Wow this is the best start I could have asked for. All my lowest ranks gone, and if my 22 is next then the top 5 will all be in my top 10.

Yea, the fact that two Xanadu songs made the top 10 while "Hold On Tight" didn't even make top 30 is uh...highly unsatisfying.
Finally, Shadows is gone and only the best songs remain. Along with my 6 and 14, I'm glad to see my top 3 got the respect it deserved. These songs could go out in any order, but I doubt said top 3 is going to be the overall top 3, especially since one of them is probably tim's last bottom 10.

SUPER FREAK vs. IN THE AIR TONIGHT Which song will come out on top? Will it be Rick James or Phil Collins that takes the victory? Both of these songs were very well liked with each receiving 11 top tens. Both also had low standard deviations with one having the lowest SD and the other the 10th lowest SD. Az Paynter , mamooshka , Sambalada , and Unhinged all still have their #1 in this. Who among them will get to see their favorite be crowned as champion? Find out in a few minutes....

The Lost Hits of the Early 80s rankdown is now complete! Thank you to all who sent in a ranking and participated. Special thanks to those who played along and kept things interesting with their commentary throughout. I know some of these songs may not have been everybody's cup of tea but I still hope you were able to make some discoveries along the way. Overall, I'm really happy with the way things turned out. And I think we ended up with a winner that most of us can appreciate. It was pretty cool though to see Rick James win in such a convincing fashion with almost all of us ranking "Super Freak" top 20. Xanadu is right up there with Purple Rain for me in terms of the few soundtracks that I enjoy as a whole album experience. I think it's because of all the neon lights and 'the love that echoes of long ago' Cool to see Super Freak claim the top spot. Thanks, enjoyable reveals presentation rowellfarm490 ! Def looking forward to the mid-80s.

YES. I mean, my #1 would have been "Space Age Love Song" (duh), and I imagine that my ranking would have pushed "Start Me Up" below "The Look of Love"...but "Super Freak" won! Hell yeah. Not a single person ranked it below top 25, either, damn. It would have been my locked in #2, had I submitted, so I'm really glad it won. Not that I would have been upset if "In the Air Tonight" had won, of course. It would have been in my top ten, at the very least. As always, a great rankdown hosted, rowellfarm490...even if I didn't actually participate in this one. :kii:

10. He's So Shy - The Pointer Sisters Seriously my favorite Pointer Sisters hit ever. Billboard rules are kinda wacked back then. I mean this was on the radio 24/7. At least it got some real PULSE love. 9. Shock the Monkey - Peter Gabriel This one should have floored the much more simple "In The Air Tonight". One of my favs of 1983. 8. All Over the World - Electric Light Orchestra That's three of my top 10 out before my lowest ranking song. This one is such a bonafide classic. So much fun while viewing the music video too. One of the survival worthy albums I would need if I was stuck on an island. 7. Xanadu - Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra I finally saw this one at 8 years of age. I had a mean ass crush on ONJ back then. Super wholesome and Superhot with perfect 80's vocals. 'Xanadu' would be one of the survival worthy movies I would require if stuck on an island too. 6. Shadows of the Night - Pat Benatar Gotta love her for studying opera before going into Rock n' Roll. She would have been perfect for Symphonic Metal. 5. Space Age Love Song - A Flock of Seagulls Dammit. One more and my top 5 is cleared, and knowing you guys you will cause my demise. New Wave easily makes my top 10. 4. The Look of Love (Part One) - ABC Here is a perfect New Romantic song that has stood the test of time. This gets a spin at least once every two weeks on my foobar, and I have this album on vinyl. 3. Start Me Up - The Rolling StonesCrazy enough The Rolling Stones perform better on a Pop RD than an Actual Rock RD. It's great to see the Stones finally get some deserved recognition on these forums. 2. In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins I'm sure glad my #63 position kept this song from winning. I just don't like its simplicity. Its slow ,boring and I find myself in a coma before the actual drum kick in. I'm not surprised at being its lowest ranker. 1. Super Freak (Part I) - Rick James Another funk classic that has stood the test of time. Great winner. This one does anything but put me in a deep sleep. I love Rick James. Pimping ladies of the evening in his Music Videos.

Yea yikes at the disparity in my ranking compared to everyone else! I suppose this is just another example of how different my taste in music is overall, but honesty I have to admit that I just find the song to be a bit too 80’s for me. Maybe I need to go back and revisit this one a few more times. While I suppose I was the black sheep of the rankdown I had a lot of fun doing this even if it took quite a few revisions. Thanks for hosting this rowellfarm490 and it was fun getting to dig a little bit deeper into the lesser known hits of the 80’s!

50. Hot Rod Hearts (66): Nice disco pop song, but not as good as Steal Away 49. The One You Love (33): I've always liked the smoothness of this song. Great melody, vocals, and music (that sax!). Good to see it in the top half. 48. Hear Attack (34): This was a big hit back home, and a song that I've gone from liking to not liking to liking it again. I've grown to appreciate its music and production, including its rock vibe. And of course anything from ONJ always has a special place :) 47. Out of Work (64): This was kinda funk fun, with good music, sax included, but the chorus was a bit underwhelming... 46. You Don't Want Me Anymore (15): Awwww.... I have a lot of great childhood memories from this song. I really like the memories 45. Just Between You and Me (77): This had a promising start, but then the melody, specially the chorus, felt a bit of a rate-b 80s rock song. 44. When She Was My Girl (27): I didn't remember this one much from the 1980s, but it was a good disco type of song with strong melody and vocals. 43. Play the Game Tonight (43): P-P-P-P-PERFECT RANKING!!! I've always loved the lead vocals and the musicality of their singles. A good example here. 42. Someone Could Lose a Heart Tonight (76): This started promising but then it got into a bit of a samey-samey territory, so it didn't escape my bottom quarter. 41. Boulevard (82): Nice little song, but chorus felt a bit underwhelming and vocals went a bit off the rails at some points... 40. Hand To Hold On To (46): Rarely John Cougar disappoints. This was another classical JC-sounding song. 39. Everybody's Gotta Learn Something (48): Another song I've always thought that had a lot of potential, with very interesting melodies and music, but it wanders too much in the middle and turns into a bit of a far-too-long of a song... still, a good experiment of a song 38. On the Road Again (81): I wasn't sure where to rank this one. It made it to my 60s at some point, but I ended up liking other songs a bit more in the end. Nice country song, but I like Juice Newton's better 37. Late in the Evening (21): I've always liked the Latin vibe of this. The music and melody are pretty nice too. At least it made the top 40 :) 36. Hold On (6): Noooo..... :( One of my 1980s favorites, with A LOT of good childhood memories. I really like the nostalgic melody, disco pop vibe, and of course vocals, guitar, and percussion. It was my favorite Santana song of the 80s. I assumed I was gonna be its highest ranker, but was still hoping it'd be in the top 20 35. Breaking Away (35): Another P-P-P-P!!! One of my top 5 favorite discoveries. Strong melodic rock song. 34. It's Raining Again (7): Booo!!!! Another top 10 loss :( This was my favorite Supertramp song in the 80s. With time, Ive grown to like a couple of their songs a bit more, but the melody of this song always gets me. Strong mix of happiness and nostalgia, plus strong music and production and that nursery rhyme interpolation makes this a unique song that I really, really like. 33. The Night Owls (24): Another of my top 5 favorite discoveries in this RD. Strong classic rock sound here. 32. Damned If I Do (40): Pretty strong musicality here -which is kind of an APP signature- and some pop sensibilities makes it another unique, interesting 80s song. Good to see it this high. 31. Head Games (51): I like Foreigner quite a bit, but this wasn't one of their strongest songs to make it to my top half.

Even though it's too bad to see Cockburn this low regardless, he does have much better songs. In terms of 80s tunes, I wish " If I Had A Rocket Launcher" had been the bigger hit. And he was knocking it out of the park in the 70s. This is 1 of his 4 Alt hits from the 80s (Lions isn’t among them), although I can’t remember how many of the 4 are ranked vs extras

30. Dreamin' (13): I love this kind of melodic, nostalgic pop melody. An early 80s favorite-and big hit back home- just like We Don't Talk Anymore. It sounds very 80s and brings back several good memories of sunsets and night trips. 29. I Missed Again (18): I still remember watching this video in the early 80s. Another of Phil's hits and personal favorites from the early 80s. I definitely liked Phil's songs more than Genesis'... 28. Heartbreak Hotel (30): This was the most interesting and different Jacksons song in this RD (why isn't the other one gone yet???). MJ did a pretty good job here and the melody/production was cool. BTW, I don't remember this one from the 80s so it may have been discovery... 27. Gemini Dream (29): Great! I have a soft spot for this band. I only knew 3 songs from them in the 80s (Sitting at the Wheel, Your Wildest Dreams, Out There Somewhere), but when my brother bought their hits compilation in the late 90s, I got to discover several unique gems like this one. 26. Love Is Alright Tonite (75): The intro is good (but Linda Ronstadt did it better ), the verses are good melodic rock (but I prefer how The Hooters did it later), but then the chorus goes to rate-B 80s party movie soundtrack that I don't really care for I forgot this song existed before I listened to this RD. It was not in my bad songs territory, but in the forgettable zone, which means I finally cleared my bottom 35 25. The Wanderer (54): The music in the verses is sort of a cousin to Lipps Inc's "Jazzy". It's an interesting, different type of song for Donna, so kudos to her for doing this. I really like the energy chorus, but I feel the verses a bit cringy 24. 99 (12): I didn't care much for it in the 80s, but I grew to love it in the early 90s, after revisiting their catalog after my brother bought their Past To Present compilation, and after it got significant recurrent airplay back home. I really like the instrumentation, especially at the end, but also the use of percussion and piano throughout the song, and the mix of groovy pop with classic rock. Should've made the top 20. 23. She's a Bad Mama Jama (53): Nice, funky song, that I could've ranked higher with stronger verses... 22. My Girl (49): This is another unique type of song that starts very funkylicious but then goes to like folk rock territory, which makes it a bit weird. I would've liked it more had it stayed a bit longer in the funky lane. 21. I'm Alright (23): Not in my top 5 favorite Kenny songs, but still a solid pop-rock song. A typical great combination of classic rock music and pop delivery that Kenny is so good at. 20. I've Done Everything for You (47): I wanted to be kinder to Rick, but many of his songs end up sounding a bit too like amateur rock. This was much better than LIAT for sure, but his departure was overdue in this RD. 19. No Reply At All (62): YAY! Finally cleared my bottom 40. Another song I don't remember from the 80s. I do like the trumpets and percussion, especially in the verses, reminiscent of I Cannot Believe It's True, but the verses were a bit of a letdown. I was hoping the song would go somewhere else, but didn't. 18. Jane (20): This was my favorite discovery in this RD! Of course, I've always been a fan of Mickey Thomas' vocals, but the pure rock vibe of this song was what made the deal for it to end in my top 20 of this RD. 17. Rock This Town (32): This is my second favorite Stray Cats song, following Sexy + 17. Very classic rockabilly sound but with polished 80s production and strong rock instrumentation. Very cool and fun (and nowadays I'm rocking to their recent Cat Fight song :) ). 16. Lovely One (59): Freaking finally!!! Not a bad song, but Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) existed before this one, so it felt redundant / reductive. Finally cleared my bottom 60!

15. You Better You Bet (39): I like this progressive rock song, but this is not a type of song I'm a big fan of. Parts of it sounded a bit like Meat Loaf/Cher's Dead Ringer for Love, which is more the type of rock song I'd lean toward. I do appreciate its qualities, but just nt enough to be a top third favorite in this RD. 14. On the Loose (38): A bit more new wave than The Who, but still not a genre I'm a big fan of. Although this was a big hit back home making the top 40 of the year, I was never a huge fan of it. Just like #15, I appreciate it despite not being my favorite cup of tea. 13. Fire and Ice (19): I initially had this in my 30s, but the more I re-listened to it, the more I loved it. Strong rock song with great vocals (one of Pat's hardest ones), melody, and music. Simple but effective. Not sure it's in my top 10 of Pat's songs, but that's just because I like a lot of Pat's music. 12. Never Knew Love Like This Before (5): WTF??!!!! (sorry, but bottom 5 in THIS RD is BS lol). This has always been one of my late-disco favorites, since I first heard it around 1981. The pure nostalgic vibe gets me, to the point that this was one of the songs that my first bf and I would listen to ice our first year together. I especially like the last minute full of ad-libs and a slightly different melody. The music, vocals and production are pretty strong throughout the song. PLUS, this is the parent of one of my favorite Madonna's songs, too: Borderline. Further, I finalized this RD a day after watching Pose's episode where this song was featured in almost its entirety, which was awesome. In any case, I'm glad I was able to improve its final position in this RD. 11. The Voice (9): This is another TMB's song I discovered in the 90s and I immediately loved. It has a great melody, music (strings!), production, harmonies. A type of song the embodies 80s uniqueness and liveliness. 10. He's So Shy (16): This song not making the yearend Hot 100 in Billboard despite being a 3-week #3 is a clear sign of the WTF-ery of some of those countdowns. Anyway. This is a great R&B tune with an effective slight change of melody from verse to chorus. Although it's not in m top 5 PS songs, it's good to see them finally making the top 10 of a RD :) 9. Shock The Monkey (8): Ehmmm. Nope. This should've been a bit higher -at least the highest of all Genesis-related music in this RD. My favorite PG song. I believe this is ahead of its time, as it would sound just as good today as it did back in the early 80s. The synth pop-rock elements are spot on, as are the different parts/melodies of the song. Peter's vocal delivery makes the song as mad as it was destined to be. I can see how this may be seen as a bit too aggressive (tim?), but with so many subpar songs it's still a bit surprising to see this as a bottom 10. 8. All Over the Word (31): I've always been a big fan of ELO. This wasn't that popular in the 80s back home, so I sort of re-discovered it when I bought Flashback earlier this decade. It has that rushed, pulsing, pop chorus that is very ELO, but I felt the verses were a bit underwhelming. Not in my top 10 ELO songs (mostly composed of 1970s songs), and I think it took the spot of a few better songs in this RD. 7. Xanadu (2): It was about f'ing time that Olivia had a yearend top 10 song. Yay!! This is a short but epic song. Such a great combination of ONJ's magical vocals and ELO's magical music. This was a BIG hit back home, a yearend top 5, that would also become popular a year later with a Spanish version by kids group Menudo (that Ricky Martin was a member of for a few years). This is in my top 5 songs for both artists, and a song that I still listen to. I wasn't sure where to rank it in the end, as I oscillated among 2, 3, 4, and 5, but I settled for #2 as it's the second song of this RD I've listened to the most. 6. Shadows of the Night (14): This is a good pop/rock combo from Pat, with a strong production that serves as a good complement to her pretty good emotional vocals. A hit back home with some recurrent airplay, and just outside my top 5 favorite songs from her. GREAT to see the top 5 are in my top 11! 5. Space Age Love Song (11): AFOS is another very interesting, eclectic, unique band of the 80s. And this is a very strong song in terms of melody and production, with a melancholic, nostalgic, reflective vibe. I felt that The More You Live, The More You Love was a continuation/expansion of this song and a better song in the end, but this was a strong new wave love song anyway. 4. The Look of Love (1): YAY!!!! I was concerned that Pulse wouldn't appreciate this song, given the previous track record for ABC, Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins and similar sophisti-pop bands. I'm very glad that I was pleasantly surprised. This was love at first listen. It was a personal chart topper and one of my top 5 songs this year, as well as my favorite songs of the decade. I still listen to this song quite frequently, especially when I want to listen to something uplifting, to celebrate something, or have a song to sing out loud. My favorite ABC song by far and my sure #1 of this RD. 3. Start Me Up (4): I went back and forth with my ranking of this one, taking it up to #2 at some point. This is by far the most popular song back home out of all in this RD. One of their most popular and recurrently played hits back home. I liked it, but didn't looooove it back in 1981. By the end of the 80s, I loved it and it's one of my top 5 RS songs. Their Top 10 presence in a RD was long overdue, so it's great to see them top 5 in this one. 2. In The Air Tonight (10): I believe this is a song where its musicality and production are stronger than its melody. It’s also a bit longer than it should be, and its most needed madness comes a bit later than it should. Still, this is one of Phil’s most unique, hard, and vocally interesting songs, and a good representative of the eclecticness of 80s music. It’s also great to finally see Phil Collins in the top 10 of an 80s RD ☺ 1. Super Freak (3): YAS!! A 1980s classic in many ways. It has hooks galore, a precise sax-synth-bass combo to mix things up, soaring and dynamic vocals, and a rich melody. Plus, it’s been quite an influential song. Of course, MC Hammer renewed its popularity in 1990, but back in the 1980s songs like Der Kommissar / The Commissar borrowed from SF… A very much deserved winner of this RD. Thanks, rowellfarm490 for hosting! Sorry I couldn’t keep up with the reveals this week, as I flew abroad on Wednesday, but it was good to read all the info later on anyway. Great job with the stats!! (and I’m quite happy to see that I ended up #4 in closeness ).

I couldn't participate in this one but I will in the mid and late 80s ones. The Look of Love would have been my #1.
