We begin tonight's extras with an interesting one. Another huge pop hit (#4 on the Hot 100, #1 in the UK and top 10 in a bunch of other countries) that actually made the Alt charts...and I do like it quite a bit, would be in my top 40 at least. EXTRA

"Work For Food" was definitely better than either of their 92 songs. Of course, none of them compare to "Anything x2" (which I'm amazed didn't chart at all) stick around for 1986 Alt...

85. Planet Love (43): This was one of my favorite discoveries. I really liked the modern dance-rock beat 84. Move Any Mountain (16): !!! This was one of the biggest songs of the year in our rock stations this year. That intro became background music for weekly or annual charts, commercials, etc. The music still sounds as good as back then. This wasn't my favorite song by The Shamen though. My favorite was Boss Drum (personal chart-topper). Well, their 1992 album Boss Drum was full of jams! 83. Hey That's No Way To Say Goodbye (100): This was a clear bottom 5 for me. His vocals were surprisingly bad here, and the song was just utterly boring and plain. There were a few songs that I can consider much less melodic, but at least they had something interesting in terms of music or sound. This one didn't. 82. Ghosts of Texas Ladies' Man (67): Interesting discovery. Nice yeehaw rock moment here, with good vocals. I wish the chorus had more dynamism... 81. Divine Thing (24): Awww...This was a major hit back home, crossing over to pop radios. I've always liked the rock and dance combo that was a key element of several Modern Rock hits of the day. The background vocals and ad-libs in the last minute were also a good addition. Their follow-up Pleasure was also quite popular, which led radios to play their older cover of "I'm Free" which would become their most popular song, still played in some radio stations. 80. Lover Lover Lover (44): This was by far my favorite Ian song in this RD, and the only one that actually fit the bill of an Echo type of song. A pretty good discovery. I loved the nostalgic melody, vocals and music, despite the repetitive chorus. 79. She's Mad (22): I've been a Talking Heads fan since the late 80s. I especially appreciated their fusion efforts and the incorporation of Latin elements in several of their songs. This was an even bigger fusion mess -and that's what I loved! Funk, rock, and salsa? Give it to me!! And better if there are vocals full of attitude, like David's :) This was love at first listen back in 1992 --but I knew I was gonna be in the minority here 78. What Are We Gonna Do (80): This song had potential with its Oasis-like instrumentation, but the lyrics and vocals brought it down several notches to me. 77. You Don't Understand Me (45): I like this type of fast, dynamic rock music, plus the vocals and music sounded quite good too. It took me a bit to get it, as I initially ranked it in the 60s, but the more I heard it the more the hook got stuck in my head. 76. Sax and Violins (31): Another song that I liked since I first heard in 1991. Not as strong as their biggest hits, but I've always liked the freshness of the music, production, melody and vocals. 75. Spiritual Heights (90): This is not bad, but just pointless IMO. A bit more electronic, but Donna Summer did this cover in a much more interesting way and with even better than the pretty good vocals from Chrissie. 74. Suck My Dick (68): I had this in my 80s at the beginning, but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it --well, more the music than the vocals. 73. It's A Shame About Ray (72): I've always thought this had potential to be a good melodic pop-rock song, but was left half-cooked 72. Dyslexic Heart (75): Cute song with a catchy hook, but not interesting enough for me to rank it higher. 71. Galileo (86): Cute song with good harmonies but production is a bit disappointing and amateur sounding to me.

85. Planet Love - The DylansThis song was not gonna tanked with that intro. Very upbeat. 84. Move Any Mountain - The ShamenThis song tanked itself on my list. This should have stayed on some European 90's dance list. One more elektro travesty and I'm in the clear.83. Hey That's No Way to Say Goodbye - Ian McCullochPassable Alternative Rock. Not much wrong with it, but I wouldn't come back to it any time soon. 82. Ghost of (a) Texas Ladies' Man - Concrete BlondeI loved the western vibe here. Reminded me of "I Wanna Be A Cowboy". 81. Divine Thing - The Soup DragonsOh you all can bite my wire. Don't you remember this one from MTV? This is an awesome guitar jam. BTW, I wonder if Butterflies & Hurricanes picked up the Andy Taylor "Take It Easy" vibe that I did? 80. Lover Lover Lover - Ian McCullochI had no idea these wee L eonard Cohen covers. I'm pretty sure this is much more melodic than Mr. Cohen's original. 79. She's Mad - David ByrneDavid's vocals really rubbed me the wrong way here. Song was sort of a train wreck too. 78. What Are We Gonna Do - DramaramaNowhere as cool "Anything Anything", but I like the Beatle-esque vibe here. 77. You Don't Understand - The House of LoveWhat the hell are you all looking for in music? 8D This one rocked. The psychedelic vibe was very mesmerizing. 76. Sax and Violins - Talking HeadsThis is showing up right on time. It sounded kinda scared to become an actual melodic song. 75. Spiritual High - MoodswingsI knew this was Chrissie, but I didn't care cuz the only mood I get from those percussion elements is the mood to click it off. I call this comatose music. 74. Suck My Kiss - Red Hot Chili PeppersHow the hell do the Red Hot Chili Peppers not get at least top 50 here? This is cool 90's groove. I feel like saying Suck my...., but I won't. 74. It's a Shame About Ray - The LemonheadsJust one shy of my top half. Very melodic sing a long here. 73. Dyslexic Heart - Paul WesterbergI knew PULSE wouldn't find much use for this melodic wonder. This is an example of a song that stays in the same melody all the way through, but somehow works because of the guitars and nanana's. 72. Galileo - Indigo GirlsFirst time listen. I didn't find much use for these Indigo Girls. You are lucky I gave this an #80.

EXTRA:Stay - Shakespear's SisterThis had a cool European heavenly sound. I can't explain why? I just kinda dug it. Welcome to the Cheap Seats - The Wonder Stuff What's that? Bagpipes. It's those bagpipes that make it sound pretty decent. The Only Living Boy in New Cross - Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machineif you can make it through that intro this actually become 80's radical. The worst part are the vocals. On a Plain - NirvanaFirst time listen, but sounds like Nirvana "Party Rock" jam part 3. Not too shabby. Ultra Unbelievable Love - Robyn Hitchcock & The EgyptiansNot even an audio MV on youtube. That's how much of a mark this band left. I didn't like this live version at all. Sugar Ray - The Jesus and Mary ChainThe guitar grinds are what I liked. The percussion is questionable. So this is where Sugar Ray got his name? Lithium - NirvanaKinda simple but a ,bit decent with the yeah yeah's. It gives the song power. That doesn't mean I'll find much use for it on an Active rock chart, but I would have given this one top 50 love here. Breathe Deeply Now - This PictureThis one grabbed with its intro. Great vocals too. Id put this one higher than Nirvana that's for sure. Heavy Fuel - Dire StraitsThey tried to capture that "Money For Nothing" guitar fire glory with this one. Good song with great, but forgettable lyrics. How is that? They were not put in the right order. This needed Sting in the backups singing 'I want my VH-1". Silent All These Years - Tori AmosPub Piano ballads were big in the 90's huh? Low Self Opinion - Rollins BandThis kinda rocks and is a tad rebellious. Sounds like RHCP's with Henry Rollins on vocals. The Sweater - Meryn CadellSounds like a 1968 leftover. Music is cool, but F U C K that vocal delivery. Reva's House - Los LobosIt ain't bad , but aside from "La Bamba" soundtrack, I didn't find much use for this band. Murder, Tonight, in the Trailer Park - Cowboy JunkiesI'll take the Concrete Blonde cowboy vibe, and you guys can have this one all to yourselves.

Once again, word wall is behind the spoiler tag! {Spoil-tastic}#85: I thought this was fine. shrug #84: The longer this song lasted, the more sure I was that it would have a high standard deviation...but geez, second highest? Even I wasn't expecting that. #83: "This shouldn't have been the first of his Cohen covers to leave." Yep. This is also the closest I've come to really enjoying a solo Ian track so far. #82: Concrete Blonde are capable of so much better than this. #81: Yeah, um, I'm not looking forward to the dominance of the Madchester scene. #80: I probably should have ranked this a little lower, to be honest. Not even close to the best cover of this song. #79: I liked this more than one of the Talking Heads songs. #78: "Work for Food" was fine...this was a challenge to get through at times. Can't say I was fully expecting this to be my last bottom ten, but...sure, okay. #77: The fact that we're not getting to rank "Shine On" or "Destroy the Heart" is the real tragedy. #76: Easily one of the worst Talking Heads songs...certainly one of their worst charters. #75: The bottom rankings on this song do not surprise me at all. I think that I appreciated this song more than I liked it, but I still liked it a decent amount. #74: WOW. I wasn't expecting this to be high, but damn. I think the biggest surprise, though, is that this wasn't even one of the 20 highest SDs. I thought it was a mortal lock to have a high standard deviation. #73: The Lemonheads sure existed. #72: Totally understandable why this song is low. I've heard worse from Paul as a solo act, at any rate. #71: Oh, I wish I could have ranked this higher.
EXTRAS: "Stay" is a very interesting song. It's not one that I love or anything, but I've always admired the fact that this weird little song was a TOP FIVE POP HIT. I don't think it's much of a surprise that I would have treated the Nirvana songs and Tori well. "Lithium" was my favorite Nirvana song for about a month, but it was a fun month.

"It's A Shame About Ray" and "Dyslexic Heart" are both very good IMO. Maybe that just means there are a bunch of great songs I haven't heard?
On the other hand, I'm not complaining about "Suck My Kiss" doing relatively poorly. That song really wore on me over the years

#70 isn't a top 20 highest SD, but it's still an interesting reveal to kick things off with. Only three people ranked this song in their top 30...but two are top 10s, and the third is very close to also being one. Seven more top half ranks, as well. Six bottom 20s, but only one is a bottom 10. This song also has an interesting movement path: it spent several lists in the bottom 10, including at least one list in the bottom 5.
