There was a sequel to Rock Star. The winner would get to be part of a supergroup called SuperNova.
One of its members? Gilby Clarke.

Just looking at the trajectory of Bowie so far, I'd say he's been getting worse every single time we've ranked him.
We don't rank Bowie by himself again for another six years...though we will see Bowie again before then.

Fun fact: David Bowie signed to an independent label for this album, and they ended up shutting down since they couldn't supply for the demand for an artist that big.

I'm trying out something new again with the stats. I've added a second graphic that displays how everyone's stats changed from the first set to the second set. It shows if your closeness got worse (more positive) or better (more negative) and in what ranges you lost songs during the last set.

80. Suede - Metal MickeyThe guitars certainly had a metal vibe. The grinding and so forth. I liked this one. 79. Michael Penn - Long Way DownThis sounded exactly like the kind of bore fest I would tank...and I did. My fellow tankers are the ones I expected to see there. For years I thought this guy was Sean Penn's brother? 78. X - Country At WarBarely misses my top half. X surely has had stronger songs. 77. Paul Westerberg - World Class FadPretty catchy was all it had going for it. 76. Supreme Love Gods - Souled OutI enjoyed the vocals, but the song didn't stand out among of 50 others that sound like it. 75. The Lemonheads - Mrs. RobinsonI remember this one was a big hit. Blows Simon and Garfunkle's folky original out of the lemon tree. That's for sure. 74. Starclub - Hard To GetI love that guitar melody after the chorus. This song gave me that "Damn that's a great first listen" effect. I'm not afraid to upgrade those first time listens If I really love them, So there you go. 73. The Connells - SlackjawedI like this one. Started singing along even tho it was a first time listen. I have to upgrade a song that does that to me. Kinda like early Gin Blossoms sound before Gin Blossoms came around. 72. Buffalo Tom - SodajerkMore first time listens. Songs with more guitar vibe sound better to me anyway. 71. Sting - If I Ever Lose My Faith In YouLike Red said. Chorus is the most memorable part of this song, but I do love Sting vocals too. 70. Midnight Oil - Outbreak of LoveFirst time listen. This sound isn't for them. Infact it sounded a bit like Aerosmith "Girls Of Summer". Musically not vocally. I didn't ask for it, but I would have preferred "Beds Are Burning part II". 69. The Juliana Hatfield Three - My SisterThere are worse female sung songs on this RD than this. Nice guitar melody but lyrics are kinda lame. 68. Chris Isaak - Can't Do A Thing (To Stop Me)I started previewing songs from this list from 100 up. This started out in my bottom 10, but I kept pushing it up after listening to every other song. True Story. 67. The Candy Skins - WembleyI prefer this vibe when ranking songs from this list. I was left with three good songs to put in my top 50. This one just missed the grade. BTW, who are these bands and why didn't we ever hear from them again? 66. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Not Sleeping AroundI enjoyed this one quite a bit too. That ever present guitar melody pushed the song into my top 40. 65. INXS - Beautiful GirlNot the biggest fan of This INXS song, but it somehow it ended up 25 slots higher than I remember putting it. Note to self: Proofread these lists before sending. 64. Jesus Jones - T he Devil You KnowFirst time listen. It wasn't anything special. This guy had some other song that I disliked quite a bit more than this one. 63. Soul Asylum - Black GoldThis is a melodic wonder. I knew you guys would make it miss the top half. You are all wrong. Not a bad for me in reveals. 62. David Bowie - Jump They SayNot the most memorable Bowie hit, but it was jumpy....and had brass. Much better than that dark stuff he released now and then. 61. The - Dogs of Lust (this one is for you bangwave) :kii: I'm glad the better one is still in this. This attempt at blues rock was epic fail.

Both of Sting's songs this year should've stayed on Adult Contemporary; they were really poor fits for Alt. Fields of Gold was higher for me, but not by very much. It's funny when you recall the album's third single, though

80. Suede - Metal Mickey This one grew on me a little with repeated listens, but I'm still not too sad to see it eliminated.
79. Michael Penn - Long Way Down Loved this one off the bat, it's my second favorite discovery here. I really thought it would do better.
78. X - Country At War It's solid, maybe I overranked it a little.
77. Paul Westerberg - World Class Fad Solid musically, not sure how I feel about the lyrics.
76. Supreme Love Gods - Souled Out Another one that grew on me a little.
75. The Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson I love the original version of this song, and I like what I've heard of the Lemonheads' own songs, but this cover never did much for me.
74. Starclub - Hard To Get This one was decent, nothing more.
73. The Connells - Slackjawed Ditto.
72. Buffalo Tom - Sodajerk I see a pattern here.
71. Sting - If I Ever Lose My Faith In You I thought this was solid, maybe about on par with "Fields of Gold" for me, but I do agree that neither really belonged on Alt.
70. Midnight Oil - Outbreak of Love Not the best I've heard from them, but it's still solid.
69. The Juliana Hatfield Three - My Sister I enjoy this song despite the very "on the nose" nature of the lyrics.
68. Chris Isaak - Can't Do A Thing (To Stop Me) Another decent but forgettable song.
67. The Candy Skins - Wembley Ditto again.
66. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Not Sleeping Around This one's pretty solid, but stayed around long enough.
65. INXS - Beautiful Girl I think this song is fantastic, not to mention definitely better than anything else we've ranked from INXS so far. Was hoping for a better placement.
64. Jesus Jones - The Devil You Know This is not bad, I like "Right Here Right Now" a good amount more though.
63. Soul Asylum - Black Gold I don't love this one quite as much as I used to, but it's still a good song.
62. David Bowie - Jump They Say I was pleasantly surprised with this one, it's on par with his '80s hits for me.
61. The The - Dogs of Lust The wrong The The song went out first IMO, this one is solid but I didn't care too much for their other one. I suppose that one's more typical for them though.

And there it goes beyond the clouds* Edition:
80. Metal Mickey---Well, this was an attempt at something. At what, I'm not quite sure but it didn't work.
79. Long Way Down---I'd take the Robert DeLong song over this one. But it wasn't bad at all.
78. Country at War---Another song that wasn't bad at all for a first listen.
77. World Class Fad---Musicianship was solid, but the lyrics detracted a little.
76. Souled Out---Another song that was a solid first listen, but I can only take a pretty good song so far in one of these lists. Still better than the WCW pay per view.
75. Mrs. Robinson---Please forgive them Mrs. Robinson, they have no way to deal with a fun cover that's better than the original. Woah woah woah. Rest your soul, Mrs. Robinson, a few of us dug every second of this. Yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah.
74. Hard to Get---Another nice first listen from a group that either this was their one hit or they have more hiding on us for future years. Hoping for the latter.
73. Slackjawed---This result left me slackjawed. This was a very good first listen. In all honesty, it's my second favorite first time listen. This fits right into the format and sounds great.
72. Sodajerk---Kinda nonplussed by this reveal. It's decent but unmemorable.
71. If Ever I Lose My Faith in You---Well, you lost your faith in this one kinda quick. I feel like this was a very pop-esque ballad about love and desperation but it doesn't feel out of place here. And yeah, it's a bit better than Fields of Gold. Don't expect me to be as generous when we rank it again in Active.
70. Outbreak of Love---Wrong Midnight Oil goes out first. It was decent, better than their other one anyway.
69. My Sister---I feel like the lyrics cover the complex nature of siblings trying to deal with each other. Maybe a bit on the nose, but I'd argue they work. The musicianship helps.
68. Can't Do a Thing to Stop Me---It's not bad, but it's no Wicked Game (which I hope you treat well when we do get to rank it).
67. Wembley---What, no Fraggle Rock jokes? Anyway, I dig Shazam's debut comments for a lot of these. Not bad song that ended up in a fine enough position.
66. Not Sleeping Around---I wish this had stayed another night. The guitars really sounded good and the song had a more polished manner than did Syrup.
65. Beautiful Girl---This was the good song from INXS for this round. May have overranked this one a tad, but it's their best outside of Elegantly Wasted so far. But I think we'll see better ones, starting next year.
64. The Devil You Know---Sadly, this just missed out on the great finds medal podium. But it's a good song from an artist who's known for Right Here Right Now...which I'm nervous that I might not care for it like I did when I was younger.
63. Black Gold---I guessed this during the B clue because it sounded like lyrics from Thrice's Black Honey. That factoid was more memorable than this song which was OK, but kept sinking as other songs got heard.
62. Jump They Say---Surprise, I kind of liked a David Bowie song. The horns and other organic instruments helped...I guess it does flash back to his 1980s songs. There's another pleasant shocker coming in my list and I expect someone to call me on it. Don't worry, I'm prepared.
61. Dogs of Lust---Yeah, you picked the right song by The^3 to exit first. It was decent enough, but if the other one is more typical of their material, then this is a band that I might have to go through later on.
Extras:
Would have loved to rank Cantaloop. Another one of those melodic rap tunes that we could use more of today, I'm thinking this would have done better than Lucas's number because of its smooth blend of jazz and hip hop.
*I guess none of you could guess where those lyrics came from. Perhaps we rank them next year?
