I see that it's her only 90s non-Christmas album that has not been talked yet in the Albums section. It has recently turned 20 a few days ago. It was her 7th studio album that was released on November 2, 1999. This was also her last album she recorded with Columbia Records.
The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, with first week sales of 323,000. It was her first album in years to not reach number one. However, within a month, Rainbow was certified triple-Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of three million copies within the United States. Internationally, the album debuted atop the charts in France, and within the top five in Australia, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland. The album has sold an estimated eight million copies worldwide.
So, what were or still your fave tracks besides the singles from the album? My faves are Bliss, Did I Do That?, and Petals. I have to listen to the album again. It's been a really long time. My fave singles from this era are, of course, Heartbreaker, Crybaby, and definitely Can't Take That Away. When I was going thru alot of hard, trying times, I turned to Can't Take That Away for comfort.
I don't consider Rainbow to be in my top 5 Mariah albums, but I thought it was a decent album with a good, strong message overall.
Heartbreaker: #1 Hot 100, #2 Dance, #1 R&B, #36 Latin Pop, #21 Top 40
Thank God I Found You: #1 Hot 100, #1 R&B, #28 Top 40
Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme): #6 Dance
Crybaby: #28 Hot 100, #23 R&B
Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now): #1 UK

It's the worst of her 90s albums but has a very bright spots (Heartbreaker, Can't Take That Away, Bliss and Crybaby). I think the production of some of the songs feel cheap in contrast to its predecessors and "Did I Do That?" is still the worst song in her catalogue.

Easily her weakest album up to that point. The Capri trilogy was plagued by poor recording equipment, production, etc. It has some great songs but some clunkers too, and it was especially disappointing following her other 90's albums. It was rushed too.. "Heartbreaker" was set to be the lead single from All That Glitters (which ended up becoming Glitter), but Sony didn't want to wait to wait for the movie to put it out, and Mariah ended up writing and recording the rest of the album so they could launch "Heartbreaker" as the lead single. Despite the album being disappointing, this was a fun time to be a fan. She gave really fun interviews in the late 90's/early 00's.

I consider it Mariah's worst, I rank it at the bottom when we do those fan album rankings. It's especially glaring how weak it is when you compare it to the album it followed, which is the most beloved of all her albums by her fanbase and herself. That being said, I think for a rushed album it's not horrible. Still, it's jarring how as an album it has both complete gems ("Crybaby") and complete duds ("Did I Do That?"). I rarely listen to it top to bottom.

Not a great album for reasons already mentioned, but still a great addition to her catalog due to Heartbreaker, Bliss, Crybaby, and Petals/Rainbow Interlude.

I didn't become a fan until later (2002) but "Heartbreaker" had been pretty popular here and it was one of the first songs I immediately loved once I got deeper into her discography and got to know her beyond the music. All the interviews, the videos, the remixes, MTV skits, the tour, her personality during these two years are EVERYTHING. She was truly giving her all!
"Against All Odds" might be my favorite of her covers, while "Bliss," "Petals" and "Crybaby" are just stellar. I love "X-Girlfriend" and "CTTA" as well and I think that the album version of "Thank God I Found You" is, sadly, very overlooked.
Her best ERA for sure. This album really felt like Mariah being completely free and 100% herself and not giving a f**k anymore after Butterfly broke her through. #CrazyBoobyRainbow

I liked a lot of "Rainbow" but I guess it had a few lows for me but the songs I loved overshadowed them. "Heartbreaker" was instant for me. The whole song is catchy from head to toe. "Can't Take That Away" used to be one of my Top 3-5 Mariah songs of all time. (Obsessed at the time) I didn't get why they didn't put out "How Much" at the time? I loved it, the sample was good and Usher was big at the time. I may be in the minority here but I probably would have went with it as a single in place of "Crybaby". "After Tonight" is beautiful and I LOVED how she kind of echoed herself through out the song and basically did a duet with herself in the last chorus. "Against All Odds" has always been a song I liked and Mariah did a good job covering it. I also had a good friend who loved it at the time. I was into "X Girlfriend" but kind of got tired of it quickly. It took me a bit but I ended up getting into "Thank God I Found You" too. The remix was AMAZING though and along with the EPIC club mix of "Heartbreaker/If You Should Ever Be Lonely" the "Rainbow" era was Great I guess!

AWFUL!
I only cared for TGIFY, Heartbreaker, and Bliss. However the two interludes are cute.

I consider this my second favorite Mariah album after Butterfly because of the nostalgia attached to it. I recognize it's a spotty album and I rarely listen without skipping some tracks, but the songs I love, I LOVE.
"Thank God I Found You" is Mariah's most underrated #1, and "Did I Do That?" wouldn't be that bad if you took out Mystikal's shouting.

Not my favorite album but itβs still worthy. This album grew on me. Itβs still enjoyable.
