Unfortunately for yours truly, I become the next person to say goodbye to their #1. The King of Taste BlueShades874 joins me, because he knows what's up And as SHOOTER mentioned, it was his good taste that helped push this back ahead of "Love Ain't Like That" at the last second! Which is fine with me, because this song was a top 5 contender for a significant portion of the submission process. It couldn't hold on the whole time, but it at least managed to hold off enough songs to finish in the top half of the rankdown! I am absolutely in love with "The Hard Way"! The loud electronic-sounding fiddle is very Shania-esque, and the high note in the pre-chorus is everything Not to mention that the "I keep livin' and lovin' and learnin' the hard way" line is one of the most catchy chorus moments in Faith's entire catalog. How this got any bottom 2 votes at all is beyond me!

Somewhere I underranked/overranked Love Ain't Like That... I have it at #3 here, but like #117 in the 1999 country rankdown.

You turn around, Then you ask me behind tears of doubt Just what do I see in you. Please don't cry. I know sometimes it seems we barely get by. But you don't see how much you do To get me through.

Another one of her catchiest choruses of all time, "You Give Me Love" kicks off the top 5, also finishing as the highest album track in this rankdown! This song was pretty much neck-and-neck with "The Hard Way" in a ferocious battle to be the highest album track, but this one ultimately ended up managing to stay ahead at the end. BlueShades874 was the only one to get a perfect ranking here, but literally more than half of us put it at either #4 or #6, and that relatively low standard deviation was enough to help it finish at #5. I love this song! I am so happy to see both it and "The Hard Way" battle it out for highest album track, both making a run at the top 5 and giving the singles some competition They both are among my favorite album tracks of her career, and definitely deserved to do well here!

I forgot to mention, y'all may or may not remember that "You Give Me Love" finished at #1 in the album track side-component of the singles rankdown, meaning it was suggested as a favorite by the most people. So it should come as no surprise that it did so well here! "The Hard Way" also finished at #3, which I remember came as a surprise to some people. I look forward to seeing how these songs both do in the eventual album tracks rankdown!

I'd climb right up to the sky. I'd take down the stars Just to be in your arms, baby. I'd go and capture the moon. That's what I would do, Just to hear you say that you love me.

Probably no surprise that JTHYSTYLM leaves next, considering what is left... This song was a top 2 contender towards the beginning of the submission process, but ultimately the 3 remaining singles made short work of it and held it to #4.
This song is pretty catchy, but for some reason I always forget it exists. It was super hard for me to rank! It doesn't really have the "wow" factor that the bigger singles from this album do. The credit for Tim McGraw seems fairly superfluous considering that he is just a background vocalist (while Vince Gill was excluded from the narrative for "You Give Me Love" for basically the same level of prominence...), and I find that that tends to affect my enjoyment of the song a little bit. Tim/Faith's duets are frequently overrated. However, it is still a song I enjoy when it comes on. I would never skip it!

When I heard “The Hard Way” the first thought that I had was why didn’t they go with this as a single instead of “Love Ain’t Like That”?!? And while “My Wild Frontier” was my favorite album track I don’t think it would’ve been a great choice for radio so this one made for the more obvious choice…but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I think I initially had this in my top 5 but I’ll take the perfect ranking.
“You Give Me Love” was another great discovery and is my third favorite album track overall from the album. Ohhh and I had no idea that this was a Matraca Berg co-write!
I think we're all expecting "This Kiss" to easily win this but I hope "The Secret of Life" at least put up a good fight...which means I think "Let Me Let Go" will settle for #3.

Sam looks up from his Sunday paper, Says, "Boys, you're on the wrong track. The secret of life is there ain't no secret, And you don't get your money back."
3. "The Secret Of Life"
Track #7 Runtime: 4:15 Songwriters: Gretchen Peters
Placement in the Singles Rankdown: #5 of 40
The lights of this strange city are shinin', But they don't hold no fascination for me. I try to find the bright side, baby, But everywhere I look, everywhere I turn, you're all I see.
2. "Let Me Let Go"
It's the way you love me. It's a feeling like this. It's centrifugal motion. It's perpetual bliss. It's that pivotal moment. It's, ah, impossible. This kiss, this kiss!

"Let Me Let Go" is actually really good, it is a Faith song that I do enjoy when I hear it.
"This Kiss" is a'ight but overrated, overplayed, and oversung... no thanks. LMLG should have won.

I decided I need to do one of my random "entire-top-3-at-once" reveals for this rankdown, because #2 and #3 were really the most intense fight here, and as soon as I revealed #3 the #2 and #1 would have been obvious... "The Secret Of Life" and "Let Me Let Go" both put up a hell of a fight here for #2. As you can see from the trajectory graph, TSOL was actually the primary #2 contender, but LMLG was always within easy striking distance because for the most part people ranked these songs near each other on their lists. It was thanks to SHOOTER 's final list, which put LMLG 7 positions higher than TSOL, that LMLG finally took command. It would have been interesting to see what happened with more lists, but I feel like LMLG would have stood a good chance of hanging on to #2 once it had gotten there. Of course, "This Kiss" was the obvious and undisputed winner... Which should come as no surprise whatsoever, because if you haven't figured out by now that the biggest single from an album wins the rankdown about 95% of the time, you need to get with the program... Anyway, my thoughts! "The Secret Of Life" and "Let Me Let Go" are both insanely overrated... I enjoy them both well enough, but they are far from my favorites on the album. TSOL is just weird. The lyrics are odd, and the melody is bizarre. Nor does it allow Faith to shine as a vocalist. "Let Me Let Go" is overproduced and repetitive. Faith at least sounds better, but the song falls flat for me because of the overbearing production. That being said, the steel guitar intro is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard!!! It is a damn shame that the rest of the arrangement sounds nothing like the intro... "This Kiss", despite its overplay through the years, is iconic as hell, and I have no problems seeing it winning! It is so catchy, the musical arrangement perfectly matches the song, and Faith nails the jubilant emotions necessary to pull off this song convincingly. This is the Faith album where I am most burnt out on the singles, so I am disappointed to see 4 of them end up as the top 4 when there are incredible album tracks just begging for a chance to be heard... But for how sick of the singles I am, "This Kiss" winning was basically the best-case scenario, because it is still by far my favorite single from this album One of those songs that I just never get tired of!

And to think "This Kiss" only won by 10 points... If you had put aside your judgy attitude towards Faith and bothered to participate, you could have potentially given us a surprise LMLG winner!! ;)

Good finish, "This Kiss" isn't my favorite or even in my top 5 but I can't deny it's a good song. I was just hoping for my top 2 to take it down lol

Back in the day when I’d go to a deli in the morning, I’d always smile when I’d see old people talking because all I’d remember would be The Secret of Life. It’s a timeless song, especially the highlighted verse

I adore "The Secret of Life" and have since I first heard the song. I can't tell you how many times I've gone to put this song on when I'm having a bad day and it always reminds me to just chill out for a sec and take a breath. While there was little doubt that "This Kiss" would take the cake I was hoping to see this come in second but thanks to SHOOTER it ended up missing the mark by two points! Nonetheless, all three of these songs were in my top 3 so I can't really find much to complain about. Looking forward to the next album!
