spite of that double standard, it's a fun song, and it deserved to be one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. This is a great song for road trips! The pace of the song just makes you want to keep going and going and going! And you know a song is great when people of ALL ages can dance to it! In fact, the only song by The Cars that I like better than this is "Drive," which was my #1 on the 1984 rankdown. They have lots of great songs, though. In fact, I heard "Bye Bye Love" last night, and it was awesome! That song almost never gets played on the radio! Sweeet! Blue-eyed soul. Smoove!

God, what u doin "Private Eyes" was the only song that missed that I actually fully expected to see in the top ten. "Let's Groove" was a song I was rooting for to make the top ten more than anything, but I wasn't optimistic about its chances, and I hate that I was right to be pessimistic. 1 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 7 13 | 16 | 23 | 38 How did "Hurts So Good" make the top ten? lol, that's so random. "Eye of the Tiger" making the top ten is also very surprising. But hey, six of my top seven made the top ten, and I think that every song remaining is at least solid, so I'm cool with it.

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 7 - 9 11 - 14 33 - 42
"Hurts So Good" is one of those songs that have special meaning for me because it reminds me of happy times: going to amusement parks when I was a kid and that song was played all the time, so I ranked accordingly.
I bet it's not a popular opinion, but "Edge of Seventee"n overstayed. Stevie has better songs.
With 6 of top 10 left, I can't complain.

This is one of my least favorite songs of hers. So many great album tracks. This song only makes me wish for Beyoncé instead.

20. Only The Lonely (50): Mmmm.... This should've traded places with Harden My Heart. I do like the vocals and dark vibe of this one, but the overall melody isn't as good as it could. Overstayed.
19. Young Turks (39): A strong song by Rod Stewart with pretty good melody and production. Despite my ranking it in the 30s I don't mind seeing it this high.
18. Hold Me (11): I LOOOOVE the smooth vibe of this song, its musicality (guitars, piano, drums), the multi-layered vocals... It's one of my favorite sunset songs and in my top 5 Fleetwood Mac 80s songs. Was hoping to see it around the top 10, but good to see it this high anyway.
17. Heat of the Moment (6): I've always loved the epicness of this song. Great production, melody, vocals, all I need for a good 80s song. I was afraid this was going to be even lower, so I'm pleasantly surprised at this high ranking.
16. Working for the Weekend (53): FINALLY!!! I mean, it's a pretty decent rock-pop song, but this wasn't ever a big hit back home or a song with good recurrent airplay, so I don't have any emotional attachment to it and I just find it a bit too generic and average to make it to the top 20 in this RD....
15. Centerfold (16): Almost Perfect Ranking! My favorite JGB song, and among my favorite party rock songs of the 80s. Another good track of my road trip soundtracks, too.
14. Shake It Up (13): Almost Perfect Ranking! I was hoping this'd make the top 10. One of my favorite Cars songs and one of my favorite high-energy pop songs of the 80s. That video was very popular, and the song was a yearend top 30 back home -with pretty good recurrent airplay as well.
13. Let's Groove (32): I really liked this song back in the day. A yearend top 35 and a song with good recurrent airplay back home. My second favorite from EW&F (after Boogie Wonderland). Starting with this song, I had a hard time ranking the next 15 songs or so. Very close in points.
12. Our Lips Are Sealed (30): I do like this quite a bit, but my love for Vacation is just far greater....
11. Private Eyes (36): Good pop song, with those classic claps :) For quite some time, I mixed this up with Kiss on my List, though. In any case, glad to see their better song made the top 10 :)
Pretty good top 10!!! I have left: 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 (7 top 10s! :) ) 15, 21, 25
A bit surprised at my #25 still around I assumed my #15 and 21 would be in the top 10. I do like all these songs quite a bit anyway :)

Creme of the crop before the crown songs. These are all stellar songs.
#20. Only The Lonely - The Motels This is a great song. The Motels were considered a New Wave band, but this had more of a smooth Sade vibe. This one also got KLOS and KROQ airplay.
#19. Young Turks - Rod Stewart Another one of those great story telling songs. If you view the MV you'll recognize a very young E.G.Daily. She was in Valley Girl and Summer School before launching her own music career. She tried to revive it a few years back by showing up on one of those America's got talent shows. She also in Rob Zombie flicks. I'm a fan.
#18. Hold Me - Fleetwood Mac One of my favorite Fleetwood Mac that isn't sung by Stevie Nicks. It was Christie and Lindsey duo vocals. Mostly the reason I love this song. Also makes my top 100 of 1982.
#17. Heat Of The Moment - Asia A bit surprising but awesome to see it reach this high. This was 80's hard rock. Only back then it was referred to as Album Rock. "Only Time Will Tell" also reached the top 20 in 1982.
#16. Working For The Weekend - Loverboy More album rock in the top 20. This is awesome. I love seeing hard rock songs make it this high on this pop rank downs.
#15. Centerfold - The J. Geils Band A yes. The song my Mom didn't like me to sing a long to. This made it seem bit taboo and I searched it even more. Only I didn't have to search too hard for it was all over the radio and MTV. I learned to whistle because of this song. true story. Long live 1982.
#14. Shake It Up - The Cars I always get so close with my #1 songs. No surprise here. Its A Cars song and sung by Ric Ocasek. Since my favorite is "Let's Go" by Ben Orr the flipside would have to be "Shake It Up". If you really listen to the song it sounds like no other and no other song ever came close to sounding like it again. This was the genius behind Ric Ocesek. His quirky Elvis -like vocals made it even more unique. It's great to see so many high ranks for the song. This is also my favorite MV of all time.
#13. Let's Groove - Earth, Wind & Fire Again. My favorite by this band. The robot vocoders in intro reminds me of "Freak A Zoid" from Midnight Star.
#12. Our Lips Are Sealed - The Go-Go's The one that started it all for the band. File this one under "Ultra catchy girly New Wave"
#11. Private Eyes - Daryl Hall & John Oates This duo was the 80's. I kept this one in 1981, but it's great to see it show up soooooooo high.

11, 12, 20, 31, 36, 48, 51, 62, 65, 70. I have nothing left in my top 10, but nothing left in my bottom 30 either. I don't dislike any of the songs left, but my biggest favorites are all gone. What to make of that?

A few other songs from 1982 that were hits back home :
- Paperlate (Genesis): Another yearend top 40 song back home. My favorite Genesis song before the Invisible Touch era-I really liked the trumpet and drum sounds.
- Athena (The Who): Another yearend top 40 back home, although it hasn't maintained much recurrent airplay. A strong prog-rock track.
- Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie): Interestingly, this song wasn't as big in 1981-82 as it was in the early 90s, following the popularity of Ice, Ice Baby, and a wave of nostalgia that led to radio stations putting back in rotation a few songs of the 80s or even 70s. It's become one of my top 5 Queen songs -and I still have a great appreciation to the Annie Lennox & David Bowie version live tribute to Freddie Mercury (which made it to my personal chart in 1992)
- Designer Music (Lipps Inc.): Another 45 RPM I played a lot. I love the music of this one, the use of strings, percussion and keyboard were right upon my alley. It was a hit back home and one of my favorites of 1982, that I kept playing for many years :)
- Crazy Music (Ottawan): This was the follow-up to Hands Up, and although not as successful, it was still a hit back home. Another RPM I owned and played a lot. Another catchy, bubbly disco tune that like HU always put a smile in my face :) T
- Let's Go Dancing (Ooh, La, La, La) (Kool and the Gang): Another Dee-Lite 45 RPM that my brother bought :) following the success of this song back home.I did like the reggae party vibe -including the trumpet sounds
- Chequered Love (Kim Wilde): The follow-up to Kids in America was another hit back home, with good recurrent airplay. I loved the high-energy rock pop vibe of this song, same as with KIA or Vacation. Another good song attached to vacation days back home :)
- Words (Missing Persons): This was a big hit back home, with good recurrent airplay, and with a video that also had very high rotation. For some reason, this was often played at the beginning of transmission of a TV station, so I have very clear memories of those times waiting for the 15-minute music video show at the beginning of the TV transmission every day during vacations :)
- Machinery (Sheena Easton): This was my favorite Sheena Easton song of 1982 :) A minor hit back home, and a song my mom liked quite a bit. I also like this slightly different type of vocal and music style for Sheena. Plus I really liked that video!
- Hold On (Santana): Another song with good childhood memories -including from school. I loved the nostalgic beat, vibe, the sort of similar intro to Ride Like The Wind, and of course the guitar bridge by virtuoso Carlos Santana! A hit back home this year, too.

Final Thoughts
When I launched the Billboard 1984 Rankdown (first as only "1984" which initially caused some confusion on whether it was a music rankdown or something to do with the George Orwell novel) on December 20, 2017 I really had no intent of doing every year of the 1980's. I started with 1984 because for me that is the most epic year of the 1980's as far as music is concerned. I did intend on moving along to 1983 once 1984 was done but much to my chagrin that got snatched up by another member (who has since vanished) and so I decided to move along to another favorite year of mine: 1988.
After thinking about it for a bit I decided to go ahead and do every 80's year and switched gears and started with 1985 instead. 1986 followed, then 1987, changed gears again with 1983, then 1988 and 1989 before moving on to the early years of the decade with 80-82 following. In hindsight I would have loved to have started with 1980 and progressed through the decade which would have been a cool way of really getting a feel for how the sound of the 80's changed as the years went on.
C'est la vie.
So here we are then at the final Top 2. Well, sort of, I do plan on doing a Top 100 of the 80's as many of you know, but that is more of a bonus rankdown than anything. The official Billboard lists end here folks. Thank you to all who participated (and those that didn’t but followed along). All of your contributions and comments have been wonderful to read. It's been a lot of fun, lots of work, but still a lot of fun and with this rankdown series I feel that I have left a bit of a legacy on this forum. Well, that's debatable I guess. lol
With that said here we go with the final Top 2.

Don't You Want Me The Human League
Total Points: 2158
Billboard Hot 100: 1(3)
Billboard Top 100 of 1982: 6
From: Dare
"Don't You Want Me" was released in November of 1981, but did not gain traction in the US until March of 1982 when it entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 86. It peaked at No. 1 the week of July 3rd and would remain at the summit for 3 weeks.
The video for the song was filmed near Slough, Berkshire, during November 1981 and has the theme of the filming and editing of a murder-mystery film, featuring the band members as characters and production staff.
This placed inside the Top 25 on every list and four of us grab perfect ranks, congratulations to Butterflies & Hurricanes , Red , newpower and myself.

Hope you enjoyed the rankdown!
Thanks for participating and for all the wonderful conversation that took place about this awesome year in music!
Moving along to the Top 100 of the 1980's. I'm taking a break from this for a while and that list is a doozy so there will be more to come concerning a submission deadline. Thinking sometime in June.

I'm kind of glad you went on ahead and didn't end with 1989, because that would have been such a downer of a year to end on, lol...especially with 1982 just being an all-around better year for the chart, anyway. My surprise is much less pronounced that "Edge of Seventeen" didn't win, given the growing backlash the song received as the thread went along. My surprise is now focused on "Don't You Want Me" winning by such a large amount. I actually thought "Tainted Love" would win when Stevie went out. Not complaining, though, it's the second year in a row where my #1 won, and, unlike 1981, it was a clear tier above the rest of the chart. Deep breaths, everyone...it's time for the really hard one.
