It was a week ago today that Jason Aldean was named Artist of the Decade by the A.C.M.. Question is, who is your favorite Artist of the Decade?

14 people have voted in the poll so far and I'm literally the only one who has voted for more than 1 artist (which is an option, if nobody else noticed). I find this funny.

I noticed the option. Still only voted for George... Sorry, he's my favorite on this list. The OP asked who your favorite was.

I thought they'd give AotD to either Tim McGraw or Kenny Chesney, akin to giving it to George in the 2000's. All a little past their prime, but recognition for contributions for the current decade and the ones before. Missed opportunity I think.
This is actually the first I'd heard that Jason Aldean won the award. I'm shocked.

I thought it'd for sure be Kenny Chesney. I didn't think there was any other option close. And I'm not even a big fan of his. Jason. Wow...

Remember when one future Artist of the Decade kept the current Artist of the Decade out of the top spot on the charts? I do. It happened in September, 2009 when Jason Aldean landed his biggest hit, Big Green Tractor. That kept George Strait's Living For The Night dangling at the #2 position. Shortly after both records peaked began Aldean's decade of dominance.
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 19, 2009: 1. BIG GREEN TRACTOR-JASON ALDEAN-BROKEN BOW 2. LIVING FOR THE NIGHT-GEORGE STRAIT-MCA 3. Small Town USA-Justin Moore-Valory 4. American Ride-Toby Keith-Show Dog 5. Boots On-Randy Houser-Universal South 6. Summer Nights-Rascal Flatts-Lyric Street 7. Only You Can Love Me This Way-Keith Urban-Capitol 8. I'll Just Hold On-Blake Shelton-Warner Bros. 9. Gettin' You Home The Black Dress Song-Chris Young-RCA 10. Barefoot And Crazy-Jack Ingram-Big Machine

Here is another time where a future Artist of the Decade kept the current one out of the top spot on the chart. It happened in 1997 when George Strait's One Night At A Time kept Alabama at bay with their Sad Lookin' Moon.

Time to lock the poll. Thank you for your votes. My personal favorite is Marty Robbins. My first memories of country music involve listening to an eight track of Robbins' greatest hits. If it weren't for that, I probably would not have gotten into country music in the first place.
I will be posting more interesting facts about the winners of the Artist of the Decade.

Loretta Lynn became the first female artist to collect fifty top ten hits. She did so in 1981 when her duet with Conway Twitty, I Still Believe In Waltzes hit the #2 position. The following year, she collected her final top ten with I Lie. She shared the same top ten space with future winners, Alabama and George Strait.
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING APRIL 24, 1982: 1. Crying My Heart Out Over You-Ricky Skaggs-Epic 2. A Country Boy Can Survive-Hank Williams, Jr.-Elektra 3. MOUNTAIN MUSIC-ALABAMA-RCA 4. Remember when one Artist of the Decade namedropped another? It happened in 1993 when Garth Brooks released the lead single to his In Pieces album, Ain't Goin' Down 'til The Sun Come Up. He mentions George Strait. Guess what? Strait just jumped into the top ten with the lead single and title track to his album, Easy Come, Easy Go.
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING OCTOBER 2, 1993: 1. AIN'T GOIN' DOWN 'TIL THE SUN COMES UP-GARTH BROOKS-LIBERTY 2. Holdin' Heaven-Tracy Byrd-MCA 3. What's It To You-Clay Walker-Giant 4. In the 2010 and 2011 Billboard threads, I ranked a host of artists' top hits. I did so for five out of the six Artist of the Decade winners. The only artist I have yet to rank is Jason Aldean and that is because I do not have the chart data to look up. The only thing I do know is that Big Green Tractor is his biggest hit (four weeks at the top in 2009) while Tattoos On This Town stayed at the #2 position for six weeks between 2011-2012. The numbers indicate how many weeks the song was at #1 followed by the number of weeks it stayed in the top 40. Ready?

Congratulations go out to Jason Aldean for winning the Artist of the Decade for the 2010s. Whether you agree with the selection, you have to admit that Aldean dominated the decade. However, it all had to start somewhere. It did in 2004 when Aldean signed to the Broken Bow label. He issued his debut single, Hicktown in April, 2005. It climbed all the way to #10 in October, becoming his first top ten hit. That came from the 2005 self-titled debut album. Aldean got two more hits off the album: Why (#1 in 2006) and Amarillo Sky (#4 in 2007).
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING OCTOBER 22, 2005: 1. Better Life-Keith Urban-Capitol 2. Something To Be Proud Of-Montgomery Gentry-Columbia 3. Redneck Yacht Club-Craig Morgan-Broken Bow 4. Somebody's Hero-Jamie O'Neal-Capitol 5. Stay With Me Brass Bed-Josh Gracin-Lyric Street 6. Probably Wouldn't Be This Way-LeAnn Rimes-Curb 7. A Real Fine Place To Start-Sara Evans-RCA 8. Skin Sarabeth-Rascal Flatts-Lyric Street 9. Who You'd Be Today-Kenny Chesney-BNA 10. HICKTOWN-JASON ALDEAN-BROKEN BOW

While they were competing on the charts between 1981-1997, Alabama had more chart topping hits than George Strait. It certainly helped the group's cause when they took twenty-one consecutive singles to the top of the chart between 1980-1987. Strait would pull ahead of Alabama in 1998 with his 33rd chart topper, Round About Way. That came from his 1997 album, Carrying Your Love With Me. The first three singles were hits (all in 1997): One Night At A Time (#1), the title track (#1), and Today My World Slipped Away (#3-originally a #10 hit for Vern Gosdin in 1983). The fourth single, Round About Way was released in December and topped the chart in March, 1998. That same week, Alabama was at #38 with She's Got That Look In Her Eyes. They would peak at #21. Ever since, Alabama has been in the rear view mirror of Strait.
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING MARCH 7, 1998: 1. ROUND ABOUT WAY-GEORGE STRAIT-MCA 2. She's Gonna Make It-Garth Brooks-Capitol 3. You've Got To Talk To Me-Lee Ann Womack-Decca 4. What If I Said-Anita Cochran and Steve Wariner-Warner Bros. 5. Nothin' But The Taillights-Clint Black-RCA 6. Little Red Rodeo-Collin Raye-Epic 7. Just To See You Smile-Tim McGraw-Curb 8. The Day That She Left Tulsa In A Chevy-Wade Hayes-Columbia 9. Perfect Love-Trisha Yearwood-MCA 10. Love Of My Life-Sammy Kershaw-Mercury
