Hip Hop Album Sales: Tyler, The Creator Nabs First No. 1 Billboard 200 Album With "IGOR"

Tyler, The Creator’s latest project, IGOR, has made its Billboard 200 debut at No. 1 for the week ending May 23.

It marks the first time the Odd Future alum has accomplished such a feat. The 12-track project serves as the follow-up to the 2017 Grammy Award-nominated Flower Boy, which made its entrance on the chart at No. 2.

Closely behind is DJ Khaled’s Father Of Asahd, which hit the chart at No. 2. Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion has cracked the Top 10 with Fever and JayDaYoungan’s Endless Pain hobbles on to the chart at No. 70.

Tyler, The Creator is likely on top of the world this Memorial Day after his fifth solo studio album nabbed the Billboard 200 crown. With 164,866 total album equivalent units, 74,052 pure albums sales and a streaming count of 122,858,894, IGOR outsold Flower Boy by roughly 4,000 album equivalent units.

Entirely self-produced, the album features guest appearances from Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, Solange, Kanye West and Jerrod Carmichael as well as backing vocals from Santigold, Jessy Wilson, La Roux, CeeLo Green, Charlie Wilson, Slowthai and Pharrell Williams, among others.

DJ Khaled’s Father Of Asahd came close to debuting in Billboard’s coveted spot, but alas, it hit No. 2 with 135,802 total album equivalent units, 33,834 pure album sales and a streaming count of 123,208,459.

The prolific producer’s last album, Grateful, managed to get the job done upon its 2017 release. It debuted at No. 1 with approximately 149,000 total album equivalent units sold in its first week.

Father Of Asahd is another star-studded affair, boasting guest vocals from JAY-Z, Future, Beyoncé, Buju Banton, Cardi B, 21 Savage, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Meek Mill, Nipsey Hussle, Nas, Post Malone and Rick Ross.

Megan Thee Stallion’s “hood rat shit” has taken her debut album, Fever, to the Top 10. Reeling in 27,956 total album equivalent units, 3,725 pure album sales and a streaming count of 30,614,086, the project has squeezed into the No. 10 spot.

The 14-track effort is light on the features — DaBaby and Juicy J are the only guest vocalists who appear on the album.

They should at least put out an article saying the Billboard 200 is delayed indefinitely.

And HITS hasn't mentioned it yet.

I've been trying to see where '11:11' by Maluma ended up at the chart all day, it passed 'X100Pre" by Bad Bunny and got the number one spot on the Latin Albums chart. It shouldn't be taking this long, someone must have spilled their coffee on a computer or something.

HEY, SILVIO… IT’S WEDNESDAY
What’s going on at Billboard? The Bible has yet to reveal their chart announcing the winner of the Tyler, The Creator/DJ Khaled race. Normally, that would’ve happened on Sunday even with the holiday weekend. But it’s Wednesday already.

Sources tell us the Bible scholars are still drawing straws to figure out the merch conundrum. There must be some arbitrary rule(s) to apply when it comes to what does, doesn’t, should and/or might count in regard to D2C.

Nielsen published its numbers; Columbia’s Tyler wrapped with 165k, while We The Best/Epic’s Khaled got 136k. We at HITS gave the crown to Tyler back on Friday, putting IGOR at #1 with 172k; on our chart, Khaled was #2 with 132k. So, what gives? Is late the new norm, buddy? We have an abacus if that helps.

Also, when’s the last time Billboard named a different #1 from Nielsen? Or from HITS?

Not sure about Nielsen, but about a month ago HITS gave Hillsong United the #1 album and Billboard gave it to Pink after they took some of Hillsong's bundles away.

Oh I know—my question was around whether Billboard's specific policies for its album chart led it to name a different #1. For example, in a parallel universe where they didn't change the rules to allow store-exclusive albums to chart, Britney would have had that #1 over The Eagles in 2007.

Yes. This site went nuts when that happened. But even then common sense prevailed, the album moving the most units hit #1

What I think is happening now is confusion about what a “unit” is.

Here common sense is not winning since Neilsen already posted their data

Tyler, the Creator's 'Igor' Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart
Tyler, the Creator nabs his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as Igor debuts atop the list dated June 1. The set starts with just under 165,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending May 23, according to Nielsen Music -- the second-biggest week of 2019 for a hip-hop album. Of that sum, 74,000 were in album sales. Igor is Tyler, the Creator’s fifth studio effort and was released via Columbia Records on May 17.

DJ Khaled’s Father of Asahd debuts at No. 2 on the new Billboard 200 chart, scoring the artist his eighth top 10 effort. The star-filled set launches with 137,000 equivalent album units, of which 35,000 were in album sales, 7,000 in TEA units and 95,000 in SEA units. The latter sum equates to 123.2 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s tunes in its first week – which also makes the set the most-streamed album of the week.

Billie Eilish’s former No. 1 When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? slips from No. 2 to No. 3 in its eighth week, earning 63,000 equivalent album units (down 8%). Another former No. 1, Khalid’s Free Spirit, slides 3-4 in its seventh week, tallying a little more than 40,000 units (down 11%).

The National achieves its fourth top 10 album, as I Am Easy to Find arrives at No. 5 with 40,000 equivalent album units. (All four of the rock band’s top 10 albums have also debuted in the top five.) The new set’s first week was led by album sales (33,000), with a significant chunk of that figure derived from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer for the act’s tour that started in April.

Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next, slides from No. 5 to No. 6 with 34,000 equivalent album units (down 7%). The former No. 1 has yet to depart the top 10 since it arrived atop the tally 15 weeks ago.

DaBaby’s Baby on Baby hits a new high, as the album climbs 8-7 with 30,000 equivalent album units (up 8%), while Logic’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind falls from No. 1 to No. 8 in its second week, with 29,000 units (down 64%).

Rammstein logs its first top 10 album ever, as its new self-titled set starts at No. 9. The album earned 28,000 equivalent album units, of which 25,000 were in album sales. The effort is the rock band’s first studio album in nearly 10 years, since Liebe ist für alle da bowed in October of 2009, and debuted and peaked at No. 13 on the Nov. 7, 2009-dated list. That album previously was the highest-charting set for the group.

Closing out the new top 10 is Megan Thee Stallion, who debuts at No. 10 with Fever. The buzzed-about Houston rapper’s album bows with 28,000 equivalent album units earned, mostly driven by streams of the set – it tallied 24,000 in SEA units. That figure translates to 30.6 million on-demand audio streams for the album’s songs in its first week.

Megan Thee Stallion previously hit the Billboard 200 with the Tina Snow project, powered by the single “Big Ol’ Freak.” The album dips from its No. 166 high to No. 167 on the latest chart.

On the Hot 100, "Earfquake" enters as his biggest hit.

Tyler, the Creator re-enters the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated June 1) at No. 1 to become the top musical act in the U.S. for the first time, as his new LP IGOR debuts as his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 165,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music.

The Artist 100 measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Concurrently, Tyler debuts eight songs from the set on the Billboard Hot 100, led by "Earfquake" at No. 13, marking his highest-charting entry on the tally to date. (Until this week, he'd hit a No. 87 Hot 100 high, with "Who Dat Boy" in 2017.)

DJ Khaled re-enters the Artist 100 at No. 2, as his new album Father of Asahd launches at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, becoming his eighth top 10.

Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, BTS dips to No. 3 after five total weeks on top, Billie Eilish drops 2-4 and Halsey jumps 17-5, as her new single "Nightmare" launches at No. 15 on the Hot 100 with 20.1 million in radio reach, 16.7 million U.S. streams and 42,000 sold.

Drake has been robbed of SO many weeks #1 on the Catalog Chart because their stupid rule with GHs.

Stop lumping all streams to these veteran artists Greatest Hits albums, and just add them to the respective studio albums.

Drake could release a Greatest Hits next week with all his career singles, and it would literally never leave top 10, because of his recurrent streams. If NOW! hit compilations only have pure sales count to them, then the same should apply with these other hit compilations...
