Novelty tunes were bigger in the 70s than they are now

gikem- "You're the One That I Want" was written for the Grease film, thus it wasn't in the stage musical until after the film . :)
Glass Joe- that batch of four songs were notable hits upon their first releases, thus they'd be a different story than singles not faring that hot at first and then doing well years later.

Freddie Mercury’s Living On My Own was a #50 in the UK when it was originally released in 1985. In 1993 it was re-released as a remix (by No More Brothers) and it hit 1 in the UK, Ireland, France and Sweden. Dee do de de, dee do de de.

Wasn’t Latch by disclosure released in 2012? Yes but it blew up in 2014.

I was going to mention Red Red Wine by UB40 but someone already did. Another one i can think of is Paula Abdul's (It's Just) The Way That You Love Me. From wiki: "the song was originally released in its remix form as the second single from the album on August 2, 1988, by Virgin to minor success in the States. Following the breakthrough success of her next three singles, the song was re-released on September 15, 1989, under its original version to commercial success, becoming Abdul's fourth consecutive top three entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and to date, tying with "Straight Up" as her longest charting performance on the chart."

"I Love You So" by The Walters debuted on this week's Hot 100 - it was released in 2014 and got a second wind thanks to TikTok.

It depends on how big you define a 'hit' to be, but perpetual UK year-end mainstay 'Mr. Brightside' by The Killers somehow achieved a new peak of #23 on the ARIA charts last week. It's down to #49 today. Although if you look past its peak, it is certified 12x Platinum here so arguably it was already a massive hit and all it did was re-peak.

Lizzo “Truth Hurts” was released in 2017 but it didn’t catch on until 2019.

Jaymes Young's Infinity seems to be on its way. Released in 2017, it's now charting on Spotify and pretty decently.

Not to far after Red Red Wine…Sheriff did it with “When I’m With You” Released in 1983 and finally reached #1 in 1989… 6 years later…but the 80,s was a time when radio was able to create hits when a station would take a chance on a song then it would blow up in the rest of America…With today’s corporate playlists you don’t see that anymore

Jaymes Young's "Infinity" debuted on the Hot 100 this week. The song was originally released in summer 2017. I've been hearing it in those thirst trap TikToks for months now and thought that it was one of MARINA's new songs, the vocal in the chorus really does sound like her

"Hooked On You" by Sweet Sensation was originally released in 1986 but but a remix two years later and radio airplay (mainly on rhythmic/dance-leaning Top 40 stations) in 1989. "Your Loving Arms" by Billie Ray Martin was originally from 1994 in the UK but released in the US the following year. However, the song was a bigger hit chart-wise when it was re-released as a single in 1996 when stations like dance-leaning WKTU in NYC and some of the mainstream pop stations like KIIS in LA played it although the song was a hit during it original 1995 run in a few dance-leaning stations like B96 (WBBM-FM) in Chicago and WPOW (Power 96) in Miami. "Missing" by Everything But the Girl was originally released in late 1994 but didn't become a pop hit (specifically the Todd Terry remix version) until late 1995 and ultimately making Billboard's "Top 100 of 1996".

Frank Ocean's "Lost" is now Top 50 at Pop radio, 10 years after it was initially released. That song felt radio-friendly then.

Time to go with the obvious, Heat Waves was released in June 2020 but didn't become a worldwide hit until the Spring of 2021 and the US being the US, it took all the way until this year to peak.
Shout out to Cheap Thrills, originally released as a promotional single in December 2015, the remix with Sean Paul came out in February 2016 and didn't peak in the US until August 2016.
Also, also, Meet Me at Our Spot which came out in March 2020 but didn't become a hit until the fall of 2021.

Sybil's "Dont Make Me Over" was originally featured on her 1987 release Let Yourself Go. It was remixed and released a single in 1989. It peaked at #20 on the Hot 100.
