Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I like "ME!" way better.

i honestly quite like this. the lyrics aren’t amazing but i don’t have a problem with them, the production is nice and i think the oh-ohs sound really good too. plus i like the whole lgbtq+ message behind it. i hope this does well!

I'm so far up Taylor's ass I literally will like anything she releases. I'm not a country fan, but her country songs? Slaps. The entire Reputation album? I still listen to it on repeat to this day. So I literally have no worries going into Lover on August 23rd.
Unpopular opinion: I still like "ME!" better. It's much catchier and I've played it at least once everyday since it's release. Weird how much I like it.
But overall production on "You Need To Calm Down" is much stronger and so are the lyrics, while the general instrumental of "ME!" is better to me, if that makes any sense.
Anyway, really excited for the album. Going to be her best one yet!

The "snakes and stones" part implicates her, but I think the first verse is about online trolls in general (who also used the snake emoji). The second verse is about homophobes, and the bridge is about people pitting women against each other. It's not about a singular feud.

To make the song about a specific person would be against the spirit of that lyric about not obsessing over someone else

She has definitely hit a creative roadblock. She’s always walked a fine line of going cheesy and amateur with her lyrics but this era is on another level. I think you may have hit it for the win.

This is vastly superior to the reductive, bland, cheesy, kids bop infestation that is "Me!". That was probably the only single by Taylor I couldn't legitimately even tolerate. If that heaping pile of sh*t can get to the top 10, then this should have no issue and thus far from reactions I am seeing, the reception of this is much better overall. lol I have a feeling the video is gonna be cheeky as hell and sway most who aren't on board yet.

Yeah, I like this. It falls in line with her second singles with "bratty" lyrics which I do enjoy when tastefully done.
I think the lyrics on this one may be a bit harder for the general public to digest than her previous ones, but once you digest it, it's a cool bop.
Certainly better than ME!

Love the chorus and the production but cringe at the lyrics in general. We love an LGBT+ ally for sure but our lingo only works on the internet and when used by drag queens otherwise it's just.. crickets.

Am I the only one who actually thinks the lyrics are very clever? “Shade never made anybody less gay” Since when do homophobes “shade” gay people? I don’t think calling somebody a f*ggot is shade. I don't think it's homophobes that "shade." In my experience, it's the white, christian, suburban moms, who make snide/snarky comments but will then follow it up with, "I love the sinner, but hate the sin."

pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/taylor-swift-you-need-to-calm-down/This excerpt from the Pitchfork review articulates exactly why her sudden LGBT support/these lyrics feels a bit calculated. I'm always down for someone showing support to the LGBT community obviously, but it be nice if it didn't seem like such an obvious way to gain some "social justice" points and capitalize on how much Pride month has been commercialized in the last few years. I don't think she's being fake in her support or anything but her intentions don't come across as completely sincere and selfless. Would have come across a lot during the Reputation era IMO or better yet if it happened during the middle of an era/during her hiatus because then it wouldn't come across as self-serving. This is admittedly a bit nitpicky and not something I'm trying to demonize her for, just can't help but feel like this is all part of the marketing for this era.

I will admit that my eyebrows flared when I first heard the lyrics, and I totally respect and get the arguments that the Pride-focused lyrics feel somewhat opportunistic, particularly when she dropped them in June.
Although we’ve come a long way in the last decade or so, there is still a very large swath of the listening audience that is wary at best of LGBTQ issues. I imagine much of that segment staunchly supported Taylor’s material up to this point (it wasn’t THAT long ago that she was a country crossover artist). Taylor didn’t have to risk alienating them further than she already has, particularly with an album cycle-defining second single, but she did.
I do think Taylor deserves more credit than criticism strictly for the choice to lean in on the LGBTQ activism in her music. Whether the song was well-executed is, in my mind, another question.

Watch her represent the LGBT with drag queens or gay men or the like in her music video for this and people flip. lol
I have always been someone who appreciated every ally, so long as their support comes from a sincere and genuine place of love even if their delivery isn't always spot on the way I would like. Taylor has proven herself to be genuine in her efforts toward the LGBTQ community, so personally I don't mind if she gains "social points" or the like, because she has earned them through her actions if anything. I think the community wants support, but when we get it, a lot of people tend to scrutinize the way in which it is given when we need to see the good in it above all else. This is especially true from my side (trans) of the community. Now if Taylor was simply capitalizing on a movement for superficial gains and had never put actions behind her words I might be irked by the lyrics too, but that isn't the case and I believe her support to be sincere so I see no issues here. I feel like the criticism (for the LGBTQ lyrical-inclusion) is from a place of simple cynicism and is unfounded in this instance.

People literally told her to share her political and LGBTQ views for years and when she finally does it's calculated and selfish?.. Make up your minds.
I'm not the biggest fan of the song but the lyrics are completely harmless. It's not like Taylor hasn't shown herself as a true ally to the LGBTQ community for the past few months.

As a member of the LGBTQ community, I'm beyond psyched to have the biggest pop star in America call out the homophobes and reference a man wearing a gown in a positive way (I'm a man who wears gowns sometimes!). As others have said, her actions back up her words. I don't know why people think she seems disingenuous? If anything this is risky for her as pop stars going political does not always end well (see Witness).
On another note this is a total earworm as it's been stuck in my head all day. I think this is going to be a big hit for her.

In no way is this good though? It's queer-baiting (I mean unless she and Katy are at least bisexual but). It's not gonna be good for her career.

For a Pride anthem, this is super dull. Agree with the people who said it sounds like an album track.
