OK- so I went to my music library saved on my desktop. Anything purchased on iTunes, shown with a Real Player icon, plays in whatever player I open (with some players also showing the single/album cover art). However, there are some that show with the iTunes icon, that say MPEG-4 Audio File (Protected), that the audio will not play in QuickTime or VLC (though it does show the artwork).
Will Apple just deleted the store availability on existing software, with you being able to still play that music on the software? Will all that transfer to Apple Music software that you can download for free? The questions...

Everything looks the same to me?? The Itunes store, my playlists, etc. Aren't they just getting rid of the iTunes logo? I would think it's just going to be an update of some sort but I am not that technically savvy so I could be reading things wrong.

^It may not be taking effect instantly. Guess we'll see when official details are out.

Thank god because when it comes to User Interface and overall software iTunes is the worst. I held on to my Zune software until I upgraded laptops and lost it this weekend.

I don't use iTunes to buy music, but I do use it on my PC to listen to music. I'm curious to see how it's all going to be worked out.

^Thanks for posting that. Looks like Windows users, according to Pitchfork's article, won't be affected.

I think it's time for people like me that download music to start considering moving to other outlets in the future. I'm sure some people have bigger libraries, but mine is approaching 30GB which can be a bit of a pain to backup/move from one computer to another.
Just a couple months ago my hard drive broke and recreating the iTunes library from my iPod was a pain in the ass.
Plus the fact that most of us that still use iTunes do it for some very specific reason (i.e. old iPods), because there are much better apps out there for Windows.

with the ending of itunes i am wondering if Kworb will be able to track the sales with the new version. Yep... that's the thing that I wanna know the most. Imagine not having sales data when a song is selling 100k+. Geez... any predictions would be hard as f.... And without predictions there’s no chart!

I still haven’t looked into what’s going to happen and even when. I rely extensively on my iTunes library for most of my music listening. I also still buy CDs but when it comes to playlists and iPhone music, it’s all sourced from iTunes so how this change will effect me, if at all, I need to figure it out because as odd as it is to say it, my weekly routine also kind of depends on it too lmao

What's Really Going On With Apple's iTunes Shutdown?
News
By Micah Singleton | June 05, 2019 3:31 PM EDT What's Really Going On With Apple's iTunes Shutdown?
On Monday (June 3), Apple announced that it was splitting the iTunes app into three distinct programs: Apple Music, Podcasts and TV. But there’s still quite a bit of confusion around how existing music libraries will work, how devices will be synced and the status of the iTunes Store. Billboard hopped on the phone with Apple to clarify all of the burning questions around iTunes, Apple Music and the future of the digital music store.
The big takeaway: Apple is not shutting down the iTunes Store -- the company says it never considered it -- nor removing any features that users have come to love.
On macOS Catalina, the iTunes Store will continue to exist in the sidebar of the new Apple Music app, and the store will also continue to be available on iOS, Windows and Apple TV. Apple says users’ music libraries, including music that has been imported into iTunes, will be fully intact and available in the new Apple Music app, whether or not they subscribe to Apple Music. iTunes gift cards and credits will still work in the new apps, so there’s no need to rush to use up gift cards before the next version of macOS arrives.
For users concerned about iTunes Match, Apple says that feature will continue to exist and will not be changed. The new Apple Music app will also retain all of the iTunes features like smart playlists, as well as the ability to burn CDs. The company also noted that the new Apple Music, Podcasts and TV apps will only be available on macOS Catalina, and not on older versions of the operating system.
Courtesy of Apple
Device management for iPhones, iPads and iPods has moved to the Finder in Mac, which means iTunes won’t open every time an iOS device is plugged into a Mac, a long-overdue feature. Audiobooks will move to the Apple Books app in macOS Catalina, mirroring its placement in iOS. All of the videos purchased or uploaded to iTunes will be available in the TV app and podcasts will live in the Podcasts app.
For Windows users, Apple says iTunes will continue to work in its current state, with no changes to the experience. Despite the doom and gloom around the demise of iTunes, all of the features that currently exist in iTunes will still be around on macOS Catalina -- it just may take a few more clicks to find them all.

Purchasing the actual music is always the safest, though today's generation doesn't think in those terms. I mean, what happens if, one day, these streaming services crash/cease? Likelihood may not be high, but there's always the chance. You're absolutely right about that. For example, during one update 2 months ago, I lost 100+ songs on Spotify from a range of 'classic' artists: Janet, Olivia, Steve Winwood, Bryan Adams, Bob Marley, Cathy Dennis, Moody Blues, etc. Fortunately, I still had my original files saved on a cloud, so I was able to download and then upload to iTunes. I'm now keeping a 'Removed' playlist to keep track of the lost music with the hopes some of the songs will return. I still believe the 3 major labels will end up creating their own streaming services one day similar to what's happening with video - look at all the content that's been pulled from Netflix by DisneyPlus and soon WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal, etc. Each major music label has plenty of diverse content to do something similar and keep it exclusive. Looks like I'm safe, since my computers are Windows based - everything else is Apple interestingly.

Plus my play counts. It's not the worst thing in the world but my play counts have been ongoing since 2009 lmao lmao this has been my #1 concern. Does anyone know what's happening with metadata like that? ETA: Judging by the article Gary posted, I assume things will be retained? It just seems more like a rebranding to me than anything.

Despite things being 'retained', the writing is on the wall.
It's pretty clear where Apple (and the industry) is going, and a wholesale cancellation of iTunes would create a massive PR backlash from millions of users who have spent billions (?) of dollars over the last 15 years.
But by phasing this out in stages over a couple of years - with rebranding and upgrades - burying the interface in a Mac Finder - it's a 'soft cancellation'.
I really don't think that after this, record companies, etc will be making iTunes (Music) any sort of priority moving forward.

I keep trying to convert entirely to streaming (Spotify), but every time I look to make the move (it would certainly free up space on my devices) I realize there’s A LOT of music that I have in iTunes that’s nowhere to be found on Spotify.

Spotify lets you play music files already on your computer as well.

But it won't automatically sync the files to your phone, etc...
There's no painless way to migrate.

^If you have iTunes on a desktop, there shouldn't be a problem? And in any event, shouldn't mobile users have iTunes files transferred to the Apple Music app?

I use both Spotify and iTunes for music. The only thing I hope transfers is my iTunes playlists to the new Apple Music App. I don't think anybody wants to make all these playlists all over again.

^That includes digital downloads attached to the singles he was selling via his website. Nonetheless, 2019 digital sales topped 300 million, which is still a significant figure, even if it's just a fraction of track sales' peak.
