I lost two top 10's in this sorry set of songs. I'll come back to some later, but first. You all are a lost case when it comes to Rick Springfield. Even that #13 rank is weak compared to my #2. At least the 80's audience got it right.  Rick makes 7 appearances in my own 1982 YE Top 100. Count them SEVEN.  This is One of my favorite songs in the entire music history.

Even if he wasn't, this song would still be a classic to me, and it's not even my favorite of his. My favorite of his is "Lady Love Me (One More Time)," which would have been in my Top 5 on the 1983 rankdown if it was included. Add in "Give Me The Night," and you have my Holy Trinity of early-1980s jazz-influenced soul.

I remember this song from the first family road trip that I remember. We traveled to Missouri to visit my extended family. That was when I learned what a grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt and cousins are. This was also the same year that I learned all 50 states and their capitals, so it was neat to travel outside of Pennsylvania through Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to Missouri, though all the states were much larger than they looked on my puzzle map. I initially forgot about West Virginia, though, because I-70 just clips the northern panhandle. Anyway, "You Should Hear How She Talks About You" was one of the songs on my memory "soundtrack" from that road trip, which is why I remember it so fondly. I also like the chord structure in this song, especially the sudden change from the pre-chorus to the chorus, and the saxophone solo in the bridge is sexy as hell too!

This is my favorite song from this band. It's not as folky as there other well known hits.

This is pretty decent. I prefer Doobie Brothers music.

#48. Somebody's Baby - Jackson Browne
My favorite Jackson Browne song. Love the throw back sound. All songs featured in 'Fast Times At Ridgmont High" should get top 40 treatment by default.

#47. Freeze-Frame - The J. Geils Band
Now you people are starting to piss me off. Love this band and song. This is pure fun from intro to outro.

#46. Turn Your Love Around - George Benson
I didn't even recall this song except when it was performed on Solid Gold. Sounds like watered down Shalamar.

#45. You Should Hear How She Talks About You - Melissa Manchester
Something about her classic Solid Gold performance makes me love this song even more. I love the little spoken part near the end right when she goes WHOA.... and breaks into that final chorus.

#44. Think I'm In Love - Eddie Money
I love this song. Eddie was one of those Poprock artists who easily fit into hard rock radio format. This one and "Shaken" are my favs.

#43. Open Arms - Journey
Journey's most epic Power ballad missing the top 40 not alone the top 10 where it should be is the reason there are no ore pop ballads in that HOT 100 thing.

#42. Trouble - Lindsey Buckingham
This one always struck me as a bit cheesy, but I love chessy. Especially 80's cheesy.

It took me 60+ reveals to lose my first top 20, so hey, I'll take that...but I wasn't expecting "Caught Up in You" to be the first. (Actually, the top 20 I expected to lose first is still in, somehow.)

Starting to lose some songs I really care about now. "Abracadabra" did about as well as I thought it would. On the other hand, I was hoping "Rosanna" would be able to make it a little bit further.

I like every song that is left to some degree. Somehow, only 2 songs remain outside of my top 40. These are my #43 and #47. And my #47 has grown on me since I did my ranking so I am glad that it is still in the mix even though it's my lowest remaining.

I lost a couple of top 10's but I have to admit things are getting really tough now. Seven of these songs make my own top 100 of 1982. I was sooooooooooooo Poptart back then.

#40. Hot In The City - Billy Idol
This is a good slot. Very melodic song. Funny thing is my favs "White Wedding" and "Dancing With Myself" didn't make the year end lists.

#39. Abracadabra - Steve Miller Band
One of my favorite songs of 1982. I love this song back then. In fact my favorite songs were actually the big Party rock songs of that year. This was Steve Miller's huge comeback hit...and then there was none.

#38. Caught Up In You - 38 Special
I knew I would be the starr ranker for this southern rocker. Anotherone of my favs. I was really into Casey Kasem's Am top 40 by now. I would rush home after church just to catch the last hour of the show where I could find this song. The best .38 Special song with one of the best guitar solo fade outs.

#37. Don't Stop Believin' - Journey
The iconic Journey song out before the top 30. The #1 digital download song until Imagine Dragons came and f u c k ed up rock music forever. Anyway some of you probably ranked that Glee version instead of the real thing, cuz that's the only explaination I have to this missing the top 20 on this RD.

#36. Do You Believe In Love - Huey Lewis and the News
Its great to see this band get a better treatment here that they did in past rank downs. There is another song on "Picture This" called "Workin' For A Livin" Huey does a mean harmonica on that one.


#35. Love Is In Control (Finger On the Trigger) - Donna Summer
This one was alright. She never again equaled the success of "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls". I did enjoy the "The Wanderer" tho.

#34. Leather And Lace - Stevie Nicks with Don Henley
I gave this the lowest ranking. I didn't find it half as exciting as I did her duet with Tom petty and The Heartbreakers.

#33. Waiting For A Girl Like You - Foreigner
This is the only Foreigner Power ballad I liked. The rest were cheesy, but this one still felt like rock. It even got airplay on KLOS.

#32. Physical - Olivia Newton-John
Unlike Billboard this was a hit for me for 1981. It felt a bit out of place for 1982, but I still found a slot for it in the top 20.

#31. Rosanna - Toto
Another classic Toto song. Just outside my top 40. I kinda put it on the sidelines after "Africa" was released, but its still a good listen

40. Hot In The City (28): I LOVE the intro. It was very popular back home, used in several TV ads, too. The poppier, synth side of this worked pretty well for Billy. One of my favorites from him.

39. Abracadabra (18): This was a big hit back home --yearend top 10 big! I had the 45 RPM, which I played quite a bit, as my brother and I really liked this song. I really liked its cool synth vibe as well as that great guitar display in the bridge. Wish this had made the top quarter of this RD! Btw, Sugar Ray's cover was a minor hit back home, I think primarily based off nostalgia of end of century

38. Caught Up In You (56): I think this was a first listen for me. I liked its rock energy and good harmonies. Don't mind it being this high.

37. Don't Stop Believin' (5): There you go, my first top 10 loss!!!! But really??!! This is classic 80s! The intro, the crescendo in the music including the different unique piano and guitar sounds, the vocals, the melody, etc. It's one of those songs that became more classic with time, but happened before the 00s... its popularity grew by the end of the decade and throughout the 90s. I know some people think it's overplayed, but that shouldn't take away from its quality IMO... Far too low for this great song

36. Do You Believe In Love (51): In the upper tier of Huey Lewis's songs for me- just not a candidate for top 40 of this year.

35. Love Is In Control (45): Not as strong as her classics, but a nice pop bop anyway. The robot vocals sound cheesy now, but at some point they sounded cool I still appreciate its music, beat, different types of background vocals, and of course her dynamic vocals. She managed to have a yearend top 20 back home with this one, although its recurrent airplay hasn't been that impressive

34. Leather and Lace (52): Nice vocals and overall romantic and tender vocals. Just like DYBIL, it's just a bit too simple to make it to my top 40 this year.

33. Waiting for a Girl Like You (41): I've always liked the melody, melancholic but smooth vibe of this song, and great vocals. Pretty good soundtrack for sunset, and a song with good recurrent airplay back home. Fair ranking here.

32. Physical (27): Yay!! After I saw where Ebony and Ivory ended in this RD, I was afraid that this song would suffer a similar fate. I'm glad she survived and managed to reach the top third. It made the top 15 of 1981 and top 3 of the Summer of 1982. Personally, it's not in my top 5 songs from ONJ, but I still liked it. I remember this one being one of the first 45 RPM that I chose and bought :) and I still have a soft appreciation to it, especially liking the music in the bridge and her great vocals --plus the fun and steamy video...

31. Rosanna (19): Another big hit back home that made the yearend top 15, and had pretty good recurrent radio and TV airplay. Toto was one of my brother's favorite bands, and I went along with the ride. I liked the synths and vocals of this song quite a lot, as well as the change in the beats in the chorus, with the toned down vocals that give room to the brass-supported energetic section. Good to see this in the top 1/3, although I was hoping to see them a bit higher.


This is a solid top 30!! Although I'm a bit surprised that Go-Go's outperformed Stevie in this RD.
