Drake Ties The Beatles for the Second-Most Billboard Hot 100 Top 10s
6/17/2019 by Gary TrustChris Brown's "No Guidance," featuring Drake, starts at No. 9, marking Drake's 34th top 10. Drake ties The Beatles for the second-most top 10s in the Billboard Hot 100's 60-year history, 34 each, as Chris Brown's "No Guidance," featuring Drake, debuts at No. 9 (on the chart dated June 22). Only Madonna boasts more Hot 100 top 10s than Drake and The Beatles, with 38. (Reflecting the collaborative nature of hip-hop, "No Guidance" is Drake's 12th top 10 as a featured artist. Madonna and The Beatles sport lead credit on all their top 10s.) Here's an updated look at the acts with the most top 10s since the Hot 100 began on Aug. 4, 1958. Most Hot 100 Top 10s 38, Madonna 34, The Beatles 34, Drake 31, Rihanna 30, Michael Jackson 28, Mariah Carey 28, Stevie Wonder 27, Janet Jackson 27, Elton John 25, Elvis Presley 24, Lil Wayne 23, Whitney Houston 23, Paul McCartney 23, The Rolling Stones 23, Taylor Swift 21, Eminem 21, JAY-Z 20, Chicago 20, The Supremes Drake has notched all 34 of his Hot 100 top 10s in just under a full decade. He first reached the region with his debut entry "Best I Ever Had," which zoomed 27-3 (on its way to a No. 2 peak) on the chart dated July 4, 2009. He achieves the milestone the fastest, besting Madonna, who took 16 years, seven months and two weeks between her first weeks in the top 10 with her first such hit ("Borderline" in 1984) and her 34th ("Don't Tell Me," 2001). The Beatles logged their first 32 top 10s, all as an active band, in just six years, four months and a week, from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" in 1964 to "The Long and Winding Road"/"For You Blue" in 1970. Following the group's 1970 breakup, it added "Got to Get You Into My Life" in 1976 and, its 34th top 10, "Free as a Bird," in 1995, 31 years and 11 months after the Fab Four's first visit to the tier. Not to take anything away from Drake's accomplishment, but comparing how he accumulated his 34 top 10's to the way the Beatles (or Madonna for that matter) accumulated theirs is like comparing apples to oranges. It's just not the same.

I know what you are saying
However, Just for fun, another stat.
Madonna's 38 hits from 1984-2012 (28 years) Beatles from 1964-1996 (nearly 32) Drake 2009-2019 (a little less than 10 years)

Also important that everyone remembers the Beatles didn't release dozens of their most famous songs as singles, thus incapable of charting.
Hell, one could argue Madonna's 'biggest' hit wasn't able to chart, either.

The fact that her 38th visit to the top 10 came nearly 28 years after 'Borderline' peaked at #10 is also worth noting. Attachment Deleted

Yah, there should be a pre-digital/-streaming-era list and a digital/streaming-era one. Aside from multiple tracks from an album being able to chart for acts at/near their commercial heyday, there's the prevalence of collaborations/featurings in the the latter era.

Hell, one could argue Madonna's 'biggest' hit wasn't able to chart, either. It charted in the UK, where she's had an impressive 63 Top 10 hits so far. By comparison, the Beatles had 28 UK Top 10s while Drake has had 16 UK Top 10s to date. Attachment Deleted

That's never going to happen and you know it. Billboard records set in the 80's will remain and can be broken in any other decade. Separating records by eras or decades will make things really messy and Billboard will never have that.

It's just not the same. You can make the same case for how the Beatles released a crazy number of albums in the 60's and as a result sold tons of records and scored tons of hits because it was something that could be exploited by groups/solo artists as famous, successful and as popular as they were at the time. It parallels to how Drake has dropped an album every year in the streaming era and has ''exploited'' his power and potency as a streaming giant. It's the same thing. It might seem unfair, but I'm sure tons of other artists who saw the Beatles releasing numerous albums and selling millions of records and scoring countless hits felt the same way. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Also important that everyone remembers the Beatles didn't release dozens of their most famous songs as singles, thus incapable of charting. Hell, one could argue Madonna's 'biggest' hit wasn't able to chart, either. But back then, artists who only had one huge single could release an album with nothing but filler and end up selling tons of millions of albums because the only way people could get ahold of the massively successful single was to buy the album. Different people have used the system to their benefit in different generations. There's nothing new under the sun.

Any list can be created with any context.
How many would Drake have had during earlier era's vs. How many the Beatles/Lady Madonna would have had if they released the bulk of their songs in the last ten years
hard to say but fun to speculate

Debatable
But the question would be: What chart action would it have seen had it charted on its own?
Other than the B side to the 12" single of 'Angel'

^"Into the Groove" peaked at No. 6 on R&R airplay, without a push from the label, with stations started playing it from recording it off of MTV until the 12-inch arrived; it hit No. 1 on Variety's Singles Sales chart, where "Angel" charted separately; and the 12-inch sold 600,000-plus units. Given how Madonna fared on the charts at the time, with a radio push, No. 1 easily could have happened, as it was a track not on an album. Its classic status has come in the recurrent-0airplay life, where it's persisted as her first- or second-most-played track for years.
thegreatdivine- Billboard somewhat compensates for the changes in era by weighting on the all-time lists. Of course it won't change what the records are, but it's been posting commentary/context when reporting lists info.

It's just not the same. I see what you did there, even if I'm not sure it was intentional.
It does leave me to wonder what probable top ten songs the Beatles never released as singles.
Here's the list I think are likeliest, based on maintained popularity and contemporary covers that did well on the charts: - Michelle (it won a Grammy as song of the year, even though the Beatles never released it)
- Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds (#1 for Elton John with a less commercial version)
- All My Loving (never a single in the US, but it went to #1 in Canada during the early days of Beatlemania)
- Norwegian Wood
- Here There and Everywhere
- Back in the USSR
- Helter Skelter
- You Won't See Me (#8 for Anne Murray)
- Fool On the Hill (top ten for Sergio Mendes in a Latin-flavored cover)
- Drive My Car
- Here Come The Sun
- In My Life
- Rock And Roll Music
- I've Just Seen A Face
- When I'm Sixty-Four
- While My Guitar Gently Weeps
- You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
- Oh! Darling (a hit for Robin Gibb of Bee Gees!)
- Money
- I'd love to say A Day In the Life, but it may have been too much for 1967 radio.

In the mid 60’s Capitol probably could’ve released every song of theirs as a single and half of them would hit the top 10 tbh

Once the Glee Cast started racking up those chart entries, all bets were off in terms of records. Of course, Drake has been far more successful than GC, though he has benefited much from the streaming era and his endless sea of collaborations/featurings.

Realistically, adding The Beatles 34 top tens to Paul McCartney’s 23 solo top tens and there’s a 57 top tens record nobody may ever approach. Well, maybe Diana Ross... PS Happy birthday, Paul!

LOL! Honestly, it never occurred to me until you pointed it out. Good catch! Great list of possible additional Beatles singles (maybe in some alternative universe). ;)
