03/10/2012 was really THAT week, with 7 'biggest songs of all time' entries in the top 40.
#6 We Found Love #16 Somebody That I Used To Know #23 Rolling In The Deep #26 Party Rock Anthem #28 Moves Like Jagger #30 I Will Always Love You #38 Call Me Maybe

There was a stretch of 52 straight weeks (from when Truly Madly Deeply debuted on 12/6/1997 all the way until 11/28/1998, the last week airplay-only songs were ineligible to chart - or pretty much the entire 1998 Billboard Year) where there was at least 4 biggest songs of all-time entries every week. At the peak, when The Boy Is Mine went to #1, there were 6 biggest songs of all-time entries, 4 of which were in the Top 10.

I wonder what's the longest stretch of time where not a single charting song is one that would become an all-time lister

I wonder what's the longest stretch of time where not a single charting song is one that would become an all-time lister That would be April 17, 1986 to September 29, 1990. Looks like that is going to expand quite soon!

For the chart week of Dec 4, 2021, here's how songs on the Hot 100 would fare in a Billboard all-time top 10,000. | | Chg | Title | Artist | | 24 | 24 | 0 | Levitating | Dua Lipa | 1,172,210 | 217 | 209 | 8 | Save Your Tears | The Weeknd & Ariana Grande | 865,600 | 443 | 422 | 21 | Good 4 U | Olivia Rodrigo | 749,760 | 459 | 448 | 11 | Kiss Me More | Doja Cat ft. I've said this before, but I think this is Levitating's last week on the chart. There'll be more Christmas songs charting next week, and I expect Levitating to be pushed out of the top 25 which is fatal at its age. A big jump by All I Want For Christmas Is You next week could lock that song in the top 600, and ensure its position in the next top all-time list (probably a top 1000 for the 65th anniversary in Aug 2023). Several other Christmas classics return to the chart but I don't think any will climb into the top 1000 this year.
Any thoughts on how the Elton John/Ed Sheeran duet Merry Christmas, coming out this Friday, is likely to do? I wouldn't be surprised to see it debut top 5. We'll see on the Dec. 18 chart.
LANDMARK: Cold Heart becomes the 50th song credited to Elton John to make the top 10,000. This does not include tracks where Elton is heard but not listed in the credits like That's What Friends Are For (Dionne and Friends), Bad Blood (Neil Sedaka), and Whatever Gets You Thru The Night (John Lennon). Elton's vocals on Cold Heart are lifted directly from his 1990 hit Sacrifice which is #5318. If the points for the two versions were merged, it would have 218,048 points, enough to get to #4252 all-time.
Thats What I Want by Lil Nas X is also unlikely to last another week. Pity, as it will stop just shy of the top 1000 at #10006 this week.

I guess by charting this week, Leave the Door Open probably locked its place in the decade-end Hot 100.

Honestly I'd consider the Decade's Hot 100 to be something more like 520,000 points for a lock, considering the 2000's was around 650,000, and current points may be .8 of the points from the 2000's/early 10's. Plus that would put 22 songs at a lock, which makes sense seeing as we are now 2 and a bit years into Billboard's definition of the decade.

Crazy that Blinding Lights almost got screwed out of the top spot, considering all the records it broke. Imagine if that one week it lost from the Christmas songs had made the difference. So my theory with this is that they used the lowest multiplier possible that would put its run at #1. They already knew it was objectively the #1, but since this GOAT update is off-cycle and the “dust hasn’t settled” to say for songs from this period (and 2021 hasn’t even ended) they didn’t want to do a high multiplier than have to lower it later on. There’s only 10~ songs with enough to points to make the Decade End cutoff and we are over 20% past the tracking period, meaning there should be 20~. I think they will definitely end up weighing this period higher in subsequent updates. The most important thing about multipliers is they create similar shares of hits from across the eras. The cut off for every decade’s top 100 if you assemble a decade end from each decade is always similar for top 100 (650-725k).

Is there a reason why The Twist has so many points when it only spent 39 weeks on the chart overall? Blinding Lights is barely above it in terms of points despite spending almost 60 weeks in the Top 10. I know BL benefitted from a weaker chart during it's run, helping it's longevity. But those points for Chubby Checker are ridiculous.

If you multiply The Twist’s stats by 1.7…
It has five weeks at #1, 43 weeks in the top 10, and 66 weeks on the chart.
As for Blinding Lights being multiplied by 0.75…
Just three weeks at #1, 43 weeks in the top 10 as well, and 68 weeks on the chart.
So these two songs would have the same amount of weeks in top 10. The Twist would have two more weeks at #1, which continues to seem to matter more than weeks on the chart in the decade-end.
The question may now be, how is Blinding Lights #1? I guess because the multiplier in 2021 is x0.8.

Elton's vocals on Cold Heart are lifted directly from his 1990 hit Sacrifice which is #5318. I'm surprised they weren't lifted from I'm Still Standing, which is now older than he was when it came out!

So this is terrifying!

The “dust hasn’t settled” comment makes me even more confident that there won’t be an all-time list update in Aug 2023. If the dust isn’t settled now, it sure as heck won’t be in less than 2 years from now, especially when some songs on that 11/6 chart may very well be still charting in Aug. 2023. I think 2024 or 2025 seems more appropriate for the next all-time update. Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if they skipped the mid-decade update and just waited until the 70th anniversary in 2028. After all, the all-time list has been updated 4 times since Aug. 2013. We probably don’t need a 5th in less than 2 years time.

@phileaglesfan: I disagree. I fully expect a 65th anniversary expanded list with at least the top 650 songs and possibly 1000. The recent Top 100 list is so short it’s effectively a placeholder until a fuller list in 20 odd months. Speaking of which I doubt any songs currently charting Will still be on the Hot 100 in August 2022, much less August 2023.

That would give the longest chart sitter the week ending August 6, 2022, as of then, 35 weeks or less. It’s possible, but not something I would count on.
The week ending August 5, 2023, it would require a song that just debuted to spend 87 weeks on the chart, the same as Radioactive.

I think the reason why Blinding Lights came in at number one in the GOAT by just a hair is 2019.
2019 was the strong year, 2020 was the weak year. Blinding Lights was from the weak year.
The two-year period is balanced out by the x0.75 multiplier.
On 2020 on its own, x1.0 would work, but as barely as a year can get.
Don't Start Now, the #4 song of 2020, has less points than every song that's been in an decade-end (updated that is, I'm excluding the 2000 version of the 1990s decade-end and the 1990? version of the 1980s.), even Forever by Chris Brown.
Meanwhile on 2019 on its own, you know which multiplier would work? x0.6!
Because the average of weeks spent by the sixth to tenth longest lasting songs in the top 10 times the multiplier is above 14 but below 18.
So x0.8 would also work on the two, so would x0.7, even on 2019 on its own!
On 2021 alone, at the moment, the highest possible multiplier is x0.9.
Also, Circles set a top 10 record too, and Blinding Lights certainly did not set one for #1. Some songs that have failed to make the decade-end have more spent weeks at #1, like the 1000th number one song, Born This Way, as well as Lady Marmalade, Can't Buy Me Love, and Black Beatles.

No shade, but I think you definitely put more thought into multipliers than even Billboard does lol. Billboard seems to prefer doing a multiplier for the Hot 100 only every few years, and not changing it drastically (i.e. x.80 to x.85 or x.75). They're not going to be putting huge thought into changing it every single year and going from as drastic as x0.6 in 2019 to x1.0 in 2020.

What explains the 1.6 to or from 2.0s that occurred in 1973, 1977, and 1985?

Those songs had waaaaaaay less overall longevity though. BTW spent a scant 9 weeks (after 6 weeks at the top) in the top 10. "Butter" by BTS may well be this new decade's (if not all time) poster child.

Songs that will very likely be in the 2020s decade-end: Blinding Lights Levitating Mood The Box Circles (interestingly, it wasn't quick to seem to have a chance of showing up in the decade-end) Rockstar Save Your Tears (still charting) Good 4 U Kiss Me More (still charting) Stay (still charting) All I Want For Christmas Is You (still charting)
Songs to expect to see there: Drivers License Leave the Door Open Bad Habits (still charting) Industry Baby (still charting)
Tossups: Don’t Start Now Butter Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree (still charting) Jingle Bell Rock (still charting) Easy On Me (still charting) Feliz Navidad (still charting) Sleigh Ride (still charting)
Small chance: Montero (Call Me By Your Name) A Holly Jolly Christmas (still charting) It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year (still charting) Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) (still charting) Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! (still charting) Underneath The Tree (still charting)
I doubt Billboard will want to put Christmas songs from the 20th century in every single decade-end from the 21st century, so they may just do something about it. We don't primarily follow The Holiday 50.

Well, I'm not completely moved (to my temporary home while the new house is constructed) but I've been able to unpack my tower and finally update the all-time chart based on the Dec. 11, 2021 chart.
Yes, I'm a week behind, and won't be able to work on next week's chart until (at least) Friday. Sigh. | | Chg | Title | Artist | | 209 | 204 | 5 | Save Your Tears | The Weeknd & Ariana Grande | 868,960 | 456 | 383 | 73 | Stay | The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber | 768,320 | 422 | 412 | 10 | Good 4 U | Olivia Rodrigo | 754,720 | 448 | 444 | 4 | Kiss Me More | Doja Cat ft. Travis Scott | 71,024 | 9541 | 9366 | 175 | Pepas | Farruko | 65,296 | 10006 | 9716 | 290 | Thats What I Want | Lil Nas X | 61,360 | 10514 | 9774 | 740 | Sleigh Ride | The Ronettes | 60,690 |
So with Levitating leave-atating the chart, there are no songs in the all-time top 100 currently on the chart, but I suspect Stay will correct that situation in January. Several Christmas song re-enter, and I need to manually look up where they were in the previous week. Sleigh Ride joins the top 10,000 a mere 58 years and 3 weeks after it was released on the day JFK was assassinated. (True story!)
Save Your Tears has already been announced as surviving to the Dec 18 chart, so it could still reach the top 200.
The two Rudolph songs (Gene Autry and Chuck Berry) are the two Xmas songs charting that are closest to the top 10,000. The Autry version could reach that level next week.

Do I get to create two all-time charts in a row?!? For the chart week of Dec 18, 2021, here's how songs currently on the Hot 100 would do on an all-time top 10,000 chart using the same methodology as Billboard used for their recent all-time top 100 list: | | Chg | Title | Artist | | 204 | 200 | 4 | Save Your Tears | The Weeknd & Ariana Grande | 872,080 | 383 | 323 | 60 | Stay | The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber | 797,120 | 412 | 401 | 11 | Good 4 U | Olivia Rodrigo | 758,960 | 444 | 432 | 12 | Kiss Me More | Doja Cat ft. SZA | 746,880 | 573 | 460 | 113 | All I Want For Christmas Is You | Mariah Carey | 734,915 | 1063 | 1022 | 41 | Bad Habits | Ed Sheeran | 609,280 | 1391 | 1264 | 127 | Industry Baby | Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow | 561,280 | 2073 | 1845 | 228 | Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree | Brenda Lee | 475,287 | 2609 | 2570 | 39 | Fancy Like | Walker Hayes | 388,240 | 2965 | 2729 | 236 | Jingle Bell Rock | Bobby Helms | 371,467 | 3216 | 2753 | 463 | Easy On Me | Adele | 369,216 | 3412 | 3370 | 42 | Way 2 Sexy | Drake ft. Future & Young Thug | 304,160 | 3594 | 3375 | 219 | Heat Waves | Glass Animals | 303,776 | 3976 | 3683 | 293 | A Holly Jolly Christmas | Burl Ives | 272,260 | 4247 | 4035 | 212 | It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year | Andy Williams | 240,285 | 4126 | 4042 | 84 | Need To Know | Doja Cat | 239,456 | 4174 | 4080 | 94 | Shivers | Ed Sheeran | 235,200 | 5005 | 4953 | 52 | Knife Talk | Drake ft. 21 Savage & Project Pat | 170,880 | 5125 | 5023 | 102 | You Right | Doja Cat & The Weeknd | 167,120 | 5215 | 5134 | 81 | Essence | Wizkid ft. Justin Bieber & Tems | 162,928 | 6424 | 5853 | 571 | Feliz Navidad | Jose Feliciano | 133,585 | 6448 | 5957 | 491 | The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas To You) | Nat King Cole | 130,376 | 6511 | 6065 | 446 | Last Christmas | Wham! | 127,460 | 6300 | 6136 | 164 | White Christmas | Bing Crosby | 125,102 | 6503 | 6387 | 116 | Beggin' | Maneskin | 118,624 | 6751 | 6664 | 87 | Girls Want Girls | Drake ft. Lil Baby | 111,760 | 7376 | 7043 | 333 | Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow | Dean Martin | 102,920 | 7712 | 7199 | 513 | My Universe | Coldplay x BTS | 99,360 | 7537 | 7410 | 127 | If I Didn't Love You | Jason Aldean & Carrie Underwood | 95,440 | 8080 | 7905 | 175 | All Too Well (Taylor's Version) | Taylor Swift | 86,000 | 8272 | 7925 | 347 | Smokin Out The Window | Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak) | 85,600 | 8100 | 7955 | 145 | Happier Than Ever | Billie Eilish | 85,200 | 8838 | 8352 | 486 | Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) | Elton John & Dua Lipa | 78,768 | 8904 | 8869 | 35 | Fair Trade | Drake ft. Travis Scott | 71,680 | 9774 | 9136 | 638 | Sleigh Ride | The Ronettes | 68,050 | 9366 | 9238 | 128 | Pepas | Farruko | 66,896 | 10514 | 9501 | 1013 | Thats What I Want | Lil Nas X | 63,760 | 10607 | 9713 | 894 | Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer | Gene Autry | 61,420 |
Gene Autry's Rudolph finally joins the top 10,000, but still not bad for a song that peaked nearly a decade before the Hot 100 was created.

Do I get to create two all-time charts in a row?!? In speaking of all-time charts, you don’t appear to have gotten my message. Well, have you?

Not that I like the song, basically because of the artist’s name, but The Reason from 2004 is the #115 song of the 2000s. Maybe you should update that.

Mariah's record-breaking third separate trip to #1 with the same song bounces All I Want For Christmas from the top 600 to the top 400 and likely to get into the top 300 next week. That's a level Stay achieved this week already.
Run Rudolph Run and Underneath The Tree could both get into the top 10,000 next week.

Her best song isn’t even a 1990s song. It’s a 2000s song.
I also remember seeing My All and bafflingly, I’ll Be There in the original 1990 decade-end. (Also bafflingly, Honey wasn’t there!)
