Drake's 'Care Package' Primed for No. 1 Debut on Billboard 200 Albums Chart

Drake is on his way to a ninth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, according to industry forecasters.

Those in the know suggest his new Care Package odds 'n' sods compilation could earn more than 100,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 8. The set, which was released on Aug. 2 via OVO Sound/Republic Records, collects 17 of Drake’s stray tracks -- many of which were never officially released and only available via SoundCloud or YouTube.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Aug. 17-dated Billboard 200 chart (where Care Package may bow at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 11.

Drake has previously hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Scorpion (five weeks at No. 1 in 2018), More Life (three weeks, 2017), Views (13 weeks, 2016), What a Time to Be Alive with Future (one week, 2015), If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (one, 2015), Nothing Was the Same (one, 2013), Take Care (one, 2011) and Thank Me Later (one, 2010).

Other albums aiming for significant debuts on next week’s Billboard 200 include Lil Durk’s Love Songs 4 the Streets 2, Skillet’s Victorious, Tyler Childers’ Country Squire, and the Descendants 3 soundtrack. Meanwhile, rock band Tool could see four of its albums re-enter the chart, led by Ænima, after the band released most of its catalog to digital retail and streaming services on Aug. 2. The act may also see one of its albums hit the Billboard 200 for the very first time, as the Opiate EP might debut on the tally. Opiate was released in 1992, and though it never charted on the Billboard 200, it went on to sell 1.27 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music.

Great example of how a chart position (or lack thereof) doesn’t necessarily reflect the success of a project or track. It is fascinating how it could sell 1MM+ units, yet never crack Top 200 even for one week.

Drake achieves his ninth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as his new archival compilation album, Care Package, premieres in the top slot. The set, which was released on Aug. 2 via OVO Sound/Republic Records, launches with 109,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 8, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 16,000 were in album sales.

Care Package collects 17 of Drake’s stray tracks — many of which were never officially released and only available via Soundcloud or YouTube.

Drake extends his own record for the most No. 1 albums this decade, as all nine of his leaders have arrived since 2010. Care Package is also the first No. 1 album for OVO Sound, the label co-founded by Drake. All of Drake’s previous albums were released via Young Money/Cash Money/Republic.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new Aug. 17-dated chart (where Care Package bows at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's websites on Aug. 13.

With Drake notching his ninth No. 1, he continues his remarkable run on the Billboard 200. He’s charted 11 entries on the list, and just two of them have missed the top slot. This March, his So Far Gone mixtape, which was originally released for free in early 2009 but never commercially issued or distributed to streaming services until earlier this year, peaked at No. 5 following its official release. Then, back in 2009, the So Far Gone EP — a distillation of the original So Far Gone mixtape — marked Drake’s first commercial album release and peaked at No. 6.

Among artists with the most No. 1s on the Billboard 200, Drake is in legendary company. He’s tied with Garth Brooks, Eminem, Madonna and The Rolling Stones with nine each. Ahead of them: The Beatles (19), Jay-Z (14), Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand (11), and Elvis Presley (10).

Care Package’s first-week units totaled 109,000. Of that sum, 90,000 were via SEA units, equating to 115.5 million on-demand audio streams for its songs during the tracking week. The remainder of the album’s starting unit sum came from TEA units (3,000) and album sales (16,000). Notably, the latter figure comprised only sales via digital retailers like the Apple iTunes Store. Care Package did not have any merchandise/album bundles or a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer in play — as has become the norm for many No. 1 albums. (Care Package is only available commercially as a digital download. No physical release for the set, on CD or otherwise, has been announced.)

At No. 2 on the new Billboard 200, Ed Sheeran’s former leader, No.6 Collaborations Project, rises one spot with 49,000 equivalent album units (down 16%). Billie Eilish’s previous chart-topper, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, also climbs one rung (4-3) with 47,000 units (up less than 1%).

Lil Durk scores his first top 10 album, as Love Songs 4 the Streets 2 debuts at No. 4 with 44,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, 4,000 were in album sales. The set’s entry was driven largely by streaming activity, with the album garnering 39,000 SEA units in its premiere frame (equaling 52.7 million on-demand audio streams for the set’s songs). The rapper has tallied five previous entries on the Billboard 200, going as high as No. 14 in 2015 with Remember My Name.

Chris Brown’s former No. 1 Indigo holds steady at No. 5 with 37,000 equivalent album units earned (down 9%), while NF’s The Search dips from No. 1 to No. 6 in its second week, with 36,000 units (down 72%).

The Descendants 3 soundtrack takes a bow at No. 7 with just under 36,000 equivalent album units earned (with 23,000 of that sum in album sales). The soundtrack to Descendants 3 was released on Aug. 2, the same day its parent film premiered on Disney Channel (which was also the first day of the chart’s tracking week).

All three of the Descendants soundtracks have reached the top 10: the first debuted at No. 1 on the Aug. 22, 2015-dated list, while Descendants 2 debuted and peaked at No. 6 on Aug. 12, 2017. Two other franchises that started on Disney Channel that also nabbed at least three top 10-charting soundtracks: Hannah Montana (three TV soundtracks, plus a theatrical film soundtrack) and High School Musical (two TV soundtracks, one theatrical film soundtrack).

Lizzo’s Cuz I Love You dips 7-8 on the new Billboard 200 (34,000 units; down 8%) while Chance the Rapper’s The Big Day falls 2-9 in its second week (33,000 units; down 70%).

Closing out the top 10 is a re-entry for Tool’s Ænima at No. 10. The set – which debuted and peaked at No. 2 in 1996 – was released via digital retailers and streaming services for the first time on Aug. 2, along with most of the rock band’s catalog. The album bounds back onto the list with 33,000 equivalent album units earned (up 5,900%), of which 18,000 were in album sales.

For decades, the phrase “No. 1 with a bullet” has referred to a song or album that zooms to the top of the Billboard charts. Given current music industry practices, “No. 1 with a T-shirt” may be more accurate.

Lately, many artists — and their record companies — have been trying to game the system of ranking musical hits by including free downloads of new albums with sales of concert tickets, clothing and other merchandise. It’s a widespread practice, and the result is some confusion about what, exactly, the weekly charts are measuring.

Now some of the very people who have taken advantage of this strategy are complaining about it, and Billboard is under pressure to change the rules governing its charts.

The use of so-called album bundles — tacking a download or CD to another purchase — is an age-old sales gimmick in the music industry, but now it’s everywhere. Of the 39 titles that went to No. 1 last year, at least 18 were sold as part of ticket or merchandise deals. One of the most prolific bundlers has been the Houston rapper Travis Scott, who last year claimed the top spot by selling key chains, hats and access to concert tickets.

The next big bundler may be Taylor Swift. While her new album has no announced release date, her website is already accepting advance orders for it as part of deals for a hoodie ($65), a T-shirt ($40) and a smartphone stand (a bargain at $20), in hopes of its hitting No. 1 once it comes out.

At the same time, behind-the-scenes disputes have broken out between artists and Billboard’s chart referees when the trade publication deems particular deals out of bounds, potentially costing musicians their shot at the top slot.

Last month, there were two such disagreements: first when a Christian rock group, Hillsong United, lost out for No. 1 to Pink after some of its ticket deals were disqualified, and then in a bitterly contested race between DJ Khaled, a social-media star in the orbit of Jay-Z and Beyoncé, and the eclectic rapper Tyler, the Creator. Bubbling under the weekly chart competition is the question of whether the top positions are being determined by the popularity of a new album or the swag sold with it.

Billboard, whose charts are widely accepted as the last word in measuring the popularity of songs and albums, acknowledges the problem. It plans to announce this year that it will tighten the rules on merchandise bundling, said Deanna Brown, the president of the Billboard-Hollywood Reporter Media Group, a division of Valence Media.

Artists and people in the music industry, Ms. Brown added, “tell us week after week, month after month, that they want us to occasionally throw a flag on the field when necessary.”

The rise of album bundles may be a response to the explosive growth of streaming and the rapid decline of album sales. From 2015 to 2018, revenue from album downloads plunged by about 53 percent in the United States and CD sales fell by 52 percent, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Over the same period, streaming revenue more than tripled.

But the formulas that Billboard and Nielsen, its data partner, have adopted to reconcile the many ways that people consume music today have given artists and their marketers an incentive to push downloads and CDs, despite most fans’ preference for streaming. When it comes to the charts, each album a fan acquires — by itself or when tacked on to the purchase of a ticket or T-shirt — is worth about 1,400 times as much as any individual stream.

That has made bundling more appealing than ever to artists — even superstars like Ms. Swift, who could once reliably count on millions of CD sales. Not that she is new to bundling. In 2012, she had a deal with Papa John’s Pizza to sell her album “Red” with a large one-topping pie for $22.

One result is that the top chart position tends to go back and forth between artists with huge streaming numbers — like Drake or Post Malone — and those offering bundles.

The trend has led to some puzzling outcomes. In 2018, a ticket deal helped a year-old Bon Jovi album return to the top spot. And four months ago, the Backstreet Boys, a group that had not stood on the chart’s summit since 2000, opened at No. 1 with its fifth album since then, “DNA,” thanks again to a bundle for tickets to its summer tour. (The next week, “DNA” plunged to No. 24.)

Two weeks ago, the chart was held up by several days while Billboard studied the sales data of two new albums: Tyler, the Creator’s “Igor” and DJ Khaled’s “Father of Asahd.” Each had gotten an almost equal number of streams, so the contest for No. 1 largely came down to the validity of their bundles. Tyler offered clothing and even campaign-style lawn signs (“Vote Igor!”), while DJ Khaled’s album was included with sales of energy drinks through an e-commerce site, Shop.com.

After scrutinizing the two campaigns, Billboard gave the victory to Tyler. The magazine disqualified most of DJ Khaled’s bundled purchases, suspecting that some of the marketing by Shop.com and its corporate parent, Market America, had crossed a line by encouraging unauthorized bulk sales. One blog post from the company, for example, told its members to buy 12 packages to “push DJ Khaled and Market America to No. 1!”

Ms. Brown, the Billboard president, defended the decision. “In this particular instance,” she said, “we saw an organization encouraging purchases among their members by promising them material and organizational benefits.”

Both Market America and Roc Nation, DJ Khaled’s management company, said the decision had blindsided them. Desiree Perez, Roc Nation’s chief operating officer, also criticized the very practice of bundling, and Billboard’s countenancing of it, as a kind of weekly arms race that should be banned.

“We dispute their decision on behalf of DJ Khaled and, frankly, every artist who is forced to navigate bundling an album download with an inexpensive item that still effectively represents their brand,” Ms. Perez said in a statement. “It’s confusing and demeaning to the art.”

She added: “We’re obviously not fans of bundling, nor should anyone who cares about artists making music. But our hands are being forced by Billboard’s desperate, last-ditch effort to keep streaming from eliminating what’s left of music downloads.”

Market America, a so-called multilevel marketing company, has been criticized for its sales methods, such as requiring members to meet sales quotas. In a lawsuit filed two years ago, disgruntled former affiliates called the company a “pyramid scheme.” In an interview, Marc Ashley, the company’s president, denied that its members had sales quotas and dismissed the legal action as a “troll suit.”

To some extent, managing the charts has always been a cat-and-mouse game. In 2004, Prince gave copies of his album “Musicology” to fans who bought tickets to his tour. As a result, Prince earned his first Top 5 position in a decade and Billboard created a new rule, a version of which exists today: For a ticket bundle to count on the charts, the consumer must take a step to receive the music, like redeeming a coupon code. (No such rule exists for merchandise deals, however.)

“This is savvy gamesmanship,” said George Howard, a former record executive who is an associate professor of music business and management at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. “What’s new is that the industry is finding new ways to game a system that has always been gamed.”

Billboard has said it is still deciding how to revise its bundling rules, and has held a series of industry meetings in recent months on the matter. Many of those have involved major-label record executives, who tend to favor bundles as an essential marketing technique as well as a chart strategy.

Until those changes are made, the charts are likely to continue to be affected by bundling deals, like the merchandise offered by Ms. Swift and a ticketing deal for Madonna’s latest tour.

For those artists, a Billboard No. 1 album is a vital trophy. Despite the wide availability of streaming data from sources like YouTube and Spotify, the magazine’s charts remain the most recognized sign of popular success, both inside the industry and among fans.

Yet even that is changing, as new artists look for new strategies to engage with their fans and new indicators of success, said Brian Popowitz, the general manager of Black Box, a music marketing agency in Los Angeles.

“This is a first-class problem that affects the top-tier, 1 percent of artists,” Mr. Popowitz said. “I see a lot more artists saying, ‘I really want to do Instagram,’ versus saying, ‘I want a No. 1 Billboard album.’”

Tyler Childers Earns First Top Country Albums No. 1 With 'Country Squire'

Singer-songwriter Tyler Childers' new album, Country Squire, blasts onto Billboard's Top Country Albums chart (dated Aug. 17) at No. 1, marking his first No. 1 on the survey.

In its first week, ending Aug. 8, the set earned 32,000 equivalent album units, according to Nielsen Music. Of the sum, 24,000 were through traditional album sales.

Concurrently, Country Squire arrives atop Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, also marking Childers' first No. 1. On the all-genre Billboard 200, the Sturgill Simpson- and David Ferguson-produced set begins at No. 12.

For the 28-year-old Childers, who hails from Lawrence County, Ky., Country Squire is his second Top Country Albums entry, after Purgatory debuted and peaked at No. 17 in August 2017. On Americana/Folk Albums, Purgatory reached No. 4.

The first single from Country Squire is the bluegrass-tinged "House Fire."



Childers' new set dethrones Luke Combs' debut full-length This One's for You, which dips to No. 2 with 22,000 units with (3,000 sold), down 1%. Combs' LP has spent 44 weeks in the penthouse, the most among male artists, having passed Randy Travis' Always & Forever, which led for 43 weeks starting in June 1987. Only one title has spent more weeks atop Top Country Albums, which launched in 1964: Shania Twain's Come On Over, which dominated for 50 frames beginning in November 1997.

Meanwhile, Combs' "Beer Never Broke My Heart," the first single from his EP The Prequel, reigns on Country Airplay for a second week, increasing by 4% to 40.7 million audience impressions in the week ending Aug. 11.

"Beer" became Combs' record-extending sixth straight career-opening No. 1 Country Airplay single when it topped the Aug. 10-dated tally (in its 13th week, completing the quickest run to No. 1 this year).

"Beer" is Combs' fifth multi-week leader on Country Airplay. Of his six No. 1s, only his third, "One Number Away," led for a single frame (June 9, 2018). His longest run at the apex came courtesy of his most recent No. 1 prior to "Beer," "Beautiful Crazy," which paced the list for seven weeks starting on March 2.

'RAISED' RISES On Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, which blends airplay, streaming and sales data, Chris Young attains his 14th top 10, as "Raised on Country" strides 11-10 in its 27th week. The performance is sparked by its 11% hike to 32.4 million in format radio reach, as it hops 6-5 on Country Airplay. The song also attracted 2.1 million U.S. streams (up 6%).

"Raised" is Young's first Hot Country Songs top 10 since "Hangin' On," which reached No. 8 last November. It peaked at No. 2 on Country Airplay.

'LIVING' WELL Dierks Bentley notches his 25th Country Airplay top 10, as "Living" lifts 12-10 (21.1 million in audience, up 6%). Bentley is the 17th artist with at least 25 top 10s (tying Vince Gill's total) since the chart launched in 1990. George Strait leads with 61 top 10s.
