Really enjoying this one. Their best since VLV for me.

Viva La Vida is not only their best album, but probably in my top 20 albums of ALL time. While I haven't played it front to back in a while, it is such an amazing, diverse body of work. They experimented and got it right. I keep hoping they will surpass VLV.
Second Full Listen (first was in the airport coming home yesterday): 1. Champion Of The World (yup. best song on the album. absolutely beautiful, majestic, sad, etc. I'll even forgive him using a firework simile. at least it wasn't a metaphor, hehe. in the top 10 of their catalog of songs, easily.) 2. Orphans (This is quintessential Coldplay. The Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall of the album and I LOVE that song. The song makes me euphoric, even though the subject matter isn't really. It kinda gives hope.) 3. Daddy (I legit CANNOT with that piano. At first, I was like...huh? Why? But, Chris manages to turn something that could have been a cornfest into what I believe is a really personal song from the perspective of his kids. Truly heartbreaking stuff. Again, the piano. Also, that last 1 minute is just...sublime.) 4. Cry Cry Cry 5. Old Friends 6. Arabesque (this grew on me MAJORLY. Now, it's definitely one of the highlights of the album) 7. Church 8. Eko 9. Broken 10. When I Need A Friend 11. Guns 12. Trouble In Town 13. Sunrise 14. Everyday Life 15. Arabic 16. WOTW/POTP
What a REALLY wacky album if only the first 10 songs were included, but I get, for the most part, why the others were included. Anyway, another strong album, though I'm not sure I am buying the "best since VLV". I mean...it's easily their most experimental since. I would even say it's more experimental than that album, even. That album just had songs that shifted into other songs halfway through, making suites and managed to be even more grandiose than everything they released prior. Anyway, Mylo Xyloto was a better album. I might even like Ghost Stories and Head Full of Dreams more at this point, but that could change.

Also, this album is a grower and you have to be willing to sit through random curios and toss-offs (the medieval chamber music, the gospel, the doo-wop, the instrumentals) to really find the potency here, but damn, these guys really weren't ready to rest on their laurels and do the expected this time, so I applaud them for that ALONE. If the music were s**tty or poorly executed, it would be one thing, but it is very well-done. Despite being somewhat loose and shambolic, it manages to be tied together. I would say Sunset is stronger (it has the two best songs on it, after all), but...Sunrise has f**king Daddy. Actually, Sunrise is legit better. I don't know why I ever questioned that for a second, but yeah, I will probably slap an A- on this when all is said and done. I also like how they went back to acoustic Coldplay for some songs, for those who bitch that they have gone too pop. Guns, Daddy, Eko, Old Friends, and Everyday Life sound like they could be on their debut.

Triple-post but no one cares about Coldplay, so I will start campaigning for Best Stan next year. Anyway, I want Guy Berryman to fuck me like I stole his favorite guitar.

They covered Crystal Waters’ Gypsy Woman at a recent BBC concert. Very nice.

I enjoyed this album although I need to listen to it again because I was way too tired and out of it the first time. “Arabesque” is still one of my favorites and I really like “Champion of the World”. “Church” is really good and “Daddy” always makes me cry. “Trouble In Town” is also a big standout for me. I really like that one. It feels really deep.

This album is a masterpiece. I hope they'll win AOTY Grammy this year.
