What is wrong with them by not releasing "Cruel Summer"? Yeah, how dare they not release a summer song... in the middle of winter... uh.

Probably one of the worst choices. Miss Americana, CS and Afterglow >> Your taste is amazing

Not surprised really. We all kind of saw this coming as the next single with the AMA performance and Taylor hinting at it wearing the suits at many events this year. As for how this we do, I can't see this doing much without some kind of remix to give a song a new favour to get it bigger.

It's called "Cruel Summer" because it's about the start of her relationship with Joe in the summer of 2016...I don't see what's so summer about this song (and what's so "winter" about "The Man"). Match with the current season may be a plus, but isn't a must imo.

Cruel Summer is a reflection on a past summer so it actually doesn't even make sense lyrically to be released in the summer. Nor is anything about the production remotely summery. It's actually very wintery in the same vein as a good chunk of reputation with the much fuller, richer, darker tones.

Ditto to the "Cruel Summer" chatter in terms of feel/proper release period.
Meanwhile, this easily continues the "should've been this" single trend the era has captured perfectly. The only way I see this being even a top 15 hit is with an interesting remix. Otherwise I see it barely scraping top 20 on pop.

"Cruel Summer" is a pop masterpiece whereas this is just kinda... there. Hopefully whoever decided this will reconsider. Whatβs giving me hope is that there hasnβt been *official* confirmation yet.

Making this a single continues her narrative. Her battle against SB1 and SB2 and her platform for gender equality dictates that "The Man" should be a single. Regardless of the commercial performance, this should be a single.

Well if the single decision was set in stone I think we would have an announcement already. This song also went for the "Top Hits" playlist on Spotify upon album release and it wasn't a single back then.
I think it's not a bad choice but I can't see it smashing. But then again I don't see anything else on the album truly smashing...

Y'all all know Cruel Summer is coming as the fifth single for the actual summer... right?

"Cruel Summer" is such an obvious fall single (sound and lyrical content) but if they're making it a single, they will do so in late May cause songs with "summer" in the title catch on just like the "Christmas" songs during the holiday season.

i'm not really surprised this became a single. it's not one of my favorites from the album, but understand its appeal. i just hope taylor doesn't end the era after this so "cruel summer" gets its moment to shine.

Y'all all know Cruel Summer is coming as the fifth single for the actual summer... right? If this is actually released and flops, I doubt there will even be a fifth single. She's not going to just keep releasing underperformers from this album indefinitely.

Y'all all know Cruel Summer is coming as the fifth single for the actual summer... right? Nope. I doubt we're getting a fifth single. Unless this winds up being a monumental smash, I don't see a fifth single happening. Honestly I'm expecting an entire new album by mid summer.

The meltdowns in here are annoying, this is to tide us over until the summer where Cruel Summer will be the single. Some of y'all need to calm down.

And again, I'm not sure why radio would be clamoring to play "Cruel Summer" if it's following two singles that missed the top ten on pop radio (and two before that that were relative disappointments). Honestly, I don't hear a huge smash in "Cruel Summer." Certainly not enough to revive an era. The obsession with that song is like "Getaway Car" all over again.

All I ask for is a pop song form Taylor Swift that actually has a chorus. Anything that's slightly more sophisticated than "me-me-me" or "oh-oh-oh" or "lo-ver".

I mean this will probably flop cause it's polarizing, and that hasn't worked at all yet for her. Same would apply to "Miss Americana".
"Cruel Summer" will probably flop cause it's a dated style and sounds nothing like what pop's playing these days. Scratch that, it sounds like "Cool" by the Jonas Brothers, which also flopped. "I Think He Knows" is also too dated sounding. It would've worked in like 2012.
"Afterglow", "Death by a Thousand Cuts", and "False God" are all pretty unique, but they're probably a little too slow to be a proper comeback single.
"Paper Rings" is cute, but probably a little too silly sounding after "ME!"'s performance.
"I Forgot That You Existed", "The Archer", "London Boy", "Soon You'll Get Better", "It's Nice to Have a Friend", and "Daylight" aren't really single material.
So I've said it before and I'll say it again... CORNELIA. STREET. It has a very similar melody to "Delicate", which also succeeded at turning an album around. It's one of her best written songs ever. It's catchy, but not in your face, and still has a fresh sound. The subject matter isn't polarizing. Smash waiting to happen.

I do love Cornelia Street. But, I'll stick with what I've said. The man NEEDS to be a single.

Terrible choice, if this is indeed the single. I know it fits her narrative best, but this will perform miserably on every format. The best choice would've been Cruel Summer, regardless of what time of year it is, because it has the most infectious (but not annoying) melody. A shame.

I'm not sure I understand the hate. This song did the best on streaming, and stayed in Spotify top 200 for almost 7 weeks. It clearly resonated with the GP to some extent!

This is apparently an unpopular opinion after reading the thread, but I think this is an amazing single choice. My favorite song off of Lover. Other choice would probably be "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince" just as its sorta reminiscent of her older material IMO which did smash.

This song did the best on streaming, and stayed in Spotify top 200 for almost 7 weeks. Most likely due to the massive amount of playlistings.

This is the problem with having an 18-track album which is full of wonderful and well-written songs. You'll always have people arguing about singles choices. So many different views, different opinions, it's exhausting. For once, Taylor is going with what the general public has shown admiration for. That's enough to convince me that this is a good single choice.
