I am so sorry for taking so long to start this! I was so busy the last few weeks, and then when I did start revealing rankdowns again I had to prioritize the New Releases series because it's time-sensitive, and George Strait because that one had been sitting idle longer. Now this one's finally ready for its turn!!! Kanenrá:ke was able to sneak in a list in the meantime, giving us a 9th participant "Empty Arms" isn't bad or anything, but it was definitely a tad on the boring side. The choral background vocals made it a tad cheesy as well. It comes with a trio of painful top 5s from codyj100, 🌺CountryLineDancer, and taylor, but they were not enough to counteract the FIVE last place ranks that this got. Oddly enough, this did not end up being one of our most polarizing songs!

I feel like this one has a pretty great vocal from Reba! That was my biggest takeaway from this song. Overall I found this to be one that could either be really pretty or really boring depending on what mood I was in when I listened to it. It ended up being ranked in the #9 spot by the most people, with four or us finding room for it there, and it was in either #8 or #9 for the entire submission process.

"Good Friends" bows out next. This one feels a bit underwritten and short, but overall is pleasant enough. Reba totally butchers that high note in the bridge though 😂

I feel like I might have underrated "I Know I'll Have A Better Day Tomorrow", because listening to it just now I thought it sounded like a bit of a jam! I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it is our most polarizing song, considering how opposite my own feelings towards it have been on different listening occasions! 🌺CountryLineDancer loses his #1, while codyj100 and tim both lose their #10...

Ugh, I am so annoyed that this missed the top 5. The way the melody builds makes this sound like a quintessential Reba classic!! The lyrics also really make me feel things too. "Don't say goodnight, say good morning. And in the morning never say goodbye" is such a strong hook! On such an obscure album, I was not expecting anything to blow me away as much as this one did.

Ugh, taylor and Kanenrá:ke were really the agents of chaos in this rankdown... Way to tank all the best songs on the album!!! In the case of "Waiting For The Sun To Shine", this song was a frequent occupant of every spot in the top 3 for the entire rankdown, until the aforementioned duo, along with the help of codyj100 , nearly sent this song completely out of the top 5 at the last moment This song has a bit of familiarity among the group for being a song that Lee Ann Womack covered a couple decades later, which I am sure had a hand in a lot of the higher ranks for it. But it's certainly not the only reason, because this song has an overall really memorable melody! It's one of those songs that is so simple that you can't help but get it stuck in your head immediately when it comes on.

This is yet another song that I am not quite sure what I was thinking as I reflect on my rank... "Hold On" has a pretty memorable chorus, which should have automatically made it worthy of the top 5 on an album as filled with nondescript ballads as this one is! Oh well, in the end its final placement still manages to feel pretty fitting! Me bumping it a few spots higher wouldn't have changed the final outcome.

"Muddy Mississippi" is a SHOCKING story song, especially for its time period! A young woman grows up using a rope swing to jump and swim in the Mississippi River. Then she meets a boy and falls in love and convinces him to take her to New Orleans. Then she starts to fool around behind his back while he's working to provide for them. He finds out and leaves her. Then she realizes she's pregnant, and it is too much to bear on top of everything else, so she goes back to her childhood play area and hangs herself from the oak tree I can only imagine that the reason this song was originally scrapped from whatever album it was recorded for was to avoid unnecessary controversy, because this graphic portrayal of suicide would have been pretty unheard of coming from a woman in the '80s, lol. Also I'm surprised to see that this got so many high ranks after people made such a big deal of not wanting to rank mentions of suicide highly when we ranked Tim McGraw's "Kill Myself", lol. Or am I the only one who listened to the words for this? 😂

Or am I the only one who listened to the words for this? 😂 For me, the two songs are apples and oranges. The melody was the main thing that I paid attention to, but for instance, Faith’s “Why” explicitly tackles suicide, and arguably so does Martina’s “A Broken Wing.” The way “Kill Myself” was handled in Tim’s case just wasn’t up to par with these other three—for instance, the very title of Tim’s is off-putting from the very beginning, whereas there are other avenues the other three titles could go down. Hell, I thought “Muddy Mississippi” was gonna be some hokey-pokey song I would end up putting at #10 lmao
