What tanooki sez for the all-time top 10,000 but with pretty colors! (For chart week ending Dec. 16, 2023) PS: tanooki , Billboard did it yet again! And the artist chart with the highest ever position change since I started keeping track: Mariah has overtaken Elvis for 4th place on the all-time list. Behind only The Beatles, Madonna and Elton John. Let's compare two songs that were #20 in the Billboard Year-End. Both of them peaked at number three.
#20 song of 1988 - Taylor Dayne - I'll Always Love You #20 song of 2023 - Boy's A Liar (pt. II) - PinkPantheress & Ice Spice
Just by looking at this, you might think these two songs have about the same number of points in the DE and GOAT, and they probably should. However, I'm pretty sure that is far from the case.
I'll Always Love You spent 6 weeks in the top 10 and 30 weeks on the chart, and Boy's A Liar (pt. II) 12 weeks in the top 10 and 22 weeks on the chart.
1988 has a x2.0 multiplier, which means I'll Always Love You has its weeks in the top 10 weighted to 12 weeks! That's the same as Boy's A Liar, or is it? First, let me tell you that the TW of IALY gets weighted to 60 weeks! That is longer than the amount a song can spend on the chart and then be in positions 26-100 (52 weeks)!
And to make matters worse for Boy's A Liar (pt. II), 2023 doesn't even have a x1.0 multiplier, it's a whopping x0.75 (less than half of x1.6 from some of the previous years to 1988!). That means BAL (pt. II) has it's weeks in the top 10 weighted to a whopping nine and its TW a laughable 17, which is actually less than a song can spend on the Hot 100 at any position (even if its mainstream success stops very early in its chart run).

I don't know about the weeks in the top 10, but 30 weeks on the Hot 100 in 1988 was an above average run. 22 weeks on the Hot 100 for a top 10 hit in 2022 is a below average run. It makes sense to me that "IALY" would be higher on an all-time list.

Just by looking at this, you might think these two songs have about the same number of points in the DE and GOAT, and they probably should. No they shouldn't. The GOAT list multis adjusts for how the top 5 or so songs in a given year perform. If anything, because turnover was much higher, I'd bet, for example, that the #100 on the Year-End for 1987 is stronger than the #100 for 2022 even without accounting for multipliers.

If I'm not mistaken, the only 2 1988 Hot 100 songs to reach 30 weeks were Breathe's Hands To Heaven & Taylor Dayne's I'll Always Love You. Bust A Move reached 39 weeks in early '90. EDIT: Prior to Soundscan, only 4 songs reached 39 weeks/9 months on the Hot 100.

See how unfair it would be for modern hits when it comes to song count in like a top 6500 (100 per year)?

Now the #100 1987 song would differ from what it was then. I know in 1990 BB gave #1 YE to Wilson Phillips "Hold On," even though Shadoe Stevens AT40 gave #1 to Nothing Compares 2 U & Hold On was #5. Now BB sides with AT40 & NC2U is #1 for '90. plankton5165 One other thing that came to mind is that in 1988 BB simply used inverse points to in YE ranks while now BB uses real points.

Thinking ahead, the chart dated Dec. 30, 2023 will cover sales, radio and streams for Dec 15-21, so lots of Christmas activity. The chart dated Jan 6, 2024 will cover the sales, radio and streams for Dec 22-28, so the 4 heaviest days of Christmas activity. (I consider any song that peaks this week to have peaked in 2023 for chart purpose.
So probably 2 more weeks of Mariah & Brenda at the top, (which will likely give AIWFCIY enough points to temporarily pass Last Night on the all-time chart) followed by the great Christmas extinction of the Jan. 13 chart. Will Jack Harlow return to #1?

It is largely intended to create a balance of eras in the top 500 or so, but after that, well, take a look: top | 50s | 60S | 70s | 80S | 90S | 00S | 10S | 20S | SUM | 100 | 4.00% | 9.00% | 15.00% | 13.00% | 19.00% | 12.00% | 21.00% | 7.00% | 100% | 500 | 4.00% | 11.80% | 21.80% | 15.20% | 16.00% | 13.40% | 14.40% | 3.40% | 100% | 1000 | 3.00% | 12.60% | 22.50% | 19.70% | 14.60% | 13.10% | 11.80% | 2.70% | 100% | 2000 | 2.90% | 15.50% | 23.70% | 20.50% | 13.40% | 11.70% | 9.75% | 2.55% | 100% | 5000 | 2.86% | 19.82% | 22.82% | 18.58% | 13.74% | 10.90% | 8.82% | 2.46% | 100% | 10000 | 3.13% | 21.10% | 23.05% | 16.54% | 13.33% | 11.20% | 8.86% | 2.79% | 100% |
The 1960s have 11.8% of the songs in the all-time top 500, but if you expand to the top 10000, the same decade has 23.05% of the songs -- nearly a quarter! On the other hand, the 2010's have 14.4% of the top 500 (and an even more staggering 21% in the top 100) but if the list is expanded to the top 10,000, that plummets to only 8.86%.
Looking at the top 500, excluding the 1970's there's a decent distribution of songs by decade. If the multiplier for 1973-76 were to drop from 2.00 to 1.80, it could be a little better. But overall, for the cream of the crop, it's not bad.

And finally, my last pre-Xmas update to the Top 1000 Artists chart. No big changes near the top in rank, but Mariah is probably two weeks away from overtaking Elton John for #3. Watch this space. Why do you guys use 0.7 multiplier...?! I have always used 0.8... Is it just to keep that one song every year from getting in GOAT top 5 but it screwed more songs' points.

Why is Taylor only #12 on the Hot 100 Artist list?! She's already #2 on GOAT Billboard 200 Artist list. Funny the gap is that large.

^Probably not unexpected. I think the main reason that pure album sales don't count toward the Hot 100.

Why is Taylor only #12 on the Hot 100 Artist list?! She's already #2 on GOAT Billboard 200 Artist list. Funny the gap is that large. A LOT of her Hot 100 entries were on the chart for 1 or 2 weeks, she "only" has 6 songs in the top 1000 of the GOAT chart (4 before this year). Also, according to thegreatdivine's list, Taylor has 260 cumulative weeks in the top 10 - which isn't much considering the number of her top 10s (49), and weeks in the top 10 bring the most points. average weeks in the top 10: Post Malone 17,45 Usher 15,16 Bruno Mars 14,55 The Weeknd 13,647 Katy Perry 13,642 Justin Bieber 13 Rihanna 11,31 Mariah Carey 10,82 Drake 5,06 Taylor Swift 5,03 for example, Taylor has 10 songs with 10+ weeks in the top 10, and Katy Perry has 11 even with 14 top 10s. On the other hand: 200+ weeks albums: 5 100+ weeks albums: 11 Midnights will get there next year She constantly has like 10 albums in the top 50 every week, and she's only behind The Beatles in weeks at #1 on the B200.

Why do you guys use 0.7 multiplier...?! I have always used 0.8... Is it just to keep that one song every year from getting in GOAT top 5 but it screwed more songs' points. Billboard has recently released some articles ranking artists' biggest hits following their GOAT methodology, and those articles give us hints about the weighting of the latests periods. From there, it's been deduced that the current multiplier must be x0.7 to fit with their rankings

Just by looking at this, you might think these two songs have about the same number of points in the DE and GOAT, and they probably should. No they shouldn't. The GOAT list multis adjusts for how the top 5 or so songs in a given year perform. 40.7% of the year is in. At the moment, this makes the top 5 per year of the 2020s the top 20. The song at the #20 position is Creepin'. Even that is about 100,000 points behind the #50 songs of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and the 2000s. If top 5 is what Billboard is going for, maybe they will consider raising 2022-2023 back up to x0.75. I was thinking top 10. I believe Billboard to take the averages of the 6th most weeks in the top 10 to the 10th most weeks in the top 10 of each year. And then they take these averages of a couple years and choose a multiplier that would make the product between 14 and 18. Example: one year, the average weeks of the 6th to 10th longest sitters in the top 10 in 11, the next year is 10, the year after that, it's 9. The average would be 10. x1.6 would be perfect, it would put the product right in the middle. 10*1.6=16. Again, it has to be between 14 and 18. This seems to apply to all the multipliers before 2022-2023. I'm not sure about 2022-2023. It was once thought to not be working because 2018-2020 was thought to have x0.85, which would be too high. Then, the remainder of 2018 was given x0.8 and 2019 and 2020 x0.75.

Until the high end stragglers like Last Night disappear, BB will probably keep the multiplier at 0.7. Nah, there are so many of them in 1977-1984, but nowhere near at all in 1985-1991, and in both eras, the cutoffs for the top 10 per year are similar, and not to mention relatively very high. Yup, not just in 1985-1991, but in 1977-1984.

Why is Taylor only #12 on the Hot 100 Artist list?! She's already #2 on GOAT Billboard 200 Artist list. Funny the gap is that large. Her albums have a longer shelf life than her singles.

With one week of holiday songs left on the next chart (covering Dec 22-28 activity), Mariah who is currently 80,104 points behind Elton John will not climb to third next week. But that seems inevitable in Nov. 2024.
Taylor this week overtook Rihanna to place just outside the top 10 all-time. Taylor is still more than half a million points behind Whitney to get into the all-time top ten.
Jack Harlow has climbed into the top 500. He is the artist with the most recent first hit to be there.

CREDIT AND TITLE CHANGE ALERT: Perry Como's Home For The Holidays has added singers and an orchestra to the credit and the year of recording to the title. It's not in the top 10,000 but could get there next year. And the credit on Frank Sinatra's Jingle Bells has changed yet again. Anyhow, the last week of Holiday Havok on the charts. Hoo-boy! Will things look different next week - 41 Christmas songs will disappear from the chart. Jack Harlow will return to #1 and hopefully, Stick Season will achieve top ten status. Noah Kahan is probably my favourite new act in years. A record 19 acts in the top 100 increased points this week. Ed & Elton's duet re-entry helped with that.
Took a minute, but Bobby Helms has returned to the top 1000 artists. I presume he would have been there in the 50's & 60's.

I definitely look forward to the returns &/ big jumps of Non-Christmas songs & their impacts on the GOAT charts these coming weeks. I think Flowers can now get the 24k+ pts needed for the GOAT H100 before going SRC.

Last Night is likely to enter the all-time top ten in two weeks.
The return of Flowers to the Hot 100 gives hope to those wanting to see it in the all-time Top 100. Miley is about 17,000 points behind #100 and earned exactly 7,000 points this week. If she can stay in the top 20 for the next 3 weeks, she'll make it.
By the way, if she does, the song Flowers will knock out of the all-time top 100 is Michael Jackson's Billie Jean. But, hey, the latter returned to the charts briefly in 2014 - maybe it could do so again.
