15. Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Sh*t, I Don't Go Outside
2015 abstract hip-hop/west coast hip-hop
a dark, depressing, black hole of an album. Earl's way of conveying these sad and dark emotions is unparalleled in hip-hop right now. the tracklist here is very consistent, with the weakest tracks still being of a great quality. to me, the main thing that is holding this album back is its lack of defining, perfect songs which the albums above it possess. regardless of this, what an album.
top 3 - 1. dna 2. wool (ft. vince staples) 3. am // radio (ft. wiki)
rating: 9/10
14. Death Grips - The Money Store
2012 experimental hip-hop/hardcore hip-hop/industrial hip-hop
wow, The Money Store is here, what a surprise. yeah i know, it's cliche, but how could i just ignore how great this album is. the agression, power, noise, energy etc. exerted from this album is insane and somehow through all of that the album is still endlessly catchy and replayable. the production is some of the best of the decade, once you look up what the hell Ride is saying the meanings of each track can be interpreted better too. at the end of the day, it's just a fantastic album.
top 3 tracks - 1. hacker 2. get got 3. i've seen footage
rating: 9/10
13. Tyler, the Creator - Flower Boy
2017 west coast hip-hop/neo-soul
it may be surprising to see this outside the top 10, and at the start of the year i'd be surprised too, but i honestly overplayed this album. it's to the point where i don't really listen to it anymore and i don't think it's as perfect as i used to. granted it's still incredible, i mean it is nearly in my top 10 after all. the standouts here are amongst the best songs of the decade, great lyricism, rapping, production, hooks and Tyler's signature charm are all found extensively on Flower Boy. high praise from somebody who once considered him highly overrated and borderline unlistenable.
top 3 tracks - 1. see you again (ft. kali uchis) 2. 911/mr. lonely (ft. frank ocean & steve lacy) 3. boredom (ft. rex orange county & anna of the north)
rating: 9/10
12. Weyes Blood - Titanic Rising
2019 baroque pop/art pop/dream pop
a true testament to this album is that Weyes managed to create something as incredible as its cover art. i mean, jesus. this isn't quite my AOTY, but it is my album artwork of the year for sure. the sheer elegance and beauty of this music is out of this world. there are several 'perfect' pop songs on here and there's really not a dull moment. do yourself a favour and check this album out if you haven't.
top 3 tracks - 1. andromeda 2. a lot's gonna change 3. movies
rating: 9/10
so, there's only 4 albums in this post as you've probably noticed. my top 11 are actually all 10's and i didn't want to exclude one of them, so instead of the top 10 getting individual posts, the top 11 will be getting individual posts. i don't wanna tag excessively so i'll probably do tags for like every third album. and yeah i think that's really it, thanks for following along and we're really getting into top 20 favourite album of all time territory with these albums.

I wish I would have listened to more 2019 albums in 2019, but Titanic Rising is my AOTY of the ones I did listen to. You also chose the correct top 3 on ‘Yeezus’ There's no "Blood on the Leaves", though.

11. Lana Del Rey - Norman F*cking Rockwell
2019 art pop/singer songwriter/dream pop
my love for this album has come in stages. to set the scene, it's late 2018 and of course i'm listening to the wintertime madness sets for that year. as usual i'm enjoying most of the songs and i get to Mariners Apartment Complex. i liked it quite a bit. this isn't out of the ordinary, i also liked Summertime Sadness several years prior. then i get to Venice Bitch and i like it even more, probably the most i've liked a Lana song. it ends up being above several other songs that i loved in that set. fast forward a few months and hope is a dangerous thing is picked in march madness. i think it was this point where i started realising that Lana was not only releasing likeable singles, she was releasing incredible ones. i gave this a mid 9 and it was my favourite song in the set, and i was even quoted saying "lana went fully sicko mode on this tune". this is probably what caused me to start revisiting VB and MAC and gaining a newfound appreciation for them. this led me to actually be excited for Lana's new album, which would come a few months later. so we get to the day of the album release, i listen to it that very day and am quoted saying "alright lana's album is my 4th favourite album of the year". that's off one listen. and it was a grower. eventually it was Titanic Rising vs NFR for my aoty, and in early November, Lana won out. i just come back to this album so much. i listen to it pretty much once a week at this point, Venice Bitch, MAC, The greatest, FIILY are on repeat and i really can't get enough of this album. unfortunately, a few slightly less good songs drop it to 11 but really 10 & 11 are very even and i found a hard time choosing which to elevate to top 10 status.
top 5 tracks - 1. venice bitch 2. mariners apartment complex 3. the greatest 4. f**k it i love you 5. doin' time
rating: 10/10
i said i wasn't gonna tag every post but i think i will, given these will likely be spread out through the next couple of weeks.

10. Alvvays - Antisocialites
2017 indie pop/jangle pop/dream pop
this is one that i haven't known of for very long. i believe the first Alvvays song i heard was Archie, Marry Me for the Rolling Stone best of the century rankdown, and iirc i didn't care for it. i'm not sure what exactly caused me to revisit the group, i have some recollection of listening to different singles that were high on rym's 2010's chart and Dreams Tonite is so i'll assume it was that. whatever it was, Dreams Tonite made a huge impression on me. i remember being blown away by the simple beauty and catchiness of the song and because of this i listened to it, a lot. it's my second most played song of 2019, behind only Never Meant which is probably my favourite song of the 90's. so of course, when you become this obsessed with a song you decide to check out the rest of their catalogue. the first song i heard whilst doing this was Not My Baby, and i loved it on first listen. i listened to the rest of the album but not properly and nothing else really stuck out. a bit later on, gates included In Undertow in his 2010's rankdown and this would become the third song from this album that i loved. over time i would grow to love the whole album and become obsessed with it in the springtime, probably the perfect time to listen to Antisocialites. honestly, this and NFR could have easily switched spots but i elevated Antisocialites because it only features one lesser track whilst NFR features two. tough i know, but that's the way it has to be with these very even albums at the top. as far as i know there is only one poster on the whole of pulse that doesn't like Alvvays, so if you haven't checked them out ~ please do.
top 5 tracks - 1. dreams tonite 2. not my baby 3. in undertow 4. saved by a waif 5. forget about life

9. Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city
2012 west coast hip-hop/hardcore hip-hop/conscious hip-hop
i'm sure most of you were expecting this album to finish higher on this list, most likely in the top 5. and as the self-advertised resident Kendrick Lamar stan, i cannot blame you for expecting this to be higher. in fact at certain points of the decade, this probably would've been in my top 2. despite this, as gkmc approaches it's 8th birthday, i find that it hasn't aged as well as a certain other Kendrick album and it's tracklist has a few blander spots that keep it below other albums on this list. obviously it gets more right than it gets wrong, with some serious hip-hop classics in Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst and m.A.A.d city and several other great songs that help perfectly construct the narrative and world of life in Compton. and these difficult scenarios and constructed with such poise and polish that make almost every song highly replayable and able to be enjoyed by many listeners. at the end of the day, good kid m.a.a.d city is without a doubt deserving of the praise it gets & therefore it also deserves to be outshined by a certain other album by Kendrick.
top 5 tracks - 1. m.a.a.d city 2. money trees (ft. jay rock) 3. sing about me, i'm dying of thirst 4. bitch don't kill my vibe 5. the art of peer pressure

8. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
2010 pop rap/hip-hop
i can already imagine the thoughts of "Will do you even like Kanye & Kendrick anymore"
yeah, this is another one that most people would expect to land in my top 5, if not higher. it's an album that has that sort of reputation. when the big publications released their best albums of the decade lists, this one seemed to top them more than any other record. it's an extravagant, powerful, bold and truly a statement in one of the biggest and most polarising artists of our time's career. it came at a point in time where everyone was against him, and he won them back purely through how damn good this album is. career highs such as Runaway, POWER, Devil in a New Dress & Gorgeous appear on this album, as well as hit singles such as All of the Lights & Monster. this album is just iconic. so what exactly brought it down the list for me, basically some weaker moments here and there, especially Blame Game & Who Will Survive in America, which just don't seem necessary to me. not that they're bad tracks but i just find them unnecessary and weaker in relation to the rest of the record. however noticeable these flaws may be, MBDTF is a decade defining album, and will forever be recognised as such.
top 5 tracks - 1. runaway (ft. pusha t) 2. devil in a new dress (ft. rick ross) 3. lost in the world (ft. bon iver) 4. gorgeous (ft. kid cudi & raekwon) 5. power

7. Playboi Carti - Die Lit
2018 trap/cloud rap/shoegaze/punk/post-music
lol
if you know me well, this will not surprise you. if you don't know me well, you will probably be either questioning my sanity or wondering if i'm joking. i mean, these assumptions are totally fair. i just put Die Lit by Playboi Carti ahead of MBDTF & GKMC, two of the most critically acclaimed albums of the decade, if not all time, by my two favourite rappers. and whilst i love those albums, i really do, i *really* love Die Lit. which is odd, given how i hated it and hated the positive reception it was getting when it dropped. in fact it was this positive reception that led me to revisit the album a few months later, and ever so slowly since then it would grow on me. eventually to the point where it was my album of the year for 2018... for around a week until something else topped it, which we'll get to a bit later. regardless, Die Lit stands as one of my all time favourite albums at this point. i just fucking adore everything about this album. the sugary sweet production, mind numbing lyrics, baby voiced delivery, the creativity, the legendary album cover (probably my favourite album cover of all time in all honesty). i also love the mere idea of this album. lyrically, meaning-wise it's fucking nothing, yet the incredible production and delivery still means you have to respect it. this album is the counter to people who complain about "mumble rap" not having any point. the ideas here are more interesting and better executed than.. checks list.. all but four rap albums released in the 2010's. i mean obviously people *can* hate on this album, but unless they were trying to prove a point, i don't understand why they'd bother. Die Lit is one of the most genius albums of our time, presented in a simple and lovable fashion and will go down as a genre defining trap album, and one of my personal favourite pieces of music ever recorded.
top 5 tracks - 1. shoota (ft. lil uzi vert) 2. r.i.p 3. flatbed freestyle 4. long time - intro 5. r.i.p fredo (notice me) (ft. yung nudy)

6. Kanye West - The Life of deleted
2016 hip-hop/pop rap
...because Die Lit wasn't a controversial enough pick.
yes i like The Life of deleted more than MBDTF. in fact it's my favourite Kanye album. it's also the *most* Kanye album in a way. TLOP blends together so many different styles of Kanye's music, from the more experimental sounds found on his later work, to the gospel inspired tracks on his first two albums. his lyricism here is also very Kanye, including the most Kanye song yet entitled I Love Kanye which is Kanye's ode to Kanye. some may see the drastic changes in lyrical themes as messy but i see it more as an opportunity to look into Ye's mind and feel all the different emotions that he does. not only do these songs represent something, but jesus fucking christ they just sound so good. Sampha's chorus on the final track Saint deleted, Sia's background vocals on Wolves, Madlib's beat on No More Parties, the sample of Bam Bam on Famous, Cudi on Father Stretch My Hands Pt.1 are just some of the personal highlights for me. the sounds on this album are so varied, yet it still manages to feel cohesive to me. it also features many of the best songs in Kanye's discography. TLOP is also remarkably consistent, with 20 tracks there's only two that i'd remove, and they really aren't enough to hamper the album's quality in any way. sure, from a technical standpoint The Life of deleted might seem underwhelming when compared to a College Dropout, Late Registration, Dark Twisted Fantasy or even Kids See Ghosts, but in the grand scheme of things, does this really matter? personally, i enjoy this album regardless of its shortcomings and inconsistencies. The Life of deleted is a blast and i believe public opinion on this album will be more positive as time moves forward, for now though, i'll enjoy it regardless of the critics.
top 5 tracks - 1. ultralight beam (ft. chance the rapper) 2. saint deleted (ft. sampha) 3. father stretch my hands pt. 1 (ft. kid cudi) 4. fml (ft. the weeknd) 5. wolves (ft. vic mensa) // no more parties in la (ft. kendrick lamar)

5. Danny Brown - Atrocity Exhibition
2016 experimental hip-hop/hardcore hip-hop
here's an interesting one. i say this because this isn't a MBDTF or a GKMC or a Lemonade, if you weren't paying attention to the right places you would have completely missed the insane critical success this gem has received, mainly online. if you know me, you know my go-to music communities that aren't Pulse are rateyourmusic.com & music instagram. and it just so happens that in both of these places, this album has gone down as one of the best ever. of course if you don't visit these places you will probably think i'm lying. i'm not. it's rym's #5 album of the decade, and #75 overall ~ even with the rock bias on that site. on music instagram i've seen this album called the best rap album of all time dozens of times. and of course i am building up all this hype now to tell you that i wholeheartedly agree with this praise. Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition is one of the best albums i've ever heard. if i was ranking this list critically, this would be #2. despite the fact that i'm not, it still ends up in my top 5. Atrocity Exhibition excels in every area i can think of that a rap album of this sorts should. the production, handled by the immensely talented Paul White is spectacular to say the least. the way these beats create the drug infested, depressive atmosphere that showcases Danny's personal struggle is incredible. and all this is before we get to Danny himself, who is on fire on this album. it honestly seems like he can do no wrong for the entire duration of this album. another thing that people often look past when talking about this album is how, despite being dark as hell, this album has so many catchy, addicting moments. these range from hooks on certain songs, beats on others, certain lines, the odd feature etc. there really isn't a wasted moment on this album. on Atrocity Exhibtion, Danny Brown reached a ridiculous peaks that most artists could only dream of. everything he dd leading up to this point lined up perfectly on this album, and I along with the many other fans of this album, will always be thankful for that.
top 5 tracks - 1. ain't it funny 2. when it rain 3. dance in the water 4. really doe (ft. kendrick lamar, earl sweatshirt & ab-soul) 5. lost

4. Lorde - Melodrama
2017 art pop/synthpop
here's an obvious one. Lorde's 2017 masterpiece Melodrama was released to critical and commercial success that has carried over to online communities, such as Pulse in a big way. because of this, i'm sure many of you love this album like i do. it hits that balance of having enough substance lyrically & instrumentally to return to often, whilst also sounding good & being one catchy ass album. of course, it's not the first pop album this decade in this vein but i'd argue that it is the best executed. out of the 11 tracks there's only one that i'd cut, but it's an interlude anyway, so it doesn't matter too much. every other song on this thing is borderline perfection and among the best pop releases the decade had to offer. i feel like this album doesn't need a big review at this point, you all know what it is & why it's here. so i'll leave you with this, if you somehow haven't heard Melodrama yet, you're missing out.
top 5 tracks -
1. perfect places 2. liability 3. hard feelings/loveless 4. writer in the dark 5. green light

3. Earl Sweatshirt - Some Rap Songs
2018 post hip-hop/abstract hip-hop/experimental hip-hop
i'm just gonna put this real bluntly: this album means a lot to me. as with pretty much everybody else on earth, i often feel sad. i also feel isolated, lonely, anxious & a whole lot of things. and to cope with these feelings i turn to music. not always, as evident by most of this list being a lot more lightweight and easy to listen to, but every now and then. and basically what i'm trying to say is that this album helps me in these times. something about listening to sad music makes me feel less sad? or maybe it makes me feel like someone is struggling with me and can relate to my problems. i'm not sure, but it works. to put it simply i love this album. the rest of the top 10 is really great but the top 3 are in a league of their own. if i was one of those people that gave albums an "11/10" then this would get it. i'd go as far as to say i have every moment on this thing memorized, it's just such a common, recurring part of my life now. the crazy thing about that is, despite getting 750 plays of this album in what? 14 months? it has not gotten old. i could listen to this thing all day every day and i would never get sick of it, which is something i can't even say about my favourite album. there's just a certain quality here that makes this album addicting, maybe it's the production, maybe the rapping i'm not sure. another thing i should mention is that the songs on this album are short, there's only 3/15 songs that are longer than 2 minutes, one of them exactly 2:00. despite this, these songs leave such a huge impact with me that most artists can't replicate in their entire career. i'm not sure how to end this summary. if you haven't listened to this, do, i suppose. i loved it from first listen but it's not your average rap album. it's hard to get into for most people (from what i've seen). hopefully if you do check it out, you'll love it as i do, if not so be it. this is my list. i don't expect everyone to agree.
thank you Earl.

2. Frank Ocean - Blonde
2016 alternative r&b/art pop/neo-soul
i don't know how to write about this album. as if trying to put into words how much Some Rap Songs means to me wasn't hard enough, doing the same for Blonde is just impossible. i'll give it a go though. well, let's start with the obvious. i love this album. i love it. i love it i love it i love it i love it. my favourite part would have to be Frank's vocals. i mean, what else would it be. funnily enough i'm not sure how to describe them. they're angelic (2 the core), soothing, friendly, cold & warm at the same time, sad yet hopeful, gorgeous. i'm usually not big on lyrics but they really matter here. the emotion conveyed on Nights, Self Control, White Ferrari, Ivy, Seigfried & Solo is enough to make me cry; in part to the lyrical themes. the production fits the mood very well. the odd feature here and there, i.e. Beyonce, Yung Lean, Andre 3000 do their thing as well (especially Andre, an all time great feature right there). the tracklist is not as refined as it could be, but i'd be lying if i said i skipped Be Yourself often, or even Facebook Story. those interludes are still interesting and the whole "many college students have gone to college" thing makes me laugh. Future Free is one track that i'd probably halve, or at least cut a chunk out of. but hey, i'm not here to critique this album, i'm here to try and demonstrate my love for it. basically, i'm finding it very hard to do that at the moment, it's hard to really analyse something that has made such an impact on your life. basically, please listen to this album if you haven't, or you don't enjoy it yet (it took me at least a year). and of course
thank you Frank
for this masterpiece.

1. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
2015 jazz rap/west coast hip-hop/conscious hip-hop
this is just such an obvious pick. like this whole time, did you really expect anything else would be crowned my album of the decade. probably not. and yeah, this was the only option for me. picking 100-2 sure was a challenge though! since the first time i heard TPAB, it pretty much instantly became my favourite album. which is weird, given it was the first rap album i ever listened to, but this thing was just too damn good for my 12 year old brain to ignore. of course, back then, i was more interested in the singles. King Kunta, Alright & i were my favourite songs off the album and i listened to them over and over and over and over again. over time my favourites expanded to include the likes of These Walls, How Much a Dollar Cost and The Blacker the Berry which are kinda the next most popular tracks. whilst the first 3 grabbed me for their sound, these ones were all about the lyrics and themes for me. and then over time, ever song would grow on me in this way. at this point i believe every song is a 5, something i can only say about two other albums. for the past few years, this album has been elevated to a status where i'm not sure i can bring myself to call anything better than it. luckily for me though, i haven't had to. TPAB remains the best album i have ever listened to, and my favourite album ever released. it's already gone down as a classic but i hope that in the future it can be spoken about like a Thriller or Sgt Peppers, because this album truly deserves that status. i feel as though i've written this pretty well, yet i'm still not doing it justice. but then again, how can you do 16 tracks of musical perfection justice? the only way i can think of would be to listen to it. i cannot stress this enough, if you have not listened to this album; please do. otherwise, thank you for being a great audience and for putting up with this top 10 being very dragged out. i'll probably do a list like this once 2020 is over of my favourite albums of the year and in the mean time i'm hosting a pop themed rankdown which is still open for another month. i sincerely mean this when i say thank you for following along, for liking these posts or just from browsing my selections; i really do love listening to and talking about music and i've loved making & revealing this list. much love, Will.

That's a way to end a countdown! TPAB was an obvious #1 for you & I'm glad to see how big of an impact it has had in your life. That's great!
Can't wait to see more of your lists.
