Yes. This is really happening. 2
Come as You Are Nirvana
1
Black Metallic The Catherine Wheel
An odd, unexpected winner in arguably the most stacked year ever for Alternative, but hey, I love the song anyway.
I wonder if "Smells Like Teen Spirit" will win the 1991 Alternative rankdown.

peacebone You did a great job compiling the songs. It nice when an RD goes our way. I'll enjoy this slight taste of victory, cuz I'm sure to get ass reamed in the Active 1992

Kriss Kross keeping The Red Hot Chili Peppers out of #1 is the WTF of the week. In 1992, "Jump" became the #1 song on to Billboard Hot 100 on April 25, and stayed there for eight weeks, while "Under The Bridge" peaked at #2 on June 6 for one week. "Under The Bridge" also spent seven weeks at #3, as early as May 23 and as late as July 18. Here are the weekly positions for "Under the Bridge" during its entire 26-week duration on the Hot 100, from April 4-September 26, 1992: 80, 62, 35, 24, 12, 8, 6, 3, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 8, 15, 20, 23, 25, 30, 31, 34, 36, 44 Damn.

I'm more appalled to know "Jump" stayed at #1 for 8 weeks.

Fat Chance. I think you will have better luck betting that I will be one of that song's highest rankers.

My number 7 won, I can't complain, the song is very cool. I also like Come As You Are, but I did rank it at a much lower position, so you do the math lol
I was expecting the years closer to the 80's to be more shitty, but I was SO wrong, luckily! Can't wait for the next one!! ♥

10. Pretend We're Death (56): Slightly under-ranked this one. It was a hit in our rock radio stations. I hadn't heard it in ~18 years. I like it, but I liked other songs more when I did this RD. I would put it in my top 40 now. 9. A Letter To Elise (39): This one didn't make my personal chart back in 1992, as I considered it a bit too boring. I've grown to like it much more and appreciate better the lyrics and vocals. At this point in the RD there were many songs I liked a bit more, but I don't mind seeing this in the top 10 at all. 8. Happiness In Slavery (92): I can say this was the biggest disappointment in this RD. When I was grouping songs by tiers, I automatically put this in my middle tier, with the hopes that this could make it further. There are several NIN songs that I do like quite a bit, including The Perfect Drug (a personal chart-topper), Closer, Hurt. However, this one was devoid of any trace of melody or decent vocals. Any interesting musical elements here and there were then buried by electronic noise. Quite surprised this piece of trash made it to the top 10. NIN have pretty good stuff, but if they have trash, they go directly to bottom ten in my book... 7. Midlife Crisis (58): If only this had been A Small Victory, I wouldn't be disappointed. This one, despite interesting production and melodically elements, had far too average vocals that severely affected my appreciation of this song. 6. Jeremy (13): This one was in my top 10 up until the end, when I opted to give some extra support to other songs that I felt needed some extra push. This is one of Pearl Jam's best. Eddie does not have the best voice, but he knows how to emote, and he did it very well here. The music and melody were also pretty good, as were the lyrics as well. A classic. 5. Hunger Strike (23): I hadn't heard this song in eons, likely more than 25 years. It was a great re-listen. Another strong rock song with powerful but emotive vocals, and strong rock production behind it. Great to see it in the top 10, although it would've been much better to have this behind PJ. 4. Under The Bridge (5): I remember being greatly surprised when I heard this song. I had heard Give It Away --which I HATED back in the day. To go from that to UTB was a big whaaat?! This became their first of more than 5 personal chart-toppers. A big hit in pop radio stations back home, and a song with a lot of personal memories from last school year. Great music here, as well as melody and vocals (including background). 3. Nearly Lost You (77): I fluctuated a lot in terms of where to rank this first listen. I had it in my top 50 at some point, but then other songs revealed themselves as more interesting and complex than this one. Not bad, just... there. 2. Come As You Are (4): Well, at least I had a couple top 5s in the top 5 :) One of my favorite Nirvana songs. 1. Black Metallic (41): I actually thought I had ranked this in my 20s. Oops! It was one of my favorite discoveries in this RD, to the point of having already downloaded it. The vocals, vibe, melody, really captivated me from the first listen. With a few more listens it would've creeped into my top 20. Despite my relative low ranking, I'm quite happy to see this winning this RD! Thanks peacebone for hosting this RD. It was very interesting and fun to participate in an Alt RD!

After seeing how long Black Metallic had still been in a couple days ago I gave it another listen and I must say I severely underranked it. It should’ve been in my top 20. Very cool to see this song beat Nirvana.

Now that the dust has long settled, I'd - as always - like to thank everyone who submitted a list and everyone who followed along with the results. Having to host two large rankdowns almost immediately after each other is definitely not the easiest of feats, but the dedication and motivation that the rest of you all provide is reason enough for me to commit. This was another excellent journey through the early days of the Alt charts, and I'm so glad to see an underdog like "Black Metallic" take the win. Despite how dominant it was throughout most of the submission process, it did get dethroned very briefly near the end, but this result truly shows that every list counts. What an utter thrill it was to watch. Anyways, I can't even tell you when I might be hosting another rock chart rankdown...but of course, I'll still be participating. Now's where I'd normally reveal who the next host (or in this case, hosts) is, but they've already revealed themselves. One last time, thank you all so much! By the way, here's the public spreadsheet (which I've also now linked in the OP).
