Just discovered this gem! Heard it on the radio in DC for the first time yesterday. I thought the rap part was Niki Minaj feature lol. I was like Nicki sounds a little different but catchy as hell. Found it on Apple Music this morning and it’s been on repeat. I need this to go #1!

I personally don't see much comparisons between her and Nicki. They start and end with "female that raps." Doja seems to be more firmly in R&B and pop than Nicki (and Cardi, Kim, Missy, etc.) ever was/is. Honestly, Doja seems more comparable to Lizzo. A more indie urban beginning of their career that morphed into an r&b/pop singing career with abundant rapping mixed in.
This does sound like it could have been something on a modern reimagining of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, but that era was definitely not the norm for Nicki's sound and is pretty evenly split between pop like this and straight rap. This sound has now been not only present in both of Doja's albums, but the main factor in both albums as well.

I hate that Luke is pure trash, but he makes the most polished candy-like tracks. I mean, this is pop confection. I miss this type of production dominating radio, and I wish Kim Petras could smash like this.

I hate how people can't take it when a new up and comer admires Nicki. she has been the standard for 10 years. any woman coming into the rap game is there because of Nicki, whether they say so or not. And Doja openly talks about how much she loves Nicki. It is clear to me that she has studied Nicki's flow and songwriting, and is adapting it to the current music landscape in her own way & doing a wonderful job at it. |
