LOL - yeah kind of my point
Another word like "iconic" or "signature" or "one hit wonder" that has meanings based on who is using them

I feel like the only reason 7 Rings even hit #1 was because Ariana was extremely popular at the time and had a TON of promo for it. Uhm that's sort of how the charts work, or do you think Drake got all his #1's because he delivered musical masterpieces? Nice for What - masterpiece IMF, GP - Events

Even a new song by Pink can't touch a 4 month old song by Gaga <3 I think you spoke to soon.

As someone who is now getting a bit older and prefers country music and perhaps Adult Top 40, I'd consider an event single to be something that moved the needle for me. I enjoy all types of music, but don't go out of my way to listen to everything on the chart believing that if something is popular it will make it's way to me somehow. That being said, this is an opinion of a chart watcher who doesn't follow every single released by R&B artists or listens to Top 40 all that much. Maybe this is interesting to some:
Perfect - This was a huge song and something I would consider that moved the needle everywhere. It was song of the year on many charts even.
Havana - Yep, this was a big song.
God's Plan - I guess this was big. I know it was a long time #1, but I feel like Drake is a big name whose music skews mostly to one demo only. I know the song and can sing some of the words, so this was big enough where I would consider it an event.
Nice for What - Nope
This is America - This was big everywhere. He hosted SNL which helped quite a bit and it was everywhere in the media. I don't personally feel like it's a great song but it was definitely an event.
Psycho - Nope
Sad! - Nope
I Like It - Nope
In My Feelings - I know this was song of the summer on Billboard, but I'm not even sure I've heard it.
Girls Like You - Obviously a huge song even before the Super Bowl. It's been on the radio forever and is still popular.
Thank U, Next - This was really big with the whole breakup and the night it was released was when Pete Davidson mentioned the breakup on SNL. The song itself doesn't seem that special, but it was an event and brought Ariana to the top.
Sicko Mode - This is kind of half and half I would say. I'm familiar probably due to longevity more than anything, but hasn't been in my face by any means.
Without Me - I think this is a big song. I'm not familiar with her work outside of the Chainsmokers song, so this was the song that brought her as a solo artist into my sphere of influence I'd say. It seems big.
Sunflower - Spiderman soundtrack and really catchy. This is still in progress of being big I think.
7 Rings - This is an event. It samples one of the most popular songs ever in a way that makes it seem familiar. People are talking about it.
I'm sure most people read this and think it's crazy, but honestly if a song isn't familiar to someone who is 40 (or any of their friends), I'm not sure how big of an event it is.

If only there was some way to actually survey everyone in the US to see what they're listening to and buying and streaming, beyond just the people here sharing anecdotally. And if only we could add up what all those people are doing and get some sense of what's actually a big song -- some way to figure out what's hot, maybe even get a list of the top 100 songs on a weekly basis. If only...

Plenty of Christian and country singles sell decently, but no one's going to say Thomas Rhett and For King & Country singles are "events" in the mainstream for the most part. It's not like "Look What You Made Me Do", which was all over media.

I agree with you on most of this. Except I don’t know Sicko Mode at all and barely know Without Me. And I’m not a Drake fan but In My Feelings was huge, even bigger than Gods Plan imo.

So what event single eventually became the signature song for an iconic artist?

So what event single eventually became the signature song for an iconic artist? In terms of relevancy to the previous posts? Call Me Maybe first comes to mind. Iconic artist wise? Depends on one's definition of iconic. I like to think of a song such as Thriller to be an example of that. An event single to me would be I'll Be Missing You. Also to some of the above posts regarding Sicko Mode; I have never heard the song outside of someone playing it once at my apartment. I'm not sure if it's less popular in Canada, but it is nowhere on the radio or in any discussion here. It's a very XO Tour Lif3 situation where it for some reason stays high on streaming for ages.

"I Will Always Love You"? "The Bodyguard" was a big deal, and that song was (is) huge and definitely became Whitney's signature.

I know I've asked this before, but what do folks here say is Rihanna's signature song? "Umbrella"? "We Found Love"? Maybe "Diamonds"?
Or, for that matter, Beyoncé's? "Crazy in Love" or "Single Ladies"?
Hell, what is Madonna's signature song? And would MJ's be "Billie Jean" or "Thriller"?

Funnily enough to first song I think when I think Rihanna is Love The Way You Lie. But I think Umbrella definitely solidified her as a singles artist.
