Awww Kate Bush!! I agree that many songs from The Red Shoes were really subpar and sounded dated, but I thought and still think, that Eat The Music is better than Rubberband girl. Oh well. I wonder, will we be able to rank songs from The Dreaming? That's a masterpiece of an album. I don't know how far back we will go, or if she even charted with those singles.

The Sensual World might challenge for my #1, one of my favorite Kate songs

Billboard’s Alternative chart (called Modern Rock back then) only goes back to August? 1988...HOWEVER, I have done quite a bit of research into other magazine’s charts prior to that...I loved discovering a bunch of “old” music, even songs by bands I love but hadn’t heard because they were from soundtracks or some other various artists collection...I would very much like to continue these rankdowns all the way through the 80s

Alright I was going to try to be active tonight and play along instead of throwing together in one big post but got distracted and didn't go through with that whoops.
98: Sweet Lullaby- I actually quite like this one! It's a very weird and kinda pretty song, even if a lot of the sounds used in it haven't aged all that well. Can't say this is something I'd ever go out of my way to listen to, but as a weird little piece of chart history I dig it.
97: Believe- Kinda surprised to see this in the bottom 4? I mean I don't like it very much either and find it completely forgettable, but still.
96: Being Simple- I mean, this is kind of what I expect of forgotten moderately well charting songs of the early 90s. Pleasant enough, but I've forgotten everything about it.
95: She Kissed Me- Darby was one of the best characters in Stardust Crusaders honestly, this song is lame.
94: Everything in the World- I was listening to this while walking down the creepy dark hallway to the upstairs bathroom at work. I found myself wanting to like it but there was just something about it that was not doing it for me.
93: Trout- Aww, now, I actually did like this one a decent bit. The rapping isn't great at times and the whole thing does sound kinda dated, but like, not really in a way I find unappealing? And the whole "round and round and round" hook is super catchy. I dig it.
92: The Ugly Truth - Not one of Matthew Sweet's best. I always struggle to remember how this one sounds.
91: Thing of Beauty- "man this sure was some music "
90: Iron Lion Zion- I mean, I'm just as confused about this as everybody else. I don't dislike the song though, it's kinda nice.
89: Dizz Knee Land- Alright y'all just did this one wrong. I love this song.
88: Stand Above Me- I mean. It's uh fine I guess. I don't have a problem with it. I should probably listen to more OMD.
87: Numb- Hmmmmmmmmmm. Well uh this was *my* favorite U2 song in this rankdown at least :}
86: The Gift- As much as I love Kick, not too much after that album has done too much for me. This was my favorite INXS song here though.
85: Taste It- Nahh, doesn't do it for me.
84: Behind the Sun- Huhh. I forgot this song existed and went top 10. I don't know it's just a weird song.
83: I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)- Kinda surprised this got as far as it did, but I do like this song a lot. It's just so lame and campy and weird it can't come across as anything but charming to me. Also
82: Eat the Music- This is abysmal. Wtf Kate Bush
81: Walking Through Syrup- Ned's Atomic Dustbin are kind of a cool band, I like their instrumentals, a lot more energetic and punky than I would normally expect from this brand of early 90s rock. Also just learned this band has 2 bass players, very neat.
Extras Ruined in a Day- This probably would've been my highest ranked New Order song if it had made it. Big fan. Too Much Information- I like both the Duran Duran songs here. This one, not so much. Love See No Color- Wow you mean to tell me this was a song that charted at the bottom of the alt chart in 1993, no way Lazarus- Y'know that wasn't too badddd What's Up- Yeah I do like this song, get off me Sunshine Smile- Oh well this was a pretty good first listen here. Wish I had listened to this one sooner, I'm into it. Mary X-Mess- Ah I remember this one. I've never really cared for it. It's My Life- Aaaaaa nonono, we didn't need this. Stockholm- Oh yeah I forgot about this song. I do like it decently though. Waiting for the Sun- "Chart Peak: #3 Chart Weeks: 29" Wow, and it somehow missed the year end list?? That aside, I do quite like this song. It will be in Active 93 at least. Wild Wild Life- First listen here, actually liked this more than expected. Has a nice energy to it. Be Still- Yeah this sounds like a charity single. That said the bass work is pretty damn good. Dollar Bill- Oh hell yeah. This one would've been very high on my list if it had made the final cut. They're Here- Huh, as intolerable as I find Unbelievable this was actually a pretty cool song. A lot heavier than I had expected. Saturday Night- Another one I used to like back in the day that I've since forgotten about. I should go listen to some Ned's Atomic Dustbin, they have some pretty quality stuff.

100. UB40 - Can't Help Falling In LoveWTF? What did this band ever do to you guys? "Red Red Wine" hello? To start off this has some beautiful lyrics. I get a knot in my throat every time I listen to Elvis's version. How can this be hated by the same group of haters? Is it the music? 99. 808 State/UB40 - One In TenSeriously overhated band, but this one is shit. Not because of UB40, but because of that GOD forbidding noize in the backround . What the hell is that? Acid House? 98. Deep Forest - Sweet LullabyF U C K worldbeat. 'nuff said. 97. Lenny Kravitz - BelieveWhat wrong with this song? I like this one. Different sound for Lenny Kravitz but very aesthetic. Reminded me of that cover Alice Cooper did of Beatles' "Because". This is not a good start for Lenny. 96. The Judybats - Being SimpleOh no! I have a feeling you all gonna start tanking nice melodies. 95. Terence Trent D'Arby - She Kissed MeAre we seriously tanking anything related with Dreadlocks now? Anyway, this blows the piss out of that "Wishing Well" and that other crap hit of his. Terence should have incorporated more electric Lenny Kravitz fire in his songs. 94. Squeeze - Everything In The WorldI'm seriously terrified of known 80's icons tankers when we do these RDS. :o This is a bop and that's that. 93. Neneh Cherry - TroutI loved "Buffalo Stance" this had none of the fun of that song. 92. Matthew Sweet - The Ugly TruthThis one was a very uninspired Mathew Sweet song part 5, but it didn't deserved to be tanked. 91. Hothouse Flowers - Thing of BeautyThis was anything but a thing of beauty. Who were they trying to be U2 ballad? Fail. 90. Bob Marley - Iron Lion Zionand the dreadlock tanking continues. Not many "weed" fans here? Are there? 89. dada - Dizz Knee LandI thought this would be in the bottom 10. Sounded like a bad cover of a Soul Asylum song. 88. OMD - Stand Above MeI don't care about the dreadlock tanking, but lay off my 80's icons. You "old" people. 8D 87. U2 - NumbGreat! The correct one (that U2 should never have recorded) out first. This seriously left me numb. 86. INXS - The GiftThis was far from their best. I upgraded for Vocals alone. For me to put INXS this low means this song needed more brass. 85. INXS - taste ItThe 80's tankers are seriously on a mission here. This one had some mean harmonica. 84. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Behind The SunThis out before "My Name Is Un Melodic Piece Of Garbage"?83. The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)You know I used to watch TV back then so songs from shows like 90210 and Melrose place always sounded great. There was even a show called the Heights based on a group. 82. Kate Bush - Eat The MusicThis is me hating tropical sounds. Then, and in today's pop. 81. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Walking Through SyrupWhat's even more mind boggeling is me and Daryl the Beryl sharing the same brainwave when we heard this song. :kii: Anyway, Nice guitars. I don't ask for more. *These bottom 10 reveals were kinda random. but "My Name Is Un Melodic Bowl of Vomit" making the top 80 is the what the F U C K of the night.

Extras:New Order - Ruined in a DayIt has melody. You'll always got that from an 80's iconic band, but the song didn't blow me away. Duran Duran - Too Much InformationHell yeah! I love Duran Duran. I would have put another Duran Duran song in my top oh.... That's too much information. :kii: The Farm - Love See No ColourThis wasn't bad at all. Has some Morrissey vibes. I like these vocals. The Boo Radleys - LazarusNice guitars melodies, but a tad tooooooo "Slow mo" for me. 4 Non Blondes - What's UpI hated this stupid song, and I'm gonna tank it when it shows up. True Story. Adorable - Sunshine SmileFirst time listen. Cool song. Sounds a bit like that indierock jams I sometimes chart. Love that bass at the 2 minute mark. Sun-60 - Mary X-MessOOHHHHH. I love it. Crafty Title. Sounds like Nth Degree - "Morning Wood". Download? Check. Dr. Alban - It's My LifeI hated this kind of dance music and vocals tones. Ruined Hi Energy's and Freestyle's chances of becoming the dominant dance music of the 90's. Just like grunge crashed my Hair Metal party. 8D New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Stockholmbest part of this song are the British accents. The Jayhawks - Waiting for the SunSounds great for The Melrose Place soundtrack. Nice mellow song. Wailing Souls - Wild Wild LifeSounds like a song many of you would tank, and I would put in my 60's for fun vibe alone. Peace Together - Be StillAside for the cameo vocals,This was useless to me. Screaming Trees - Dollar BillI don't like this band's vocals. Not then or ever. EMF - They're HereEMF sounded like an elektronik mudd fart. Definitely a song I would have loved to drown in my tank of travesties. Ned's Atomic Dustbin - Say Amen (Saturday Night)I like it. It's a uptempo and has a punk vibe to it.

so with my sleep schedule as it is now I'm basically missing reveals every day so some scattered thoughts on this set
- glad to see that shitty ub40 cover be #100, thought it would have a few more fans
- I wanted to like "sweet lullabye" more but the woman's voice was such a turn off
- "being simple" existed, I guess, which can describe a lot of the songs that went out this set lol
- "trout" had a decent instrumental but neneh cherry and michael stipe making a song about sex ed was not what I was expecting
- surprised the matthew sweet song here was so low but it's probably my least favourite of the songs we've ranked by him so far so I don't mind lol
- I thought there was a chance that I'd be the only bottom ten on that hothouse flowers song for some reason, glad it wasn't higher
- "iron lion zion" sounded exactly like what I expected a bob marley song dug out from the archives over a decade after his death to sound like
- I liked "dizz knee land" for some reason? probably could have put it a little lower in my edit but whatever
- I fucking died when I saw the "chacarron" embed for "numb", appreciated what they were trying to do but it didn't work at all
- inxs were not on top form with any of their songs here at all
- "behind the sun" has a cool bass intro but the rest of the song just exists
did better than I thought I would this set, honestly
also especially for someone who hasn't hosted a rock chart rankdown in over a year, you're doing really good, shazam

100. Can't Help Falling In Love - Not surprised by this ranking, but I don't think it's deserved. It's not better than the original, and it really didn't belong on Alternative, but it's still a well-produced pop-reggae cover that I (dare I say) can't help enjoying.
99. One In Ten - This definitely seemed like the type of song that wouldn't fare well here, but I liked this one pretty well too.
98. Sweet Lullaby - I guess I could see why people would like this, but it was really off-putting to me. And I liked the Enigma song.
97. Believe - I don't mind this, but I'm okay with it being in the bottom 5.
96. Being Simple - This song is okay, but the competition was tough.
95. She Kissed Me - Now here's the other song that I really disliked. Was hoping for something more like "Wishing Well", instead I got this really lame excuse for a rocker.
94. Everything In The World - I agree that it's no "Pulling Mussels", but I still enjoyed this. I guess their style always strikes a nerve with me even when they're on autopilot.
93. Trout - I can see why people hated this, but I think it's a really cool song.
92. The Ugly Truth - This was pretty dull, he definitely has better songs.
91. Thing of Beauty - I enjoyed this, not one of the best songs here but I don't think it deserved bottom 10 at all.
90. Iron Lion Zion - Maybe I overranked it a tad, it might not be on the level of his top classics, but I still enjoyed it a good amount.
89. Dizz Knee Land - Pretty ridiculous song lyrically, I wouldn't say I hate it, but it couldn't escape my bottom 10.
88. Numb - This didn't deserve to be so low. As far as weird U2 experiments go, I'll take this over "Discotheque" or "Get On Your Boots" any day (and I don't even really hate those).
86. The Gift 85. Taste It - These two went out in the wrong order, not that it matters much when they're back to back, but I liked "The Gift" pretty well whereas "Taste It" was kind of annoying. Now I hope their other song doesn't show up anytime soon.
84. Behind The Sun - I thought this would have done a little better. Can't say I've ever really been able to get into their '80s era stuff, but this one is pretty cool.
83. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) - This song is way too much fun for me to hate. At least it isn't bottom 10.
82. Eat The Music - This wasn't bad, but wasn't really good either.
81. Walking Through Syrup - Pretty solid song, but I can live with this position.

Most publications just published an albums chart prior to 1994.

Wait, I'm in the Top Half of Rankdown Closeness? Edition:
100. Can't Help Falling in Love---Wrong UB40 song goes first. But I do get it (and placed it in my bottom 5). Soulless corporate cover plugging the 1993 movie Sliver. Which is only appropriate considering Sliver is a soulless corporate cover of Rear Window.
99. One in Ten---Yeah, this one was worse. A sonic travesty that has no place on any rock chart Active or Alternative, even in 2019. Bye, song. Oh, and hello Perfecto.
98. Sweet Lullaby---Blame the vocals, but it felt like a bad cross between Enigma and Enya. Either one is fine on their own, but combining them? Nah.
97. Believe---I'd normally advocate for Lenny here, but this song is a bit too weak for its own good. Hope better things are to come for Are You Gonna Go My Way.
96. Being Simple---I didn't mind the twee lyrics, but the vocal performance here did knock a few points off and placed it in my bottom 10.
95. She Kissed Me---I don't mind Wishing Well, but D'Arby does give off this arrogant vibe that doesn't set well with me.
94. Everything in the World---Yeah, this is a pretty inoffensive song that I didn't mind sticking around another day.
93. Trout---Yeah, I dig Neneh Cherry (Buffalo Stance was fun) and Michael Stipe (A good amount of REM). But together, in the same song, about sex education? Hmm. This feels as odd a pairing as the Another Way to Die song for Quantum of Solace. Still, it was better than that Missy Elliott song that ended with a minute PSA about safe sex.
92. The Ugly Truth---Oof. The ugly truth is now I'll have to put Girlfriend under tank watch.
91. Thing of Beauty---Oof x2. Much like Ugly Truth (not the movie, ew), I liked this enough to be top ranker. Interesting, people, interesting.
90. Iron Lion Zion---Didn't know this was a decade after Marley's death, but I didn't think it sounded bad. Have no clue what the title means though.
89. Dizz Knee Land---Advice to rock bands everywhere: please don't do puns in titles.
88. Stand Above Me---This was kinda just there to be honest.
87. Numb---I should retitle this song Dumb. What can you say about a song that even Bono wouldn't sing? I love how The Edge's attempt at vocals just makes him sound like he's bored. And then add in the electronic effects and voila, one of the worst U2 songs recorded.
86. The Gift---Why did Michael Hutchence sound like he sang in a phone booth? The history behind the album is way more interesting than the song itself. And yeah, I saw some of the INXS series. It also featured Brooke Burke as co-host.
85. Taste It---Wasn't expecting this one out so quickly. I think there was a BIG difference in quality between The Gift and the songs from their previous album. The best song is still around, though.
84. Behind the Sun---Eh, this was a bit better than y'all thought, but it's not significantly better. No complaints about the ranking, though.
83. I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)---Wasn't much of a How I Met Your Mother fan (it was OK in short doses, but I preferred Community). But I DO remember this being the trailer song for Benny and Joon. Catchy and fun as hell.
82. Eat the Music---A bit too twee for its own good, a song that emphasized goofiness over catchiness. I am glad to hear that we'll hear more from her soon enough.
81. Walking Through Syrup---The Ned's songs were nice finds, but I did feel the other one was a bit better. That can stick around awhile along with Slackjawed.
Extras:
An EMF song in Alternative? Unbelievable, OH, what's ya number? You'll have to wait for 1993 Active to find out what I think of What's Up.

90. Iron Lion Zion---Didn't know this was a decade after Marley's death, but I didn't think it sounded bad. Have no clue what the title means though. It's a reference to the holy land in Rastafarianism, since it was recorded during Marley's later political years. I'm pretty sure they only called the song that so Disney wouldn't sue them like they did with the band Microdisney.

As for Dizz Knee Land, yeah, I'm sure it was about Disney's aggressive legal team. But still, not a fan of its title.
