Holy fvck indeed haha. I really enjoyed this sound from Demi, and her powerful voice fits this sound super well. Most of the tracks sound really good, and the few I was more neutral on were more because the songs didn't really appeal to me personally, rather than being something that I thought was objectively bad.
"Eat Me" also stood out to me. Not necessarily as a favorite, but because it's an experience to listen to lol.

Damn. This album is quite something. I was expecting much more pop/rock based on singles and not so many punk rock songs as well. Demi really went there! Really liking it so far.

This sums up my feelings as well after the first listen. Need to go back and cherry-pick my favorites but she sounds vocally fantastic from start to finish.

Welp. Demi lost me, but hopefully, her next album is more to my tastes. I wish her the best of luck with this project, regardless. This is her most critically acclaimed album, with 76 on Metacritic. Very nice!

The first-day Spotify streams for most of the album tracks are in the four digits. Am I reading this correctly, or have they simply not updated with the full first-day?

The Spirit of Antichrist in Demi Lovato Has Finally Revealed Itself 1:00PM EDT 8/19/2022 JAMES LASHER For years, Disney alum Demi Lovato has struggled with her identity and mental health. She suffered from addictions, and even jumped on the pronoun bandwagon, but recently changed them back to her original "she/her" designation. For a while, it looked like she was recovering from the spirits that had been plaguing her body, soul and mind. Then she released an album that is nothing less than the work of Satan in her life. (*Warning, this link contains iconography that is demonic.) The title, Holy ____, leaves nothing to the imagination about the direction by which she was influenced to take her newest musical foray. Filled with expletives and guitar riffs that are this generation's version of Black Sabbath, Lovato shows that she has indeed been "reborn" as she alluded to in her documentary, Dancing with the Devil. In each generation, this spirit of Antichrist again raises its head, so what Lovato is doing is nothing new. From Ozzy Osbourne to Madonna to Marilyn Manson, this spirit has snagged the souls of performers who spread its message and iconography to entire generations. What is different now is how far that reach can go. Lovato has 139 million Instagram followers. Let that number sink in. Now realize the release announcement of this new album is on her Instagram page and understand that prominent musicians from decades past have never had advertising and marketing of this scope and power. Added to this staggering reach is another 54.2 million followers on Twitter with a profile banner of Lavato wrapped in leather and laying on a cross. But wait, there's more! Don't forget her 33 million followers on Facebook, with video giving behind-the-scenes footage of the production of the album. To give some scope to the magnitude of the reach Lovato has, consider that CBS News, ABC News, NBC News, MSNBC, CNN and Fox News have a combined following of 121.9 million users on Twitter—and Lovato has 139 million followers on her Instagram alone! This is a staggering reach and there is no doubt that many of her followers are young, impressionable adolescents. For Christians, this news should be both a warning and a call to action. Lifting this woman up in prayer so that the chains binding her are broken should be a priority for intercessors across the world. If she has this much range to spread the message of the Antichrist, imagine how much greater it will be when God uses her to bring Him glory upon her redemption. This type of spirit takes spiritual warfare to be defeated, for it is a mighty foe. The enemy is not stupid or weak, and although Jesus defeated death on the cross, until the time of His return we are to take up the whole armor of God and wage the spiritual war against the enemy. Demi Lovato is not the enemy; she is the deceived. The spirits, principalities, rulers of darkness and spiritual forces of evil are the enemies of God that Christians are to take up arms and warfare against. www.charismanews.com/culture/89941-the-spirit-of-antichrist-in-demi-lovato-has-finally-revealed-itself

^That's exactly the type of backlash she wanted to get for attention but no big outlets cared. These outlets have articles about how Madonna and Sesame Street are the devil too so it's really much ado about nothing. I listened to a few of the songs and I liked what I heard. Nothing outrageous or all that scandalous. A little profanity, yeah yeah yeah.

She’s so all over the place as an artist lmao.
Everything about this era - the album title, the song titles, the image just reeks of a 14 year old teenager going through a rebellion phase and trying their absolute hardest to be edgy except she’s a 30 year old veteran.

Agreed. It's her best album, tho. So yea.

The whole "playing with blasphemy to be edgy" is beyond tired. As a Christian, I'm not even going to dive any further, because I am not a zealot, but it's always been a turn-off to me.

I don't mind intelligent or provocative use of Christian imagery. I'm not sure this is quite on par with that though. I like the cd, but it does kinda feel like...maybe I would have liked it more if I was 17ish than my age right now lol. Which, I get I am old now, but are the young people digging this?

I'm sure rock music is something Demi genuinely likes, and there is genuine passion in this project. That said: Demi is a sonic chameleon in the worst, most manufactured way. Her sound has ALWAYS evolved to suit what's big on the charts, and there's no way they would be making a rock project at all if it weren't for rock's recent re-emergence on the Hot 100.
Personally, I very sincerely agree with the Jezebel article's assertion that Demi Lovato is stuck in an "authenticity loop" -- every single successive album has been branded as "finally, we're getting the REAL Demi."
I think that narrative works for a single record. Two is pushing it. Three? Four? It's tiresome, it's ridiculous, it's stale. It's like the little boy who cried wolf. When Demi promises me I'm getting the REAL, UNFILTERED, ENLIGHTENED, ACTUAL Demi this time, my reaction is just, "Okurrr. Suuuure. Right."
Demi seems like a perfectly nice person and I think that the media has been very uncharitable with her, at times even cruel, especially when it comes to gender. (I don't think Demi came out as nonbinary to be 'trendy' at all; in fact, I think it was actually to the detriment of her career and thus very brave.) That said, I don't think she's a compelling artist. I think the fact that she has to constantly reassert that she's DEFINITELY TOTALLY FOR REAL THIS TIME every time she releases a record is just a show of how lost and disoriented she is, as both an artist and a human being.

I’m not sure what any of that has to do with the quality of the music.

The paratext and narrative surrounding Demi's music is more interesting to me than the music itself.
Here's my thoughts on the record in question: it's alright. But if I want female-led pop rock with a hard edge, I'd rather listen to Poppy.

The 66% decrease in SPS from last year’s album is alarming.

I'm sure part of it has to do with the lack of any hit single whatsoever, even a minor one like "I Love Me" and "Dancing with the Devil" and the lack of any hyped collaboration like "Met Him Last Night," but that's still a really significant drop in just one year. There's probably a good chunk of fans that just aren't interested in this new style, but I can't help but think this drop is also largely coming from negative reactions towards Demi as a whole.
I haven't had the time to check out the album yet myself, but I'm still saddened to see such a stark decline. I'm also surprised to see Devil opened with the same numbers as Tell Me despite the latter having an actual major smash hit at the time of release in "Sorry Not Sorry," but the other one not.

Well 'Dancing with the Devil...the Art of Starting Over' was her first album after the overdose and I think people were curious what she had to say about it. Regardless, I enjoy the new album and I am happy that her top 10 streak continues.

Whoa this is much better than I was expecting. Still not on the level of Confident or even close to Tell Me You Love Me, but this is, on first listen, at least as enjoyable as Demi or Unbroken.

The thing about Demetria is she will ALWAYS commit vocally. I wound up getting this from Amazon, using a gift card from my parents. This is very well-produced. It's definitely a worthy place in Demi's catalog. I will admit to being against the project at first, but I wanted to at least give it a chance, in full, before making a final judgment. And yeah, it's much better than I had expected. It's definitely her most cohesive in...forever, so I get why critics are saying it's her best work, even if sonically, it's not what I personally want from her. Even that comment gives me pause, because I got this the same time I got Muse and Blondie projects, but again, it's more about where I personally think she shines. She is the artist and it's up to the listener, obviously, if they want to be a part of that specific part of the journey. I'm glad I stuck to my overall respect for Demi's voice and let that make my ultimate decision. I like that she is this multi-faceted. Not many artists can say that. After hearing this in full, I am confused by the single choices. This is definitely better than her last album and I enjoyed that. B+
4 Ever 4 Me (well...I never knew I wanted Demi to front the Goo Goo Dolls, but here we are. This is absolutely beautiful. I'm a sucker for this s**t, admittedly, but I got so emotional and I am dead single.) Wasted (unreal...) Come Together (sounds like a single) Happy Ending (should have been the first single, honestly) 29 (one of the best songs in Demi's discography, period.) Feed (classic rock vibes, I dig.) Substance Bones City Of Angels (the ending OMG) Dead Friends Skin Of My Teeth Eat Me Freak Heaven (both Green Day and Marilyn Manson should receive credit, but, OK. Her vocal performance saves this. She sounds AMAZING.) Holy f**k Help Me
Overall album ranking (not counting her first, because I don't know it): Confident (it's a personal choice but there is not a single song I would skip on this album and it's only album of Demi's I feel that way about. Also, any album with Father on it is BOUND to be my #1, but we also have back to back pop anthems in Cool For The Summer and Confident, as well as some of her BEST album tracks - Lionheart, Wildfire, and For You. Just a winner. It's a shame that she wasn't feeling confident at all when she made it because she sells the hell out of it.) Tell Me You Love Me (I never remember Only Forever until I listen to it again. Everything else is pure gold though and this is very close to Confident for me.) Holy Fvck The Art Of Starting Over (I still think this album, while unfocused as hell, is a strong one.) Here We Go Again (This album holds up REALLY well. I'm sorry I ever ignored it. The quality is more consistent than on Starting Over, but that album just has some killer songs with more depth. This still gives me Disney, but at least much more elevated level than her counterparts.) Demi (a SLIGHT improvement over Unbroken, but it's weird to see the regression as she got older. Her voice definitely got stronger as she progressed in her career though.) Unbroken (Skyscraper was the song that made me pay attention to Demi in the first place and now that song remains one of three listenable songs, along with Give Your Heart A Break and Lightweight on the album.)

Demi Lovato logs the highest debut of the week on the Billboard 200, as Holy Fvck starts at No. 7 with 33,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 20,000; SEA units comprise 12,000 (equaling 15.62 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks); and TEA units comprise the remaining sum. Holy Fvck is Lovato’s eighth consecutive top 10 album on the Billboard 200 – the entirety of their charting efforts.

Took me a while but this finally clicked with me, their vocals are phenomenal I feel like a lot of the songs are too similar but still work, definitely an album that will just pass by and be rather forgotten in their discography in the long term Shame because I would rank it 3rd behind Confident and TMYLM but it does take its time to warm up on you
