Thanks for posting the full lists, Gary. A note- "One Sweet Day" is missing from the Boyz and Carey totals and, it looks, the alphabetical listing.

Mariah's tracks with other artists were listed at the bottom of her section: I assume because she was the lead artist, it gets placed there in the listing by artist (i.e. not also listed under Boyz). |

^My eyes deceived me on that one.  Regarding the airplay-only tracks- some of them eventually did get a Hot 100 ranking, though, with no sales, I wonder how much higher "Iris" would have peaked if eligible at its airplay peak (it was in its 18th and final week at No. 1 on Hot 100 Airplay). |

Didn't Billboard publish the other chart for a few weeks before it officially became the Hot 100? And/or wasn't that chart used for "last week" or something on the Hot 100 when it debuted? That might give some indication. |

^Indeed- ranks on the test charts the prior two weeks were 7 and 6. So, probably top five, when airplay was at its peak number.

On October 31, 1998 the chart manager revealed that "Iris" would have been at #4 on the Hot 100 per the test chart. This was it's 13th of 18 weeks at #1 on Hot 100 Airplay. With no retail component, that is about as high as it would have gone that summer / fall with Aerosmith, Brandy & Monica hanging around. For some context, Dru Hill would have been #2 that week, despite only being at #41 airplay (but #1 in sales). She also said that the only airplay only song ever capable of getting to #1 was Celine's MHWGO (Obviously this was years before Aaliah eventually did it).

Would love a top 500 of the '00s - wonder if Gary Trust & the guys are going to publish that before we get to the Top of the 2010s NP. I can probably get that this weekend. Should I publish it here or in the "all-time" thread? |

I decided to put these Decade charts into their own thread, since they'll be static, and this way, they'll be easier to find.
But to make up for the inconvenience, I'm listing at least the top 1000.

I don't think so. It's possible (but not by me) to get a list of all "Air" songs from 1996, but where they would have ended up if allowed on the Hot 100 (e.g., would they still make top ten or #1) would not be possible to determine.
The sheer rankings would be insufficient. You'd need actual airplay points by wee vs Hot 100 points by week.
Unofficially, the Radio & Records chart was still around that year, which included a lot of "Air" hits, but didn't include sales. So not sure it would be of any more use. Here's a page that lists the R&R #1 songs of 1996: popradiotop20.com/1/RR1-POP-1996.htm

^ Billboard could do this, as they have the raw data (all point totals, etc) from all post BDS songs in the 90s.
I bet they WON'T, as this would create a 'parallel universe' set of peaks that people would debate and be confused by for years.
