This has been really slow going in the 20-15 range. When I first heard this it seemed like a surefire #1. Now I think 6-10 will be its peak. I believe we are seeing the end of Keith as an A list radio star. His radio trek would have been an amazing 20 year run at radio for anyone, let alone an Australian born man, who never fit the look and sound of the country music mainstream. Keith will remain a giant concert draw and enduring staple of the Nashville talent / power elite and award circuit. I hope you're wrong and this does find its way to #1, but the way things are going for this and really everything since the fighter, you might be right..... i know that Coming Home went #1, but it probably shouldn't have.

I find it funny how everytime an artist does a duet with Carrie Underwood on their own album they lose radio airplay with subsequent singles overall. After "Remind Me", Brad Paisley began to fade from radio, Miranda Lambert hasn't hit the Top 10 on radio with her own song since "Something Bad" and now Keith Urban is starting to fade from radio a bit it seems like.

This will still be top 10... Brad's last few singles he's released have not even come close. And the singles before this for Keith did well too. Keith may be headed in that direction but he's not there quite yet.

It’s really about the poor single choices off the last album. “Female” had a message that clearly rubbed a lot of listeners the wrong way, even some who might’ve been inclined to agree with the general idea that Keith was preaching. “Coming Home” was a lot more radio-friendly but still a very different style than anything else that gets heavy radio play these days, and despite this it still managed a top 3 peak. “Never Comin’ Down” was super catchy and fun but again it stood out like a sore thumb on the radio, kind of like a slightly less polarizing “1994,” “Lookin’ for That Girl,” or “Smooth.” (Capitol clearly realized as much, since they released a radio edit that cut down the weirdest part of the bridge.) Radio may be slightly less forgiving of an older artist like Keith Urban releasing “tough sells,” but any artist would’ve struggled with those three singles. I’m confident that Keith would’ve had no trouble scoring top 3s if he had released safer singles like “Horses” and “Parallel Line.”
As for this, it’s way less “offensive” and easier for radio to play than the past four singles, but it’s just not really exciting anyone that much judging by the sales (which, to be fair, have often been low for older artists like Keith in the past and didn’t stop radio from playing the material) and scores. I think this could’ve done fine on radio if it were released as the lead single off the last album before Keith had all those under-performers, but by this point Keith’s lost a lot of his momentum and capitol with radio after releasing four singles in a row that didn’t respond too well with the GP, so it doesn’t completely surprise me to see that a song like this, which is just kind of dull and isn’t particularly showing signs of strong listener enthusiasm, is stalling outside the top 10. We’ll see if this ends up limping its way up the charts to achieve a decent peak position. I still think Keith can stay relevant at radio with the right songs, though.

It's Top 10 now.
I was kind of indifferent to this until lately. One of my favorites by him in recent years.

^If it hits top 10 on Billboard he’ll become the 32nd artist in history with 40 top 10’s.

I find it interesting that Canada seems to have treated Keith a lot better than US country radio ever since "Female". That one got to #3 while "Coming Home" was actually a #1 hit, and "Never Comin' Down" reached the top 10 (although I would've been completely fine with "Coming Home" and NCD not charting at all anywhere).

New version featuring Eric Church is out now.

New version featuring Eric Church is out now. Honestly that seems like a shady corporate move by Dungan to juice spins on a record that PDs have already determined is too bland for heavy rotation. They'll push this for a Mediabase #1 and then it'll drop like a rock, but it should peak at #6 or 7 (naturally). This may be another "Begin Again" situation.

Eric co-wrote this so it makes perfect sense to me.

Huh I like it so much better with Eric on it, not that I disliked the solo version but it fits Eric better.
Not too surprising I guess given he wrote it.

Honestly I like Keith’s version a lot and I’m kind of surprised this song isn’t doing better. It’s a nice touch for Eric to join in. The two of them are among my favorite artists so I’m thrilled at the collaboration. I like Eric’s style on this. I’m hoping this means a performance of this on the CMAs.

I don’t mind the new version.. I still think I prefer Keith’s but probably just because I’ve had more time with it.
I’ve never been much of a Keith fan.. this has actually become one of my favorites by him.

The Eric Church version is great. I already loved the original and have thought it was one of Keith's best singles in years, but the duet is equally good (not sure I prefer it to the solo -- mostly because I was thrown off a little by the tempo change -- but it is great). I really loved "Raise 'Em Up" from the Fuse era, and this feels a lot like that one sonically and vocally. They definitely sound great together, that's for certain.

I like Keith much more overall than I like Eric, but wow I wish Eric kept this song for himself. What a SMASH with his vocals...

Wow! I actually love it now. This is the old, authentic Eric Church I used to listen to in the car. Dungan can have this one. Alpha will leave this battle without bloodshed. But the silent war continues...

I can see this peaking at #1 MB/#3 BB behind Old Dominion and Luke Combs the week of November 11/11-11/17. This Eric push gave it just the right amount of juice to climb its way to the top.

I have the exact opposite take lol i think Keith's voice is waaaay more suited for this than Eric's. I don't dislike the new version but i definitely prefer the solo Keith version

Except they haven't sent the Eric Church version to radio. It's not on the publicized Play MPE, All Access and I never got it in my inbox so it appears (for now) they haven't given it to radio.

They did, however, send out a Christmas single from Keith called "I'll Be Your Santa." I believe this is his first holiday release.

Then what’s the point of doing a duet version if they aren’t going to release it to radio? Buzz. They have an ad in Aircheck's email this week, linking the duet version. It wasn't sent officially as an alternate version but UMG is making radio aware of it. Some stations did play it today as a "hey, check this out!" kind of thing. Stations could still create carts for it and play the Church version if they so choose, just use the audio from YouTube. It hasn't been sent to radio through Play MPE for immediate airplay but that doesn't mean it'll be ignored by programmers. "We Were" has had a slow go once it hit the top 15 and it's definitely not going to be remembered as one of Keith's biggest recent hits. The duet version still helps here, even if UMG isn't pushing it to replace the original version, which is essentially what you want if you do that at this point -- similar to when Tracy Lawrence sent out a version of "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" with Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney on it -- that was the version many stations played once it was made available. I'm sure it'll see some spins along the way and help the single for its last chart trek.

I hope the new version with Eric gives this the boost it needs (sent to radio or not), but I’m worried about Keith’s future at radio. Radio seems to be in the beginning stages of phasing out a bunch of established artists, including Keith, Kenny, and Tim who are all struggling to some extent right now. They have already phased out Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts, and one could make the argument that they’re trying to phase out Carrie and Miranda also. This is all pretty reminiscent to the late '80s to early '90s, when so many previously established artists were phased out of country radio, such as George Jones, Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, and Waylon Jennings. A bunch of new stars broke out after that, including Garth, Alan Jackson, Clint Black, and Travis Tritt, who were dubbed the Class of '89. Now, forgive me if I’m being a bit overzealous with this situation, but I think country radio is going to see some major changes in the next few years. We’ve already seen a certain someone by the name of Luke Combs completely explode in success, with some calling him the next Garth, and I think we'll start to see some others really break out in the coming years (Jon Pardi, anyone?). Furthermore, the sound of country music is changing yet again, this time in the more neo-traditional direction. I’m definitely glad we’re starting to move away from the 2010s’ trend-chasing tendencies ( cough cough snap track). While I’m sad that the established artists that I love, like Keith, might not be able to be stable hit makers anymore, I’m excited for the next era of country music (and I hope radio won’t completely stop playing these older artists like they did in the '90s). P.S. I think I got a little off topic on this post, lol. If it doesn’t belong in this thread, feel free to move it to a different one. P.P.S. Play more women, plz thx...

Idk why no one has said the chorus in new version has more pop beats than original.
