"Better Off," the final collaboration (Vince Gill provides harmony vocals) and last album cut standing, lands in third place of the Slow Me Down rankdown, effectively making it a battle of the project's two single releases for the crown. This song is a bit of anomaly on the record because it stands out as being far more neo-traditional in sound than any of the other tracks, which led to a divisiveness in the ranks. Many loved it, as evidenced by it being the highest non-single, but it did get drug down from contending with either of the singles by racking up five bottom 2 ranks, including three #11s. On the other hand, it was bolstered by four #1 ranks, and eight additional top 5s. Lyrically, the song is intended as a pick me up for a girl who doesn't realize that her man walking out on her is actually a blessing in disguise. The neo-traditional production on this track and Sara's vocal are just to die for, particularly on the old school wailed chorus that is elevated by Vince's harmonies. "So go on and get that suitcase And help him pack it up Girl, you ain't losing nothin' You don't need his kind of love Don't watch him as he's goin' It'll break your heart again And don't stand there waitin' with the door wide open Hoping he'll walk back in"

This was the song that I really couldn’t place. Almost redid my list and put at #1.

Unsurprisingly, the hit single and title cut from Slow Me Down reigns victorious, with a roughly 15-point gap between it and the runner-up, the ill-fated and barely charted second single, "Put My Heart Down." "Slow Me Down" marked the end of Sara's run at country radio, being her last top 20 hit on the charts. With its a moody and dark song driven by the plucked strings that stuck out as a rather unique production choice with Sara delivering some beautiful and powerful vibrato on the verses and then launching into an anthemic chorus. It is also memorable for its music video that has Sara slaying in a wedding dress and for having her co-lead be NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. "Put My Heart Down" was no slouch, however, as it frequently flirted with taking the crown away from the title track at times, but it ultimately saw its chances slip away as more submissions came in. Despite failing to ignite at country radio, this bop has some really unique lyrics, a bouncing melody, and some sweet vocal moments from Sara including some great big money high notes throughout. She performed the song on the TV series Nashville during its brief run as a single, as a duet with Will Chase. "Slow Me Down" received four #1 placements vs. three for "Put My Heart Down." All but four posters ranked SMD in their top 5, including a huge string of #2 ranks, but it did receive our final #11 remaining in the rankdown (sorry ClevelandRox, you tried). PMHD had no bottom 3 ranks at all, but its ranks weren't quite as top-loaded (with several in the 6-8 range), which led it to lag behind the lead single. "If all that's left to do is walk away Then, baby, I'm as gone as yesterday But if there's something you still need to say You need to say it now Hurry up and slow me down Slow me down"
"So pack up all your things and just leave some air to breathe A million toxic tears falling like rain 'round here This is the final hour The end of our story tonight And I don't wanna fight"

"Better Off" is so freaking perfect. Despite my #10 rank, I am not surprised to see it do well, nor am I disappointed to see it being the highest album track. This song totally deserves it! Similar to d3vin44, I had a lot of trouble placing this one, and it tends to fluctuate in terms of how I feel about it in comparison to the rest of this perfect album. "Put My Heart Down" is so catchy, and should have been a much bigger hit. My #1 could have actually gone to like 8 different songs here, because this is such a strong album. That means that this song had a TON of worthy competition to even get as high as it did, so I am okay seeing it leave at #2. That second verse (the "This is the final hour...") part is one of my favorite lyrical and vocal moments on the entire album Of course totally happy although not surprised seeing "Slow Me Down" in the #1 spot!!! This song is amazing, and especially stands out for that pizzicato-string-driven musical arrangement. It is such an eerie, ethereal sound, and Sara really showed off her artistic innovation by arranging it that way. Thanks for another great rankdown .indulgecountry! I can't wait to see which one is next!!!

I was out of town during the final reveals for this so just catching up but overall the final two were as expected and the title track “Slow Me Down” has always been my favorite from the album so not all surprised by its well deserved win! Going into the top 5 I had hunch it might be a close one between #4 and #5 but I just wasn’t sure what two songs it would be...alas it ended up being “If I Run” and “Revival” which I knew were both well regarded from the fans. Now here’s the funny thing...living in Texas I often hear a lot of random songs but on this particular trip over last weekend I heard the original “Revival” as sung by the songwriter himself Radney Foster on the radio and really had to chuckle because when I heard it I was like “I KNOW THIS SONG!” Anyways it was a funny moment I had of which I wasn’t able to share until now lol. What I wasn’t expecting on seeing is that “Better Off” would be such a decisive top 3 contender and I was especially taken aback by some of the higher rankings especially from the likes of SHOOTER who placed it as his #1! When I first listened to this album I had mentioned to .indulgecountry that this was my favorite discovery so I’m thrilled to see it do as well as it did. Speaking of .indulgecountry thanks again for the hosting duties and we’re all looking forward to the next one!

I'll give you that I didn't mention if Flops has submitted (which is a given then that he hadn't but I digress) but I told you Jordy probably wouldn't even submit, so using our context clues...

The unconventional cover of "The Twelve Days of Christmas" never stood a chance and was the decisive last place in the Sara Evans Christmas rankdown. The listy track is not a song typically covered for holiday records, but Sara, with the help of her daughters Audrey and Olivia, turned in a well-sung rendition of this Christmas carol. It's not really a song that stands up well to repeated listens like some other standards, however, and this song became an easy last place for many (6 to be exact, just over half of the participants). It received two top 5 ranks though, from Cody Wants Out... and ClevelandRox.

Well, not the song I would have chosen; “12 Days of Christmas” is a ridiculous song, but it is also not too terribly over-covered, so Sara’s version is always good for a few listens when the season arrives. Her vocals are fun and the arrangement is well done. Plus the addition of her daughters actually helps give an air of novelty that helps it to feel less monotonous. I would rather we have lost something like “I’ll Be Home For Christmas”, which is so painful I literally do not even try to listen to it...

Next we reveal a Christmas song that is much more of a staple on holiday records. "O Come All Ye Faithful" was the only other contender for last place, but it didn't quite compete with the niche and polarizing nature of "12 Days." Still, it was not well-received among Sara's Christmas material and received mostly bottom 3 ranks, including a pair of #11s from bboat11 and Cody Wants Out....

Now that we got the bottom 2 out of the way, everything else until we reach the top 4 wound up within 11 points of each other, meaning that the arrangement of the middle part of this rankdown was very volatile throughout the submission process. "Winter Wonderland" slid to the bottom of that pack at the finish line, and despite being our first reveal to feature no #11s, it did have a majority of lower-half ranks. Three posters opted for a top 5 placement, but no one loses a #1... yet.

"I'll Be Home for Christmas" is the first reveal to lose a #1 rank, as born gets the dubious honors. For me, this song has always been tragically dreary and a chore to listen to in pretty much any incarnation ever, so it was an easy last-place for me. Sadly it did well enough to escape the bottom 3, but only just barely. bboat11 and Cody Wants Out... also lose bottom 2 ranks here, but most slotted this one right in the middle of their lists (except for the lone #1).
