If anybody knows of anybody that may have saved ANY back issues of The Gavin Report prior to March 27, 1981, please let me know. Now that Record Research has done the complete history of the Radio & Records Top 40 chart, we'd love to do the same for The Gavin Report (which started in 1958). We don't even need the entire issue, just a copy of the Top 40 chart would be sufficient. Thank you!

How did you find copies of R&R from the 70's? The Library of Congress does not have any until the early '80's and the collection at New York's Lincoln Center library is very incomplete for that decade.

I wonder what Whitburn will do with his vast collection of music and music periodicals once he eventually retires. Will Record Research continue?

Obviously - not a one man job - he has employees. I imagine it would proceed like any company.

Thanks to the internet, they have downsized considerably. Also, general interest in the charts has dwindled. Record Research seems to be publishing more nostalgia books these days than updating current charts.

Record Research seems to be publishing more nostalgia books these days than updating current charts. Maybe it's because of how absurd today's charts are, with old songs randomly re-entering, Christmas songs from our grandparents' era re-charting, every song from every album hitting the top 40, etc...

On the topic of old music magazines does anybody here remember one called Network 40? Apparently they were the true inventors of PPW (Plays Per Week) and were using it way before R&R (who they took potshots at every week) did. They didn't quite use the entirety of all the CHRs in the country but their panel was way bigger than R&R and Billboard's (the number one song regularly got over 10000 spins as opposed to around 7000 on R&R). americanradiohistory.com has a few but their collection is lacking.

Thatβs looking at it from the point of view of a chart watcher used to old charts. Iβd say much of the lack of interest is mainly the lack of focus on charts in general culture. Ryan Seacrest isnβt as chart focused as Casey Kasem was, plus it doesnβt help that heβs more known for several of his other roles than as a countdown host. Plus, people mainly refer to segmented charts like iTunes for whatβs in now rather than an overall one like Billboard so their presence is less apparent than they used to be.

Good news! We FINALLY found a nearly complete collection of Gavin Reports going all the way back to 1958! I'm hoping that a book will eventually be done in the next year or two. Stay tuned...

Where have you found this? If you don't mind sharing. Either way, I am very interested in a book coming out about it.
