I'm not pleased that I lost my two remaining top 10s, but at least the winner will be in my top half.

Just reviewed the whole Rankdown and now we are in the top 5. This is a really good top 5. Take On Me might have been my number 1, so I'm rooting for that. You can't really go wrong with any of them as a winner.

Really thought beat it would make top 5, or at least over Billie Jean. Such a fun, addictive song.
But glad that EWTRTW didn’t make top 5, it’s good but overrated imo.
Really hope take on me wins, was so close to winning in most streaming songs RD, and better than all the remaining songs.

Not surprised at all about the top 5. It was a given that the big 3 (Michael, Madonna and Prince) will have songs in the top 5 (and it's good that it's only one from each one). The other 2 places are for two of the most recognizable 80s songs. All 5 songs have been overplayed to hell since the 80s... but in my opinion that's not an excuse to low rank a song.
I'm rooting for Take On Me or Sweet Dreams, but I think everybody knows what song is winning this.

15. Little Red Corvette (95): Sorry not sorry I was a tanker of this one. I did like this song back then, but not the point of reaching my top 10. I can see now that there is an extended version, which would've made me rank it a bit higher as the last minute or so is much more interesting than the first 3 minutes. Even with that extra minute, it would've been below Raspberry for me anyway 14. Tainted Love (49): Another great 1980s cover (although not as great as Bette Davis Eyes for me). Don't mind seeing it this high. 13. Call Me (16): YAS!! I was afraid this would leave much earlier considering that Rapture left eons ago. This is as good as a rock song can be. High intensity from the first second, with an in-crescendo verses and pre-chorus leading to an explosive chorus. Plus a sexy multi-lingual bridge. One of the reasons why I've been a Blondie fan since I was a kid. 12. Smooth Criminal (50): Another song that I found it hard to rank. It's by far my favorite off Bad, and I admit I should'e ranked it a bit higher. It's classic MJ with a late 80s sound, with great vocals and production. Great song. 11. Africa (27): My favorite Toto song, although Hold The Line and Roxanne are close... Still, the musicality and vocals make a great combination and one of those great examples of the variety of sounds and styles of the 1980s. 10. Don't You (64): YES, my only bottom half remaining leaves first! Despite my ranking, I do like the song quite a bit. Great intro, kinda double chorus, plus strong vocals, including those last-minute ad-libs. I still think there were much better songs to finish in the top 10, though... 9. Beat It (20): This is such a classic and a pretty good combination of pop and rock, with that unique intro and that great Eddie Van Halen guitar solo, plus the strong chorus. No complaints seeing this in the top 10. 8. Everybody Wants To Rule The World (30): YAY! My second lowest remaining song leaves! This is one of my favorite sunset songs, with such a melancholic vibe. Great production and music here. Still this was only my 5th highest 1985 song in this RD, so I think it overstayed a bit. 7. Another One Bites The Dust (24): This was the most improved song in this RD for me. It was the song that I had ranked outside the top 10 in an annual rankdown (#17) that made it the farthest in this decade RD. I think I re-appreciated it after watching BR. All and all it's good to see a Queen song in the top 10 so I won't complain. 6. Don't You Want Me (15): A great new wave song. Excellent melody, production, vocals and lyrics. A classic that deserved a top 10 placement :) Well, this didn't end up that bad: 1, 2, 4, 11, 25 I love all these songs, but of course I'd prefer one of my top 5s to win... Hope so!

So I got super duper busy the last few weeks and I couldn't participate as much as I wanted to... Still, I'll share a few more latin spotlights of the 1980s, now more in terms of HispaRock. LATIN SPOTLIGHT: SODA STEREO
Without a doubt the biggest group of the 1980s in Latin America came from Argentina, the 'rock trilogy' of Soda Stereo, with Gustavo Cerati (RIP) in vocals and guitar, Zeta Bosio in bass, and Charly Alberti in drums. Like Mecano in Spain, Soda started with silly pop / rock songs with little production value and silly lyrics that were primarily to have fun. Songs like Telekinesis, Te Hacen Falta Vitaminas (You're Missing Vitamins), Por Que No Puedo Ser Del Jet Set (Why Can't I Be Part of the Jet Set) were minor hits in 1985 from their self-titled album, all in the silly pop-rock vibe. However, when radios played their ballad Tratame Suavemente (Treat Me Softly), it clicked and became a bigger hit back home, and showed they had much more to offer... And they definitely did with their second album Nada Personal (Nothing Personal), which spawned two big hits in 1986: the folk-rock mid-tempo Cuando Pase El Temblor (When the Tremor Ends) (one of my personal favorite Spanish songs of the 1980s, as I loved the Andean rock fusion) and the more new wave and funky title track (among the top songs of the year back home) and a minor hit Juego de Seduccion (Seduction Game). All these songs had much more interesting lyrics, production, and melodies, whereas their The-Cure-influenced image helped them cement their identity. In 1987 they released the album Signos (Signs) and hell broke loose. They were EVERYWHERE. The first 3 singles of the album were among the biggest songs of the year (and arguably the decade). The first single Persiana Americana (American Blinds) with a more pop-rock vibe, was the song of the year back home and one of the most classic Latin rock songs. The second single was the title track, which showed much more mature sound, lyrics, and production --and also became a big hit. The third single, Profugos (Runaways), had a more funk rock vibe and for the first time incorporated female background vocals. 1987 was Soda Stereo's year. They had +15 songs played throughout the year. In addition to the first 3 singles off Signos, radios played 4 other songs off that album, 5 songs off Nada Personal, and a few songs of their 1987 live album Ruido Blanco (White Noise): the live (extended) version of Signos, the live medley of Te Hace Falta Vitaminas/Jet Set, and especially a completely new version (remix?) of Sobredosis de TV (TV Overdose), a song from their first album that in this new version became another big hit for the band (and another of my favorites): In 1988 they released Doble Vida (Double Life). Back home the lead single was Lo Que Sangra (En La Cupula) [What Bleeds (In The Dome)] that had a stronger production and more of a latin influence in the music with more percussion and horns. This became another big hit for them back home (a year-end top 5). The second single, Picnic En El 4to B (Picnic in the 4th B) was another hit for them, although not as strong as the first one. The third single, En La Ciudad De La Furia (In The City of Fury), was the only one to receive a video (it was the first single in Argentina)... it was less successful back home but with time it'd become the most remembered of the three, as it had a timeless rock ballad quality. Soda Stereo would release an EP in 1989, Languis, with just one new song Mundo de Quimeras with a Santana style of rock, that was kind of a flop back home... but they'd come back in 1990 with another classic. That'd be something for the 1990 RD though In any case, Soda Stereo was a fever like I've never seen back home, and it was really good to witness the evolution of the band and how they helped transform Latin rock forever. I had the pleasure to see Gustavo Cerati live in the early 2000s. My favorite Latin artist ever. It was such a pity to lose him so early, though. He had a lot more to give us.... RIP

LATIN SPOTLIGHT: LOS PRISIONEROS
Another trio that changed Latin rock was the Chilean band Los Prisioneros (The Prisoners), composed of Jorge González (vocals, bass), Claudio Narea (guitar) and Miguel Tapia (drums). They were quite famous for their unfiltered lyrics, and their strong stance against the dictatorial regime of Augusto Pinochet, whose government ordered TV shows and radio stations to not play their songs as they were seen as "dangerous" for the regime.
Their first mid-size hit came in 1986 with La Voz de los 80 (The Voice of the 80s), the title track of their debut album, which called for the new generation to wake up and leave the inertia of the 70s and stand up for their beliefs, under a rock beat
However, their next hit became one of the biggest songs of the decade, and a classic Latin rock hit: Sexo, a tune about objectification of women and commercialization of sex
Their next album, Pateando Piedras (Kicking Stones) cemented their status as one of the most promising Latin rock acts. It spawned 3 big hits with strong lyrics but much more polished production than in their debut album. The lead single, Por Que No Se Van (Why Don't They Leave), a more synth-and-bass type of song, became another big hit--this time they were singing about those talking about how the local culture was so bad compared to that of NY or Europe...)
The next single showed their best production and vocals to date, and an even bigger hit than the lead single. Muevan las Industrias (Get the Industries Moving) had a much more new-wave sound that served as background to lyrics talking about the closing of Chilean factories and increase of unemployment after the economic reforms of the late 70s/early 80s.
The third single El Baile de los que Sobran (The Dance of the Left-outs) was an even bigger hit, and one of the Latin rock classics. Another song with strong new-wave production and with even stronger lyrics, about the struggles of the poor to earn education just to being unable to get a job and opportunities --a theme that resonated across Latin America in the 80s.
Their next album, La Cultura de la Basura (The Garbage Culture), was released in 1987 primarily outside Chile as the band had shown their opposition to the reelection of the regime and suffered even more censorship. The lead single in Latin America, We Are Sudamerican Rockers, with its rock-n-roll style, was a minor hit, but its relevance is being the first video ever played in MTV Latin America in 1993.
The second single, Pa Pa Pa, with its more pop style, was a bigger hit. In a way these two songs were satires of the music scene in most of Latin America and how they were either trying to copy Anglo-Saxon music or not being vocal enough with their lyrics but just talking about peace and love...
Another single that was a mid-size hit was Maldito Sudaca (Damn 'South-American'), a musically interesting but slightly messy song, spoken from the perspective of a Spaniard that sees South Americans as the worst...
Sexo, El Baile de los Que Sobran, Muevan Las Industrias and Pa Pa Pa made my decade top 100 in Spanish. They will still produce another great album in 1990, but that's for another time...
