a part of me is honestly shocked this didn't win. Doc Indie Party Rock 's #100 for "hurt" seemed to ruin its chances, and I expected the rest of the people to send to be nice to this song. but this just didn't get quite enough support to put it over the finish line... sorry, alexcuse

Portishead making it this high is amazing! I only wish their other singles had been so popular. I LOVE their first two albums.
Anyway, I think I tanked Carnival and When I Come Around awfully, and I don't have a good reason for that... I wonder what happened there.
Rooting for Name!

I know people tend to put this version down because of the Johnny Cash version, but you honestly can't compare the two of them. It may not resonate with people in the same way, but it's still an amazing piece of music (and I hate to admit it was Rick & Morty that got me to see that).

“Why the hell did this song make it so far? It's so boring and depressing. I know it's sad about what it's about, but he could have been a bit more cheerful and remembered more about the positives in his life. That would have made it a much much better song.”
Oh memories.
Great winner though.

The funny thing is that my top five was pretty bunched together, and I wasn't sure what to make my #1 at all. I went with the song that I thought would need the most help. Instead, it wound up winning the whole thing. ok Great job as always, lyhom...wait, what's that? checks watch...it's showtime? Again? Already?

so yeah, thank you all for participating and commenting on this rankdown! seeing how the results changed in real time again was pretty fun, from seeing songs at #1 that I never would have expected to be so high, to seeing songs having amazing comebacks, and seeing "stars" nearly break the high SD record for a while. making lots of great new discoveries was pretty fun, too (I somehow had never heard the original version of "hurt" until this rankdown, and it would have been my #1 in almost any rankdown other than this one), and this is probably one of my favourite alt rankdowns I've done.
as usual, seeing all you guys comment on reveals was fun, too, especially since I knew the results ahead of time so I could laugh when someone was pessimistic or overly optimistic about how songs would do lmao. even with all the breaks I made (sorry for those, by the way), there usually was at least one person posting during every reveal.
meanwhile, a fairly good rankdown host in singingrulebritannia is hosting the 1995 active rankdown that's due very soon, and we should see 1994 alt open up real soon with the wonderful Red hosting the entire thing.

10. Buddy Holly - Weezerand there goes one of my favorite songs of all time. This song is picture perfect Weezer. Exactly what I expected from a band called Weezer. I didn't even know Ric Ocasek produced the album at the time, but I knew it would be my favorite Weezer song ever. The tanker tho....WTF? I guess everyone tanks a song that boggles the mind. 9. I'll Stick Around - Foo FightersThe second Foo Fighters song I heard. A little less Poprock than "This Is A Call", but still a classic. BTW This band is the best thing that came from Nirvana, how the hell does it lose out to Nirvana? 8. The Man Who Sold the World - NirvanaI gave this a top 50 slot and I'm still one of the lowest rankers for it. It's a great song. Its a David Bowie song that I'm glad Kurt didn't Nirnana it too much. 7. Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead"High and Dry" was a one time deal for me. This song went back to the boring sound I mostly recall from this band. One bottom 10 to go. 6. Sour Times - PortisheadI don't know how this ends up so high. I didn't find it intersting. Not in the least. 5. When I Come Around - Green DayPPPPP Perefect rank and perfect Green Day song. Billie got his accent right on the nail. 4. Better Man - Pearl JamThis song....... is innofensive but still just too Eddie Vedder for me to like. I've pretty much done all the favors I can for this band. Only One song left from them that I really liked. 3. Say It Ain't So - WeezerI hope this means the correct #1 is on the way? This would be the second picture perfect vibe Weezer is known for, and my last top 10 contender. Great song. Rivers can deliver a song when he wants to. Never forget who was in the drivers seat throughout this album. Ric Ocasek. 2. Name - The Goo Goo DollsThis is one of the Goo Goo Dolls best songs. Not my favorite, but a damn good classic. 1. Hurt - Nine Inch NailsAlarming. Simply Alarming. I said all I had to say about this song. At least I'll never have to listen to it again. BTW, yeepiii :sip2: Not the #1 I wanted among this spectacular list of songs, but at least I had fun participating lyhom. Great job at master of ceremonies.

I know you have your reasons, crazi, but the worst song in this rankdown? Yikes. Burnout, man. Just plain burnout.
If it wasn't played so damn much on seemingly every radio station that plays '90s music, then I'd..."come around" to it again pretty quickly. :bert:

The first two minutes of this song are so tranquil and peaceful. It makes me feel relaxed. I love this song, so it's crazy that it ended up outside my top 25. That's how stacked 1995 was, music-wise.
Like I've said elsewhere, "Name" is the perfect easy-listening rock song of the 1990s, and it always makes me feel good when I hear it. "Hurt" winning this rankdown actually surprised me, not only because I knew that Doc Indie Party Rock ranked it #100, but also because the subject matter is just so dark. There's a reason why this would be the last song at the end of an album called The Downward Spiral: It's a song about suicide, and to think that a person could hate himself so violently to do it is incredibly sad. The bleakness of the subject matter is the singular reason why I couldn't include this song in my top 20, compelling as the song is. On a related note, am I the only one whose skin crawls at the "last-note nightmare" in this song?

before I go, however, I want to share something I decided to look at. ever since hosting 2000 alt, I've been interested in how removing some lists would affect the results, and one of the ways I did it was by making two lists, one for the upper half of people in rankdown closeness, and one for the lower half of people. I did the same thing here, and I want to share it. if you want to know what list your list is part of, check rowell's final stats post, and if you're below the 16th position in the rankdown closeness, you're in the low closeness list. {high closeness list} {low closeness list}

Fun fact: Trent Reznor's (NIN frontman) birthday is today, so Hurt winning this rankdown also serves as a good birthday present for him.

Great Top 10. Not my favorite song by NIN but it's not bad. Surprised (but not complaining) that Portishead made it to the Top 10. Thanks for hosting lyhom (now finish that other rankdown that you have going on).

The Dowager Countess Edition: 10. Buddy Holly---It's just one of those songs that is a ton of fun and makes you want to dance to it. And Disassociative is the one who's the tanker here? Of COURSE he is. 9. I'll Stick Around---Unfortunately I think Foo has already left their sweet spot, but despite my rank, this song wasn't bad. 8. The Man Who Sold the World---Maybe not top tier Nirvana, but fine Unplugged fare. Kinda preferred the other song, but this one is still good. Red, does your song involve a box? 7. Fake Plastic Trees---Maybe not top tier Radiohead, but still a fine song. I suppose that horseradish is on his way to Disassociative as we speak... 6. Sour Times---This is one song that I changed my ranking on in the last minute and I'm glad I did. I was afraid my original ranking was going to be too LOW. 5. When I Come Around---I'm convinced that Green Day won't win top prize. If this song can't do it, they'll have to settle for being another Goo Goo Dolls. 4. Better Man---Solid song and I fear my ranking is too low for this. Their sweet spot is coming in a few years, though. 3. Say It Ain't So---Heh, this song did better here than in my rankdown. I think this might be their best song, because it's not afraid to dive into darker matters and captures the mood perfectly. So it's my 7 vs my 18. 2. Name---Is it the best Goo Goo Dolls song? Perhaps. But it does leave good vibes when you're listening to it. 1. Hurt---I think there was something special in Johnny Cash's cover that Nine Inch Nail's original is missing. Don't get me wrong, it was a good song. But his version was great. Thanks, Lyhom, for being a good host even with the various breaks. Thanks, Rowell, for the stats even as mine started to dive down a bit late. And thanks, everyone, for participating even if a few of my rankings seem kinda bizarro to you. I do take this rankdowns seriously and listen to each song...even if I miss the point once in a while.

"Fake Plastic Trees" would have probably been my #1 - my third-favourite from them after "Creep" and "High & Dry". Sad that it didn't make the top 5, although this is still quite a good top 5.
