This is my favorite Babyface album. Love all the tracks, especially "Soon As I Get Home". That was one of my fave songs from my childhood. This was his second album after "Lovers". It was released on July 23, 1989. Tender Lover contains Babyface's debut Top 10 hit, "It's No Crime", which reached #7 on the U.S. Hot 100 and later single "Whip Appeal", which reached #6 in the same chart. To date, Tender Lover is his highest charting R&B album as it topped that chart for eight nonconsecutive weeks; "Tender Lover" and "It's No Crime" were #1 R&B singles from this album. On June 28, 2001, Tender Lover was certified 3x Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Tender Lover was a critical and commercial success, reaching number fourteen on the US Billboard 200 and opened at number one on the Top R&B Albums chart. Babyface received numerous nominations for Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist at the 17th American Music Awards and three Grammy nominations, the top-ten US singles "Whip Appeal" received a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, "It's No Crime" for Best R&B Instrumental Performance and a nomination for Producer of the Year with L.A. Reid.

I had this cassette or maybe the cd?? I was 12 at the time. I was OBSESSED with "It's No Crime" and instantly liked the title track as well. "My Kinda Girl" was good. It's nice. Did they put it out at the time? At the time I think I was into "Can't Stop My Heart". It kind of sounds like "It's No Crime" listening back. I was into "Whip Appeal" and skimming through it again I like "Soon As I Get Home" too. I may have to pull out the cd again and revisit this.

"It's No Crime" and "Tender Lover" were both #1 R&B hits. "Whip Appeal" peaked at #2.

It's really hard for me to pick a favorite Babyface album - he has so many KILLER songs on his albums. And this one is no exception. WHIP APPEAL is my shit; I'm sure there's a thread for this song I've already slobbered on.
