The top 5 for the Born to Fly rankdown winds up being the first 5 songs on the album, 4 of which were the singles + "I Learned That from You" (the final album cut standing). Post top 5 predictions if you'd like! I'm going to predict we get a nice clean 5-4-3-2-1 elimination from them as well! 5. I Learned That From You 4. I Keep Looking 3. I Could Not Ask For More 2. Saints & Angels 1. Born To Fly

I would LOVE to see "I Could Not Ask For More" pull off the win here, if only because that one and "Born To Fly" are the only two singles from this album to have never won a rankdown, and I think "Born To Fly" has a really good chance of winning the overall 2001 year-end rankdown because it is so popular even among people who aren't a big fan of Sara's. It would be SO cool to see all 4 singles end up as rankdown winners at some point in time, and I'm not sure ICNAFM will get another shot!
Realistically tho, it will be the obvious title track winner...

Yay! I’m absolutely loving these results!
5- Saints and Angels 4- I Learned That From You 3- I Could Not Ask For More 2- I Keep Lookin 1- Born To Fly
Absolutely Ecstatic that “I Learned That From You” made it this far. I half expected it to be last because I also thought others may view it as boring.

"I Learned from You" was the clear standout album track for me, so I'm glad it managed to make its way into the top 5!

Sadly (but unsurprisingly) given some of the above comments, I'll have to break a few of y'all's hearts and reveal that "I Learned That from You" is the first to go in the top 5, leaving us with the four hit singles as the final four remaining in the Born to Fly rankdown. This beautiful and poignant ballad that finds the narrator reminiscing on a young love that didn't last actually wound up tying in overall points with the equally haunting "Why Should I Care," but won the tie-breaker due to higher top ranks. Still, the two were the clear front-runners when it came to the race for the top album cut, though neither came close to edging out any of the singles (there's a nearly 60-point difference between this and the single that comes in fourth place). d3vin44 is the next to lose his #1 rank, and almost half of us lose a top 5 here as well, though two posters do learn that their last place has been extinguished. "One night while the whole world was turnin' I left you a note And I told you that I'd always miss you And then I let you go"

A+ song! It KILLS me to have it in last place. This is why "You" needed to be included. "I Learned That From You" is a lovely song. Sara's vocals are so light and airy and perfect And how about those boomingly low D3s in the verses?! Your faves could never! (Unless one of your faves is Terri Clark or Reba...) I am a bit surprised to see this song outlast all the other album tracks. ALL of the album tracks are so perfect, and have people who love them, so the fact that this one managed to get the right mixture of high ranks to come out on top just feels so arbitrary to me. But, that is why this rankdown is so interesting! For me, as a huge Sara stan, this album is literally perfect from front to back, and my own ranking of the songs changes with the weather. But the album might not be quite so consistent to others. So this rankdown is the first time I am actually experiencing this perfect album from everyone else's perspective!

I originally ranked "I Learned That From You" at #4, and I realized I was doing my rankings from how I remember the album, back in 2001, and not how I actually feel about the album present day. This is THE song I most often revisit this album for. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! The subdued but amazing vocals are filled with so much emotion... Ugh. Beautiful.

The best album track hands-down for me! Glad to see it managed to out-last all the other. Now please let "Saints & Angels" be #4 because the other 3 are perfection

The final single from Born to Fly is the first to leave from the set of four. "I Keep Looking" is an uptempo jam driven by a groovy guitar and features a fun lyric and vocal performance about being unsatisfied with what you have and wanting something more. It was the only release from the album not to feature a music video, though it was still a smash hit at the time and solidified Born to Fly as Sara Evans' most successful era at country radio as her only album to score three top 10s 5s. The tune received three #1 ranks and only six posters who didn't rank it in their top 5, while being the only song in the rankdown not to receive a single bottom 3 placement from anyone. It is also notable for being the only single not to occupy the #1 spot during the submission process: it got as high as #2, but ultimately it landed in fourth place, though only two points behind the single that finished third! "When my low self esteem Needs a man loving me And I find me a perfect catch Then I see my friends Having wild weekends Then I don't want to get quite so attached"

I've always been able to "connect" with this song. Sooooo me. Here in Seattle, you would have thought this was the biggest hit of Sara's career. It was played so dang much, and I never got sick of it! lol

I do still think "I Could Not Ask For More" is most likely to leave next, although I would selfishly still like to see that one win the whole thing.

In keeping with the tracklisting order, the next song to fall just short of the top 2 is the second single from Born to Fly, Sara Evans' smash cover hit of Edwin McCain's "I Could Not Ask for More." She turns in a seductive and passionate vocal performance on this celebration of love that has become a wedding staple over the years. The memorable music video was shot in the beautiful White Sands National Monument in New Mexico. It received more #3 ranks than anything else by a landslide, so I suppose it seems fitting that this is exactly where it ended up. That said, it only came in above "I Keep Looking" by a two point margin, though it only had one bottom 3 ranking (from Kanenrá:ke). "These are the moments I thank God that I'm alive These are the moments I'll remember all my life I've got all I've waited for And I could not ask for more"

I used to enjoy “I Keep Looking” so much more when I was younger. Something about it didn’t age as well for me as the rest of the album did. I still love it to death because this whole album is literal perfection, but I couldn’t rank it as high now as I would have 10+ years ago. “I Could Not Ask For More” is just plain gorgeous.

And we have our winner! As several of you predicted... the end result is the title cut and biggest hit, Sara Evans' breakthrough smash and signature song, "Born to Fly"! The singles consistently held down the top 4 with ease ahead of the rest of the album, but while the other three hits all wound up within a 5-point margin of each other, the title track ultimately trounced the competition to come out on top with a near 40-point lead on the runner-up, "Saints & Angels." The uptempo fiddle-laden jam with its iconic Wizard of Oz themed music video about a young small town farm girl pining about getting out into the great big world started out strong with a couple #1 ranks and a lot of close calls, but then the back half of the submission process really sealed the deal as 11 of the last 14 lists received placed it at the top. Kanenrá:ke, austin, and bboat11 were the only posters not to place the song in their top 5, and then only two others didn't place it in their top 2! "Saints & Angels," a moody mid-tempo backed by piano touches on the human quality of imperfection from the perspective of a couple whose perseverance and love for one another overcomes any misfortunes they go through, wasn't without its fans though as it racked up the next-highest number of #1 placements (even though it was only 4 versus 13...) and even more #2 ranks (so its finish as the runner-up is more than justified!). It may not have been the biggest hit from the album, but it continues to prove itself as a fan favorite by once again besting two of its more successful singles. Ultimately though it also had a solid handful of lower ranks that helped weigh it down. "I've been tellin' my dreams to the scarecrow About the places that I'd like to see I say 'friend, do you think I'll ever get there?' Aww, but he just stands there smilin' back at me"
"These feet of clay They will not stray"

Thank goodness Born to Fly won! Saints and Angels is a bit overrated and nowhere near the quality of the other 3 singles from this record, imo. I would have been very disappointed had it won. Glad BTF won by a landslide though!

I mean it's hard to be mad when you love every track lol
But "You Don't" and "I Learned That From You" is still head and shoulders above everything else imo.

I’m happy with these results...really nothing too unexpected here. Born to Fly is definitely deserving of winning this one, but Saints & Angels will always hold a special place in my heart. I stumbled upon that song at a restaurant one night way back in the day and, not knowing what it was, went home and looked up the lyrics and my obsession with Sara Evans began.
Again, they totally nailed the singles with this one. I’m honestly confused how Saints & Angels missed the top ten when the others were all top five hits, but oh well. I think that Why Should I Care would have also been a big hit had it been released. I hadn’t listened to this album all the way through in a very long time, so thanks for hosting .indulgecountry and giving me a reason to listen again!
