The Greatest Love Of All and I Wanna Dance With Somebody are probably in Whitney's top 3 along with I Will Always Love You as her signature songs. I agree they are known - "IWTDWS" more than "TGLOA" - but if you ask 100 people to name a Whitney Houston song, I feel like 70-80 are going to say "IWALY." That to me is what makes a signature song. It doesn't mean other songs are unknown or inferior, it just means one song in particular stands out for that artist. "I Will Always Love You" is sufficiently iconic that it could be considered a signature song for both Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton. (More broadly, songs widely identified with more than one act could be an interesting subject for another thread?)

Yeah I think 'the masses' associate "Jolene" and "9 To 5" with Dolly more than they do "IWALY." "IWALY" is certainly more tied to Whitney in a general sense than it is to Dolly. If we were specifically talking about the country music community, it's of course different.

Olivia Newton-John: The usual response is "Physical" or "Grease" (aka YTOTIW/SN/HDTY) - it's rare anyone calls out one of the Grease songs specifically - it's a package deal - and not a bad one!

Coldplay have more than one signature song because people tend to associate them with "Clocks", "Fix You", "Viva La Vida", and maybe "The Scientist".

Eminem's is Lose Yourself. And or Stan While Stan is certainly a noteworthy (and imo better) song, Lose Yourself is synonymous with Eminem's entire career. When people think of Em, the first song that comes to mind for I'd say about 75% of people would be "Lose Yourself". It was his biggest hit, by far his most popular song on Spotify and YouTube, as well as still being referenced in pop culture constantly (think "Mum's Spaghetti lol). On the other hand there's Stan which, despite probably being a better song for most people, comparatively isn't all that popular. Personally, I'd probably have both "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me" both over Stan for Em's signature song, but with Lose Yourself as the easy answer. But then again, the opinion on what a "signature song" is is completely subjective. Maybe someone would consider Stan his signature song because it better encapsulates Eminem as an artist, or shows at Em's core what he really is. It almost reminds me of Oasis in a way, with Wonderwall by far being their biggest hit, but Champagne Supernova better showcasing them as the artist they really are. Because there's no set criteria on what a signature song is, these debates are pretty much never ending lol

Yeah “Lose Yourself” is easily Eminem’s signature song. “Stan” is known more for its topic/meme nature than as a song.

Yeah “Lose Yourself” is easily Eminem’s signature song. “Stan” is known more for its topic/meme nature than as a song. It did contribute a new term to the popular vernacular, which became common use on this board among other places. But if anyone can point to it for a signature song, I'd say not Eminem but Dido, whose "Thank You" is of course sampled in it and later became a big hit on its own.

"Signature song". Ah, another arbitrary, ill-defined, subjective term.

But yeah, until someone can define these terms like "signature" song, there is no right or wrong answer. The only wrong is when people argue over someone else's answer without being able to properly define the term being answered in a way that is mutually agreeable.

"Stan" isn't in Eminem's current top 10 on Spotify or YouTube, so even if people use the term, they aren't checking for the song.

I think, when it comes to signature song talk, charts can’t really accurately gauge it. Like for Michael Jackson, you are not alone was a bigger hit than thriller but I’m sure we would say thriller is more his signature track. Same for Beyoncé. If I were a boy was the bigger song but Halo would be considered closer to her signature
